1:00 am
be there you must be. >> hello, everyone. i'm andrea tantaros, along with kimberly guilfoyle, bob beckle, eric bowling and jet ta. >> president obama made this pledge to our veterans during his first year in office. >> and we're keeping our promise to fulfill another top priority at the va, cutting the red tape and infish dis that cause backlogs and delays in the claims process. america will not let you down. we will take of our own. >> nearly five years later, the commander in chief has a broken sacred trust with many of our veterans who are still without
1:01 am
health care and some have even be left to die. no one has been made accountable and the administration is trying to spin itself out of the biggest scandal yet. >> he has taken action. he's responded to it. what he's also done is acted on and so has secretary shinseki. >> the man grilling jay carney in that clip, ed henry. ed, it doesn't appear that anyone has been held accountable, however today the secretary shinseki, he made the following statement and said that he accepted the resignation of the under secretary for health at the department of veterans affairs, dr. robert petzel, but isn't it true he was going to design anyway, they are using him as the fall guy? >> they accepted his resignation. we find that out minutes after
1:02 am
the press conference ending. jay carney was not asked about it. it turns out last fall the va announced that robert petzel, he was planning to retire. he was caught up in other allegations last year. the bottom line is he really being held accountable. on the one hand, the president nominated somebody on may 1st to replace them. so petzel would have stayed for months on the job. now he's out. so there is some accountablity there. but on other hand you got republicans saying this is not accountable, because he was already on the way out. the president, the reason i was pretty sooning jay carney, the only time the president has commented on these allegations was on april 28th in manila a
1:03 am
news conference where i asked him about this scandal. he said he was aware of it and and the big issue the white house is worried about how this is mushroom. it's an election year thing. now, with veterans, you have not just republicans going after it, you have democrats saying we need answers. we've got millions of veterans around the country wondering what's going on. >> so does this feel like the benghazi stuff? the irs stuff? the nsa stuff? it's almost every time something comes up, the administration says boy, you know, we're going to get to the bottom of that. as soon as we get the bottom and we'll let you know, and some guy says hey dude, that was two yeergses before we find out what
1:04 am
was going on and in fact what we find out some of this stuff is made up. >> he thinks there's a pattern here that where something pops up, you name the scandal, the issue, the controversy, however you want to phrase it and the cabinet secretary takes the heat. if it is kathleen sebelius on health care, and eric shinseki on veterans affairs and the president doesn't comment on for a few weeks. so it appears that the heat is on these cabinet secretaries or under secretaries and let me give you one new nugget of information. i went to the va website to find out who did the president nominate to replace petzel. it's dr. edward morealski. cbs news revealed that the hooins va medical center has secret waiting lists, more than one, and people not getting care, veterans not getting care was being hidden.
1:05 am
well, it turns out that the president's nominee, i'm not saying he had anything to do with the secret waiting lists, but the man that the president nominated to take over for robert petzel works at the hospital that is under investigation right now. >> hi, ed. it's kimberly. listen, there's a lot of outrage over this because people are very dissatisfied with the white house's response. it's more like smoke and mirrors at the fun house at veterans experience and now total disrespect with what appears this new nomination because this is another hospital that's basically burning down like rome and that's who you are going to put in charge. how is that sending a message to the veterans that they are taking this issue seriously? death lists where people are serving the country and you put them on a wait list to die. it's like ewe than nash i can't of the veterans. >> that's going to be a question for the white house. there's going more hearings like the one we saw yesterday. the fact that the va lists him as somebody who works at at a
1:06 am
hospital under investigation, is going to be yet another complication for this white house. in terms of getting to the bottom of it. jay carney will push back on what you just said. the president takes this seriously enough that he took one of his top aeds, rob nabors and moved him across the street and said figure out what's going on and we'll fix it. they are going to have to find some answers soon otherwise as you suggest, the pressure is going to get hot. >> ed, this is beckle, just out of curiosity, did you mention that there were 2 million veterans coming off of two wars, that have overwhelmed va. and this was an issue before obama of ever heard. it goes back to the eisenhower
1:07 am
administration. john mccain who is screaming outrage on this, if i will bet you anything that in his files, in his office, in arizona, there are veterans complaining about what happened in that va hospital and all of a sudden everybody is concerned when everybody fully well knew this was -- and every member of the house and senate can protect these va hospitals. those were the questions i would have asked if i was there but that was your business. >> you raise a fair point. we should point out that the va has been a massive bureaucracy that's been under fire for a long time. i don't know if it's all the way back to eisenhower, however, the bush administration has to answer why they didn't fix it either. there were two wars started in the bush administration, that certainly swelled the ranks and the logs of veterans who need benefits and we got to take care of the men and women who serve for us so you got to follow-up
1:08 am
on that. but you right, that happened in the bush administration, but i got news for you, we're now, it's five, six years later, and i'm teasing you about it but president obama is now in office, and you play that bite from 2009, and he said regardless of what happened before, he's going to make sure these veterans have their benefits. now, yes, there were problems before he took office, but he's the commander in chief now. it's at his desk and he's got to figure it out. >> i accept that, but the number of people who were not getting benefits is now down appreciatibly before he took office. >> wasn't there fore shadowing how the administration feels about veterans? you remember the sequester. they tried to put up a wall to keep the veterans during the sequester out of the world war ii memorial to me triggered a little bit disrespect. i wanted you to listen to this clip. how many veterans have to die
1:09 am
before this administration wakes up? >> how many stories like this, how many lers like this, how many dead veterans do you need before somebody asks the question within the white house maybe this guy isn't the best stew ward of these veterans? >> the question, jake, is are we doing everything we can to get the veterans the care -- >> but you are not. this letter was sent a year ago and you guys ignored it. >> and we have been working aggressively to ensure that not only health care expanded, opportunities made more readily for their case. people held to account. >> they were warned ed. multiple letters. it does remind me a little of benghazi with the request for more security. there were plenty of warnings and they ignored them. >> this is a different story than benghazi, but jake tapper is an outstanding journalist, i think he asked some very tough and fair questions that the
1:10 am
white house chief of staff had a difficult time answering. the president on down, they keep saying we care about veterans, we're going to take care about this. jake was pointing to a letter from year ago, he fore shadowed he end hinted at some of those problems. we can't really say there was a crystal ball saying mr. president 40 people are going to phoenix, that's not fair to the president. there were warnings and jeff miller said he never got a letter back from the president. here's the bottom line when you ask how they treat about veterans in the white house, what i know about eric shinseki is he was wounded. he was an army general who was wounded in combat, and so, yes, i think he understands the difficulties men and women in uniform face. that should be said. but nonetheless, even though he has that, you still have to be a strong manager. you have to figure out how to get this bureaucracy to work and you can't do that and the benefits don't get to the veterans, you can't just say because he is a war her row, he
1:11 am
gets a pass. he has to be held accountable. >> ed, how much longer do you think the president can get away without giving a serious comment about this? i don't think this is a partisan issue. i think this is an issue where the country is united. how much longer can he get away with that? >> he will have a news conference in the next few weeks. he had the last one was april 28th, as i mentioned and so i would expect he's going to face questions on this. you could even see possibly an interview at some point in the next couple of weeks where they pick some outlet, whether it be military, newspaper, something to say we got to get out of there. i think he missed a bit of an opportunity on tuesday. he had a medal of honor ceremony here at the white house and the president said we've got a commitment to veterans. he pointed that out, but he did not directly address the scandal. maybe it wasn't the right place, but with a roomful of veterans with a medal of honor ceremony,
1:12 am
by the way, you are hearing about these awful allegations, but we're going to figure it out. i believe he's going to say something about it soon. >> we know he's commented on much less. the sexuality of nba players. ed, thank you so much. >> lots more to come on "the five." including our facebook free-for-all. it's back send in your questions to facebook.com. "the five" as a new twitter handle, it's now
1:16 am
1:17 am
christian and she will reportedly be be hung after she gives birth. >> it's indicative of this wave of radical islam that we're seeing in the middle east. it's one more indication of what a serious problem it is and why the united states and others need to take a more comprehensive view. these are not isolated incidents. what happens in sued an, in libya, and nigeria, this is part of a larger pattern and so far we haven't heard the president speak to it. >> you know, these infidels over there who do this, i'm going to turn it around on you, you call us infidels. if you have sharia law, that runs against everything we believe in as a country, why
1:18 am
don't we break diplomatic relations with these company? >> i think you could. i'm all for that by the way. my new found libertarianism. i think we could break ties with anyone who thinks sharia law -- this woman was adultery, death by hanging and 100 lashes. anyone who said that sharia law should be put instituted, you are right, bob, cut off ties with them. i don't know if you can cut off trade with them, there's a big portion of the saudi people who want to see sharia law. >> we won't cut off because of
1:19 am
the oil. that's another reason i'm for the pipeline. cut them off. cut them off completely. in the last couple of weeks, people have finally begun to recognize what is happening there with the 250 or 75 girls that were kidnapped in nigeria and now this situation. this has been going on a long time and no one has paid attention to it. >> hundreds and hundreds of years, they have been killing not just men and not just women, for marrying a christian. they have killed women and maimed women and over going out in public without having the accompaniment of a family member. they have killed women for driving in some muslim countries. you mention the saudis, they have spent hundreds of millions of dollars funding. the first lady brings up the
1:20 am
hash tag, she does bring awareness of the issue. we don't understand that radical islam has been here for hundreds and hundreds of year. they have been murdering thing. let me ask jed die aone question. this incident, i bet most people did not know that you could be put to death by hanging if you said you were christian and not islamic. and revoked your islamic faith. maybe we're learning something about this. maybe people will realize we're talking about a bunch of infidels, stone age people. >> i think part of it is educating people and running segments like this and having people sit home and watch and understand the severity of what's going on. ties should be cut. we're a country that stands for freedom. everything that we stand for stands against this. we stand for freedom of
1:21 am
religion. individual liberty. that goes in direct contradiction to what's happening here. we have a responsibility to not just say we condemn this. you bet, i would say cut ties. >> kimberly, they have signed, sudan has signed international conventions on human rights which specifically says this kind of thing should not happen. it is true in their law this should happen how you sign an international convention and not be bound to it. >> that's the problem. they are in violation in that. her husband to no avail has begged the united states to get involved and they have chosen to not do so. what is the message here? i thought they were talking about let's not have a war against women. well, there is an international war against women to the point where this woman is going to be lashed 100 times and then she's going to be hanged. how is this okay? why aren't people outraged and the crime of which they are accusing her by the way does anyone care that she's not
1:22 am
guilty of those crimes? marriage to a christian man. she is christian. they can prove in fact she was never muslim. it's not like a conversion. but they are going to be graceful and wait until they are child is two years ago. >> in fair rns, they have spoken about them. >> would you suggest cutting off all aid to sudan? i'm going to remind you of this when you tell us that we should be continuing aid to certain countries and i'm going to remind you, well if sharia law in that country -- >> let me make it clear, if sharia law dominates that country's legal system it's something we cannot abide and we should not participate in. >> but the president believes we have a shared history of tolerance with islam. >> if i've seen some tolerance of islam, i have not seen it anywhere soon. you've posted your burning questions for us at faib
1:23 am
1:27 am
>> back by popular dpand, it's facebook friday but we got a twist this time, it's twitter friday this time also. we asked you to send your questions to us to our new twitter handle. let's get started. the first question goes to bob from facebook. mary w says bob, how did you enjoy being on outnumbered today? >> it was actually a lot of fun. i enjoyed it. they are good, gracious, smart,
1:28 am
beautiful, and being a thorn in the midst of four roses is a nice thing to be. i think i shocked a few people with what i call honesty, some people call it stupidity. i think it's a good show. >> cool. you did a good job. >> also for bob, bob, you said your new year's resolution was to get healthy? are you? >> i should be. i had a lot of -- i've within side lined for a little bit. by the way, i'm drinking vegetable -- all pure vegetables in juicers. >> making your shirts look yellow. >> yeah. andrea, liby says what is something that you do every day that you can't live without? >> i can answer that for her. >> why does your mind always go
1:29 am
to the gutter? >> because it lives there. >> the gym. >> what's your favorite exercise at the gym. >> the treadmill. nkts how about this one? andrea, do you have to run for ? i think you would serve the people justly. >> no, i think i would probably end up strangling somebody if i ran for office. i don't know if i would pass the vetting process either. >> you certainly would not. >> you don't know. >> i know one thing, you wouldn't pass it again. >> yeah, right, if i wanted to. >> kimberly. peggy asks what was kim's first job? >> okay, it might have been the job -- i'm trying to think -- it was when i was manager of the dell i ka test san because of my love of salami, i told mr. kim
1:30 am
that i would be perfect for it. and i actually got to pick some salami and he also paid me. >> to kimberly, teresa asks, kimberly, we always watch you dancing to the music where before the commercials. what's your favorite type of music? >> okay, well, i like what do you call it, pop music, i like music like that. dance music, anything that i can move to but that kind of cuts across the board. i like to practice my dancing so i can be recession proof. there i am. that's my exercise. >> you like a wide range. >> i like a wide range. i like elvis, and u 2. people don't know that we pick our own music bumping in and out of our segments. >> i'll nb a restaurant or bar or song and shazam it and try to
1:31 am
get it on the show. twitter, what's the genesis of jedediah's name? >> my mom got it from barn aby jones. it's a man's name. it's also biblical. >> you are 100% italian? >> i am. >> did your wife give you any advice about men? >> yeah. stay away from italian men. when you were a teacher, what grade did you teach, and what did you enjoy most and like least about teaching? >> what i like the least were disciplining high school boys. that was a challenge. >> what happened. >> well, i was a dean, you know. they come into your office, they
1:32 am
put up a little bit of a shy and they get shy. but high school is their bad boys. you got a challenge with this. >> did you ever get hit? >> yes, absolutely. in fact i used to tutor a kid who got a little inappropriate and i had to talk to his mom. >> this is for eric from twitter. who is, eric, did you larry about snap chat? do not just go! >> i hear that. i love snap chat. by the way, if snap chat again, please, can you get a snap chat all? i've said that a number of times. you put a picture up, and you can draw little things on it. you can send it out. >> could you imagine if he starts doing it? >> how about facebook, do you and bob get into those heated discussions while you all are just hanging out? >> before the show every day,
1:33 am
bob sits out in front. he gets a crowd around him, inevitably someone will say something to bob, fire him up and he and i will get in the heated discussion, even last night, does bob really believe all the stuff he says? he absolutely does, but you guys get along, i say yeah, we get along great. >> we do and you saved my life. >> next time he's joke -- choking on a shrimp walk the other way. >> mike asks i would like to know who or what inspires each of you and what you're all most thankful for? >> oh, kg. let's take it around the table. who inspires you? what are you more thankful for? >> i'm more thank. for my family, my mother, and my father, even though they are no longer with me, they are an inspiration to me every day because i feel like i've been blessed with so much that i want to give it back. venling bobby? >> what inspires me is the continuing to fight the equality for america. what i'm most grateful for is
1:34 am
i'm a citizen of this great country. >> inspires me, i would say probably my faith, and secondly my father and his example which is very inspirational but also pretty demanding and i'm most thankful for my family, period, end of story, we're very close-knit and i don't know what i would do without my mom and siblings. >> inspires me would be my best friend michael. who is the best man i know. he makes me a better person ever single day and most thankful for my parents who put up with me. >> is michael your boyfriend? >> he was at one time. and now he's my best friend. who knows? >> way to get -- he's very handsome. >> he is. >> and he's an italian man. >> he's a sicilian man. >> i'm thankful for my family and faith. inspires me, my mom on her death bed, her last two words in the world whispered in my year, never quit and i believe that

1:40 am
>> oprah winfrey. >> i want to thank you for being a pioneer, the first in the room to knock down the door, to break down the barriers, to pave the road that we all walk on. please welcome, diane sawyer. robin roberts, lara spencer, katie couric, savannah guthrie. >> this is my legacy. these are my legacy and i thank you all. >> well, it wasn't easy for barbara to say good-bye as you can imagine so she said this instead. >> from the bottom of my heart to all of you with whom i have worked and to all of you who have watched and been at my side for so many years, i can say thank you, thank you, but then who knows what the future brings? maybe instead of good-bye, i should say i'll -- abientot
1:41 am
which in french means see you later. so abientot. >> it was so exciting. you were waiting to see who was going to come out next. a fitting tribute to a remarkable woman. everybody was clamoring around her and just to say hello and tell her what an inspiration she's been. >> it's such a competitive business in television, especially females, to have all these women in the world and all of them, her saying that was her legacy. that's really cool, and i guess she's going to be on with o'reilly tonight and the interview, i saw a clip. it was really good. >> let's take a look at the clip. you can see it. >> is there a war in women in
1:42 am
america? you are one of the top women. >> i don't think so. >> no war on women. >> somebody asked me recently if i was a feminist, i thought that was an old fashioned word fem nifts because women can do whatever the men do. >> oprah had mentioned that barbara walters has been such an inspiration. bill o'reilly has always enjoyed a good relationship with her. >> i learned a couple of things today. number one, michael douglas that her dinner parties are amazing. everyone sits around the table. barbara leads in this run down of tom iks that are on a sheet of paper next to her, she goes like a show run down like "the five." that was interesting to me. and also this morning, i learned that geraldo had a crush on her and tried to sleep with her in
1:43 am
panama. wow, that was interesting! >> i didn't know that either. >> he said it. i'm not making this up. this is her life. her life is in front of the camera. i will be willing to bet she will be spending a lot more time in front of the camera. >> you know, what i love about her, she's gutsy and she's tough but she also has a lot of heart and i think that's something that's a balance that's really hard to strike sometimes. and she's interviewed politicians and world leaders. that's such a challenge to remind people i'm a person and emotions and human. she taught us how to do that, how to bring a little bit of that to my work every day. so i'm incredibly grateful. >> imagine the stamina. the world veents, the incredible leaders that she's interviewed. news makers always would be a big interview to sit down with barbara walters. don't count her out because she still seems a lot left to go
1:44 am
give back and bob you are a friend of hers? >> i am. she's done as much for feminism as anybody i can think of. the face of it. i mean she's -- i -- she opened the doors and a lot of people followed in behind her and there are a lot of people who will always be standing on her shoulders and i think that's something to be very proud of. >> we look forward to more things from barbara walters and some great interviews ahead. check out her book. still ahead was an nba coach just fired booze he's outbone -- outspoken about his christian faith. i might rhesus i tate bob.
1:48 am
>> it appears it's not just christians abroad who are under attack. former golden state warriors mark jackson was fired last week. a new report claims one issue that led to his dismissal was his open display of his christianity. we reached out to jackson's rep for comment. she passed. the owner of the warriors
1:49 am
disputes the report. andrea, mark jackson was a very openly religious person. he was a strong supporter of traditional marriage. when jason collins came out as gay, he made the comment that he was going to pray for him. that rubbed some people the wrong way. do you have his religion was the reason he was let go? >> the fact that his spokesman wouldn't comment on it. he's also given interviews and he said look i didn't go around beating people over the head with a bible. so he does seem a bit defensive over that. is it the only thing? perhaps not. i mean, he was a pastor when he was hired. however, i do think there could have other issues. he was public fights with the owner. the president is also openly gay, so i do think that jason collins thing probably upset the team president.
1:50 am
i'm sure it did have a factor in it because of the way he's reacting. he does seem defensive about his religion. >> now, kimberly, if religion was a part of this, where is the aclu and does he have a legal leg to stand on? could he sue? >> he could, if he has some specific statements or instances to back it up. right now all we have right at this point is just speculation. that's not going to be enough. i mean, the fact that he was a devout christian, unless they can tie it in, he was purposely fired and i can tell you from a contractual standpoint, there's plenty other clauses in his contract that they can use to terminate him but keep in mind he was very popular with the players, and with the immediate staff with the not with the owner. they clashed and the warriors are coming off two of the most successful seasons that they have had. one, he is going to get pick up by somebody else and doesn't want to sue and be the guy who is the trouble maker or he could have a career in brawfting in
1:51 am
sports. zero-sum game if he's going to try to go forward with a lawsuit. >> some are saying that race has something do with it. this was an race issue that he's an african-american. and african-american coaches have a harder time. >> i want to tell box 3 in the preakness. >> you told me 1-3-8. >> i don't think it's a race issue at all. i think most likely, most likely, it is a question of -- because kimberly pointed out, this team is doing pretty well. the players like him. you give me a team that's doing very well and they like the coach, it seems to me his religion and the fact that he's got this gay ownership is probably a clash that's very difficult to overcome. >> christian guy. i disagree with you. mark jackson had 51 wins. great season. kimberly points out it's a program on the mend, doing
1:52 am
great, but the owner and the general manager both pointed out that they think mark jackson lost the confidence of the team. also, george carl won 57 games in a season and was fired and let go. so substantially 10% more wins and they were also let go. i think when you lose the confidence of not only management and maybe some of the players, time to go. steve kerr was going to take the job. great replacement. everyone is -- >> no coaching experience. >> the thing about steve kerr, he came off the bench with the bulls in their heyday. he has the respect. he's a great announcer. he has the respect of every player on the court. >> maybe he ought to put the jersey back on then. >> the players were very supportive of his religious beliefs. >> i think it's very hard -- knowing the conflict between the very religious fundamentalists
1:53 am
1:57 am
at some moment, we want to take a moment to honor a real american hero. you've been hearing about this, he's the one of the people who rescued prisoner of war jessica lynch in 2003. this man was shot in afghanistan. sergeant major martin ra mir he's. what you might not know is he served 22 years faithfully in this country as a army ranger. he was shot in afghanistan and went back to texas and died. 49 years of age. >> how sad. bob. >> tomorrow marks the 60th anniversary of brown versus board of education, the landmark decision on the kansas school system that finally did away with segregation in the
1:58 am
classroom. it was a major victory. the ncaap had an awful lot to do with that and i think it was something that really blazed the trial for the civil rights moment. yesterday, i got some heat for using the word brawds. i'm going to try not to use it. i'm going to say chick s or how about babes. >> show tomorrow at 11:30, cashin' in. it's going to be a good one tomorrow. we're talking about that the illegal immigrants that president obama let out. >> can i contribute to jonathan's getting his ear's plastic surgery done? >> if you want.
1:59 am
>> the white house will be holding a talent show for kids next week. it's going to be hosted by michelle obama. celebrities are going to be there. sarah jessica parker, and many others. it's to highlight the turn around arts program it's a program for low performing schools can go and help them get engaged in the arts. kids get to feel like stars for the day performing for celebrities. >> this story is bizarre but unsurprising. the university of saint thomas in minnesota decided to have what they call hump day. they have a petting zoo atmosphere for college kids. students proceed tested they said that having a camel on campus could be offensive to middle eastern students.
2:00 am
>> bob is trying so hard. >> i shouldn't have even said hump day. don't forget to set your dvr so you never miss an episode of "the five." welcome to this special edition of hannity and for the full hour, we'll be joined by a distinguished studio audience to analyze the ignorance of the left. as the search for 300 missing nigerian girls continues, rather than calling for military action, liberals form late add social media campaign to bring back the kidnapped school girls. it started when michelle obama
