out. there was a great big line of thunderstorms. you could see it rolling cross the plainsç states. they predicted it was coming. there was going to be an outbreak, and there was. >> we begin with an extreme weather alert. thousands waking up to what looks like a war zone after twisters slammed the midwest. you can hear the horrifying screams and sirens in the background. at least 16 people are dead in arkansas. this aerial video right here taken by a drone showing neighborhoods completely flattened. >> it looks like a bomb went off out there. >> maria molina is live on the ground in one of the hardest hit cities. that's mayflower, arkansas. tell us about the extent of the damage from which you can tell because the sun obviously not yet up.ç >> the storm hit just

before sunset so we were able to see some of the damage at that time. behind me you can see what used to be a home just completely destroyed. we have also just seen search and rescue crews back out searching through the rubble. when we arrived it was just a couple of minutes after the tornado hit mayflower, arkansas. we were tracking the storm. we were with storm chasers in the state of arkansas because we knew there was a high risk to see these long track tornadoes in this region. we saw a man being pulled from a car on interstate 40. a lotç damage out there. trailers destroyed, cars flipped like they were toys. homes completely destroyed. power lines down across the entire city. also we saw -- we smelled what was a gas leak. and in a distance we could see some fires burning at that time. people were trapped on interstate 40 and we did speak to a woman. listen to how she describes

her ordeal. >> we just seen a black cloud and we pulled over and then the wind came and broke our window and we flew. we pulled over because everyone else pulled over but we were already in the middle of it. >> there were also many other states impacted, arkansas being one of the hardest hit states. but in oklahoma we had one confirmed fatality and also a reported tornado, possible?xáornadoes as well across the state of nebraska and also western parts of missouri and also in the state of kansas. many reports of damaging winds. the storm system still on the move today and also into tomorrow. we do have today a risk to see severe storms from parts of northern louisiana up into the midwest. the storm prediction center which is a part of the national weather service issued something called a moderate risk, including parts of mississippi, alabama and tennessee. what that means, that ingredients there are favorable to see possibly more of these violent

angeles and the clippers were never the top-five story. in los angeles. now not only has the story about the clippers owner surpassed the president's trip, the ukrainian's possible invasion by the russians, it is the number-one topic in america. it is all about their billionaire owner donald sterling caught on tape by tmz sports. i imagine they paid for it, but they got this track. they put this up. ever since you hear this, ever since these words came out in the public forum there has been outrage and it's so justifiable. listen to a little bit of it. this is the extended version of the conversation he had with his, i assume former girlfriend. >> do you know that you have a team that's black that plays for you. >> [inaudible] i support them and give them food and clothes and cars and houses. who gives it to them? does someone else give it

away? because apparentlyç we've only heard less than one hour of stuff. apparently there are 100 hours of this stuff. because apparently he asked her to tape him because he would frequently forget what he had said. it looks -- even though she says she didn't do it. it looks like she leaked it to tmz. now everybody is running with it. >> calling personal foul. lots to be decided what the penalty will be. magic johnson, as you mentioned, in that photo seemingly at the heart of the conversation that we heard. the players now are staying disciple lent with protests -- staying silent with protests. magic johnson and charles barkley strong with their response. >> there is no place in our society for it, our league. he put his own team in a tough situation. i believe that once

first off, weigh in, david webb. where do you think we should go from here? >> given that the nba is a private organization, they can do what they want. but we have to crush bigotry wherever it exists. doesn't matter who it comes from. there is a track record that goes back to 2003. there was a $5 million private lawsuit settlement. there was a lawsuit settled by the feds, $2.7 million, where they said it was the biggest settlement in their history. we have a commissioner, go back to the previous commissioner stern, who prosecuted discrimination cases in new jersey in his young years. what we have is money talks. the nba shouldn't put up with this. no one shoul"ç put up with this. >> if they don't come out strong, these players might collectively decide not to play the rest of the series. >> i don't think that's true. but mr. sterling has had an

exceptional record in supporting blacks and black causes. i met mr. sterling in 1983 in san diego where he reached out to the black community through the naacp ironically and curtis mooring to solicit black business. this statement that he made, i think it was a setup. if you listen to the tape, the young ladyç started out by saying i wish i could change the skin -- then she changed it and says the color of my skin. it sounds like a setup. >> how do you have a setup when someone says their own words. it is not someone put a gun to his head. >> that's not true. she continued to goad him and bring up race and make racist issues. >> how do i make you say what i want? >> there is a culture of blacks feel certain ways about latinos, latinos feel certain ways about

groups coming to our campus and this is the first time i've seen such a profound reaction from anyone, both professors and students. this is the first time i've seen a professor speak up against evalue general -- evangelicals. i think it is interesting to note in today's society there is an issue of whether or not we want to offend someone. but i think it is important to note freedom of speech is very important and we have a phenomenal university with phenomenal faculty and staff. however this one incident the professor did not hold u conn's values. >> we have a statement that says weç expect our faculty to act in a way of civil discourse and respect themselves professionally. the professor said this: many have seen a two minute video present #-d as a university professor gone april. it -- gone ape.

the video edits out insults of students, and scientists and omits darwin's vision on the university of life.ç your reaction to that? >> the professor did say he felt obligated to defend students because prior to the video starting students did feel like they were being attacked. it's important to note some students may sometimes feel uncomfortable with evangelical groups on campus. while their christian faith might not represent my own faith they are able to represent their own opinions on campus. >> you mentioned being uncomfortable possibly with a protest on either side. would the professor's action make them

three separate states. but officials say the death toll expected to rise sadly. this as crews start to scour the rubble looking for survivors. >> maria molina is live on the ground in mayflower,ç arkansas. i understand as the sun comes up the search goes on. i was reading there is a medical triage unit set up in the parking lot of a home improvement store. it is just terrible out there. >> yeah, that's right. we did see that triage that was set up and people were also sent to several different hospitals across the area. it's just devastating, and the scene out here is heartbreaking. we did arrive a few minutes after the storm hit the town of mayflower, arkansas, where we are located. we did encounter on interstate 40 a man being rescued from his car and other injuries as well. we can see around us homes that have been completely destroyed, trees are toppled, power lines down. and another thing, we did

also smell gas. there were gas leaks when we arrived on interstate 40 here in mayflower. in the distance we couldp &c @@ also see some fires. trailers completely leveled out here, and that's just one of many other scenes we're seeing here in mayflower. some of the people were also trapped on interstate 40, like i mentioned, had to be rescued. and some people only had moments before they could seek shelter. they received these tornado warnings on their phone. that is what told them to seek shelter. we did speak to a man. listen to what he had to say. >> sounded like a freight train, your stereotypical definition of it. what really caught my eyes, theç transformers popping. that is when i started getting scared. you could see the flashes and hear the popping and things hitting the building. the building was shaking, you know. i'm ready, lord, here i come. >> now, there was a high risk that was issued here

in arkansas in that particular storm with the tornado that moved through mayflower was tornado warned. arkansas, one of the hardest hit states by the severe weather outbreak. another state hit hard was oklahoma where we have one confirmed fatality and one confirmed fatality in iowa. damaging winds and reports of large hail from these storms. the storm system is still on the move. today anywhere from parts of louisiana up into the midwest we could see severe weather. but the greatest risk area for today is across parts of mississippi, alabama, and also inç tennessee. this is where we have that area shaded in red. that means we could see more violent storms and very violent tornadoes that could touch down and produce more damage. the storm system still on the move and after today we could still see more severe weather come as we head into tuesday across parts of the southeastern united states from the same storm

system. a multiday severe weather outbreak ongoing. >> the conditions are perfect for more bad weather. maria molina live in mayflower. thank you very much. >> stay safe, maria. heather, you areç standing by here safely with headlines for us as we move through the morning. >> we start in connecticut where there is information on an arraignment happening later today scheduled for a 16-year-old connecticut student charged in the murder of one of his classmates. he could be charged as an adult in the stabbing death of another 16-year-old on the day of their junior prom. his attorney says the male student will not appear. investigators are looking into whether a rejected invitation to the prom was the reason for the attack. plaskin is being held in a hospital under psychiatric evaluation. he has been described as well liked and popular by his friends. a pipe bomb explodes in a massachusetts

neighborhood while police were taking a look at it.ç marshfield police say the pipe bomb went off because it was too sensitive to shock and friction. no one was hurt. it is not clear where that bomb came from but investigators believe it was to target an individual and not the general public. is it tough love or over the line? a florida father was caught on video kicking his son down a skate ramp. now the department of children and families is looking into it. check this out. >> ow! >> that poor little guy just six years old. marcus crossland apparently thought he was teachinoç the six-year-old how to ride down a half pike at a skate park. the boy wouldn't budge and that is when the father kicked him off the ledge. the boy heard crying as the father walks off. the boy fortunately not hurt.

>> well, that's typical of mayor tom barrett. his response of the crime and violence that's gone on in the county of milwaukee and in the city of milwaukee was to furlough all 1500 police officers three days each. so we have fewer man hours, if you will, to be spent in patrolling high crime areas. that's what we get from him. the county executive of milwaukee cut my budget nearly 16 million over two years and laid off sheriffs deputies. so basically what those two have communicated to the people of milwaukee county is that you're on your own when it comes to crime and violence. i'm responsible for the protection and i decided to partner with the law-abiding people in milwaukee county, who i trust to go armed with concealed and dangerous weapons. >> and sheriff, that's part of what rankles a number of democrats is you're a democrat. and you're talking about how people would be better able to forget themselves if -- protect themselves if a guy has a gun and another guy has a one

looked for some of these storms that could potentially produce severe weather. the storm prediction center issued a high risk for arkansas and we watch on the radar as the storm started to produce some rotation and a tornado came downtown there was some debris we could see on the radar and came to mayflower and the tornado, unfortunately, came through this region as well. take a look at some of these aerial shots as the storm ripped through parts of interstate 40. a lot of damage has been left here across parts of mayflower. the storm also kept moving after this. we arrived here and did see search and rescue efforts already ongoing along interstate 40. people being rescued from their cars. also cars completely wrecked, trailers split. and some people describe the tornado as sounding like a train. take a listen at how one man describes his ordeal. >> i could see it forming across the lake and i come up to to get

there are at least 100 hours of this guy on tape because apparently he told her, tape me because i'm forgetful and i want to remember what i had to say. that kind of sounds like part of a defense. i'm a little forgetful. i don't know what i'm doing. >> i think he could be out of it. frankly, based on his actions. he could be pretty much out of it in terms of his whole mentality. the whole thing is so crazy and the way she led him along, she should -- he should know if he were there, if he was with it, he would know after one or two of those questions that she was asking that there is something going on here. you look at the way he's being baited, just constantly being baited. i read part of the transcript and it was ridiculous. you sort of pick that up very quickly. so whether he's out of it or not, what he said was despicable and everybody i think agrees with that. i think probably very strong action is going to have to be taken by the commissioner.

record that's high. pressure on him to get them down. we're talking about changing the types of criteria for deportation. how do you feel about that? >> some of it depends on what his intentions are. if his intentions are to bring about policy changes, policy changes that he can't get through congress, that's a big problem. we have an elected house and an elected senate for a reason. those who make our laws are supposed to be accountable to the people at two-year intervals in the case of the house and six-year intervals in the case of the senate. when the president circumvents this, that causes problems. it throws the whole system off. >> so you're not even concerned about the content about the change he's going to make. the fact he's going to make changes without checking with you guys is disturbing, but not new. we've had six months of executive orders. >> disturbing, but not new and gets more disturbing every time. yeah, i am concerned about the content of it because the content of it will tell us a lot about what his intentions are. if he's trying to just make us

irrelevant, then yeah, we've got a problem. if all he's trying o do is say look, this is how i'm allocating scarce resources, that's something different. >> he's talking about if you came here multiple times, you violated the law, so we're not going to make a real effort to deport you. >> there is a difference between not making somebody a priority and saying to an entire group of people, don't worry about this law because we're going to leave it off the books. that's a problem. also a problem because it tells congress, hey, you don't really need to act here. it makes it less likely we get the kind of legislative reform we need out of congress because they feel like an unnecessary fifth wheel. >> you could argue deportations are down. the numbers don't lie. they dropped by 50,000 within the last year. so after being very high in 2012, not nearly as high in 2013. so the trend started might be coming official. i want to bring to you something else. speaker boehner last week in speaking locally in ohio started mocking republicans who don't want to do immigration reform.

extreme weather alert for you now. new dramatic video out of arkansas. a family just rescued out of their home after twisters slammed the midwest. >> here comes your mom. >> wow. that's a great survivor story. but sadly, 18 people are dead across three states this morning. >> maria molina is live on the ground in one of the hardest hit towns, mayflower, arkansas. maria, explain, if you would, we were talking about this outbreak on friday. how are they able to make the forecast days in advance that the conditions are ripe for that kind of stuff? >> we knew since tuesday that the ingredients would be in place come sunday for the severe weather outbreak. of course, you can't really tell exactly where a tornado will

form and whether weather it will touchdown -- where it will touch down. but we had all the conditions in place. humid conditions, warm temperatures, and we had something called a dry line. some dry air pushing eastward. it's this interaction of different air masses and also wind shear in different levels of the atmosphere that produce these rotating storms that could produce these damaging tornadoes. that's exactly what happened here in mayflower, arkansas. the sun is rising. we're just getting our first glimpse of how extensive and devastating the damage is here in mayflower. we want to show you this dramatic new video because it's not just mayflower that was hit hard by these storms, but also in another town 50 miles to the northeast of little rock, in this new video you can see emergency crews rescuing a woman, her parents and her dog. her parents hid in a closet during the storm system as it moved through. and here in mayflower, we have

seen the destruction out here. we see homes that are completely destroyed, almost unrecognizable. cars that have been flipped, trailers that have been mangled. and when we arrived on interstate 40, we saw people being rescued from their cars. some people were able to seek shelter just in the nick of time. some of them receiving tornado warnings on their cell phones. take a listen at what a man had to say. >> my wife was at work, i had the baby with me. we jumped in the storm cellar on our phone. thank god we had the alert on our phone of the come out 15 minutes later and looked like a war zone. >> other parts seeing tornadoes, possible tornadoes in oklahoma, kansas, missouri, even up into parts of iowa and nebraska. so this was a very widespread event. today we could see more severe weather stretching from louisiana to the midwest and the biggest threat area is across

this 60-year election, this midterm election behind him. >> and you think that mcconnell ultimately will win in kentucky. let's go down to louisiana where senator mary landrieu has gotten a lot of bad publicity because she was marching in lock step with the president regarding obamacare and it's now it's deeply unpopular. how is that going to turn out? >> again, her major problem is barak obama and the fact that he is so unpopular in louisiana. i'll tell you, steve, i've watched mary landrieu since she was first elected in 1996. she has never gotten more than 52% of the vote, but she always wins. remember, this is a race that louisiana naturally has a system unlike anybody else's. they're going to have their first primary in november. we're going to have the real election in december, in december. the public will hate that. you and i are going to love it. but it also means that we're going to have a very different electorate in december and the

senate could be hanging on that one seat. >> or if it's hanging on north carolina, real quickly, the senator kay hagin is a democrat versus tom tellis, a republican, you think that will go which way? >> tom tillis has to win the primary. that's may 6, next tuesday. he's got two strong opponents. if he can get 40%, he can eliminate the opposition, not go to a runoff. he'll be in a much stronger position for november. >> so exit question, how many seats does the republican party pick up in the senate? take your best guess. >> the crystal ball, which you love, steve, right now has republicans picking up between four and eight seats. they need six to take control. it's right on the edge of the fence post. but it's late april. things will change before november. i guarantee you. >> that's right. and as you say, it could be a wave election and you don't see the wave until it's real close to the shore.

it's brighter now, the sun up. but i'm sure a devastating sting. what are you looking at here? >> yeah. we arrived here in mayflower, arkansas, shortly after the tornado tore through. at that time, there were search are rescue efforts going on, people being rescued from their cars because they were trapped there, interstate 40. now the sun is rising and the scene here is just devastating. there is destruction everywhere. one of the sights here that is also incredible is obviously some trees have been brought down, but some of the trees that are still standing have had some of the branches come off and there is metal pieces stuck on these trees. that's just an incredible sight that i've never seen and just gives you an idea on how powerful that tornado was that ripped through this area. some of the structures are unrecognizable. we can't tell whether they were homes or not. we have tractor-trailers behind

any^ have been tossed like toys by this tornado. so we are just seeing how extensive and how widespread the damage was by that tornado that was sent here in mayflower, arkansas. it wasn't just mayflower, arkansas, but center hill, another town to the north of little rock, a few miles away from where we are. a woman, her parents, and her dog were rescued. her parents hid in a closet. take a listen also at how a survivor described the storm when it moved through his area. >> we barely got down there and slammed the basement door and i said it's tearing stuff up. lucky we made it through with the lord, you know. we'll get through this. >> they barely got out alive from that storm. today the storm system on the move f louisiana up into the midwest. you could see more severe storms and it's this region across mississippi, parts of tennessee,

second largest city in ukraine, shot in the back. he's in surgery right now in critical condition. this is a situation that is getting more tense as we talk about it each day. today also comes with the u.s. and the e.u. moving forward with additional sanctions against russia. these sanctions are going to be targeted to a number of other people, individuals around vladimir putin. they won't target putin himself as of yet. it also goes ever high-tech exports and defense exports from russia. the question is will it make an impact? is it making an impact? so far there is not evidence that it is as you hear about these shootings and more troops along the border. the administration thinks over time it's going to hit russia where it hurts. >> we see that eight unarmed observers who do this normal process were captured and they want to be exchanged by these russian supporters for other people on their side. so we'll see where that goes.

on top of that, the sanctions could be so tough. as chronicled by the "new york times," the european industries are pressuring the governments not to take severe sanctions because they have all these billions of dollars worth of trade, especially in the energy sector. so germany, spain, italy and france are not doing anything about this because they don't want to be hit in the pocketbook. >> it affects all of these nations video. these countries do business with russia. we talked about many times the natural gas imports to russia that are really affected -- i mean from russia into europe that are really affected. that becomes a problem for initiating these sanctions. there is reporting about a break in the white house of whether to do it unilaterally or wait for everybody to speak in one voice. so far we're waiting for everybody to speak in one voice. >> we also heard the president mention that there was -- seemed limited, but high-tech assistance being sent into the region. what can you tell us about that? >> it's interesting.

they haven't obviously sent any weapons into the region, but there could be some communication devices, some communications equipment that is going to the ukrainians. they are drawing the line there will not be military assistance and lethal weapon assistance to the ukrainians. the president in the philippines in this press conference was asked by ed henry about his foreign policy and about being defensive. >> the obama doctrine. >> yeah. he said listen, we have singles. we hit singles sometimes, baseball analogy. sometimes we hit doubles, but don't make errors. his critics are using another analogy. the football analogy that when a team is ahead and they have prevent defense, oftentimes the other team scores. they're saying that our team isn't ahead, but we are in the defensive stance and so it's interesting to see how it's playing here in washington. >> way to go, bret, because that counted as sports for this half

counselor that week. so we don't know if that was an innocent visit or something more serious. >> if indeed they did know something, if on that wednesday when he met with the counselor the school had information and did not do anything about it, what's the level of culpability? >> it's an interesting one. unfortunately for parents, there is an immunity in most states that attaches to their conduct, meaning they can walk away based upon what they know or didn't know or did or didn't do. and so that will be thrashed out legally. parents in some states also have liability for the conduct of their children based upon what they knew. at this point, it becomes a really horrific issue as to how do we deal with children who might have some mental disease? how do we deal with children that might have the propensity tore violence? on a personal level, the tragedy

we have been following an extreme weather alert all morning long. thousands waking up to what is looking like a war zone after killer twisters slammed the midwest. >> you can hear screaming in the background and right there sirens as well. at least 18 people are dead in three states, oklahoma, iowa,

and arkansas and now we're just starting to see the extent of the damage as the sun comes up. mayflower, arkansas, maria molina is right now. we're hearing the death toll is expected to rise as search crews are looking through the rubble. how bad is the damage? >> the damage is just terrible. it goes for as far as our eyes can see. we can see what used to be structures. they're unrecognizable now. what used to be homes, people's belongings now just laying outside of what used to be their homes. we have metal inside of trees. we have tractor-trailers that were flipped upside down and tossed around like toys. we arrived here a few minutes after the tornado hit and it was chaotic at that time. people were being rescued out of that time. it smelled like a gas leak outside and we saw fires in the distance and also have aerial views now of the path of the storm. these are from a drone.

they are our nation's heros and our nation has let them down. reports that a phoenix, arizona veterans affairs health care system let at least ho veterans did -- 40 veterans die by putting them on a secret waiting list, delaying medical care and treatment. some of them never got it. joining us is the congressman who is calling for an investigation by the inspector general and who says this is just the tip of the iceberg. we're talking to the chairman of the house committee on veterans affairs, congressman jeff miller. good morning to you. >> good morning, steve. >> that is a staggering number. 40 american veterans may have died because they were waiting for the v.a. to call them up and they never did. >> it's sad in phoenix, but the facts are there have been 23 deaths that occurred across the country at places like

pittsburgh and memphis, tennessee, and some other v.a. medical centers, columbia, south carolina and augusta, georgia. 23 veterans and of course you come to phoenix and get a number that's approaching 40. we're still digging into it to find out exactly what happened. >> sure. and we need to point out, there are thousands of people who work for the v.a. and they do great work. but at these particular facilities, the one in phoenix in particular, they apparently had two lists. one was a list where people gave their names and some of those people were on the list for close to two years. then there was the official list that they put in the computer where when they were within two weeks, then they put them on to make it look like they were an efficient operation, which is it wasn't. the demands for efficiencies like that must have come from the top, right? >> well, it certain certainly is a management issue and i think what you have here is somebody trying to get a bonus by showing good numbers and, unfortunately,
