12:01 pm
finally speaking from rehab. he says it's amazing and it's just like going to football camp. but he still won't say where he is. let's get to it. >> good wednesday afternoon to you and yours from the fox news net. president obama says the united states will do everything it can to save hundreds of kidnapped girls before terrorists can sell them into sex slavery. the president ordered a military team to nigeria to help that country track down the victims before it's too late. this move comes as we learn more about the terrifying abductions, straight from some of the teenage girls who escaped. it happened more than three weeks ago. the girls were taking final exams when gunmen raided the school and torched it. they forced those girls into trucks, drove them into a forest. some of the victims made a run for it and did escape. but nearly 300 little girls have been missing since.
12:02 pm
nigerian officials said yesterday a second kidnapping took 11 more victims, all of them young girls. parents turned to the nigerian government to help. the lack of progress has led to protests stretching from nigeria to new york city. some family members went out searching the forest on their own. a member of one search party said they came close to an extremist camp and a local rancher warned they'd be killed. they went back and asked the military for help but the soldiers flat out excused. now, the united states military is getting involved and looks like time may be running out. here's the reason. the leader of the al qaeda linked group that has the girls threatened to sell them into slavery. they have done that before, selling child brides for $12 each. jennifer griffin with the rest of this developing story live at the pentagon. exactly what is the u.s. offering to do to help find these girls? >> so far the assistance offered by the u.s. government for
12:03 pm
assistance to find these girls is symbolic at best. there are no military special operations seems s assigned to hunt the leader. there is no information on what resources the fbi is providing. the fbi's elite rescue team is not in play. here is what the president told "abc news." >> we've already sent in a team to nigeria. they've accepted our help, a combination of military, law enforcement and other agencies who are going in, trying to identify where in fact these girls might be and to provide them help. >> no u.s. drones are being sent at this time, we're told. this is a small unarmed team that's being sent, shepard. >> members of congress are demanding more, specifically members of the congressional brack caucus. explain what they're wanting. >> i was at the nigerian embassy where they met today and held a press conference. they stopped short at that press conference outside that nigerian

embassy to call for u.s. troops to be sent. and a leader held up $12 for the amount the leader said he would sell the girls for. >> this is what the children, the girls in nigeria are worth. so our first command and demand is to use all resources to bring the terrorists thug to justice. >> we have people on the ground right now that we have contributed military advice, police advice, phish, et cetera. maybe there's even the consideration, i don't know if this is this case, but there should be, a positive use of drones. >> secretary of state john kerry was on capitol hill today to meet these members of the congressional black caucus to figure out what the next step should be. >> all right. jennifer griffin at the pentagon. thanks. let's bring in robert young pelton, author of "the world's most dangerous places" and a

12:06 pm
come and get me, we will kill kill kill. >> we have to be careful. they're appeal ing ing to emoti. these poor girls came to a closed school system in this main center of this group to do an exam and were rousted by people in uniforms thinking they were being arrested or kept safe. this is a smart group in terms of kidnapping and we have to make sure we don't do something to inflame the death of these young girls >> how do they get the majority of funding? how does it work. snow they typically do kidnaps. don't target vips, target businessmen, get a quick $10,000. they have captured westerners, it didn't work out well. two were killed. they really are on the payroll of the algerians who made a lot of money, millions of dollars kidnapping oil workers up north. they will learn. they have battle hardened veterans against them. be careful when you watch this inflammatory pr, they're trying to bring america to nigeria and

inflame the islamic christian war that's going on there. >> 171 or so million people there. it will be the third or fourth largest country by population in the world by 2050 yet their military won't help out here. have these terrorists bought off the military or what's the deal? >> the nigerian military is actually pretty competent. what will you do when there's 200 young girls in a jungle encampment and you bring in helicopters or guns, that's the last thing you want to do. what you want to do is talk this thing out and work out whether it's a ransom or some kind of deal. inflaming the situation just increases the likelihood these girls will be killed. they killed over 60 schoolboys without batting an eyelash before. >> what you're saying is do anything except send people over to fight. >> let's separate the hot button issue of young girls being kidnapped at school which sounds very taliban in the northern part of nigeria and focus on tactics that deal with anything
12:08 pm
from the school shooting to large groups of young people being kidnapped. there's a difference between the rhetoric and actual tactics that have to take place to rescue these young kids. >> robert pelton, if you'd like to know more about his work. he wrote an entire april issue of vice magazine, about his experience hunting down a rebel leader in south sudan. the article and documentary of his trip are posted on vice.com. police in pakistan have now arrested an phish agent and charged this american for violating anti-terrorism laws after he tried to bomb a commercial flight with a loaded gun clip. that's according to u.s. officials. they have not released his name. police led the man out of court yesterday. they arrested him at an airport in karachi, pakistan's largest city. the "washington post" newspaper reports that the man did not have a gun and apparently forgotten he left a loaded magazine in his bag.
12:09 pm
the "post" reports it was for a 9 millimeter official. the agent was in pakistan as part of an anti-corruption task force. this is but the latest of an american worker detained in pakistan. officials paid more than $2 million for this cia contractor accused of killing two men in pakistan. the agent said he was defending himself after men tried to rob him. >> the defense say one of mexican's most powerful cartels targeted a couple of teens in minnesota all over a stash house that was right in the middle of st. paul. we'll break down the details and what this means for the cartel's reach inside america's heartland. vladimir putin said he has ordered his troops to pull back from ukraine's eastern border. the white house say there's no proof or evidence. presumably there are satellites and there are no pictures. coming up, the latest on the crisis in ukraine.

why do results matter so much? it's probably because they are the measurement of everything we do. for a wireless company, results come down to coverage speed and legendary reliability. so go ahead, stream, game or video chat. that's why verizon built americas largest 4g lte network. because the only thing that really matters are the results you get. so for the best devices the best network and for best results, use verizon.

our priority has always been saving the day. because our priority... amazing! ...is you! the amazing spider-man 2 delivered by the united states postal service. one of mexico's biggest drug cartels is operating right here in the united states, not on the border but in minnesota. according to newly released court documents, the cartel last month hired some enforcers from los angeles and had them fly to st. paul. there, the fed said the gang members kidnapped two teenagers, tortured them, threatened to kill their families all because the cartel suspected the teens stole drugs and money from this

stash house in st. paul. that's the spot right here on my back. it's the small house, the white home that's seen right here. state prosecutors say mexico's cartel was in control of it. authorities say there were dozens of pounds of methamphetamine there and hundreds of thousands in dollars in cash. the cartel claims a chunk of the drugs and money went missing. with hired members of the notorious ms 13 gang out of los angeles to find out who did it. police describe that gang as ruthless from crimes to kidnapping to murder and smuggling. the fed said the kidnappers brought the teens to the stash house, tried to get them to confess and reportedly even started to cut off one of the teenag teenager's fingers before releasing them. authorities have charged four people in this case. mike tobin is live and following it live in our newsroom this afternoon. this is a dramatic escalation in this cartel's reach, isn't it?
12:14 pm
>> you see a few things about the cartels here. you see the brutality of the mexican cartels and you see the sophistication of them as a business. for starters, the fact they had this stash house, a distribution hub in the midwest, also, when there was a problem with inventory the missing meth and cash, they subcontracted a gang to go to minneapolis. >> to put an analogy to this, this is a situation where very valuable property was lost, a loss to the organization, the organized crime entity. what they did was they sent their loss prevention people out to find out exactly what occurred. >> the primary product for them in the midwest is heroin. when the u.s. cracked down on the precursor chemicals for meth amphetamine, that shut down the mom and pop labs and drove the

still only from progressive. eight minutes before the hour now. we now have surveillance video of that stowaway teen who investigators say hit in a jet's landing gear on a flight from california to hawaii. full disclosure here. i didn't believe a word of this. now we have this. the 15-year-old's legs dangling briefly from the belly of the plane. you'll be able to see it here before he lowers himself to the ground and walks to the front of the plane wobbling a little bit. see there in the spot shadow? there he is, a little wobbly. out of the engine he came. didn't believe it. remember this story was so incredible most aviation experts didn't believe it either. officials say the teen scaled a fence at the san jose airport last month and made it into that wheel well. then it took off and flew for five and a half hours to maui. so the temperature up there was like 50 below zero. now unlike the cabin where the passenger sits, the wheel well
12:54 pm
is not protected from the deadly cold and high altitudes. it's not pressurized so there was hardly any oxygen, he could barely breathe. despite all of that, he survived. a doctor checked him out and said he was fine. he was actually in a wheel well at 50 degrees below zero for five hours. you didn't believe it either, trace gallagher. >> you didn't believe it and nor did a lot of skeptics, shep, because they thought he might have been hiding in the cargo area of that plane. clearly the video shows that he cropped down out of the wheel well. he stayed on the ground 13 seconds very disoriented and it took him an additional 40 seconds to make it from underneath the wing to the nose of the plane, he was staggering back and forth. he wandered around the nose and finally walked up to that airport employee and they sat and talked for two or three minutes before the airport employee finally called security. by the way, he was in that wheel well an hour after the plane landed. he told authorities that he had just woken up, shep.
12:55 pm
but you didn't believe it, i was very skeptical. so were a lot of others. now it looks like he was legitimately in the wheel well. >> do not try that at home. to that end he faces some legal trouble, right? >> he's back in california. he could face criminal trespassing charges, which is a misdemeanor here in california. he is now in the custody of child protective services and it's unclear when he'll go back to the family. remember, the reason he stowed away in the first place was to find his mom in ethiopia. his father told him the mom had died and he just recently found out she was still alive. the mother is trying to make her way to the united states to reclaim her children. the 15-year-old still appears to be very healthy, but he did undergo some treatment for breathing difficulty in hawaii and we're told that he's still having a little bit of trouble hearing. shep. >> all right, trace gallagher in l.a. trace, thanks. final thought and closing bell on wall street and the top of the hour top of the news coming right up.
