examination. he expressed to the deputies that he was having difficult business his social life and he probably would not be returning to school in the next year. the deputies discussed options with him in terms of support offered resources to him and ultimately cleared that call without further action. i'm not going to go back and play monday morning quarterback at this point. we're still investigating this incident and exactly what happened at the intersection that they have. you have to understand that this is a fairly routine type of call that is quite common place. and the deputies who are well trained and are adept at handling these types of call did contact this gentleman in an
6:01 pm
effort to find out whether his welfare was imperilled and did not reason for the reasons that they have as a result of that contact that he required any further care. i won't second guess them at this point. as you are aware in the manifesto he lays out a plan on what he intended to do. i will without getting into too much detail, i will say that three of the, there are three people that were murdered in the apartment. it appears as though that happened prior to him going on this mobile shooting rampage. the three male victims were apparently stabbed repeatedly with sharp objects. and it was a pretty horrific crime scene. the question is, did he shoot
6:02 pm
himself or was he shot by sheriff's deputies? it would appear as though he took his own life at this point. we're still in the process of determining exactly who those people are and making positive identifications and notifying the next of kin so i can't comment to that question right now. we're going to be looking at any and all evidence that we can gather. we are asking anyone -- as you can imagine, we have interviewed a huge number of witnesses. and there are probably still many more witnesses who we have not yet been in contact with. if anyone was privy to any information about this case or if anyone actually witnessed any aspect of this rampage that occurred last night, we
6:03 pm
encourage them to contact the santa barbara county sheriff's office. i can't comment on that, nick. the victims who were killed, the first three were killed in the suspect's residence. the next two were killed outside the alpha phi sorority. and the remaining fatally injured victim was killed at a business, at a delicatessen. three in the apartment, two at the sorority and one in the delicatessen. that's six by my math. then we had one additional that was the suspect's.
6:04 pm
we had a total of seven fatalities. [ inaudible ] all three weapons were purchased prior to his contact. you have to understand when a firearm is purchased, there is a check run on people who purchased the firearm. but if a person has not been institutionalized or has not been taken against their will and put on hold, that information is not entered into a database and it is not disqualifying information for someone buying a gun legally. we did not have any 911 calls related to the stabbing and we

subsequently found the victims while we were in the process of investigating this case. and went to the suspect's residence. i'm going to take one more question. >> we have not been in contact other than recently, other than last night with his parents and interviewed them and notified them of his death. thank you, ladies and gentlemen. we appreciate it. >> hi, everybody. i'm the public information officer. i know there are still a lot of unanswered questions and i know we have a complicated list of locations. so we do have a map for you guys with all the locations that i can give you. and i'll be around to help with you any additional questions that you have. thank you for coming. we will probably do another news conference. we don't have a time yet. hello.

welcome to justice. the sheriff's department just wrapping up their press conference on the deadly shooting rampage in california. dominic has the latest. >> reporter: we've been hearing from the santa barbara sheriff's department. just precisely what happened last night, the sequence of events and learning very much what actions happened blow by blow, quite frankly. extraordinary opening really to that press conference. the details of how the suspect actually appears to have kill his three roommates at his residence. what is quite incredible there is there was clearly a history of problems with the people that he shared, the three males that he shared his residence with. one thing that the sheriff was saying, that those males that were found at the residence had been stabbed repeatedly. so it sounds like a very vicious attack before he went on that

rampage through the neighbor here in isla vista. and he just went on about how he got in that black bmw, gone through the neighborhood, first of all firing on three females, two of which died very shortly after that. and then as he continued to fire on other people, culminating in hitting a bicyclist who went across the hood of his vehicle, smashing the windshield and ultimately that crashing and then the deputy dragging the suspect from the car. by the time they got him out and actually handcuffed him, they see that he had died of some sort of head wound. no clarification on whether the head wound was the result of an exchange of fire with the deputies or whether it had been self-inflicted. one thing that the sheriff was saying, however, was that he may certainly had appeared to have received some sort of head to the hip which might have explained the way the car

careemed into the vehicle. so an awful lot of details to absorb. one other thing the sheriff was saying, that the suspect, elliot rodger, his parents had been interviewed and his body had been formally identified. so rounding out the family so far, all the involvement with the family. he went into some detail with what regards to what the manifesto was saying. a very extremely disturbed young man. also a love more from the authorities to come out. i'm sorry. a lot more to come out as they delve into the 141 rambling manifesto. judge? >> all right. thank you. the lapd detective and fox news contributor mark furman joins us. we heard a chilling recount by the santa barbara sheriff's department of ten different

places where there were shootings, stabbings, drive by shootings, where he exits the vehicle, goes into a deli and kills someone. two bicyclists injured at different times and then he accelerates speed. this kid was really on a rampage. what is your first impression? >> well, first, he was definitely motivated to do as much damage as he could. there were no going back once he killed three of his roommates. he probably did that in some way. incapacitated him so he could stab all three. he didn't seem to be physically able to overpower three people so he had time to think. and load up his vehicle. and then it seems like most of his victims were not people that he knew. he tried to get into the sorority. when that failed, then probably the second option was just go and drive and find females that
6:10 pm
he could shoot at. >> do you know what's interesting, there were three previous documented contacts. one of them where he actually accuses his roommate. and accuses him of stealing three candles and then, mark, makes a citizens arrest. so you and i both know, having done this. had the kid rodger actually lived, he would have used some kind of insanity defense. but here's a guy who understood exactly how to make a citizens arrest. who was able to purchase weapons and apparently was purchasing them before there was contact with law enforcement. what about according to the sheriff, there were many contacts that he had with mental health professionals. how does that play in? >> well, first, it's a college campus. they'll have a lot of contacts
6:11 pm
with students and on the campus. that isn't surprising. as far as the roommate situation, a roommate dispute or a business dispute, that's not unusual either. having citizens arrest for petty theft. we never wanted to deal with it. but if they're obligated to make the arrest, that alleviates the law enforcement official from doing it. that's not a problem. when they went to his house about a welfare check, that's exactly what it is. a family member usually a parent or a grandparent is concerned about somebody so they send somebody to a location. you check on that person. the person is okay. and the mental defect that this young man has, it is very obvious that he was highly manipulative. it was part of one of his probably multiple disorders. so he diffused that situation. . all right. thank you so much for being with us. we'll try to bring you back. and coming up, who is this 22-year-old kid who decides to take a gun and kill people over

6:16 pm
lafltd it is about a half a square mile. and they have around 13,000 students between the city college and the university. what we have is really a recipe for an absolute nightmare. and this was the biggest weekend, i'm told, of all the weekends. the city college finished their exams this week and there are two weeks left on the university students. but i was able to locate about five eyewitnesses, actually, to the shooting which, an element of the shooting whereby their vehicles were shot and one was shot three times and removed from the scene. and they actually saw him go out of his way and run down, cross over the lane and run down a skateboarder who was coming toward him. >> pat, when the sheriff described so many places where he would shoot and then get out and accelerate and go into a deli. this kid was really determined to kill as many people as
6:17 pm
possible. is that your take? and what does that tell you? >> not only my take but i had the opportunity to speak to these eyewitnesses. and it is their take as well. it is extraordinary. he was rolling through the streets here in his black bmw. no different than the angel of death on this six-minute, think about it. six minutes of absolute destruction and savagery. unbelievable and the most terrifying thing is the densely populated nature of this beautiful beach front college community. he had, count it, 41 additional clips for his two six hours in his glock .9 millimeter. that's 400 something runs. >> he had over 400 remaining rounds left. but dr. ludwig, let me go to you. i started reading there 140 page manifesto. his plan of what he intended to do and all the suffering in the world has been at the hands of humanity. particularly women. and it is kind of interesting. he says very shortly after my seventh birthday, the news came that my mother and father were
6:18 pm
getting a divorce. my life would change after this. now, in this manifesto, he despises women. what is going on in this kid's head? >> it is so interesting. when i was first listening to him, oh, he is angry with women for rejecting him. then i started to have a different idea. is this somebody who is trying to fight against his homosexual impulses. this is a kid who couldn't connect and felt enraged and wanted to obliterate anyone that made him feel like a nothing. that's what this guy felt like. a nothing on the one handled. and then a grandiosity on the other hand. he is talking about how beautiful he is, how sophisticated he is. but clearly early signs, i don't know, i haven't diagnosed him. early signs of schizophrenic. that's what it sounds like. >> one of the things that he
6:19 pm
talk about in the manifesto was, his mother, apparently at the end of may, my mother told me that i had to move to santa barbara on june 4th. it sounds like a lot of this goes back to his own mother. and the killings were not just of women but men and women. >> right. and i think too, was he angry at the men for not choosing him? this is a kid who was just angry in general and probably felt rejected. he couldn't connect. he could not feel loved or successful. maybe he didn't feel like a real man. ? if he had this many problems, very quickly, and he had all this contact with mental health professionals. it reminds me of james holmes in colorado, in aurora. what does the school say about it? he was a student, right? i can't imagine he was normally. >> if you have early signs of schizophrenia, sometimes it is hard to tell the difference. you can appear depressed which
6:20 pm
is kind of normal for kids in the 20-year-old age group. heed my appeared odd but sometimes it is hard to distinguish. if he is not revealing that he plans to kill anyone or is keeping this very close to the vest because he wants to have a dramatic surprise for people, then it is very hard to tell sometimes. it is easier to tell in retrospect. >> very quickly, what's the mood there right now? >> reporter: the mood is very somber, judge. as i mentioned, i spoke to five or six eyewitnesses and i've also spoken to over a dozen individuals who are students here. i'll tell you another layer of horror -- >> we've got to go. we've got a break coming up. >> you've got it, judge. >> thanks for being with us. sorry to rush. take care. and we're coming right back. i make a lot of purchases for my business.

with me now former israeli counsel general in new york and retired armor major general and fox news military analyst. ambassador, i'll start with you. your country borders egypt. would this election have an impact on israel? >> hi, judge. good to be with you. it's three things actually we're looking at from an israeli vantage point. one is that there will be a consistent period of stability in egypt, which has not been the case in the last three or four years with two election campaigns and repeated chaos and

constitutional breakdowns. the second would be that egypt would remain committed, as it has been, by the way, in those three, four years, to combatting terrorism in the peninsula and the gaza strip. as the viewers may remember, it borders israel on two sides, on the north and the east, but it borders egypt on the south and the southwest. and the third thing is that the israeli-egyptian peace agreement remain intact and stable. if you take those three as a package, this is what we're looking at. and i think there is a sense of cautious optimism in israel that the general election would lead to that. >> all right. general, you and i were just in egypt several weeks ago. who do you think is in the best position running for president
6:54 pm
to protect the interest of the united states in this election? >> that's a great point, judge. remember, this is about the egyptian people. but the point that these egyptian officers made to us is that it's also about the united states. look, there's only one bull work in that broad swath of the middle east that is taking aggressive, offensive action against al qaeda and that's the egyptian military. they're doing it with the libyans in the west that are beginning to form malitia groups. while the rest of the middle east is either against us or neutral. egyptian mail tear has actually taken the fight to the military. >> to you again, ambassador, al, you believe he'll bring some
6:55 pm
stability if elected president, has asked our president for the help on the war on terrorism. is it smart for the u.s. to provide aid to egypt at this point. >> it absolutely is. >> yes. >> both of you can answer that. go ahead. >> go ahead, general. >> it's very important to understand that the egyptian mail tear, because of their chronic economic situation are trying to fight this war on a shoe string. in many ways, these enemy militias are better armed than the egyptians are. the united states has committed to supporting the military for over 40 years. now is not the time to pull back on that military aid when the egyptian military is fighting, in many ways, our battles for us. >> no question. e kwipt of course being bordered by lib gentleman. i'll go back to you, ambassador. you know, you've got egypt which
6:56 pm
is 80% muslim. are you surprised that a country that is muslim is so opposed the muslim brotherhood where as in the united states they are not seen as a terrorist group? >> i'm not surprised. i'll tell you why, judge. the muslim brotherhood's concept of government was to aspire to be 49%. then one day after the down fall in the elections, they found themselves with the proverbial 51%. which means that it comes with both responsibility and the accountability of actually governing. >> all right. i'm sorry. we are e we're going to have to cut you off. thanks for being with us. we're going to do this story again. thanks so much. the success of your small business depends on results. go vests! all organic, and there's tons of info on our website. that's why you rely on the best for your business. and verizon delivers the best devices on the best network.
