tv Outnumbered FOX News June 10, 2014 9:00am-10:01am PDT
9:00 am
jenna: we'll keep you posted on breaking news out of oregon. in the meantime, see you back here in an hour. >> "outnumbered" starts right now. see you in an hour. >> and this is a fox news alert. we are picking up the coverage for just a moment here to check in on this breaking news coming from oregon. kptv, our fox affiliate there, is reporting police are responding to reports of an active shooter at republican -- reynolds high school in troutdale, oregon. that's a suburb as we understand. they're asking people, please stay away so they can keep the scene secure and safe. we just have learned that the wife of the vice principal at the school said she received a text message from her husband that said that there is an active shooter.
9:01 am
again, that school is on lockdown. they brought in very heavy equipment, s.w.a.t. steams -- teams. that's always an indication this is a volatile place, at least potentially, and they're moving this very quickly through the scene. this is not something that they senior to be a sitdown. they are actively searching for someone. this is a suburb of portland, oregon. we'll watch the situation, reynolds high school and as news developd, we'll bring it to you. stay with us. >> this is "outnumbered." today's hashtag one lucky guy, dr. keith and he's outnumbered. perfect to have you here with us today. >> i feel perfect sitting here. >> yes. i'll bet you do. >> it's slightly overwhelming, actually. but in a good way.
9:02 am
in a good way. just a rainbow of color and energy. >> it's like being in a happy crayola box or something. >> or something. >> normal or is this not? >> for me it is just another day. very normal sitting with four bright, beautiful fox celebrities. >> who are chomping at the bit to challenge you on every detail of what you know. >> can't wait. >> we have another woman to add to the mix. hillary clinton's media blitz in full swing with today's release of "hard choices" her book on her time as secretary of state and kicking off what seems to be an endless stream of around the clock media interviews, she speaks about benghazi in an exclusive interview with diane sawyer. she was pressed on her handling of the terror attack that took the lives of four americans. asked if all the fire she's been taking from republicans on benghazi might lead her to sit out 2016. here is how clinton responded.
9:03 am
>> another reason not to run? >> no. >> just too much? >> actually, it's more of a reason to run because i do not believe our great country should be playing minor league ball. we ought to be in the majors. and i view this as really apart from even a diversion from the hard work that congress should be doing about the problems facing our country and the world. >> welcome to the program. it's gret to have you. >> good to be here with you. >> we were talking about this last night over dinner and this is a woman who is very powerful. a lot of people admire her on both side but it hasn't been something that's been problem-free. she's had a number of issues with her personal life, with her political choices, with her time under the obama administration. >> this is what we were saying last night. in order to play in the majors, you have to be able to answer the questions. she's not answering the questions. four americans are dead, their parents don't know how their sons were killed. we don't know exactly what
9:04 am
happened and she wants to run for president. then answer the questions. the accountability review board never interviewed her, never interviewed the president and never interviewed susan rice. i think the american people should put their feet down. >> hard choices are what the americans have to do in terms of election in 2016. >> she's got to be very careful on this book tour because this is going to give lens and her democratic opponents in her primary lots of ammunition to use against her in campaign ads. her saying we should be playing major league ball. that's a campaign ad waiting to happen, especially when it comes to how she handle the benghazi, whether it's her statements in front of congress, whether it's just details of her not answering the questions or whether it's her continuing to act like this isn't a big deal when the american people, independents, democrats and republicans, all say they don't have enough answers to the questions yet and she should be
9:05 am
answering those questions. she has to be very careful how she handles this book tour and what she says >> we're seeing a picture there on the screen when hillary clinton was testifying, the remarks, the body language, the whole thing. many people found it off putting. in this interview, did she do herself any advantage? >> i don't see the advantage here. people died. this was a mismanaged situation and to simply stomp your feet and say, well, what difference does it make is just, to me, sort of drama at the expense of reason. here's the question i have. what qualifications -- this was not a distinguished senate life she had particularly. she didn't particularly distinguish herself as secretary of state so other than being the wife of the president, why is she running? are we so heck bent on getting a woman elected president that we'll fall over ourselves to do it despite an undistinguished
9:06 am
record? >> that's the question, she wants to use the terms like playing major league ball, what major league position was she in at the state department? she blew it. it's not just benghazi. look at her entire record and even her spokesperson can't name one thing she's done the right way. >> i don't think she would have had a chance to be secretary of state if her husband wasn't the president of the united states. >> diane sawyer also pressing mrs. clinton on her remarks. we mentioned about benghazi at a congress jam hearing in the months after the terror attack. remember this? >> the fact is, we had four dead americans. was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided they would go kill some american snz what difference at this point does it make? >> now listen to the former secretary, when asked if she would like to take back those words, what difference does it make? >> does it make a difference now? do you want to change that? >> no. no. i don't. the point of what i said at the
9:07 am
time was, you know, if you're going to stay fixated on things like talking points or fixated on whether or not everybody was affect or not by the video, you're missing the larger picture. >> so now that's a little bit of a cooling of the tune, a little argumentative. >> were you surprised when you heard that last night? i thought she's regretted saying that. it is important. it is important to those family members to know how those individuals died. i was shocked by that and she wants to say we're fixated on this talking point? do you know what? we're fixated how blaise she was about that and fixated this is really her attitude about all of benghazi. >> what an emotional disconnect. >> she was part of perpetuating the false story line that america is bad and because we stigmatized people of other races or religions, we earned this. that's the obama-clinton mantra.
9:08 am
we're probably bad people who need to be reigned in. >> it's now this whole thing of being apologetic, let's apologize for many americans. if we've had terror attacks or things against us or americans murdered, perhaps it's because it's our fault. what kind of message is that? >> let's not forget the state department spent $70,000 in taxpayer money to run advertising in pakistan, apologizing and saying, we don't want to offend anyone. don't worry about the youtube video, even though we know that had nothing to do with what happened. when she talks about talking points and the white house has said this repeatedly, too, why are you so focused on talking points? the talking points matter because the talking points is how the obama administration lied to the american people and stood in front of the flag draped kafk ecaskets at dover a they were killed and they stood in front of them and lied.
9:09 am
that's why the talking points matter. they matter for a reason and the visual is there to prove it. >> you know, do you think this is somebody that's going to click, resonate, by the time 2016 comes around? >> a lot of people aren't educated on this and they need to be because they might have watched that interview and liked the fact she had sheet music on her piano and liked the color of her kitchen. during the break, do you think people will be voting for her just because they want a woman in the presidency? in the white house? she's got -- people need to focus. this is very important, the benghazi issue. >> and harris has been researching and getting more information on our news wires. >> this is the situation we're watching. fox news alert now. bring you up to speed. this is troutdale, oregon. this is a suburb of portland. here is what web. we have tactical teams and that's huge equipment coming in. a couple of developments, though. a local hospital has been told
9:10 am
to be prepared. now, that does not indicate that there are injuries in this. sometimes they will do that as a wider, broader response when a situation like this happens. but for better part of about an hour and a half now, that school has reportedly been on lockdown. it is the reynolds high school in suburban portland, in an area called troutdale and they've been responding quite heavily. in the time we've been on in the last few minutes, we've seen the police force go from about 30 to 40 police officers to well over 100 is what's being told to us now. coming into fox news is information there from the communications command post. and it says that their response at this point is to keep everybody away and to try to secure the scene. they're not saying in detail exactly what they're looking for or whom but an indication that an active shooter is on the grounds there at this high school. previously i mentioned that the wife of the vice principal had
9:11 am
texted her that there was an active shooter and we're working there on fox news to confirm. let's listen in now to the local media there who are reporting this. koin. let's listen. >> what have you guys been doing here at this kind of staging area that has been kind of a makeshift staging area? what have deputies told you about any information about the students or any of the victims? >> they won't tell us anything. they said they can't discuss the matter. just children -- [inaudible] >> you guys have been communicating how with your son? has it been via phone? what time did he first text you? what was that message? >> after i heard about the high school, i texted him.
9:12 am
[inaudible] >> we decided all the family would just show up. we're pretty stressed out because there's nothing we can really do and let the police handle it. >> thank you very much. that's a similar story what we've been hearing all morning long. parents trying to get in touch with their -- >> all right. you see that local reporter there talking with people who are on the sidelines and i have to point this out. that's what local officials didn't want were these parents showing up. they're asking people to please stay away while they secure the scene. we're trying to get an idea here at fox news what's going on in that perimeter but we know that children obviously are part of the story because they're inside of that high school and we see a whole lot of equipment and there are reports that a life flight helicopter has either landed or is nearby in the area. we're watching this very closely. you can see there in the center of your screen the heavy force that has shown up to respond to this call for help at the
9:13 am
reynolds high school in suburban portland area of oregon. as we get more details, we'll bring it to you. can we listen in again? is that possible to listen in local? okay. sometimes we don't have the audio. we can see things but look at that. that communicates so much. whatever is happening there on that campus is tough to get through and you can see at the center of your screen the humanity there we're watching. we have watched this play out far too many times across our country so we have an idea of what it might be to be in that scene. it's a frightening scene for those people, those young people who are caught up in this but the facts are what we're looking for on this. we'll take a quick commercial break. when we come back, hopefully we'll have more information to update you. suburban portland, a heavy show of force at a high school there. stay close. [ dennis ] it's always the same dilemma --

9:18 am
facts that we know. classes were in session when something happened on that campus this morning. that campus immediately went into lockdown. parents were told to stay away. we know from our own reporting and what we've been able to pick up in the last little pit that parents have shown up. don't know if they went there before or after but they're there now on the perimeter so part of keeping the scene calm is trying to keep them back as well so you see the perimeter they've drawn there in the center of your screen and toward the back there trying to keep people off the campus while they deal with a threat and it is a heavy show of force, in excess of 100 police officers. i see the report of 30 to 40 on the bottom of the screen. we can update that. we can also update with two s.w.a.t. teams at the situation as well. the vice principal's wife reportedly got a text from her husband about this situation. and so we know that a threat of violence has existed on the campus for about an hour and 45 minutes. as we get more details, we'll bring them to you. we're watching very closely this
9:19 am
story out of portland, oregon or nearby in troutdale today. stay with us on this breaking news. >> now we're going to shift gears here on "outnumbered" and bring in everybody else on the couch, including the good doctor. we're hearing for the very first time from a connecticut teenager at the center of an interstate battle as she awaits a judge's decision whether to send her home. massachusetts child welfare officials are asking a bay state judge to return her to her parents because they've met the conditions asked of them. she was placed under state care more than a year ago after her parents took her to a boston hospital saying she suffered from a rare disorder. doctors there, however, concluded her condition was due to a psychological issue and said they suspected the parents of medical child abuse. they kept that kid and it's not clear when the judge will rule in the case to return her back. she's made a video and it's going viral online. >> all i really want to be with
9:20 am
is with my family and my friends and that's all i want is just to be with my family and friends back home. what i want to do is right now, you can do it. you're the one that is judging this. please let me go home, judge johnson, and governor patrick, please, right now, please let me go home right now. i need to be home with my family. >> wow. and we're all taking a deep breath as we watch that. what's your first impressions on this? >> let the little girl go home. the parents say they didn't abuse her. she's 15 years old. those are great years. high school years. she's missing out on that. and this is all in the judge's hand. now, if there is evidence of abuse, hey, don't send her home but i trust that the judge will investigate and make sure everything is okay at the home. >> 16 months ago, they went into the e.r. on a snowy night in
9:21 am
boston. this is your home area. you know this family. take us inside the story, though. >> i had dinner with them. people might describe him as a forceful fellow but there is nothing that comes across over a dinner with him and his daughters and his wife that alarmed me and i'm a pretty sensitive listener. this could happen to you or to me. this is about boston's children's hospital where, by the way, they disagreed with new england medical center. new england medical center said this girl has a physical condition confined her to a wheelchair at home and has a host of other symptoms and they said, no. it's psychological. it's all in her head and the parents are probably psychologically involved and we're keeping her. and they kept her for 16 months. this could happen to you if you bring your child with lymes
9:22 am
disease or fiybromyalagia and te doctor ys, no, i don't think so. this hospital has a history of not respecting parental rights in my opinion. in my opinion. >> you know what's interesting in all of this, lawmakers local there will have gotten involved and i'm curious if politicians can play any kind of a successful role in something like this because this is medical. >> i think that they can play a successful role in giving parents back their rights and parents have been seeing their rights go away. one thing i want to point out is there's a question of abuse at the home at the center of the controversy but what about the abuse by the state? this little girl got sicker during the 16 months she was in the care of the state that was supposed to be taking better care of her. >> why is she in a wheelchair now? >> she's sicker now than she was when she was with the parents. parents know what is the best as
9:23 am
she says in the video. i want to be home with my family. she's not saying let me stay here with the state that's taken such good care of me. >> how is it that they could see such a different diagnosis and a psychological one and not a physical one? >> reasonable medical professionals can disagree. they might see a case of lymes disease and say, i don't know. i think it's more depression. or it's more psychological than it can be physical. it's a debate and to a case that you know so well that it's psychological that you're going to take a kid from her family, that's a leap of faith and don't forget it takes place in massachusetts where the governor patrick threatened to jail people who drive during snowstorms. so if you think they're going to respect your rights in his state and stand up for the family, they have another thing coming >> we've seen the division of child and family services take sides now with the family. >> this is a fox news alert. back to the reported school
9:24 am
shooting. the sheriff's office in oregon is confirming that the shooter is dead. to repeat, the shooter is deceased at the scene in oregon. the situation has been stabilized by the sheriff's department. we are awaiting breaking news details about the circumstances of exactly what happened. when you have a case like this with an active shooter on scene, you have multiple agencies, people communicating information. the first objective is to go in, secure the scene and make sure there aren't any additional lives lost. once you've secured the scene like that, then they can come in and give us more information of the circumstances surrounding it. was the shooter someone who was killed by law enforcement officer? did the shooter turn the gun on themselves like we've seen in many of these situations that are highly volatile, emotional, especially when someone makes the choice to go into a school like that to do great harm? we'll bring in the doctor to talk about some of the circumstances here. so often we see people that are making these choices, some of it
9:25 am
is premeditated. there are thoughts they've recorded in a diary, online, youtube videos, perhaps they've been seeking help from a mental health professional like yourself. there may be problems at home. we have to try to unravel it to find out how it happened. >> i think americans may finally be getting the idea that the first thing they should think about is mental health gone awry that lets people slip through the cracks but anti-gun nuts will be out in force saying it's all the guns. i predict, again, that we'll find that yet another person who used a gun was compromised by one or more psychological or psychiatric illnesses that could have been detected because that's how the odds stack up. it's been the case, again and again and again that you say, how could this possibly happen? but i don't say that. i work as a psychiatrist. and i see and get these calls from e.r.'s where they say we want to send this person home.
9:26 am
he threatened his mother and family last night but now he's promising he's fine and we have to get him out of here because the insurance company is on our back. that's why this is happening. >> just a couple of developments now and they are responding now and calling this a shooting for obvious reasons if the shooter is reportedly dead. and then also, this is about 15 miles outside of portland. this is a fairly large high school and again, it was in session with classes when this happened. you know, something that we saw as this was coming together were those people huddled together. we have children but you don't have to have children to know pain when you see it. this has a reverberating effect, doctor. >> it does because all of us who have children, you dread that call, right? you dread that call. you know your life would never be the same and i always tell groving parents who i counsel, i can't fathom what you're going through and will your life ever be the same? it won't, right? that's the achilles' heel of
9:27 am
anybody who has a kid. they know that the worst call you can get is from a pediatrician or a police officer. you don't want those calls. right? and that's what these parents are going through right now because they don't know, is think kid okay. >> this brings up the controversial issue, should security officers there on campuses carry weapons? katie was saying your dad is a teacher and he says that they teach them all this training because it usually takes s.w.a.t. 40 minutes to get to the scene. >> they go for training like this but the problem is they do the best they can with the training but it takes the paramedics and the s.w.a.t. team 40 minutes to get there. there are some serious questions whether that training is the best way to go about how to handle a situation like this. >> as a parent wouldn't you perhaps feel more secure if you knew there was somebody there, armed secure to manage and handle a situation like this?
9:28 am
when you think back about columbine, virginia tech, schools being compromised and targeted because they are traditionally gun-free zones and that's where people that are mentally -- they figured it out and they can get in there and do the most harm. it might take 40 minutes for s.w.a.t. or somebody to get in there. >> we doen know how long it took from that first call, the decision to lock the school down and two s.w.a.t. seems. it took a little time for them to get from a couple of dozen police offers to well over 100 that's being reported by the command post there so just the necessary size of force can take time as well. two things hit me, though, kimberly, because we think of schools like hospitals as soft targets. we only talk about that really in wartime but when you're talking about psychological, unpredictable human beings, it can kind of feel like a wartime. you're fighting something that you can't see.
9:29 am
>> it's unpredictable. >> we don't know that that's the case here but it's an interesting question. >> and i agree with kimberly. i think arming one or more people at these schools makes sense. why wouldn't you want somebody duelly empowered? >> a lot of people don't want live weapons on the campus here. >> there's a news conference happening right now. >> buses are there and we'll probably know more in 15, 20 minutes, okay? thanks for your patience. >> all right. there is another news conference coming up, we understand, in about 15 minutes. as you know, this is a fluid situation and you can see all of those parents who have shown up at the scene, even though they were told not to. but as the doctor is saying, it would be impossible to resist the urge at least to go and find out if your beloved little one was okay. 2800 students registered at the scene. and a fair amount of them, we
9:30 am
understand, were in classes this morning as the situation unfolded with some sort of an active shooter on board. kimberly, as you look at this, those parents have so many questions and you see the law enforcement people, they're struggling to answer them but they're also trying to give the wider public some answers, too. >> absolutely and one of the things in an active shooting situation like that was experienced there this morning, you're going to have multiple units respond and special teams, tactical teams like s.w.a.t. teams that are highly skilled, they do a tremendous amount of training to deal with people in an unstable situation. they can bring in negotiators to try to deescalate the notion, the violence. when you saw the number of officers on scene have gone up to about 100 because think about this. you really don't know. you're working outside of a vacuum and you don't know how many shooters are in there. they've confirmed it's one shooter. the shooter is deceased. but it takes awhile to be able to process and get that because
9:31 am
we've seen a number of shootings where there are two shooters on scene and that can be very difficult when you're trying to secure the premises, especially in schools with a lot of small rooms, widespread, they have to get schematic, the plan of the school to be able to go through and clear every single room, every bathroom, every janitor's closet where someone can be hiding. >> reminds you of how precious live is. hug your child in the morning. sometimes you just don't b what's going to happen at the school that day. it's very scary. you were saying, harris, that the principal was sending out a text to his wife. >> the vice president had texted his wife that there was an active shooter at that time. >> can you imagine getting the text? >> i can't. i want to draw our attention to brand new video coming into fox news. they're trying to clear the premises there. we tonight have a whole lot of information on the shooter but
9:32 am
9:34 am
9:36 am
9:37 am
place in portland, oregon sometime after 8:00 a.m. this morning. the news we have right now is that a shooter is deceased at the scene. the scene has been stabilized and we're going to be hearing from law enforcement in a matter of about 15 minutes. hopefully with an update. you see the scene there? there are many family members anxiously awaiting any kind of news, details, have children been harmed, are their family members okay and is the scene secure? is there any other individuals involved? they'll be going through perimeter searchs and the interior of the school to make sure there are no weapons that have not been recovered at the scene as well. lots of new developments, harris. >> yeah. i want to tell everybody who is watching now, we're toggling between new video you see to the left of your screen and also live pictures which we had previously and a lot of times when we watch stories unfold like this, we'll look for the non verbals. is their urgency in their step?
9:38 am
how far back is the perimeter? that tells us there's an active situation going o. we can tell you upwards of 2,000 students would have been at school today and according to the school calendar, tomorrow, june 11, is the final day of the school year. thursday, june 12 is scheduled graduation. this is a momentous time in those young people's lives. any time would be a horrible one for this to happen. you can imagine people's guards are down, there might have been more people on the perimeter of the school than necessarily because classes aren't as adhered to normally at the end of the school year. those are details we'll learn more about as we go on. right now we're waiting for a news conference coming up and one of the things we're working on is to figure out who will lead this. we popped into one accidentally almost with our live programming but that happens because there's so many people who have shown up to the scene. it's one of the reasons why, when you have this kind of violence on a large campus like this, they will ask parents to stay away to cut down on the
9:39 am
confusion. and that huge, immediate necessity to have to fill people in when they need to do their jobs but you can understand, doctor, how you would look at those tender faces and you would look at those parents at the gate and you would want to fill them in. >> this takes you spew the world of psychiatry. you understand when something like this unfold for however many minutes or hours this goes on, everything recedes into the background. for anyone at home now worried about did the repair get done on the refrigerator -- >> perspective. >> these parents and siblings literally wondering, is my child, my brother, my sister, alive? now, for the length of time this goes on, the fact that life is that random, that tragedy can strike, you send your child to school. it's the day before the last
9:40 am
day. and nowhere in your mind are you thinking they could be struck by a bullet. that is what shatters your sense of well-being and can invite ptsd and flashbacks and nightmares. >> we'll keep our eyes on the screen. >> we'll take phone call now from the mayor of troutdale to give us the latest on that shooting situation. can you hear us? >> i can. >> what do you know at this time? >> what we know is that the shooter is confirmed dead but what they're doing now is they're evacuating the students. the s.w.a.t. teams are evacuating each classroom at a time so they're bringing students out with hands in the air. the second largest high school in oregon so it's a very large campus, thousands of students. so that's what's going on right now. >> are you aware if there's been any like calls, anybody
9:41 am
telegraphing they might do harm or select that very large high school to go into to try to do a shooting, something like that? any threats called in, in the previous week? >> there was no indication at all. this is finals week. students were preparing just to take their finals. i usually get updates from the police chief if anything like that were to happen. we did not hear a word. >> tell us about that area of the school. do you know friends or do you have friends that have students at that school? did you go to that school? tell us if you know anything about the shooter. >> well, we're a suburb of portland, oregon. there's a whole lot of parents waiting out at the school to hear from their kids. most of them have cell phones. there have been tweets coming from inside the school from students. a few of the parents but there's a large number of parents that are just waiting to hear from their kids. >> have you heard any reports
9:42 am
about students talking to their parents or any injury reports? >> we have heard reports of connections between students and parents but there are no reports of any injuries that we've heard yet. >> mr. mayor, obviously a heavy burden for you to face in the weeks to come. is this a school that has security? do you think that this might alter the way you see security at schools in the future? what do you think is appropriate? >> this particular school has school resource officer in place in the school every day so we do have a police officer station to work with the students but as far as security, there's no check-in security like at the airport. there's thousands of students that go here so that would be a discussion point in the future. >> mayor, i want to ask you
