and be sure to follow us on twitter. that's it for this week's show. thanks to my panel, and to all of you for watching. hope to see you right here next week. fox news alert, as violence erupts once again in eastern ukraine. hello, everyone, i'm eric shawn. right now, hearing reports of ukrainian national guardsmen opening fire on a crowd outside a town hall where they are voting in eastern ukraine. this news comes as pro-russian separatists hold referendums on the secession of two regions in the eastern ukraine, vowing to create their own country. ukrainian government, though, and the west, rejecting the vote as illegitimate, saying they will not recognize the results. greg is streaming live from la shootings and the renewed violence. greg.
12:31 pm
>> eric, and it's important, the polls have just closed in this controversial unless referendum balloting. it's been a hectic and as you know a dangerous day. we'll have more details on the violence in a moment, but let's take a look at the voting that happened today. here's a bit of what we saw. the ballots for this referendum vote on self-rule in the region are marked in private over there and then brought over to these transparent ballot boxes where we can get an early unofficial exit poll. the dodd, or yes have it. >> in fact there, are a lot of irregular aspects to the voting that we saw today. there are all the electoral rolls, if your name wasn't on the list, you could have voted anyway and there's no international observers. also, the wording on the ballot very vague. you could be voting for autonomy or breaking away from kiev or going with russia. the people we spoke to wer very vocal and upset about the kiev
12:32 pm
government. as we noted, all of this happened in an atmosphere of violence at the polling stations we were at, we saw security. you didn't have to move too far away to see heavily armed militants, pro-russian militants are occupying government buildings throughout the region and that's where there was trouble late today. the world that we're getting is that national guardsmen from ukraine shut down a town hall that was used for voting purposes, and we saw the video on this when people started moving towards the building, that's when the guardsmen fired into the air, and we saw one guardsman fire into the crowd. we saw one person go down. the word from local media is that one person is killed. one person injured. no confirmation of this yet, but the western side of the region, yet another hotbed of problems, of conflict between the ukrainian security and the pro-russian militants that are behind the referendum vote
12:33 pm
today. again, the polls are now closed. we're expecting the results, eric, to come tomorrow afternoon. and then we're expecting reaction. both from the separatists. one leader saying he wants to start up his own country right away, and also maybe most crucially from russia. vladimir putin playing a very careful game with this vote, distancing himself a little bit in the last couple days, but to the view of many people, much behind this. back to you. >> all right, greg. in ukraine, that shows no sign of this confrontation ending. thank you so much. the question some are asking today, could moldova soon be in the same boat as ukraine? authorities in the one time soviet republic confiscating boxes that were carried by a visiting russian deputy prime minister. in them were signatures for a petition calling on moscow to recognize the separatist province while visiting the province, they offered support for the rseparatists collecting
12:34 pm
the signatures take back to moscow and he criticized moldova's government for seeking closer ties with the european union. >> and back here at home, people asking today, will the democrats play a part in the new benghazi investigation or sit it out? all eyes are now on capitol hill. you're looking live as washington waits to find out if democrats will participate in the new select house committee on the benghazi terror attack. that panel will investigate if the obama administration downplayed the terror aspect of the 2012 attack that killed four americans. by blaming that internet video for political purposes, just weeks before the presidential elections. at this hour, it's naurt clear if the democrats will take part in that panel or boycott it all together. for the very latest, let's go to steve who is live in washington. steve, first of all, the chairman of the panel, trey gowdy, responding to the democratic charges that the hearing and the panel is basically just a partisan witch
12:35 pm
hunt. how did he respond? >> well, that's right, and gowdy appeared today on fox news sunday saying there's no truth to that accusation. he has no reason to conduct a partisan hearing. listen. >> i have no friends to reward and no foes to punish. we're going to go wherever the facts take us. facts are neither republican or democrat. they are facts, and if we overplay our hand or if we engage in a process that is not fair according to the american people, we will be punished as we should be for that. >> ambassador chris stevens was among those who died in the 2012 attack. united states ambassador susan rice went on the sunday talk shows days later and said it resulted from a demonstration over an anti-muslim video when in fact it was an organized terror attack. a newly released e-mail shows the white house was involved in manipulating the talking points. steve, what are the reasons the democrats are saying they may boycott some. >> they haven't decided what to do, but they point out there have been numerous benghazi hearings already.
quote
12:36 pm
former secretary of state hillcry linton testified at one of those hearings and asks what difference it makes if a demonstration or a terror attack caused four people to die in benghazi. democrats say the process at this point is not driven by the need to uncover facts but the need to fire up the gop base in the midterm elections and beyond. >> we have participated in all of the other seven investigations. if it's a fair, open and balanced process, absolutely. we don't want to see reckless and irresponsible use of congress and taxpayer money to do these witch hunts. >> republicans have already chosen the members who will participate in the select mi committee. democrats still trying to decide how to handle what they see as a highly politicized process. >> in just a few minutes, we'll talk to brian about what he thinks will happen. steve, thanks so much. now to the abducted school girls in nigeria. you know, nearly 300 snatched by those islamic terrorists. international assistance is now

country, but there is a growing fear it may be impossible to find all of the missing girls taken by boko haram nearly three weeks ago. according to a senior u.s. official involved in the search for the girls, they fear that the girls have already been split up into smaller groups and aren't in one large group, making it very difficult to find all of the girls at once, and some of the children could have been sold as sex slaves or as child brides, already, there are reports that two of the girls are dead, having been bitten by a poisonous steak while trekking through the jungle. 53 of the girls actually have escaped, but nigerianomps have routinely issued false statements in this entire process so it's very difficult to know what the truth is. as international efforts beef up, boko haram isn't disappearing into the jungles of northeast nigeria. they launched a series of attacks this weekend, including blowing up a key bridge that goes into that sort of remote area where they operate.
12:39 pm
also, abducting a woman and two of her children and killing an unknown number of people in some of these attacks. now. even as the u.s. is providing military intelligence support and help to the nigerian government, the pentagon is saying u.s. special forces in the country will not be part of any type of ground operation to go attack boko haram or find the troops. the u.s., eric, are there to simply help and advice, provide things like intelligence and logistics support. not to be part of a ground operation, eric. >> all right. this as the world and people in our country wait and certainly hope. conor powell live in jewelry for us. >> coming up at home, a university community is now in mourning. following that tragic hot air balloon crash in virginia. coming up, we'll bring you new details on the victims. plus, house speaker john boehner sitting down with sunday morning futures anchor maria bartiromo. an exclusive interview. he said he had no choice but to launch an investigation into the

attack in benghazi. why our next guest agrees with that. saying the search for answers did not have to come to this point. >> i don't want to do this. this is unnecessary, but for 20 months, the white house has refused to tell the congress the truth, refused to tell the american people the truth. they have done everything they could to obstruct an investigation. marge: you know, there's a more enjoyable way to get your fiber. try phillips fiber good gummies. they're delicious, and an excellent source of fiber to help support regularity. wife: mmmm husband: these are good! marge: the tasty side of fiber. from phillips. stick with innovation. stick with power. stick with technology. get the flexcare platinum from philips sonicare and save now. philips sonicare

attacks? >> it's a terrorist attack, and i think others, i know hillary clinton and others identified it as a terrorist attack, and that was my view. >> joining us now is byron york, chief political correspondent for the washington examiner and a fox news contributor. great to see you. >> good to be here, eric. >> leon panetta is a longtime great democrat. he calls it a terrorist attack, but nancy pelosi is pretty harsh, calling this panel a kangaroo court. what do you think the democrats are going to to? >> panetta and everybody else at the pentagon told investigators in the house they knew from the get-go, from the first moment, this was a terrorist attack, not some kind of demonstration gone awry. what is interesting is we have heard so much about the administration's obstruction and covering up of benghazi. that's certainly true for the white house and the state department, but the pentagon, the pentagon, republican sources
12:46 pm
on the hill told me they have cooperated fully with the investigation. investigators from the house armed services committee controlled by republicans, were able to talk to everybody at the pentagon, up and down the chain of command, they were able to get documents, information, all the stuff they needed. basically, i was told if the rest of the administration had cooperated by the pentagon did, the benghazi investigation would probably be over by now. >> the white house would say we did cooperate and then we got that e-mail the other week that was, some say, was pretty stunning. what do you think will happen with this panel? can the democrats simply say we're not going to be a part of it? can the republicans do it alone? >> they can do it alone, no doubt. they would rather not because it would be branded as a partisan investigation from the beginning. democrats are divided. the first impulse was to boyscott it. there was a select committee selected by republicans
12:47 pm
investigating the response to hurricane katrina, and nancy pelosi beforehand announced it as a sham and democrats boycotted it, so there's precedent for doing that. i guess the sense now is democrats are thinking it would be better rather than boycotting, to have a few people on the committee, people who could make the counterargument said, who could keep an eye on what is going on, who could perhaps steer the direction in this direction or that. look at darrell issa. elijah cummings have been pretty effective, democrats believe, at times arguing against whatever representative issa was doing at that time. i think it would be a good idea to have nobody on this new panel? >> it could boom rang against them. i pointed this out, they didn't boycott the watergate hearings, and then a special panel looking into chris christie and the bridge closing, 12 members,
12:48 pm
eight democrats, 4 republicans. republicans are outnumbered two to one. >> that's the way it is. when they control the legislature, they get the majority of the votes. pelosi said they would want an equal division of seats on the committee, which is not going to happen. by the way, pelosi herself appointed one select committee when democrats were in command, and there were nine democrats and six republicans on the committee. >> quickly, do you think this committee will happen? >> oh, yeah. the investigation will go forward. they'll probably find new stuff. will it be a day-to-day fight with the republicans or will they do it themselves? >> at least a week or so before we get these decisions. >> that's right. >> always great to see you. >> thank you, eric. coming up here, a burning question for millions of teens and adults celebrating their

12:54 pm
>> mating. >> yes. when you're considering a job, that's important to remember. four of the top ten are in texas. why would that be? basically texas has a very pro business climate. so there are a lot of startup businesses willing to hire young graduates. that's an important thing. san francisco is on there, too. the only one in california. that's because it's silicon valley. that's because of technology, which is why seattle is up there, too. just south of san francisco in san jose, the heart of silicon valley, i can tell you it has the highest starting salaries. nearly $5,000 per month. the lowest is lincoln, nebraska, about $2,000. when it comes to salaries, that's not the first thing you should think about? >> what should you think about first? >> it is one of the first things but it's not necessarily. you shouldn't just go straight to where the salaries are. you have to consider your quality of life. also you have to consider are there promotion opportunities.
12:55 pm
can you grow in this industry. or if you move to another company, could it be more than a lateral move. so salary is not necessarily number one. you have to look at the cost of living. san jose is the highest salary. it's the most expensive apartments at about, again, $5,000. >> what if you don't live in one of those cities or may not move to one of those cities. the labor participation rate is at a record low. the lowest it's ever been. what do you do, if you can't get a job and you're young and doing the best you can? >> that's one of the things that's important. this generation is not as willing to move as past generations. you do have to be willing to go where the jobs are. that participation is rate is largely because people have dropped out. they are discouraged. this study at least shows you there are some places you can go and get a job. >> it always works out generally somehow. >> that's important to remember.
