the week. >> you almost made it there. i am heather childers. >> it is a shoirter week this week on the holidays. the va scandal. today we will hear from va officials on the list of the phoenix facility that led to the death of at least 40 veterans. we are live from washington with what we might learn. >> we may hear some more details today. they will be focusing on the va facility weight list allegations after the request of congressman jeff miller. legislation affairs joe moody as well as michael huff. a number of officials on the hill as well as investigators say they have been on the problems at the va.

they have been on problems and they have been scheduling the issue since 2000. most recently in 2012. there is evidence to support delays in care cannot ee arms in veterans our -- worsening conditions or death. the outcomes may not be as good as if you had detected the condition earlier. it also sent down a fact sheet regarding veteran's access to care. offered services that are specialized to prevent in the areas of mental health spinal cord injuries or other areas unique to healthcare delivery and hard to find out side va. the scrutiny increases. they will meet with senior pentagon officials today.

steven haze from the weekly standard says the troop drawdown is going to back fire. >> with that fru troops on the ground you don't have the kind of infrastructure that allows the troops to do what they need to do to be successful to continue to take the fight to al qaeda, to the afghan taliban. where are we moving our veterans they will be largely confined to cable. that doesn't suggest there's a commitment to success in afghanistan which the president points out laid out in december of 2009. this is an incredibly shortsighted move that this was the good war this was the crucial war. we had to win it. >> in other news happening today aaron hernandez being arraigned on double murder charges.

in houston and louisiana and parts of mississippi. we have been seeing heavy rain moving over the southeast. on top of the rain we are talking about as much as 8 inches potentially even more than that forecast for today and also tomorrow. this will be a big concern across the gulf coast. they are in louisiana and parts of mississippi today. they are looking at potential for large hail strong wind gusts and maybe isolated tornado down there. another area looking at the threat for severe storms today is montana and also north dakota. the tornado had a hit about two-days ago in north dakota producing damage. temperature wise a little cooler today across the northeast. we had a book door cold front. that is like a cold front that goes backwards.

welcome back to "fox & friends first" . the first american jihaddist may have carried out a suicide bombing attack in syria. that american joined the islamic terrorists trying to overthrow the assad regime, al qaeda's official branch in syria. the front reportedly posted a picture of an american on twitter and made the claim saying the american did it in conjunction with attacks by three other bombers. so we'll see. the u.s. meantime could get more involved in the civil war in syria. president obama apparently wants to train rebels. officials telling the associated press that the president may soon sign off on a project to train and equip moderate syrian rebels. the opposition forces have been asking for military
