with the white flag on a stick, retro 1770, comes out and hands over bowe bergdahl in full, i guess, rekale i can't of that -- regalia of that region. he walks into a chopper. as you see a closeup of his face, you can see, number one, he's not used to the light or it's the sand. he's having trouble negotiating as he gets on to a plane. >> this is taliban propaganda video from the taliban website. what's curious about this, and when you watch all three minutes of it, is at one point bowe bergdahl is actually seen, it looks like he's kind of laughing or joking around with some of the taliban guys. if you notice, he walked all the way from the pickup truck to the helicopter -- and there you can see it takes off. what's curious about it -- and there he is right there. he's waiting for the blackhawk to show up. what's interesting about this is there's an item in the "wall street journal" today that talks about obviously somebody at the white house was trying to

spin this story, one of the reasons we had to do the taliban trade was because he was essentially about ready to drop dead. >> that's what the administration is saying. >> yeah. today they say there was a video that came out december 2013 which showed his rapid deterioration, is what they were referring to. then you see, much to the white house dismay, you've got the taliban putting this video out that shows he is not about to drop dead, and bowe bergdahl looks okay. >> according to many, the video also showed those that were released from the taliban, those five very high-ranking officials there being released in qatar with the music being played in the background if you watch it in its entirety. >> congress is extremely upset. they are saying why did you bypass us again. the pentagon is saying why did you bypass us. the national intelligence director is saying why did you bypass us. it seems the white house is

doing it on its own where they are apologizing to the senate intelligence committee. dianne feinstein is a little perturbed. it seems the only one that was told is senator harry reid. guess who else nixed it? hillary clinton. >> in 2010 they did find out in an investigation that go bowe bergdahl did willingly walk off base. also, in order to establish him as a deserter, in quotes, they have to establish intent, which it looks like they will do. they will try to get down to the bottom of why he left the base willfully in the first place. >> because right now the military is keeping him out of view, he is at that military hospital in germany. we can't see him, although we just saw him from a couple of days ago. meanwhile, it's interesting, his team leader, bowe bergdahl's team leader was on television yesterday. and it's curious because he was talking about how shortly after bowe bergdahl went missing, a couple of

afghan kids saw an american crawling through the reeds. they saw some guy. i don't know how many americans might have been in that neighborhood, but it was probably this guy. then there was a lot of chatter on the radio where an american was looking for somebody in the taliban who could speak english. that's curious. here's his commander. >> looking for someone who spoke english so he could talk to the taliban. when we heard that, it told us, okay, he's actively seeking out the taliban following his disappearance. i.d. started going directly under the truck. they're getting perfect hits every time. their ambush was very methodical like they knew what we were going to do. obviously there is no way to prove that bergdahl was feeding them that information. at least i cannot do that. when we were attacked he knew exactly how we would react to certain things.

>> martin dempsey, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, said we're going to have a full investigation as soon as he's healthy. i actually think in many ways, whether bergdahl is a traitor or regardless of who he is, and obviously this past warrants a thorough investigation, he is listed as a deserter. the people working with him all seem to conclude that. but you can stay home and think a little bit maybe this is all political spin. the bottom line is i'm worried about the five guys that are back in the fight. we reestablished the war cabinet of the taliban. and is bowe bergdahl's life worth more than the other americans who more than likely will face their demise because of the planning of a war cabinet which once was a sitting evil government that is back intact? >> as we look at this video released a couple of days ago, this is when the five taliban guys got to qatar, that essentially is as strict a security situation as they're going to be in. they're apparently all

living now in a residential compound with their families, and the only requirement is that they stay in the country. remember, we heard the president say, you know, there's a mechanism in place so that we can keep eyes on them. that is baloney. essentially just like the southwest airlines commercial, you are now free to roam around the country, they can go anywhere they want to in qatar. is there going to be trouble? you've got to think there could be. >> most likely. look out for hillary clinton's response in this. if 2014 goes forward, she may have this to bear on her shoulders. who do you believe when it comes to the character of this man? we should get our own back. but at what cost? the families who have sacrificed lives to look for him weigh in on this. those on the ground said we were with him and we know. yet, the state department says we don't have those facts. doesn't matter. >> listen to this. unbelievable. >> according to those

in terms of weather. overnight affecting more than 35 million people, take a look at this incredible picture. that is a super cell that formed over holkum, kansas. and then over in the state of nebraska, some massive hail the size of baseballs pummeling the city of norfolk right there. there was also giant hail in the town of blair, nebraska. it shattered car windows at a dealership. also flooding in other parts of the mid we've. overnight a fan falls nearly 15 feet right into the bull pen at miller park in milwaukee. it happened just before the eighth inning. the twins were playing the brewers last night and then a guy from the dining area above the brewers' bull pen fell there. he didn't move for several minutes but he then regained consciousness. medics rushed him off the field in a stretcher. he is a little shaken up but he will be okay. if you need to phone a friend, don't call angela

welcome back. senator bernie sanders is sponsoring new legislation to revamp the v.a., but some of his past comments are raising eyebrows. >> i'm chairman of the veterans committee. let me tell you some news. the veterans administration provides very high-quality health care. and you have folks out there now, koch brothers and others, who want to radically change the nature of society and even make major cuts in all of these institutions or maybe do away with them entirely. >> eyebrows raised indeed. our next guest is heading to capitol hill to voice his concerns about this scandal and talk about those comments. joining us is the c.e.o. of concerned veterans for america and a fox news contributor pete hegseth. good morning. thanks for being with us today. your goal here is -- the hearing is tomorrow. what is your goal? >> to make sure real

accountability, real reform is what is passed. a scandal happens, people's attention goes elsewhere and then washington goes to work. that is when the forces of the status quo gets to work. they say you don't want to do these major overhauls. let's kind of do it or not really do it. in bernie sanders case, the answer has always been spend more money, spend more money. once again he's proposing another big v.a. spending bill that is going to flood the system as opposeed to change a culture, which is where you hold people accountable for their actions and then give veterans other options. this isn't about dismantling a system. this is about making a system work. thankfully there's real reform legislation and there's fake reform legislation and we're going to call it out. >> right there the comments you heard from him that we just played seem to be political. service members and veterans, apolitical here. they choose to rise above that. i'm noting some political tone there with the attack on the koch brothers and those who want to revamp or change. >> he's imputing the motives of people who want

to change a system that's dysfunctional. there's a lot of people in washington saying we want to revamp the v.a. the way it is. if we spend more and hire more doctors, that is what we've been saying for decades. it is not a funding problem, not a staffing problem. it is a culture problem. there is no transparency and ultimately veterans are stuck in a system that if they need timely care they can't go to a private system as an option. we're saying present that option. these are commonsense things that in washington feel like a big threat to the bureaucracy, big threat to those who spend millions in a system to the detriment of many. >> those fighting for freedom don't have the freedom of choice when it comes to their health. >> choice is a critical aspect of this and senators burr and mccain introduced legislation that would give them the option to go to a private facility

arizona in the headlines this morning. one day after jan brewer, the governor, sent a letter to president obama complaining about dozens of undocumented immigrants being busted in phoenix, another bus load of immigrants arrived. homeland security says it's happening because there isn't enough manpower to process them all. cesar chavez for congress? arizona congressional candidate scots fitzler changed his party from republican to democrat and then changed his name to cesar chavez. take that. >> meanwhile, imagine being on a flight and hearing these words "does anybody know how to fly this plane?" that is essentially what air force captain mark gungle heard over a speaker on a united flight a couple of months back. the pilot behind the wheel of the 737 apparently suffered some sort of heart

attack 30,000 feet in the air. nurses who happened to be on board tended to the pilot while gongel rushed to help the first officer land at omaha airport. joining us is the air force captain joining us from cleveland. good morning to you, sir. >> good morning. thanks for having me. >> what a story. you and your wife and your family are sitting in coach and you hear somebody say is there a doctor? is there a nurse? then somebody said, hey, does anybody know how to fly the plane? what was going through your head? >> steve, it was interesting to say the least. three quick calls for medical help over the p.a., and we of course felt the airplane slowing down and turning and so we knew we weren't going to denver. then i heard the call and i figured out right away that meant the pilot was the patient. i looked at my wife briefly for a second and she looked at me both having this are

we hearing this kind of moment to go. she said i think you better ring the call button. i rang the call button and made my way to the front. >> your wife said please help land the plane. you get into the cockpit and there is the copilot tending to things. she doesn't know you from adam. did she go through some quick interview process for the job? >> there was about a five-second interview. she said who are you? i said i'm a pilot. i was trying to be to the point. she said what do you fly? i said i'm an air force guy. i flew b-1's. she said have a seat. we are going to omaha. i need you to back me up on the checklist and work the radios. >> we got a picker of the lancer, the b-1 bomber you have flown in the past. that doesn't look anything like a 737. >> it doesn't but i'll tell you that once you get in airplanes, an airplane is an airplane. the controls are pretty

intuitive. things are laid out pretty well. it is not difficult to tell what's what or what you need to do. it's just like going from driving a small sedan to driving a pickup truck. the steering wheel is still a steering wheel. a throttle still a throttle. >> you were backing up the copilot. was the copilot pleatly sure about what -- completely sure about what she was to do? >> she is an absolute professional. to be clear, she did all the flying. i was only on the radios and i was only backing her up on the checklist, but she did all the flying and she kept her cool and absolutely horrific thing she must have seen to see the captain go through what he went there. she made a lot of very, very good quick decisions in a very short order of

time. the decision to turn the plane around and get to the nearest suitable airport, she couldn't have done a better job. >> you've given her credit. did the passengers on board, once they realized, wait a minute, we're landing and that guy from 23-b just helped up there. did they give you a round of applause or anything? >> after we landed and we got the captain off the airplane, we got him directly to the ambulance on the ramp, and there was some applause initially after that for the nurses. and after i went back to my seat shortly thereafter, after the emergency itself was over, we got towed to the gate. there was some scattered applause and high fives. i think a lot of people were still looking at the nurses and that's fine. >> doing the math. i hope united airlines is going to let you fly for free at least this year? >> they did offer everyone on board the equivalent of about one free air fare for a one round-trip ticket in

base? >> well, he's off base by not understanding the statistics. about 1% of the general population serves in the military, and those who do take the jrotc program that statistic increases to 10%. that still means 90% of the students who take jrotc do not enter the military. >> all for free, the military pays for it and it puts these kids who volunteer to do it, it is an elective program, through the paces. it provides some discipline and gives them an idea that perhaps they want to go into a military lifestyle. no obligation? >> exactly. that's right. it is an elective. >> what do kids get out of it? >> they get out of it a number of things. one is the purpose of jrotc is to motivate young men and women to become better citizens. and we do that through

teaching them things like leadership, communication, citizenship, patriotism, community service. the school i teach at has over 1,200 cumulative hours of community service. >> unbelievable. here's what one student that goes to francis lewis high school said. he says this, quote, jrotc has nothing to do with war. we are being trained to be the leaders of tomorrow. he goes on. but that's the gist of what he said about what he's experiencing. however, i want to take it one step further. what is wrong if you want to join the military? what is wrong with getting a taste of this lifestyle and saying i want to go for an academy, or after i graduate or instead of graduating going into the military. it is a volunteer force. >> yes, sir, couldn't agree with you more. and there are people who go in to senior rotc and not take the program. but it gives you a taste of

what the intent was behind that will soon be decided once he recovers in germany. they will get a chance to interview and investigate further. his team leader also said that there was an intercepted radio chatter that had a voice saying that -- indicating that bergdahl may have been seeking talks with the taliban. >> that's right. right after that, then suddenly there is an alarming number of ied attacks after he disappeared directly under trucks, perfect hits every time. possibly a coincidence, but many in the military worry that bergdahl was actually giving information to the bad guys. he was working with the enemy. >> he left his stuff behind. he left a note behind evidently he had written to his parents prior. there is a lot of evidence that he was a deserter. until they can decide his intent, they can not list him as a deserter. >> in 2012, this is the e-mail that he sent to his parents. >> this is in michael hastings' article in the rolling stone.

to be confirm whether or not officially he is a deserter, though many from his own platoon do feel that is the case. his team leader noted with recent update that there was intercepted radio chatter saying that bergdahl actually sought talks with the taliban. >> yeah. he was looking for somebody in the taliban who could speak english and shortly after he went missing, an alarming number of ied attacks, after he disappeared directly under trucks, perfect hits every time. possible that it was a coincidence, but there is worry that bergdahl was collaborating with the enemy. >> in terms of communication, it has never been worse between the administration and congress. in fact, democrats who control the senate, chairman of the intelligence committee, senator feinstein was not even told about this swap that it was imminent. there was talk this could happen. congress said bad idea. we can't support it, including the former secretary of defense

>> what are i your thoughts? when did you first meet him? >> back in 2008 at fort richardson. >> that was in alaska? >> yes, sir. >> and what was it like? what's he like? >> very much to himself and kept to himself and didn't really hang out with too many other people. >> so you get deployed into afghanistan and your thoughts about the day he left or the day he went missing and what you did after. >> can you repeat that? my thoughts on that? >> yeah. can you bring us back to that time? >> yeah. i was in the 509th and he was in the 051st and he was at a different outpost than i was. but the sentiment that everybody knew was that he walked off the base in the middle of the night, left all of his gear there and went -- just walked off the post. so we had all known that it

was -- that he had deserted his post and there was never anything about him getting captured or a p.o.w. until a little while later whenever it came down from the chain of command that we needed to keep quiet about it, not say anything and that we're going with the narrative that he was captured. >> wow. so they basically told you not to tell the truth? >> yes, sir. >> wow. and then we understand, according to one report, that attacks picked up right after he disappeared, were remarkably accurate on the base. did you actually experience the same thing? >> yes,yes, sir. and that was one of the tell tale signs for me is that whenever he went and walked off the base, only stuff that we know that we train for, that the spots that we know on vehicles, how our movements are and stuff like that, they were getting hit very precisely and the ambushes
