some people are saying the stockholm syndrome. is he becoming enamored with his captors and wanting to become more like them or is he simply trying to survive? is he conspiring or is this his way of trying to make sure he stayed alive. >> did he play along with them so they wouldn't torture him in some capacity? >> all good questions. it will be interesting if we ever get to actually see him. we did hear something from the hospital earlier today and apparently he is showing signs of improvement. he's stable, he's talking but they can't release any information about him because of patient privacy. charles krauthammer yesterday said why haven't we seen him yet? he's suggesting there's a possibility, could there be some witness tampering going on here? are they saying, now, mr. bergdahl, if you say you deserted and you just walked off, you know you could wind up in leavenworth forever and you would embarrass the administration as well and we won't pay for your disability and you will be

shamed. however, if you come up with another story, who knows. >> of course one of the reasons president obama said he had to do this unilaterally and not consult with congress and keep them in the dark, which lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have been upset about, was because he had a real health concern. but judging from the video, you can't tell somebody's medical condition by seeing photographs or moving pictures of him, he seems to be malnourished, but anything else -- we are awaiting results of how he's doing from this german hospital. >> these questions continue to follow the president as he is traveling internationally. what is the president's reaction after making such a public celebration with bowe bergdahl's parents in the rose garden. ed henry is traveling with the president in france. ed, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, guys. the bottom line is the president has been dogged by this firestorm back home throughout this european tour. every stop of the way he's either been asked about it at a must conference or his aides have been behind the

scenes scrambling to push back on the story. yesterday at the news conference he made it very clear that he makes no apologies for what he did. he said in his defense that bowe bergdahl's health was deteriorating. the president as commander in chief saw an opportunity to go in and save him, and he said that's what he did. he also saw a shift, i think, in the white house strategy over the last 24 to 48 hours. white house aides telling "politico," kind of dismissing this story saying it is just obama haters that are stirring it up and then the president saying this at a news conference. listen. >> i'm never surprised by controversies that are whipped up in washington. that's par for the course. but i'll repeat what i said two days ago. we have a basic principle. we do not leave anybody wearing the american uniform behind. >> whipped up controversy. you can see he was sort of

suggesting that this was another one of what he's called before a phony scandal. but what's interesting is that unlike the i.r.s., benghazi, stories like that that have really been pushed along partisan lines, you've seen real division, we've now seen two straight stories -- the v.a. scandal and now this one with bowe bergdahl -- where there hasn't just been republican outrage, there's been democratic outrage as well. in the bergdahl case, you've seen die kwraoeupb feinstein, head of the senate intelligence committee as a democrat said she should have been in on the story, number one and number two the white house broke the law by not notifying her. >> the white house changed their story. they said in the beginning we didn't notify you because we saw the video and he was about to drop dead. then we saw the islamic propaganda video and he looked okay and they said we were afraid they were going to kill him. they do keep changing the

story. and if today's story doesn't work out, look for another one tomorrow. >> the white house still maintains his health was in jeopardy, though, i should point out. but we should also report that the video, the first video -- there's two different videos, the one you referred to which is the taliban video from when he was transferred. but the other video the white house was showing behind the scenes to senators in both parties to show his health was deteriorating was from when? it was from january, six months ago. we don't know, did his health get worse since january or did it stay the same? but they're using a video that is six months old so that is curious as well. >> today is one of the most important days in world history. today is the 70th anniversary of the d-day celebration. what is the president doing there? >> he gave remarks about the legacy of the greatest generation. it gives me chills to be standing here. i'm at the normandy american cemetery. there are over 9,000

americans buried behind me. the cliff just right there overlooking omaha beach where there were the most cash talts of all. what the president tried to do in his remarks is to connect the greatest generation to the 9/11 generation saying there's a lot of young people coming up now who are sacrificing just as much as the greatest generation, important to note. i'll give you one factoid to give you an idea of the magnitude of the sacrifice here 70 years ago on d-day. on 33 different occasions there are brothers buried side by side behind me, where brothers serving together, liberating europe and saving our way of life died here together behind me. it gives you an idea of the scope of the sacrifice. >> it does indeed. ed henry reporting from normandy, france, on this friday morning, d-day morning 70 years later. hallowed ground. thank you very much. >> five minutes after the hour. we have breaking news

morning. near the town of otwell, as many as 20 train cars blown off the tracks. two people were killed by falling trees. a spectacular find in greenland. brand-new images show a cold war spy plane frozen in time. yeah, the plane, it was named hebert crashed during a top secret mission to the north pole. it made an emergency landing on a frozen lake after running out of fuel. the 11 crew members waited three days to be rescued and more than 50 years later the plane was spotted by a nasa aircraft surveying the glacier. isn't that remarkable? >> according to al gore, we shouldn't be able to see that. >> exactly. i wonder whaep has to say about that -- i wonder what he has to say about that. we should ask him. 11 minutes after the hour this friday morning. check this out, this video that's hard to believe. >> look at that.

the state of georgia is the latest to have the federal government warn against a new bill that requires drug tests for some food stamp recipients if there is a suspicion of drug use. >> with nearly 46.2 million people on the government handout, isn't some check necessary to curb against the abuse? >> here to weigh in is the coast of varney and company -- is the host of

varney and company, stuart varney. obviously the concern is you can't punish the kids for the parents doing something dumb; right? instead they have an answer for that. that is another adult can get the assistance and help the kids instead. >> don't you think that if you want something from the government, if you want free food, shouldn't you give up a little of your privacy and be drug tested? look at it the other way around, shouldn't taxpayers be able to say quit this destructive behavior, otherwise you don't get free food. >> other states tried this and they failed at it. >> in florida and utah legislation was passed you have to have a drug test before you can pick up welfare benefits. when that was in place, in force in july, 1,600 people decided to drop out of it. they didn't want to take the test. they didn't want to find out they had been taking drugs. in a sense it worked. it is the courts that reversed it by saying that

is an unconstitutional search. you're not allowed to search people by demanding a drug test in turn for free food. >> over the last five years the amount of people receiving food stamp -ps has never been higher. it is an unbelievable level. do you feel it has become so easy people who should not be getting food stamps are? >> i feel the obama administration has pushed food stamps, pushed it on to people. they advertise come on in and get it. you need it, we've got it. >> people who don't need it, it's out there, we're paying pore it. >> it's buying votes. how else do you explain 46 million people right now, more than 46 million are receiving food stamps five years into a so-called economic recovery. he's buying votes. >> the argument is this is unconstitutional. you can't force people to get these drug tests. yet states passed legislation to allow the freest of marijuana.

overnight an american tourist captured in north korea. the country's official news agency says the american is being detained because he committed acts inconsistent with a tourist visit. this is the third american currently held in north korea. former first lady nancy reagan remembering president ronald reagan on the tenth anniversary of his death. she visited his grave in simi valley, california. the 92-year-old says she still feels her husband's presence and finds him in her dreams. they were married 52 years. >> halfway between china and san francisco our next guest, a british sailor, participating in an around the world race that is still going on, was knocked off the yacht. >> panic struck his crew mates as they frantically searched for him.

[inaudible] >> andrew taylor floated alone in the cold, rough north pacific for an hour and a half. >> he joins us now with his incredible survival story. good morning, andrew. paint the picture for us. what were the conditions like. explain how you went overboard. >> we had, came to 12-meter swells. wind was gusting 50, 60. we were getting pretty wet. waves were crashing over the book. as we were working on the bow i was helping make a sail change. we were working closely together. the boat was kind of doing this and at some point one minute i'm on the boat, next minute i'm in the water. there was nothing in between. >> the video we're looking at here is of the recovery an hour and 40 minutes after you had fallen overboard. when you fell overboard there is an elaborate system where they are able to mark exactly where you

went. they turned around and came back and you weren't there. where were you? >> they go back to where i had gone in and i wasn't there. they thought i was drifting on a one or one and a half knot current so they started a search pattern. i was drifting farther away, i was a mile away by the time they got back to the mark. >> you were starting to be pelted with hailstones. what's going through your mind at this point. >> at the first point i was thinking i need to get myself ready for recovery, look after myself and make sure everything is working, check my life jacket and check my suit and make sure i'm kind of okay and wait for the boat to come back. once the storm hit and sea conditions changed, things changed for me and it was about survival and about trying to preserve myself as long as i could. >> luckily you were wearing a dry suit. the conditions, in addition to the fact you're in the middle of an ocean storm

it's 9 degrees above zero. because the swells are so high, after it was 100 meters or so they couldn't see you. >> i was gone -- >> how did they find you? >> after quite a bit of time in the water, i got a -- >> slow jack. .i turned it on when i went in the water. at some point i turned it off and when i turned it back on it registered straight away with a satellite which transmitted my position to the boat so they knew exactly where i was. >> i guess this world yacht race is 40,000 miles and takes 11 months to complete. something you're going to do again? >> yeah. a trip around the world yacht race is an incredible experience. i've been on the boat since june. we get back home on the 12th of july. i get to see my family again. i haven't seen my parents or daughter for over a year now. it's an amazing experience. i will definitely sail around the world again. whether i do it this way,

horse would win -- a california-bred horse would win that triple crown. 12 horses tried to get all three titles. this is a longer track as well. it is a mile and a half. this is what it comes down to. i think this horse has a great chance. we were talking about the nasal strips. he wears a nasal strip to help him breathe. the other thing i think is worth mentioning is this horse is really chill. he kind of takes in his surroundings and he can nap anywhere. a lot of these horses can't nap in different surroundings. this horse can nap in his stable without any help. he doesn't need chickens, dogs or goats. he is well rested, he can breathe right. and we are hoping for a triple crown this weekend. he wears green socks and the jockey wears a red hat. we'll be watching for him. while we wait for california chrome to take his lap let's look at the temperatures. it's going to be a

wake up. let's get moving and grooving. 42 minutes after the hour. some headlines. this is real. a baby bear shot with a tranquilizeer after spending hours in a tree in new jersey. >> oh my god! >> the bear is okay. he will be released back into the wild. now for the fake. a vet shoots a tranquilizeer at a gorilla. one problem, it wasn't a gorilla. it was a man in a monkey suit. it happened at a zoo in spain. the zoo was holding a drill to make sure they had a plan in place to make sure one of the gorillas escaped but the vet didn't know about the drill and shot the man in the suit. the dart was meant for a 400-pound gorilla. the man said to be doing

okay this morning thankfully. >> a shogt -- shocking account about what bowe bergdahl was up to while being held by the taliban. new documents show he declared himself a warrior for islam even taking place in ak-47 target practice with his captors and playing soccer with him. we have reaction from our washington bureau. good morning. >> if they go the route of court-martial and charge bowe bergdahl what would be the next step? >> they could bring charges against him on a number of things. the first would be abandonment, putting fellow soldiers in danger through his conduct. i think now they're in position where they're trying to gather the facts, gather intelligence, find out what happened and how he came to become in the taliban's custody. these are things that

should have been looked at long before this prisoner swap but it's on the table now. disturbing questions are emerging. >> what sort of offenses would he be charged with if they find him guilty. some are saying he served five years with the taliban. that is enough punishment. what do you say? >> i think it fends on the facts -- it depends on the facts. if it turns out he knowingly deserted his post, that is a serious offense. as a prosecutor, i think i would charge that. if there is no dereliction of duty you could take into account in a sense he already served time in the taliban's custody. i think it is a difficult question. at this point i'm not sure we got the full facts from the administration. now we're starting to hear the truth start is to leak out from people who served with him or who have other inside information as to what happened that night. >> weren't there multiple investigations already conducted on him as to why he may have deserted or not

deserted? and wouldn't it be possible we have this information any way? >> it is possible we have it. the administration has not exactly been forthcoming with the facts. i think the facts as they originally posited them was this guy was going to be a returning war hero, be showered with garlands and the like. it turns out reality doesn't quite match that picture. he doesn't appear to be a war hero and there have been serious questions raised about what was going on. >> how difficult is it to prove that he was a deserter or he was somehow aligned with them? i mean, none of us have been in this position before, but imagine trying to survive under these conditions, to try to pretend to be friends with them. are those some of the questions on the table at this hour? >> i would imagine so. there is no question that at least in some of these situations we've learned there is the so-called stockholm syndrome where people forge an affinity with their captors either because that's the way the human mind works or they think it is the best way to get released. he was in custody for a

long time, and i suspect we have intelligence assets over there who can give us insight into exactly what was going on, whether or not this apparent conversion was legitimate, whether it was a ploy. obviously they can question him now. they can talk with people who knew him before. they can talk with people who might have interacted with him during his five years in custody and try to piece this mosaic together so we can get a better picture of exactly what happened and whether charges would be appropriate. >> and whether or not he would receive p.o.w. pay, which -- how much is that actually per year for somebody who has been a p.o.w.? and is he entitled to that? >> it can be very significant and it can extend long into the future. as to whether he's entitled to it, continuing depends on all the things we're talking about, about the circumstances that caused him to be apprehended by the taliban and whether or not we want to forgive anything that happened or whether we apply the law to him. >> the senate majority leader harry reid this week saying this just affirms another reason why

guantanamo bay is a mess and why we should close the thing. the president has campaigned to close guantanamo bay. do you think we're one step closer to having that become a reality? >> well, he's starting to empty it out. i don't think this is quite the right way to do it. the problem for the president honestly is that he came into office saying we're going to close guantanamo, it's going to be gone by the time my administtion leaves. and now we're about two-plus years away from that point in time and there are still approximately 150 people or more who are detained in guantanamo. i don't think the closure of guantanamo is going to happen any time soon. the president is clearly trying to whittle down the numbers. i think he's doing it in the wrong way. i think that the five people who are being released in exchange for bergdahl are extremely dangerous individuals and i don't think we have sufficient guarantees that these individuals who are not exotic fun you'd like to bring to a cocktail party -- these are hardened terrorists -- they should not be released and we don't have ease of assuring

the rose garden over the weekend, someone unexpectedly because they happened to still be in washington, d.c. when he got the news, the president did, that the transfer had happened and the president felt like look, these are parents who hadn't seen their son in five years. it's time to let them celebrate a little bit. obviously the story has turned on the white house a bit because that celebration has now given way to a lot of questions about exactly how this came together, whether the price was too high in terms of swapping five taliban commanders. but the bottom line is what you were referring to with the president yesterday at this news conference saying look, this is just a controversy whipped up in washington. some of the president's aides telling politico this is just obama haters piling on and getting all riled up. the fact of the matter is, when you have democrats like diane feinstein saying the law may have been broken, the congress should have been in the loop on this and she's the chair of the senate intelligence committee. not only a democrat, but someone with real weight on capitol hill, that suggests this is not

around, well, it wasn't about his health. it was more about we were worried he was going to be murdered by his captors. >> yeah. now it's also -- this really has ticked off congress -- the idea that if the story leaked, the negotiations leaked, that then they were going to kill bergdahl. as members of the intelligence committee rightly said, look, you told us about the bin laden raid months before that happened and we didn't leak that. so don't act like you can't trust us. i think the white house would have been much better advised to say look, under article 2 of the constitution, the president has the power to do this. we said so in a signs statement. this is an effort by us to protect and to get somebody off the battlefield of the we have the right to do that as commander in chief and we're going to do that. >> the president taking an opportunity in brussels yesterday to dig in his heels and double down and say, i offer no apologies. listen. >> i'm never surprised by controversies that are whipped

up in washington. that's par for the course. but i'll repeat what i said two days ago, we have a basic principle. we do not leave anybody wearing the american uniform behind. >> with the controversy, nice rhetoric. phony scandal. this coming out with bergdahl after the v.a. scandal has happened. that's two where folks not just republicans, but democrats have been very critical of the president. how is that affecting him? >> you're exactly right. he can't make that stick, the idea that this is a phony scandal or whipped up in washington because there are too many people on all sides of the political spectrum, both on the issue of bergdahl, the circumstances under which he left, questions now about his involvement with the taliban, the trade. there are too many questions here, the lack of notification, too many questions here to say

this is just being whipped up as a controversy. there are legitimate questions on all sides of this. i'm surprised the president said i'm going to make no apologies. he can't now say, well, i shouldn't have done it. but to say that this is whipped up and i agree with you, you immediately think phony scandals, you know, you can sometimes make that argument. you can't even begin to make it in this case. >> i'm curious to get your take because hillary clinton's new book, which is out next week, releasing quotes ahead of time. here is a quote from her new book. she's sort of preparing the american people for what sort of hard choices she thought she had to make. she said, i acknowledged, as i had many times, that opening the door to negotiations with the taliban would be hard to swallow for many americans after so many years of war. what do you make of them getting this quote out there? >> well, clearly, and she couldn't have known that the bergdahl swap was going to happen 'cause i know how books are written and this must have been in print months ago.
