called the work of a mad man. and rolling thunder, saluting the men and women who have served this great nation. the annual tradition one american way to say thank you and we are in your debt. again tonight with a presidential thank you delivered in person. president obama and an unannounced trip this memorial day weekend to afghanistan, his fourth visit to that country since taking office years ago and it comes at a time of great importance to our military as we prepare to end our combat role in afghanistan by the end of this year. the president met with several top generals and our ambassador about our presence there going over. the administration hinting there could be official word about our troop levels. one person he didn't meet with was the outstanding president

harzai. he did call him we were told. wendell is at the white house tonight and the secret service is getting pretty good of sneaking in and out with the president in tow. >> folk have said they have gotten good at putting together a motorcade that doesn't really look one. 13 hours later he was in afghanistan addressing some of the 33,000 u.s. service men and women who are still in afghanistan most of whom will come home by the end of the year. >> by the end of this year, the transition will be complete and after gans will take full responsibility for their security and our combat mission will be over. america's war in afghanistan will come to a responsible end. >> how responsible may depend on whether this man, an dull la, abdullah wins the run-off election in afghanistan june

14th and keeps his promise to allow the u.s. to keep about 10,000 u.s. military at the end of the year for training exercises. >> we'll probably be announcing some decisions fairly shortly but i thought it was important for me to check in direct with folks face-to-face before those decisions were finally made. >> the first round of afghan elections were successful and he said the training of afghan troops is going better than he expected a year ago. >> a big visit but also big on the horizon is that scandal with veterans medical care and it was interesting as we watched today the president did talk just for a second about the va. >> well, the white house says that the timing of this trip really had nothing to do with the scandal involving veterans administration hiding the wait times at some facilities that vets have to wait for medical care but it did give mr. obama a positive

setting of commander in chief after weeks of negative press. he shook hands of pretty much everyone in a crowd of several thousand. the president has been fending off calls for the va secretary, eric shinseki to resign. the va already spends about $4.8 billion a year for private care for veterans. critics say they could have thought of increasing that a lot sooner than they did. >> thank you very much. now, let's go to california. this time last night it was breaking news on the fox report, a shooting near the university of california at santa barbara. seven people dead, including the gunman. 13 others injured. new tonight, details about the suspect, elliot rodger. he posted disturbing videos on line prior to the shooting yesterday. deputies did not become aware of those until after the rampage

happened the last few days. they described the suspect as someone who was a loaner. he had seen elliot rodger several times in the past few weeks. he tuned out any offers of help. >> i remembered like that statement that he made, and i was just like, but after talking to him for a really long time, he was a really troubled kid. i don't know if i like postponed it for a couple of months, but honestly, he just doesn't -- there's nothing anybody could do. >> along with the six innocent people who died, 13 others were wounded here on friday night, and six of those victims remain hospitalized, harris. >> wow, claudia, just hearing that young person say he was a

really troubled kid. what details are coming to light? >> well, in fact, boxes of evidence were collected a hundred miles from here yesterday from the homes of elliot rodger's parents who were divorced. documents were taken away from his parents home in two suburbs of los angeles. rodger's parents became aware of their son's chilling manifesto on friday afternoon. he had emailed it to them. and they raised up to santa barbara friday night. during that drive, the parents heard news reports about a mass shooting. they called 911 and a short time later their worst fears were confirmed. they are devastated. they may have a statement to

make in the next few days. in the meantime, the makeshift memorialize continue top grow at the various crime scenes. there are ten crime scenes in all, including the building behind me. that is the alpha phi sorority house where two female students were shot and killed friday night. >> ten crime scenes. new hope for peace and unity in ukraine as people there go to the polls to elect a new president and while it is not official yet, one man is already claiming victory. a billionaire candy tie couldn't. they are hoping he can forge an agreement with vladimir putin. he has his work cut out for him, particularly in the eastern part of the country where heavily armed russian separatists

pope francis is making history in the middle east, political and religious leaders in that part of the world are hearing the pope's words on peace and love for humanity. during his meeting with the palestinian president, he urged them both to make sacrifices in the pursuit of peace. the pope spoke out against the mistreatment of children around the globe. he then took his message of brotherhood to tel aviv where he was graetd by prime minister. now we've learned both leaders have accepted his invitation for a meeting.

care at private facilities. they are abused of trying to cook the books, hiding a backlog of patients. steve, what are lawmakers saying on this sunday? >> there's a fairly widespread agreement on both sides of the aisle to allow veterans to take advantage of private hospital care though some wonder why it took so long. it would expand a program already in place. the government spent $5.8 billion last year on veterans health care outside the va system. there's calls for eric shin seki to retire. the president stands behind the secretary. >> i have said secretary

shinseki doesn't need to go. the va already knows that there are 23 veterans who have died because they were on waiting lists. >> miller and other republicans say the va shouldn't have waited so long to let additional patients to get outside care. >> we know that the inspector general is also investigating. some people are saying more needs to be done than that. >> the justice department has to take a look. it has the ability to convene a grand jury and the inspector general does not. >> only the department of justice and the fbi have the resources, the expertise, and the authority to do a prompt and effective criminal investigation of the secret waiting lists, potential destruction of documents, falsification of records. in effect, the cooking of books and covering up that may have occurred. >> at the same time, bloomen

cannot be made for our veterans. give our veterans vouchers. >> pat, i'm going to start with you tonight. >> i think this is -- we talked about last week and it's obvious the problem that the va has been going on for a long time. john can speak to his proposal which goes to some of the things we're hearing now, but vets go to private hospitals but this has been going on for decade after decade, but what really bothers me the most. we have a president who -- i'm very glad he was to afghanistan today, but his basic attitude about the military has been -- now there's been a crisis. i can't help that he went to deflect the criticism because i think it's well deserved for the way this culture in this

administration operates. >> is that on the money with you? >> i hope that pat is being too cynical but i fear that there's probably some truth to it. harris, i think this is one of those situations where it's not a question of rush to judgment. there's a need for action. general shinseki has got to go. we need to adopt a variety of different options to get veterans the care they need immediately. one or the other or all of them have to be put in place and we need top-to-bottom overhaul of the va pure and simple. >> i want to talk to you about these calls for eric shinseki, the va secretary to resign and get your thoughts on that. this is a recent cbs poll. it showed when asked should he resign, 45% of people said yes. 31% of people said no.

a quarter of people said they don't know. i would say arguably they may not even know who he is. >> 40% of the people don't know who the vice president is why would they know who the secretary of veterans affairs is. >> this is now a problem than just the guy who is running the va. this has been going on for 50 years. i've been inundated since last week's show with veterans coming to me with their stories since the mid 60s, the bad care. the three of us, what we do on this show, we try to look at politics in a big picture, and the big picture of this thing is the va scandal is a template for what's wrong with politics in america. okay. the government doesn't give a damn about the people it's supposed to care for. they don't care about these veterans. they use them in the war. they send them eight times to

afghanistan and when they come back, they send them off to some dump and they don't care about them. and they spend $4990 million -- $490 million on curtains, office furniture and conference rooms and that's not just obama spending it. the republican house allocated the money. they have oversight, so they are equally guilty of dumping on our veterans, which is a sin of the worst degree. >> you know what, i want to go back to what president obama, then candidate 2008 said on the stump, and fast-forward to where we are now. let's watch that. >> how can we let this happen? how is it acceptable in the united states of america? the answer it's not. it is an outrage. a betrayal of the ideals that we asked our troops to risk their lives for. but it doesn't have to be this

way. not in this country. not if we decide that this time will be different. there are many aspects of this war that have gone inalterably wrong but caring for our veterans is one thing we can still get right. >> the president started how can we let this happen 2008, it's 2014. that's a really good question. >> it's the same juan we should ask about his transparency and everything else. this is a president who said i know nothing, the sergeant schultz decision as it was with the irs, as it is with every scandal, as it is with benghazi. i don't know. i know nothing about it. the problem is there's a culture in washington that john was alluding to and i was trying to refer to earlier of our government, the government complex, which is everyone in washington is there to serve themselves. we have people in the va getting bonuses for killing people, for god's sake. obama hasn't cared anything about it any more than he has

cared about what happened at the irs or anything else, but the culture here is unbelievable. it is the people serve the government. government is there for us to feather our nests. the va is the worst example, and even my party is upset that can't be upset about all the other scandals. it is about screw the people and the hell with them as john said. the president doesn't care. i'm sorry to be cynical but truthful. >> when you look at all this and you hear about calls for shinseki to resign, there is a growing drum beat that critic say if you let that happen, where will the accountability be? >> if people are literally dying on your watch and there is abuse after abuse as john was saying going back to the 50s, you have to take bold and decisive

action. pat is right, the president and the administration have basically used a we know nothing defense for scandal after scandal, and harris, the key point here is this goes to the lives of those who given the most to our country. this is not, you know, an abstract scandal about what might have happened with conservative groups or many journalists. this goes to what average, every day, hard working, and yes, patriotic american have put up with for much too long and there's got to be accountability and action now. >> on twitter, says i blame them all in washington because the president and congress are too many fighting each other and not doing their job. we had a similar moment if you will in terms of collecting ideas last sunday night. john, you pitched one out. let's watch that and we'll talk about it. >> here is a solution. we are going to abolish the va, harris. get rid of it.

fluff off every scandal and in the bureaucracy a sense of entitlement that is so outrageously i amr immoral. that is the code of washington. here's the point, if they would do this to veterans, what do you think they will do to you and they do do it. >> the other point i wanted to mention during the debate over obamacare, one of the arguments that the administration made was that obamacare was going to be a success like health care for veterans in the va was. well, look at what we've now learned about the quality of the care, and we are headed down that road. we hear people say, ultimately, we're going to have a single-payer plan. >> isn't that interesting. >> single-payer plan is what the veterans have basically. it's a disaster. you have rationing, hiding on the books because you can't get the care to people as they need

hillary clinton's camp reportedly urged them to participate to protect the secretary of state during the republican led probe. our political insiders are with me. doug, what i said at first, i'm going to start with you. >> please. >> is hillary clinton in peril? >> well, i don't know if she's in peril. we'll see given the hearings, but the democratic party and the administration certainly are in per rel and there are a lot of packets that have to come out. i think the democrats made the right decision to participate. the republicans will, i think, have to be fact-based in their inquiry about what happened, what was the secretary of state's role, what was the president's role, the national security advisers's role to just get a timeline to answer questions could military assistance have been rendered. all of these are fair and reasonable questions. i think it is less to protect hillary clinton than it is to

make sure that there is a balance to a fact-finding process. >> really, really. >> for the fast majority of american people. >> hillary clinton said she is satisfied with the gag's findings so far. pat. >> doug is right, the american people are not, and i think there's a real problem here. i look at the democrats who have proven themselves to be super partisan, he's on a committee with darrell issa. we find that he was asking people to be investigated by the irs. all the people they put on look like to me the kinds of republicans who try to defend watergate rather than go after the facts and be judges of the facts. the democrats run a risk. the republicans run the riveng as we have said before by being too political which people expect them to be, but if the democrats -- if facts come out that are undisputable and they

the republican party has a really limited number of new ideas. i know jeb bush to be somebody who is thoughtful, who defies the conventions in his party, is willing to consider out of the box solutions on taxes and spending and budgets, and, look, he does have problems, mostly associated with exhaustion with the family name and obviously his brother's presidency, but this is to the good, and hiem here to say i think he is the strongest potential republican opponent to hillary, notwithstanding the problems the party has and jeb bush has because of his name is history. >> even some democrats have indicated he is somebody to watch for. your thoughts. >> well, i've always had great respect for him and i respect the processes that he's doing this, but i have a fundamental definitional problem here which is as long as jeb bush is willing to be the candidate of
