more of a healthy you. hello. i'm arth hello, time now for "sunday housecall." >> welcome as always every sunday. joining us dr. marc siegel, professional of medicine, author of "the in your pulse, unlocking the secret code of sickness and health. >> dr. ahmadi, chief of robotic surgery. hello. >> i want to start here today. there's a disturbing new report about measles. centers for disease control reveal u.s. has seen more
1:31 pm
measles since eliminated. start with you. >> shows 288 cases already this year. as you said in 2000, there were no naturally occurring changes in the united states at all. the problem is the issue regarding vaccination. arthel, we have about 90% compliance with vaccine here, mmr vaccine. it's a live virus vaccine. has never been associated with autism although fear mongers have gotten into that. this vaccine has helped stamp out measles worldwide. we had 5,000 deaths from measles worldwide back in 2000. 2010 back to 100,000. this vaccine saves lives. measles is a respiratory virus. it's easy to transmit it. you can cough it, sneeze it, transmit it before you have it. that rash you get, you get later on in the game. you don't even know that you've
1:32 pm
transmitted it, because the rash comes later. if we don't vaccinate people, we're going to end up with resurgence. this is about something called clusters. if you have it in one area, you're not going to get it remotely on the other side of the country. here is what happened this year. some amish mercenaries went to the philippines where there's 30,000 cases over the last six months. they hadn't been vaccine mated because they don't believe in it. they brought it back. in ohio we have almost half the cases. i want to ask dr. samadi a question. >> i would like to ask a question. you're talking about getting vaccinated, what if i got vaccinated 30 years ago, should i get vaccinated again. >> that's the big question. if you're not sure whether you got vaccinated or not and you're about to travel to one of those countries, go ahead and get another vaccination. >> what if i'm not going. >> if you have gotten the vaccination, then you're fine. you're okay. the vaccination is recommended
1:33 pm
for children between the age of 12 months to 15 months. the second between the age of four to six years. if you're planning to go to those countries over the age of six months, go ahead and get vaccinations. that's what cdc has recommended. when you think of measles, what comes to mind, the young child. 50% of these measles over the age of 20 years to 65 years old. even adults get this. how do you know you have it, which is what people want to know. runny nose, fever, headache, exactly like the flu, except a couple of days a red rash all over the body and in the mouth, et cetera. i agree with marc. this vaccination is important. 90% of the people who got this didn't get the vaccination. here is the question, you guys have been in the midst of this. is the vaccination safe or not? does it cause autism. there's no scientific data to back that up, to show the risk
1:34 pm
of autism. since they took the mercury out, the rate of autism on the rise. >> to be clear are you talking about mmr. >> it didn't have it. other vaccinations which cause fear because of the mercury issue, they have never been shown to be associated with autism either. in africa 70% vaccination rate with mmr. india. guess what, arthel, there's a ton of measles in those countries. here it's over 90%. what worries me is the vaccination rate is going down. everyone out there has got to get their kid vaccinated before school. >> i think i remember getting the measles in school, polka dot marks all over your face. it hurts. you talk about these missionaries who went over and come back with it. if you had a shot as a kid, is it a lifetime protection? do i have to worry about getting another measle shot.
1:35 pm
>> you don't have to get another measle shot. you have those antibodies and you're covered. what he's bringing up are important, ohio, orange county, california, and new york. those don't believe in vaccinations. i think celebrities are not doing a good job here. jenny mccarthy has become the face of autism and not getting vaccines. they are not doing a favor to some of these people who do not know if they should get one or not. this vaccine is safe. when you talk, arthel, about autism. a lot of environmental talks and other things doing this. so the message to a lot of people is get vaccine, saves lives. one out of 1,000 people can die from this. there's no reason. >> the measles? >> yes. >> i like to say i'm much more afraid of the disease than i am of the vaccine. >> fear is inoperative here. be afraid of the disease. very ininfectious. >> besides the obvious staying
1:36 pm
away from someone with the measles, how do you get it? >> you have to be aware you can actually get the respiratory problems. one thing we didn't say. red eyes. red eyes is characteristic of measles. if you're getting sniffles, headache, fever, and under the circumstances those red eyes you've got to be isolated. to your point, arthel, we don't have a treatment for it. we only have that vaccine. >> you know something, your point is well taken. if you're in preschool and some parents are going to listen to some of the celebrities, you know what, yop to put my kid in danger, your child is at risk. you can't tell them to wear masks or anything like that. this is a preventible one. if you're traveling you should absolutely get the vaccine and it's treatable. >> great advice. ever go to the supermarket, grocery store, restaurant and they say, yes, we have gluten-free pasta. is it a fad or something that's real to be concerned about? coming up here on "sunday housecall," we'll talk about the
