that's our show for this week. this is mike huckabee from new york god evening and god bless. stay tuned for "justice with judge jeanine." >> tonight new poll out from the decision to release 5 terror leaders in exchange for bowe bergdahl an american held hostage by the taliban. some senior officials in the u.s. military advised against the swap telling the president this was against the deal. i am megyn kelly. >> jim engel spoke with senior for another in the series of ugly revelations about the prisoner trade the president made a week ago. the source saying that the president was told this deal would be quote handing over some four star generals of the taliban in exchange for a soldier who appears to have walked off base oftn his own an
6:01 pm
perhaps worse, although he will be investigated. the source said many in the military call bergdahl a traitor a term they didn't choose lightly. we asked whether this was a good deal. we were with six members of bergdahl's platoon yesterday. you will hear their moments. first to a man with deep contact and a long history in the pentagon. the general is a retired four star general chief of staff in the u.s. army and fox news military analyst. good to see you tonight. let me start with sergeant bergdahl. there were reports today that were connected to james rosen's reporting that he may have converted to islam, declared himself as a warrior of islam trained on ak-47's with the enemy. he did try to escape not just once but twice reportedly. given your history in the army
6:02 pm
what does that tell you? >> first of all, the sources that james rosen had was a private contractor working for the government and one that has a very good reputation that provided that kind of information, collaboration with the enemy and also escaping multiple times. what the military does is they try to confirm those sources as well as the cia that what we do know for a fact because of confirmation from multiple sources that bergdahl did in fact escape and obviously was recaptu recaptured. what we don't know is we haven't been able to confirm how many times he escaped other than that one time and how many times he attempted. we have not been able to confirm the collaboration aspect of it. that's where we stand. i suspect we may not get much more information. this much is going to happen, megan, when he gets into the hands and he's ready for it after this decompression he is going through in the hands of very experienced highly skilled

interrogators who can earn his trust, i mean generally earn his trust and then unburden the guilt that he has and work with him even if he is an islamic ji addist, i am convinced at the end of that which may takes days or a couple of weeks, we will actually know the full story on sergeant bergdahl. >> if he did in fact do those things that james rosen is reporting did he violate the code of conduct in the military? oo first of all violated the oath and code of conduct, and secondly if he seeks favor from the enemy that's a violation of code of conduct which governs our behavior in captivity. if he collaborates with an enemy this is a violation of the code of conduct. however, if he tries to escape, actually escape that's upheld with code of conduct and that is a courageous act which should be

respected. oo a oo it is a very tricky situation. i want to get to the guys who were released. even our former defense secretary leon panetta was against this not to release these soldiers these taliban soldiers given the ongoing war and i assumeled it would never happen. >> well, that doesn't surprise me. i have been around leon panetta for a number of years. he's an abc slults straight shooter. here's the issue. general mcchrystal and general petraeus and general alston and general allen have all made recommendations to this administration on war policy issues in iraq and afghanistan. the president has rejected summarily every single one of them during the residual forces, et cetera. it doesn't surprise me on an
6:05 pm
issue as essential as this is those who posted a fight made a recommendation we should not make this trade and provided the rationale for it. that was ignored and rejected as has all of their other recommendations over the past four to five years. >> general, thank you for being here. >> it is an under statement to say the administration has taken a lot of heat on this deal. a lot of that has fallen on national security advisor susan rice. after she decided to go on the shows this time suggesting bergdahl served the military with quote honor and distinction. then she was given the opportunity to walk that back. here's what she did instead. >> i realize there's been a lot of discussion and controversy around this, but what i was referring to is the fact that this was a young man who volunteered to serve his country in uniform at a time of war. that is in itself a very
6:06 pm
honorable thing. >> when we spoke last night to some of the soldiers who served with sergeant bergdahl they had a different take of his service. >> he is not a hero. he didn't serve with distinction. that is a spit in the face of any one in the army and any one who died for him. >> i don't know how he felt about us but we would all die for him and he left. >> raise your hand if you think he deserted? raise your hand if you have some question about whether he deserted. wow. >> charles kraut ma'amer fox news contributor author of new york times number one best seller "things that matter." a perfect father's day gift by the way. he had the opportunity within days of making that statement to walk it back, she choose option d. >> the oldest rule in politics is when you are in a hole stop

digging. the fact that he put on a uniform doesn't distinguish him from any one else in the military. what distinguishes him would make him end up in captivity s created the whole problem he ended up with the release of the five taliban leaders is the fact that he took off the uniform. that is the reason we are here. the first thing is, it is inconceivable she would have said it in the first place. no explanation. once you say it, you say i misspoke, i was thinking of him joining but there is a question about his alleged de certification. there is something about susan rice. she really ought to stay in bed. >> it is interesting to listen to you. i know you said that you believe, you might have made this deal to get an american
6:08 pm
soldier home and have a trial. but you have had real directions of the way the president has handled it. how could they have done it in the way that they could have done it in this way? >> you could have said we understand how high the price was. we are not going to understand the guys released there's any real prevention of their activities. of course they are going to return. of course they are going to rejoin the fight. we know about the check the history of the man that is being released. you simply level the american people. you say this is a terribly different choice. it is the one where we understand and respect other americans who made the contrary choice. instead of the president arrogantly and narcissistic cliching yes, they are chipped
6:09 pm
up as if there is no arguments on the other side as if all of the democrats who are upset about this are making it up. what the president said this is a some der day a terrible decision it is a deal i do with great reluctance rather than spiking the football having the rose garden ceremony. i believe the president actually thought this is a victory. susan rice, to go back to susan rice, actually said that this is an extraordinary day for america. it is a somber and dark day. this is a defeat nfor the unite states. yes if i had been the commander-in-chief i would have made the same choice. but with great reluctance. the fact that the president can't see that, the fact that he thinks everybody is' posing him
6:10 pm
presumably is as a political motive is simply shocking. it tells you that he doesn't understand the gravity or the nature of what he has done. >> charles krauthammer good to see you. thank you for being here. >> as we sat down for our exclusive they talked about his service and capture and the feeling that bergdahl quote left him behind. left behind what they said last night about the administration their attacks on the motive and up next for the very first time the platoon answered the question was this a good deal? >> i think after this happened we have all said if that was me you could leave me there because i signed on the line to dine for my country. urce of fiber to help support regularity. urce of fiber

6:14 pm
>> perhaps the most important question, regardless of what you feel about bergdahl do you believe the prisoner swap was worth it? do you agree with the prisoner swap? raise your hand if you do. not one of you supports it. why not? >> those are very bad people. they are not an office clerk. just because they go away for a while they are not going to stop what they are doing. they continue to do it and they will always continue to do what they do. >> it will only be harder now do you think they are going to be they let us free but they held us prisoner. >> presidethe president remind are an american soldier and left us behind. >> within a year they are going to be back in afghanistan essentially destroying everything we worked and the whole mill stair rehas worked to
