trying to build unity but continui continuity. he's taking john xxiii and took it global and out to the people. these are the bookends of vatican ii. people forget he was there, too, as a young theologian and very involved. he and john paul ii worked together. so you can't discount pope benedict. a lot of people say he's retired. >> but he spent a lot of time with pope francis. >> pope francis wants to bring pope benedict out into the public. he has coaxed him out to the public to say we need to build this unity. that's why he's taking these two

selfies can relate to young people today, but he speaks in a way they understand because he speaks to their heart. he's not speaking in theologianese, he's speaking to people the way he reached out to the woman married to a divorced man. he's getting people where they are and not trying to say, if you jump over this bar, then you can or i can meet your needs. but he's saying, wherever you are, i will meet your needs and administer to you where you are. i think people understand that. they get back -- >> unconditional kindness it seems to me, but also pope francis has spoken out about a lot of what's going on in the world. syria and chemical weapons. ukraine and russia's actions. how much impact do you think those messages from the pontiff play? >> i think it will have a tremendous impact, but again, i don't know what's going on behind the scenes. one of the things you can relate to john xxiii, he also had a say

mother as antoinette d'amato passed away. best known for her campaign commercials. so proud of her son. she stumped for him in a 1980 campaign and wrote two cookbooks and even dined with president ronald reagan. antoinette was 99 years old. we send regards to the family. all right. back to business and the controversy over the keystone pipeline. it's erupting into outright anger today. people for and against this project are pushing for the obama administration to just make a decision already. it's been delay after delay. what's next?

arguments and are protesting it's bad for the environment but it's happening anyway. >> very interesting. the state department which delayed this review actually came out with a study that showed because the alternative to the pipeline are so bad for greenhouse emissions, up to 42% more by oil or tanker -- i mean by rail or tanker. so it's going to come in, but it is coming in in an unfriendly environmental status. >> what are the environmentalists not seeing? what is president obama not seeing why the continual delays. >> okay. there's a lot of politics involved in this. apparently some of top democrats, including the senate majority leader, went to a huge hedge fund billionaire in san francisco and said we need money for the senate seats in peril and some of the conservative leaning states. he basically said, okay, i'll give you millions but this is what i want.
