12:01 pm
that 19-year-old will join us live. so let's get to it. >> now shepherd smith reporting, live from the fox news desk. >> first from the fox news desk on this tuesday afternoon, a raid to save the hundreds of kidnapped girls could end up killing them. that from the nigerian military that claims they now know where the girls are but cannot use force to save them. this heads up quite a fight between nigeria's president that ruled out dealing with the kidnappers. while they clash over tactics, the nearly 300 girls are waiting for rescue, from terrorists who threaten to sell them off as sex slaves. protesters have slammed the nigerian government for not making progress more than a month after the kidnappings happened. yesterday a military officer tried to calm thousands of demonstrators by claiming there's been a break through. >> good news for --
12:02 pm
>> leave us alone, we're working. pentagon officials say they cannot confirm the girls' location, even though american teams spent weeks searching for the girls with drones and other planes. they focused on this known terrorist hide-out. a huge forest eight times the size of the yellow stone national forest. the terror group is not backing down. far from it. just today officials report 54 people are dead after attacks on villages and the military base. and investigators believe the same terror group is responsible. jennifer griffin has the latest for us from the.gone this afternoon. we start out, i'm most curious about whether the timing of the announcement -- help us make sense of all of this. >> the nigerian government is under intense pressure amidst accusations that the military is intecompetence tent and corrupt.
12:03 pm
pentagon officials were caught by surprise. protesters demanding the nigerian government do more. >> we want our girls back. but i tell you, we can do it. so nobody could say the nigerian military doesn't know what we are doing. >> now the government of cameroon, neighboring cameroon, announced it has deployed 1,000 counterterrorism troops to carry out reconnaissance. >> is the state department commenting on any of this, jennifer? >> spokesperson jen sake reiterated what officials have been telling us, which is that they still don't know where the girls are.
12:04 pm
drones are flying over a heavily forested area. >> we have consistently said that locating the girls is the first critical step, and that we're actively working to support the nigerian effort. the nigerian effort to do just that. we don't have independent information from the united states to support these reports you referenced. >> after weeks of being unable to share intelligence with the nigerians, the u.s. now has secure channels to share information but u.s. officials we've spoken to, shep, do not believe the girls are held together all in one place. >> makes it more complicated. jennifer, thanks very much. let's bring in mike barrett now. from the office of event secretary. mike, good to see you. there have been times in the past where when people are kidnapped, can you come up with a way to pay them off one way or another. but you make the argument that if you do that, you will just have to do it again. >> that's right, shep. the difference is a lone wolf, a
12:05 pm
crack pot, a single person, and in that case you want to diffuse the situation and get to the end of the situation. but with terrorist groups, you don't negotiate. with long standing practice, we know, if we do it today, then the next day they'll take another 300 girls, then the next time, another 600. if you make the ransom payment you are encouraging them to take another ship, to take another hostage. >> here are a few things we think we know. we think we know these girls are held in different locations, a very dense forest that is difficult to get in and out of. the nigerians say if we do this, they will all get killed. what do we do? >> well, let's not forget they killed 125 people last week in twin bomb attacks and killed 154 this morning. this group is actively conducting murderous events.
12:06 pm
this group is coming up to the level where the international community needs to help and make sure they he get put back in their place. we want ton against them and do something to put the hurt on them. i would remind viewers that you have the moscow theater in 2003. where when you did a hostage rescue, 15% of the people died. and that's the russians who are much better trained than the nigeri nigerians. then somalia with black hawk down. often you have mission grief. we heard the president talking about afghanistan and how that was mission creep and it had gone 11, 12 years. how far in this war are we willing to go? do we want to dig ourselves into that. >> and that decision has to be somewhere outside this studio. if we were to make a decision to send some specialized forces in to do specific operations, the
12:07 pm
chances that they can get stuck in there and in international dual are not low. >> no. it is actually very likely. that's why, you know, to be honest, what we would do is send advisors. neighbor green berets or navy seals. they would have their forces on the ground. that's how we do these things. again, you are opening up another can of worms. because the more you train, the sort of suspect, highly corrupt, not trust worthy nigerian to train them with weapons. what happens when they turn them on innocent civilians. there is a whole mess of conflicting moral and political and strategic imperatives here. i do think at the end of the day, we can provide enough reconnaissance support to find the girls and that locals can go in and they can free them. that's the best possible outcome. but it is probably coming down to a rescue mission and there will be some loss of life. >> mike bakener washington bp

47-page report. this is essentially a big long spreadsheet with satellite communications on it. the australian agency leading the search provided information on their website explaining how the data was used. these arcs you are seeing, these are based on the time it took for the signal to travel to the plane and back. but even the director of malaysian aviation admits this is confusing. >> i don't understand it. we need experts to look at it. >> some experts and family members complain that the report is missing information that explains exactly how the data was used to come up with the possible flight path. things like algorithms and things like the assumptions used in the report. and they also say it is missing comparable records of other flights that travel along the same flight path as the mitts missing plane. >> the search crews are taking a break now. why are they doing that and what
12:14 pm
are they doing? >> the surface search turned up nothing. and listening for the emergency locator transponder, they only had a few pings. now they will break while they bring in more powerful sonar. this is used to map the sea bed. to try to better understand the depths and terrain there. they could search the 23,000 squire foot mile area they are looking in. >> all right, lea gabrielle, thank you. a standoff and shootout with a s.w.a.t. team in the state of tennessee. authority say they surrounded a motel in knox county, which is basically knoxville, tennessee. a suspect called police and said he was wanted in connection with the triple murder. the fugitive told police he wanted cops to kill him. he said he fired at officers and shot himself. doctors are treating him for the gunshot wound. the suspect was reportedly

12:55 pm
they didn't think i could do it or they thought a 19-year-old with 500 flight hours had no business flying around the world, but i found a few people i was able to convince. >> what about your parents? they just want you out of the house, right? >> i don't know. i think they'll be pretty happy when i get back home, but they're pretty excited about it, too. >> all right. good luck. matt gusmiller, watch for him, he'll be looking for your money and flying around the world. matt, all the best. >> thanks, shep. >> all right. we'll be back. those litt things still get you.
