religion on campus, political correctness. >> okay, dan. that's it for this week's show. thanks to my panel and all of you for watching. i'm paul gigot. hope to see you all right here next week. start with the fox news alert about 20,000 acres now have been consumed near san diego. wildfires continue to tear across that region. so far, a 57-year-old man has pled not guilty to arson charges in allegedly starting one of those devastating fires. america's nehead quarters. >> thousands of firefighters remain on the frontline battling those flames. they are getting help from military and civilian helicopters swooping in and dropping water on the flames. and at least eight homes are gone, plus an apartment building with 18 units. >> i don't know how high the

flames were. probably 50 feet. >> everything is in there. everything is gone. >> do they know how many of these fires at this point were caused by arsonists? >> reporter: up to six fires they are dealing with today, fire officials say they believe at least some of those must have been lit on purpose. investigation is ongoing at the moment. they should know next week. we will -- it will give us an idea next week how they were started. we have seen three people being arrested in the past few days in connection to some of the smaller fires it is authorities are saying that the penalties of those people may pace with the severity of the damage. >> the charges for someone who commits arson range from 16 months to ten years to life in prison depending on the

circumstances these were -- two small fires but at this point we have -- don't know the full extent and we don't have information as on whether they relate to anything else. and so we will continue that investigation. >> we learned that the fire here in north county of san diego was started by construction of the backhoe digging a trench. 1 1/2 thousand acres that got torched as a result. >> you hate to see the stories of people losing their homes. so where do the fire crews stand with the six large fires you mentioned that are still rages in san diego county? >> they are still raging. containment improving by the hour. we understand that -- we will show you the map. lit give you a much better idea of what is going on. you can see just how it spreads around the area.

the fire is moving east towardses ctowards es k dash - escodi -- escondido. about two-thirds of the fires are almost contained now. you know, it will take a lot of effort. still 1400 firefighters staying in the area despite the improvement in the conditions here. and they are going to probably stay until next week. this is a case that's going to be a tough fight. a lot of people in shock how intense it was so early in the season. back to you. >> we are early. it is only may, may 15, 14, 17. not sure. just rea for sure. thank you for that update there from san diego. the other good news -- as we look at the extreme weather

center. other good news is the weather is beginning to cooperate a little bit. getting firefighters a hand. hi, j.d. >> yes. this is the setup we had last week. santa ana winds and high pressure across the great basin and clockwise throw in towards the canyons and passes and the valleys and that's what gives us the potential for gusty winds, drying out the conditions so the temperatures were high. some cases we were breaking record high temperatures last week. 100-degree range. very low humidity but as you mentioned we have this onshore flow right now. you can actually almost see it with the satellite radar imagery. all of this onshore flow from the ocean. an ocean influence is bringing the temperatures down and relative humidity up which is excellent news for them. however the fire danger shifted a little more eastward. we are seeing winds certainly perk up across the great basin. and the four corners area. along the coastline, that's

where temperatures are starting to decrease and humidity is going up and the winds are going down. great news. mid 70s up into the 80s tomorrow even better. around the los angeles area with mid 70s and even heading into monday and tuesday, temperatures dropping significantly. the bad news is the drought monitor is incredible. we are into 100% severe to exceptional drought across this area and the deficits are amazing. over a foot deficit here for parts of redding. los angeles, you need over eight inches to get on par for your rainfall season. we weren't p aren't going to see any significant rain until october and november. so we have a lot of month goes before we will see significant rainfall. we will see temperatures going back to average across portions of california in towards the southwest. again, which is welcomed news for firefighters. it is going to be a very long

wildfire season. that is for sure. >> thank you very much for that update. new fallout in the disturbing scandal that has been rocking the department of federal affairs. in the wake of the allegations the records were falsified, in order to give the appearance patients were being scenically when apparently that may not have been the case. critics say the allege fake list and waits cause deaths. the v.a.'s undersecretary of shk stepping down even though he was set to row tire this year anyway. many lawmakers say that much more needs to be done to fix the problems at the v.a. and senator john mccain spoke about that in the weekly radio address. >> clearly the v.a. is suffering from systemic cultural problem that congress cannot resolve with peace meiece meal response.

stretching from its top political leadership all the way through to its career civil servants who as recently suggest that may have been too often motivated by all the wrong incentives and rewards. >> the administration wants to wait for the inspector general's report. it is investigating before taking any more action. much more about the very troubling allegations in a live report later in our newscast. meanwhile, there are new developments in the tragic mining disaster in western turk write. with government officials say that that the search for the missing miners is now over. after the last two bodies were recovered more than 300 people now confirmed dead in the underground fire with public anger spilling into the streets. police using tear gas and water cannons on protesters. many of them calling for the current government to resign over the disaster. connor powell live with more from jerusalem.

>> reporter: officials say they have located the final would bodies and the operation moved from a certain much operation into an investigation of what caused this now. more than 300 people died making it the most deadly maining accident in history. 485 people did escape or were rescued. many that survived complained about the safety procedures at the mine. they say the accident could have easily been avoided. still government and mining officials have insisted the disaster was not meg generals and the mine was regularly inspected but the accident and turkish government's response fueled public anger across the country. the turkish prime minister has come under fire for his reaction to the disaster which critics claim he has been insensitive and political protests have erupted. police arresting protesters, using water cannons, rubber bullets and using harsh critics to disperse crowds around the mining area. last summer we saw similar

protests spread across turkey when police cracked down on environmental protesters in istanbul and increasingly turkish society is divided between opponents. you fight being whether or not the government there is undemocratic and authoritarian. arthel, there is a divide in turkey. we saw a huge protest last year whether or not the mining accident will cause nationwide protests ask still up in the air. what we are seeing continually in turkey is that there is a parting of the two camps. >> thank you very much for that update in jerusalem. >> brand-new fox poll shows exactly what people think of the new congressional investigation of benghazi. this as we are now learning new details about who exactly will be working for that committee

deceitful about the event surrounding benghazi former political director, matt, under president bush. good to see both of you gentlemen. >> great to be here. >> matt, i will start with you on this one. do you believe that president obama and former secretary of state hill clinton were playing a game of deception and support your answer for me. >> i don't know if i want to make the charge they were deceiving the american people. clearly the -- they were deceiving congress and not giving all of the information congress had asked for. that's the reason why we are having this special committee because congress has been asking for documents and for answers and the administration has been stonewalling them. we only got these e-mails after a court ordered them to be released. congress has no choice but to do this probe and i think that hill clinton's real problem is not

with republicans on the hill. it is with the fact that the american people in the poll pout the screen shows that they are questioning her truthfulness. it is the american people. >> stephen, how do you see it? >> i think the same poll also says that two-thirds of the respondents think that the republican committee hurt political reasons. a poll that says that americans think that politicians were playing politics. that's not that surprising. to matt's point, though, this isn't a committee that needs to happen. it is -- you already have five congressional oversight panels and seven reports and you have had over a dozen hearings. i'm not exactly sure what the republicans were doing over the last two years. look, they have a right to -- establish another committee if they wanted. that's congress' right. it is not what the american people want them to do. what the american people want them to do is work on jobs, economy, deficit, and benghazi doesn't even register on people's radar. what it feels like is an increasingly desperate effort by the republicans to find some political issue that sticks

before the midterm. >> let me judgment in there. the new majority staff director of the committee gave us an exclusive statement and it was one-sentence statement. listen, i understand that my job is to find the facts through a pair process. before i get you to respond i want to pull up another fox news poll. one of you hinted at this one. it is the reese reason republicans in congress are investigating benghazi. 63% saying political gain and 30% are saying it is to get to the truth. is it possible to achieve a fair process. >> i think it would be possible to achieve a fair possible 'fess they had a balanced committee which democrats asked for. if they want to demonstrate it isn't just another political witch-hunt. but, again, look, republicans -- >> wait. let me stop you. what -- what would you feel would constitute a fair and balanced committee? >> committee of 12, six

life and using your medical records to do. so the plan makes it very clear that they want to try and build up the nation's resilience by monitoring the data and by impacting people's lives on a regular basis. and so what is also very clear is they plan to use election ronnic medical records to have this kind of access. the plan calls for integrating medical records and data systems between government, clinics and hospitals and it means the american people will have to medical privacy from the medical government and they call for research using this data which means we won't have any privacy from the government doing the research and we say is this one of the reasons why the recovery act of 2009 required the hospitals and doctors to have records interoperable with the government by january of 2015.

was this part of the scandal to get into our records and monitor us on a regular basis. >> and what if they say this is needed to help us. the director of science and technology said the benefit for health and security of all americans and indeed the world's people is needed for this extremely worthwhile effort. the government would say this is the way they protect all of us from potential problems and track disease and threats. >> good intentions are often the way the government moves to assume more power and to build itself larger and larger and to intrude into the public. but the interesting thing is a gao report in 2010 looked at the different snem system -- systems, bio triggers, they are not very effective and limited in their capacity.

and putin and russia digging in their heels in ukraine and those on capitol hill may call for even more sanctions. new fallout over the department of veterans affairs scandal in the wake of reports from across the nation of v.a. employees falsifying records. robert petzel, the under secretary of health care, is stepping down but many lawmakers say much more needs to be done to address the health care needs of our veterans. with more now, molly henneberg is live in washington. >> reporter: john mccain is one of those lawmakers. he said taupe in the gop radio address that there needs to be a total refocusing of the v.a. on the core mission of serving veterans. this is as investigations have begun or will into treatment delay or falsified records at

v.a.'s in ten states. >> it has been months since allegations that veterans died when the information became public. today the obama administration has not reacted. this has created a look of confidence for the v.a., the very agency that was established to care for them. >> eric shinseki demanded the immediate resignation of petzel who was scheduled to retire later this year but stepped down last year. secretary shinseki said he is not going anywhere and has promised the v.a. will do more to improve timely access to healthcare. but one mox fuse analysts say v.a.'s across the country may not have the money and the personnel to do that.

possible vice presidential candidate. the mayor would be taking over for current secretary sean donovan. rescue workers ending their search for victims from turkey's tragic coal mine explosion retrieving the final two bodies bringing the death toll to 301 victims. this is as tensions run high in the mining time on virtual lockdown by enforcing a ban of protests -- on protests for tuesday's disaster to trigger demonstrations across turkey aimed at mine openers and -- mine own and government officials. firefighters around san diego getting some much-needed relief today. cooler conditions and that is helping in the battle against a variety of wildfires there. the crews still work to try to get the upper hand on the continuing flames. investigators are trying to figure out why so many fires broke out at the same time.

and there has been at least one arrest in potential arson. dominique live in san diego with the latest. man, with the drought in california, how are the firefighters getting their water. >> reporter: it is hard here in southern california and we have the diminishing resources going down. 25 miles to the south we have lake pojen and then the reservoir that have been two key level resources that are low. and they will dip into people's swimming pools that they are so desperate for sources of water. despite being so close to the pacific, one of the challenge is sea water corrodes the equipment cal fire has got and it has proven to be tough. and as the summer goes on as hot

as it's been so far, the water levels will go low and that means with the fire season ahead of us, it will be tough getting more resources. >> and just beginning too. and dominique there was that evacuation order at camp pendleton. >> a housing community was ev evacuated but now they can return to their homes. but there are three separate fires in camp pendleton and the marines are committed to putting that out. >> the conditions are are how merion corp answers the call and runs to the sounds of guns, whether it be combat or natural disasters at home. >> reporter: so the marines are taking care of that themselves.

we have one other fire in escondido that are moving east. and slow winds are coming down and the humidity in the air, if it can get up to 20%, that alone could help put the fires out and they are praying for that, even as they are containing a lot of fires. 60% of the main big six fires are under control. >> that is good news. dominique. thanks very much as always. arth arthel? mother nighture is beginning to -- nature is beginning to cooperate to give firefighters a hand there. and janice is live in the weather center. and dominique said if the humidity increases that could help the firefighters. is that a likely chance? >> absolutely. i think we could get 20% humidity over the next few days. a system from the west is

breaking down the high pressure across the great basin with the clockwise winds funneling through the passes bringing us the santa ana winds. we won't see it stretch as far as los angeles, but relative humidity goes up and temperatures go down and the winds will subside as well. the fire danger is going to move eastward. we could see the potential for fires breaking out over the four corners area but for l.a., san diego, that area we are seeing several wildfires burning, the conditions are better. so the temperatures today, high of 82 in los angeles. but better conditions into sunday, monday and tuesday. temperatures in the high 60s with the relative humidity 20% or even 30% and the winds will diminish significantly which is great news. the bad side of this, unfortunately, is california, you are into severe exceptional drought for 1 # 00% of the -- 100% of the state and that extends into the four corners

and it will not get better. and the summer drought look is dire stretching into the southern plains. so for the next couple of days we have mother nature helping out. the foreseeable future is going to be drought conditions for the next several months. back to you. >> that is not so good. >> we'll take the good news. >> okay, janice dean, thank you. in the wake of the botched lethal injection last month, one lawmaker is asking for a more humane execution, bring back the firing squads. that is what paul ray said we should re-enact. he is planning to propose that as an option for criminals on death row. more with this is brian. what does he want. >> since 1976, three people have been put to death by firing squad in the u.s. during that time, more than 1150

have died from lethal injection. it has been the preferred method of execution in the u.s. but last month's botched set failed due to a blown the man died 40 minutes later due to an apparent heart attack. they believe death by hiring squad is more humane and prevent botched executions. ray saying the prison dies instantly. it draconian and bad, but

. critics question the resignation of the top health care official of the department of veteran affairs. robert petzel stepping down one day after he testified before the senate veterans affairs committee. petzel was slatded to retire -- slated to retire at the end of the year any way. so is this first step enough? with problems spreading across the country. how bad is the v.a. health scandal. john collins joins us. and it happens to be today,

armed forces day, which we honor those who served and we have horrific allegations that our vets, the brave men and women who served this country were kept waiting and they say led to 40 deaths but the officials deny that. how bad is it? >> it is horrible because it is a cover-up. they knew what they were doing, falsifying records and putting people on a false waiting list and they would languish. we had a warning sign on this at walter reed and we had veterans from the iraq war come in and they were terribly treated. and it is time for a shake-up because we have a cover up and it means we need to dig into it. >> and there is allegations in colorado, and the nurse telling people to wait. >> seven cities. >> seven so far. and now texas, georgia,

peninsula -- pennsylvania and other states. do you think this is systemwide or intensionally or just it happens to be individual cases? >> no, i don't think it was intentional or directed from washington. but clearly their messages and signals and budget constraints and demands from washington to compel people to take sloppy and incorrect shortcuts. this actually is a warning sign for the rest of us, not just those of us that are veterans. these kind of waiting list scandals are common in canada and britain and other places where they have national health care where they have pressure to cut budgets and expand care to more and more people. so this is a warning sign for obama care, because i will tell you all of the things with obama care in it will lead to waiting lists and doctors dropping out of lists. >> and so you see this potentially spreading to theót8 national health care system

because of the affordable care act. >> eventually. eventually all of the pressures -- because remember, the pressure that obama care has is we have to save costs, save money and help new people. and that is what happened. and you ration care by adding people to a waiting list. in this case the waiting list could have been deadly. >> but the president has alzheimer's said we could keep our health care plan if we want it, we could keep our doctor if we want it and it will increase the coverage in america. >> coverage is not treatment. can you say i have health care coverage. i have the right to go ask for health care, doesn't mean you will get it on time or the right specialist. those are two different things. the president was telling the truth. but coverage is not the same thing as treatment. and these veterans who may have paid the ultimate price for being on that waiting list, they
