ainsley's emotional trip this week to arizona. >> reporter: dan darling a decorated vietnam war veteran never hesitated to answer the call to serve his country. but after a recent accident he called on the phoenix va hospital to help him and his wife says they didn't return the favor. >> when he fell december 7th of last year and he broke his back, it's taken months to get the va to do anything. they would not set an appointment with the doctor for him. he was scheduled for x-rays, for mris, for bone scans, nerve conduction studies. finally after months of waiting we were referred to a neurosurgeon. he needed a procedure where they inject surgical cement into the back to fuse the bones, and the doctor told him if it was done within six months, it was tremendously successful.

happened. >> what if you can't get to a shelter? what do you do if you're in a house that might be bowled over like this? >> you have to get down to the lowest place in the house. we had a tornado at my house back last june and because my son and i, we knew it wasn't going to hit at the house, we had a chance to watch it. but if it was coming right at us, then we get down in the basement or the lowest part of the house. >> what if you're in the car? real quick. >> if you're in the car and you see the tornado, you have to try to move perpendicular to where the tornado is going. if you can see the tornado moving across, it means it's not coming at you. if it's not moving, but getting bigger, it's coming right at you. you have to take a right or left to get out of the way. so you have to move away from it. a lot of this is common sense.
