streaming live from the ukraine. >> reporter: the one international observer was released for some type of medical reason. we don't know exactly what the type of the release was, but the other group of international hospitalers are inside the russian stronghold. we flew tonight for the pro-russian malitia earlier. they put testimony thogether an then called them prisoners of war. they wanted to find those being held by the government there in kiev. there's no deal on that. the russian foreign miner is said to have made apromise as

well. day three is slow beyond where the pro-russian malitias have take up position. they are heavily armed there. and the ukrainian military has surrounded the town but they have not laid siege on it yet. they have not moved in with the armor or personal. meanwhile, the secretary and the militias are becoming bolder and bolder. in the capitol region, they came in and took the -- they have yet to really take a stand anywhere. not only did the police stop the september rests from taking over

the television station, but they have moved in against the pro-russian strongholds inside a number of days for the referendum. there is the possibility of turn turning them over as they have 40,000 troops planning to invade. >> how are the average citizens reacting to all this? >> certainly they are being squeezed in the brink of war in all directions. remember, prices are going up here. folks here do not make much.

john xxii. what an incredible day, lauren. >> you remember, it has been nine years since we said good-bye to pope john paul ii. you were there in rome. well, nine years later those shouts have been answered for him to become a saint. one of the things you talked about before in the intro is this is the day of four popes. mark it on the calendar that you witnessed this day because it will never happen again. two reigning popes celebrating mass together and lifting up two popes as saints. that has never happened before, that two popes have been saints at the same time. >> they deserve it because the two popes recognized today shaped the face in a way, but in a different way. they were very different in their methodology and theology. >> in many ways, pope francis is

trying to build unity but continui continuity. he's taking john xxiii and took it global and out to the people. these are the bookends of vatican ii. people forget he was there, too, as a young theologian and very involved. he and john paul ii worked together. so you can't discount pope benedict. a lot of people say he's retired. >> but he spent a lot of time with pope francis. >> pope francis wants to bring pope benedict out into the public. he has coaxed him out to the public to say we need to build this unity. that's why he's taking these two

popes together, pope john paul ii and pope john xxiii. >> this just reminds what you see -- a million people gathering in st. peter's and joyous in poland celebrating. it brings a lot of peel together. >> this is a punctuation mark. pope francis was ordained after vatican ii, so you see there an era that just ended and one beginning again. >> it seems like the popes, at least with francis, more relatable, do you find that to be the case? that younger people may again become more involved? >> well, any pope who can do

selfies can relate to young people today, but he speaks in a way they understand because he speaks to their heart. he's not speaking in theologianese, he's speaking to people the way he reached out to the woman married to a divorced man. he's getting people where they are and not trying to say, if you jump over this bar, then you can or i can meet your needs. but he's saying, wherever you are, i will meet your needs and administer to you where you are. i think people understand that. they get back -- >> unconditional kindness it seems to me, but also pope francis has spoken out about a lot of what's going on in the world. syria and chemical weapons. ukraine and russia's actions. how much impact do you think those messages from the pontiff play? >> i think it will have a tremendous impact, but again, i don't know what's going on behind the scenes. one of the things you can relate to john xxiii, he also had a say

half a million construction workers who endorsed obama twice is speaking out against this vociferously. >> this is no example of profiles in courage. it's clear the administration needs to grow a set of antlers or perhaps take a lesson from popeye and eat some spinach. it's not just the 2,000 hard hat jobs and also thousands more about the construction of the pipeline, but canada has about 1,000 suppliers who would be working here in the u.s. if the pipeline went through. >> the way it was expressed by the ambassador, they really want to work with us. they don't understand the continual delays. being postponed until after the midterm elections. an environmentalist make their

arguments and are protesting it's bad for the environment but it's happening anyway. >> very interesting. the state department which delayed this review actually came out with a study that showed because the alternative to the pipeline are so bad for greenhouse emissions, up to 42% more by oil or tanker -- i mean by rail or tanker. so it's going to come in, but it is coming in in an unfriendly environmental status. >> what are the environmentalists not seeing? what is president obama not seeing why the continual delays. >> okay. there's a lot of politics involved in this. apparently some of top democrats, including the senate majority leader, went to a huge hedge fund billionaire in san francisco and said we need money for the senate seats in peril and some of the conservative leaning states. he basically said, okay, i'll give you millions but this is what i want.
