2:00 pm
be there you must be. >> hello, everyone. i'm andrea tantaros, along with kimberly guilfoyle, it's 5:00 in new york city. and this is "the five." >> well, president obama made this pledge to our veterans during his first year in office. >> and we're keeping our promise to fulfill another top priority at the va. cutting the red tape in efficient sys that cause backlogs and delays in the claims process. america will not let you down. >> we'll take care of our own. >> nearly five years later the commander and chief has a broken sacred trust with many of our veterans still without health care and some that even have
2:01 pm
been left to die. now no one has been held accountable and the administration is trying to spin itself way out of what can be it's biggest scandal yet. >> they provided -- they're saying this is how much it matters. >> he's taking action. he has responded to this. he has spoken about it. i'm sure there will be an opportunity for him to speak about it again. he has also acted on it. >> man, grilling jay carney. ed henry joins us now. so ed, it doesn't appear that anyone has been held accountable. however, today, the secretary made the following statement and said that he accepted the resignation of the under secretary for health. but isn't it true that he was going to re-sign anyway so they're using him as the fall guy but no one has been held accountable? >> well, we'll see. you're right, they accept his resignation. we find that out minutes after
2:02 pm
the white house briefing ending so jay carney wasn't asked about that resignation quote unquote, because it turns out that last fall the va announced that he's the under secretary of health that oversees the hospitals across the country, he has already been planning to retire. is he really being held accountable? on one hand, the president nominated somebody on may 1st to replace him. so he would have stayed on for months on the job while the senate works it's ways. the senate can take forever on nominations. so he would have been on the job for months or a year and now he is out. there is some accountability there but you have republican jeff miller that runs the house veteran's affairs committee saying this is not accountability because the guy was on the way without. meanwhile, shinseki is still there and the only time the president publicly commented on the allegations was on april 28th in manila, a news
2:03 pm
conference where i asked him about this scandal. to his credit, he answered it and said they were going to get to the bottom of it but hasn't said a word sense. that's the problem for him as well. the issue is how freaked out they are at the white house about the potential for this to mushroom. compare it to benghazi where they say it's a joke. it's an election year thing. now with veterans you have not just republicans going after it but democrats saying we need answers and we have millions of veterans around the country wondering what's going on. that's real political pressure here. >> so does this feel like the benghazi stuff? does this feel like the irs stuff? does this feel like the nsa stuff? it's almost like every time something comes up, the administration says, boy, you know, we're going to get to the bottom of that. the buck stops here with us. as soon as we get to the bottom we'll let you know and then it blows over and some guy goes that was two years ago by the time we find out what's actually going on and then we find out some of the stuff is covered up.
2:04 pm
>> you're making a point that eric cantor tried to make yesterday. he put out a tough statement and said he thinks there a pattern here where something pops up. you name the scandal or the issue or the controversy or however you want to phrase it and the cabinet secretary takes the heat. if it's eric shinseki on veterans affairs and the president doesn't comment on it for a few weeks. so it appears that the heat is on the cabinet secretaries or under secretaries. let me give you one new inconug of information. it turns out, you can find this on the web. on the va website he's listed as a doctor at the junior va hospital in illinois. why is that significant? earlier this week cbs news revealed they have secret waiting lists. more than one and people not
2:05 pm
getting care was being hidden. and turns out that the president's nominee, i'm not saying he had anything to do with that but the man that the president nominated to take over works apparently for the va at the hospital that is under investigation right now. >> hey ed, it's kimberly. people are dissatisfied with the white house's response it's like smoke and mirrors and now total disrespect with this new nomination because this is another hospital basically burning down like rome. how is that going to send a message to veterans that they're taking this issue seriously where people are serving the country and you put them on a wait list to die. >> that's going to be a question for the white house. there's going to be more hearings than the one we saw yesterday. i have to say in fairness, jeffrey could be a great doctor. maybe he is somebody that could turn this around. but the fact that the va lists
2:06 pm
him as somebody that works at a hospital under investigation is going to be another complication for this white house. so in terms of getting to the bottom of it, jay carney will push back by saying the president takes this seriously enough. he took one of his top aids and moved him across the street to the va and said figure out what went wrong and let's fix it. obviously the clock is kicking. you can't keep kicking the can down the road. they're going to have to find some answers soon. o wise the press is going to get hot. >> i don't want to tell you how to do your job, but just out of curiosity, did you mention when you asked your questions that there were 2 million veterans coming off of two wars, that overwhelmed the va? did you mention this has been an issue well before obama was ever heard of, just back to the eisenhower administration and did anybody mention the fact that veterans are angry, they send in letters, constituent
2:07 pm
letters. john mccann who is screaming t outrage. i will bet you anything that in his files and office in arizona there are veterans complaining about what happened in the va hospital and all of a sudden everybody is concerned. every member of the house and the senate can protect these va hospitals. >> those are questions i would have asked if i were there but that's your business. >> you raise a fair point. we should point out that the va has been a bureaucracy that has been under fire for a long time. i don't know if it's all the way back to the eisenhower administration but certainly the bush administration rappelled with this and they have to answer for why they didn't fix it either. in terms of iraq and afghanistan, jay carney made that point at the podium. it bares repeating. there were two wars started in the bush administration. that certainly swelled the ranks and the logs of veterans who need benefits and we have to take care of the men and women that serve for us.
2:08 pm
so you have to follow up on that but you're right. that happened in the bush administration but i have news for you bob. it's five or six years later and i'm teasing about it but president obama is now in office and you play that bite from 2009 and he said regardless of what happened before he is going to make sure the veteran versus their benefits. there were problems before he took office but now it's at his desk. >> i accept that but the number of people not getting benefits are down appreciably since he took office. >> hey, ed, wasn't there forshadowing on how this administration feels about veterans. remember the sequester when they put up the barricades literally. he said it seems like they're stone walling the veterans, you can't do that. they tried to put up a wall to keep the veterans out of the world war ii memorial which to me triggered a little bit of disrespect. i want you to react to this click from jake tapper who asked
2:09 pm
how many veteran versus to die before this administration wakes up? >> how many stories like this? how many letters like this, how many dead veterans before you have somebody that says maybe this guy isn't the best steward of these veterans. >> are we doing everything we can -- >> but you're not. this letter was sent a year ago and you ignored it. >> and we have been working aggressively to insure that not only is health care expanded and opportunities made more ready to our vets but that people are held to account. we will continue to do that. >> they were warned, ed. multiple letters. it does remind me a little bit of benghazi with the request for more security. it's not that this was a surprise. it's government run health care and there were plenty of runnings. >> is that guy tapper from journalism school? >> this is a story of benghazi. jake tapper is a good journalist
2:10 pm
and he asked questions that the white house chief of staff had a difficult time answering. the president on down keeps saying we care about veterans and we're going to take care of this. jake was pointing to a letter a year ago from the house veterans affairs chairman that said he hinted at some of these problems. i'm not sure we could say there was a crystal ball saying mr. president, 40 people are going to die in phoenix and that's not fair but there were warnings and he never got the letter back from the president. here's the bottom line. what i know about eric shinseki is he was wounded. he was an army general wounded in combat. so yes, i think he understands the difficulties men and women in uniform face. that should be said. but none the less, even though he has that, you still have to be a strong manager. you have to figure out how to get this to work and if you can't do that and the benefits don't get to the veterans, you can't say because he's a war hero he gets a pass.
2:11 pm
he has to be held accountable like any democrat or republican on the hill. end of story. >> how much longer do you think the president can get away with not giving a serious comment about this without facing backlash? i don't think this is a partisan issue. this is an issue where the country is united. how much longer can he get away with that? >> he'll have a news conference at some point in the next few weeks. the last one was april 28th as i mentioned. so i would expect he's going to face questions on this. you could even see an interview in the next couple of week where is they pick some outlet whether it be military newspaper or something to say we got to get out there. i do think he missed a bit of an opportunity on tuesday to your question. he had a medal of honor ceremony here at the white house and in fairness he said we have a commitment to veterans and we'll keep that up but he didn't address the va scandal. maybe it wasn't the right place but with a room full of veterans maybe that was an opportunity right here at the white house,
2:12 pm
this week, to say by the way, veterans here, you're hearing about these awful allegations. i'm going to figure it out. he didn't say that this week but i bet given this pressure he's going to say that soon. >> he did miss a good opportunity. but he's commented on much less. the sexuality of nba players and the bracket so it's not that important. ed, thank you so much. >> good to see you. >> lots more to come on "the five" including our facebook free for all. it's back. send in your questions to facebook.com/t facebook.com/thefivefnc. you can tweet any questions to us and you may get them answered right here. back in a moment. ♪ in pursuit of all things awesome, amazing,
