long i'd like to love. forever as well. why not? thank you for being part of the "the real story." now john scott is in for shepard smith reporting live from the fox news deck. have a great weekend. >> gretchen, thank you. blasts of flames and mountains of smoke. the california wildfires burping out of control. thousands evacuated and word some fires may be the work of arsonists. this army ranger helped to save prisoner of war jessica lynch in iraq. he was shot in afghanistan and doctors could not save him. now america mourns a hero. >> a police officer who risked everything to try to stop an out of control truck. you'll see how this ended coming up. >> wildfire alert.

firefighters around san diego already have their hands full battling several raging wildfires. now cops in southern california busted two teens who were trying to start more blazes. officers say witnesses saw this 19-year-old, along with a 17-year-old, trying to start at least two brush fires. investigators say it's not quit clear whether the pair had anything to do with the fires already burping. officials -- already burning. the fires have destroyed eight houses and an apartment building. firefighters found a badly burned body in an area where homeless people hang out. and we're getting a better idea of just how bad this fires are. nasa released this picture showing the thick smoke visible from space. we have live team fox coverage. we have an update on the weather can conditions. first to will carr in san marcos, california. how much destruction today, will? >> reporter: well, john, these fires have obviously been burning for several days and there is a real trail of
12:02 pm
destruction. they have burned a number of homes just like the home i'm standing in front of. this home today completely gutted. now, the good news is that the conditions today have been pretty calm. that's very good news for firefighters. for the past couple of days the winds have been some of the strongest that firefighters have ever seen in this area. they say that there have been gusts of more than 100-miles-an-hour. the cocos fire is the biggest threat for the area. only 10% contained. there will 1,000 firefighters working to get the fire under control. one of those firefighters tells us he can't believe while they're working so hard, that two teenager would allegedly be trying to start more fires. >> i feel for the public. i feel for this home owner that lost their home. that's what it is about. the destruction of life and property, and then putting the firefighter and law enforcement at risk for some careless act that somebody thought was okay to do. >> they have now lifted some
12:03 pm
evacuations in the area but they're still 11,000 people who can't return to their homes right now, john. >> what's the reason that some of the homes noor the fires are burning, others escape unharmed? >> reporter: residents keep asking me that, actually, and it's really for two reasons. first and foremost, the hard work of the firefighters. the second is something called 100 feet of defensible space. a requirement in california. that means you're not supposed to have trees, brush, within 100 feet of your home. firefighters say that if they come on a number of homes being threatened by fires that actually they will choose to defend the homes that are cleared out for 100 feet because that's the homes that have the better chance of saving because they can't save every house. they don't have the resources. i want to show you this home we showed you had burned. this home is actually surrounded by trees. this tree has completely dark right here, just shows all it takes is for one ember to drop
12:04 pm
into any of these trees and then the house can catch on fire really in just a couple of minutes. so, john, they tell us they've seep a number of homes that have burned and several of those homes are surrounded by trees and brush and they didn't have a chance once the fire got close. >> and obviously will carr, one of the homes right next to where you're standing, still in good shape. thank you very much. firefighters could soon get the big break they anyone to gain the upper hand. we're live in the extreme weather center. rick? >> short term they're getting the break. weather is about to change. temperatures still very warm. look at this. 92 in l.a. 88, san diego. 99, almost 100 in el cajon. today's high temperatures still very warm but better than they were yesterday, and tomorrow you'll see a big improvement. we'll start to see really a big onshore flow. when we have an offshore flow, air coming off the desert, all of that air is incredibly dry
12:05 pm
and the humidity levels very low. when we get an onshore flow that brings temperatures up to and increases the humidity in the air and that certainly beneficial. doesn't bring moisture and that's what they desperately need. zero chance of rain over the next week, but those temperatures certainly improve. the big problem that we have here is the entire state of california is at least in receive very drought, and take a look another how much of this is in extreme and exceptional drought. a drought we have never seen the likes of in california, and so much of the state -- all of the state dealing with big rainfall deficits. we should be at the end of rainy season right now. that means no more rain until maybe october or november. we're heading into dry season and are dealing with this kind of drought. tells you how much worse it's going to get over the summer. so this is the beginning of a very, very long, dangerous time across much of california. >> thank you. police say they are working to see if those teens charged with
12:06 pm
trying to set fires had anything to do with the wildfires destroying people's homes. a local television station in california reported yesterday eight of nine major wildfires there may have started under suspicious circumstances. let's take it to a lawyer, anna marie is a former federal prosecutor and adjunct professor at fordham recall law school. they have a 19-year-old and a 17-year-old in custody. the 17-year-old would be charged as a juvenile but the 19-year-old is an adult and could face charges. what are the charges for something like this? >> at this point it's attempted arson there are two small fires set they have witnesses that put these two at the scene for. they may not be related to the big fires but law enforcement isn't sure yet. they have to investigate and figure out if they are or not. the two of them are cooperating. they apparently had evidence on them, it's unclear what the evidence was to us, although law enforcement knows. and they also made statements. so, it seems they would at least
12:07 pm
be charged with is attempted arson. potentially depends what they set. depends whop they evidence shows. they could be charged with arson, could add in aggravating circumstances and enhancements and could be facing potentially quite a lot of time. >> one of the fires apparently killed somebody. it's -- at it going to take some time to do the occupies -- autopsy and to forth. could there be murder charges if they're tied to the fire that killed this guy? >> potentially would depend on the circumstances such as did they intend to hurt somebody, was there an intent for bodily injury in setting these fires. so, law enforcement will have to show certain prerequisites to charge them with that. or if they can show the fire set to hide a murder, that would be much simpler. >> so tough to prove. i just like to watch things burp. didn't many to hurt anybody earthquake that's one of the problems law enforcement many
12:08 pm
times has, but it becomes easier if you have a cooperating witness. and here you have two defendants that have been taken into custody, and both of them apparently are talking with the authorities and potentially cooperating as far as what the authorities are saying. so if one says, well, we met up and he told me that we're going to do this for this reason, then you have a witness who can corroborate and give intent as to why they went to a certain place and why they did something. >> apparently they were picked up trying to start two fires but there are nine fires burning in that part of california right now. eight of them seem to be at least suspicious in origin. so, these guys may be responsible. there would be other fire bugs. >> that's right could be copycats, could be just saw the fires burning and wanted to get in on the action. or -- one of the issues that becomes very difficult in these cases is law enforcement has to try to figure out how those other fires started, and when you have fires that are that intense the evidence burps --
