not a lot of people came to the restaurant. my dad came in one day and gave me 20 bucks. i think he felt sorry for me. thank you, jen, for saying that in my ear. thanks for being part of the "real story." now time to head over to shepard smith. breaking news, shepard smith reporting live from the fox news desk. >> good m the fox news desk. breaking news on fox news channel. moments from now police are to hold a news conference on the high school shooting in oregon that sent an entire community into a bit of panic. they already have confirmed the shooting is now dead and one student is dead but there are so many questions to which we seeking answers in the next few minutes. here's what we know right now. right now we can tell you the following. it happened at a high school just east of portland, oregon. the teenage gunman opened fire in the gym killing a student and sparking a panic. students say a warning went out over the intercom telling them to stay quiet and go to their

classrooms. one witness says while he was waiting, he saw a gym teacher with a shirt covered in blood. as many as 100 cops stormed this campus to evacuate the building and search for the shooter and we're hearing from some of the students who were right there. >> heard the gunshot and ran into the gym and we thought it was firecrackers in the bathroom or something because that's where we heard it. we heard it again. we ran to the hallway in between the weight room and the main gym and we barricaded the door and then the police came about 30 minutes later and then they told us to come out with our hands up. >> hundreds of terrified parents gathering outside of the school desperate to find out whether their own kids were safe. >> my mom called me from washington, and she said is hope okay? i said what do you mean? she said there's a shooting. then i dropped to the floor in

there are two people dead. one is a student, a male student, at reynolds high school here in troutdale, a city of about 17,000 people. this is a very big school. about 2,800 students. about 2,000 were at the school at the time. this is the day before the last day of classes. they have final exams today and you can see right down behind me, this is where they blocked off the road. the high school is just beyond there. i'm at a staging area where the news conference is going to happen and short distance away is where students have been bussed taken by the school after they came out of the school with hands up on top of their head to indicate they were not involved in this. there was a lot of panic. initially there was a report of multiple shooters. in fact, a report that there were three shooters as recently as an hour after the shooting. so a lot of confusion as to how many people were in there shooting guns. the other person who was dead is a male. we are not being told he's a student. one witness was quoted as saying
12:04 pm
they believe it was a former student. that's not confirmed. he may be in his 20s, early 20s. i talked to a police officer and he said that it looks like he could be a late teenager or early 20s. this school has good security. they have two full-time troutdale police officers stationed there. again, this was not a full school. this is 2,800 students. 2,000 were there. seniors were not there. they'll be graduating on thursday. that will go on, we understand. again, this happened about 8:10 this morning. it happened in the gymnasium building near the locker rooms. there was panic as students heard the gunshots. they ran into a weight room and locked down there. the announcement went over the pa that everybody was on lockdown and that's where it stayed until police could finally send a robot into a bathroom near that gymnasium and found the shooter dead. >> we're expecting to hear from police in just a moment and we're hoping to learn then something about motive.

have students said anything to you about anything that's happened in the recent past or whether they were concerned after any incidents or anything, dan? >> reporter: i asked a sergeant at troutdale police about any sort of warning. if there was any scuttlebutt of people talking about problems between factions or students at the school. he said no. there was absolutely no warning. this area is very close to portland. on the east side. we're just about eight miles away from downtown portland. not very far. so this is a growing area that has had some gang issues in the past perhaps why they had two full-time police officers stationed inside the school. i asked about metal detectors. i have not been able to get an answer as to how far they have gone in security here and whether they have metal detectors or they wand students. we don't know those answers yet. >> all right. dan springer, thanks. we're waiting for the news conference. i want to show you incredible pictures that have come to us in

locally. this teacher was trying to help other students and got shot. what did you see? >> i didn't really see anything. i talked to people who have and they said that he was running from inside the gym to outside the gym and that's when he got grazed. >> is the teacher, the man with the white shirt between these authorities here. i understand if he was not badly hurt, is that right? >> right. he got grazed by the bullet. he was walking and was perfectly fine. >> what do we know about this student who did die today? >> i'm not sure. the only thing i've heard is that it was most likely a freshman because that's what period they have pe and that's where most of the people were. >> we'll likely hear details on that from police in just a moment. had you guys had -- the mayor suggested you had a shooter drill at school. is that true? >> no.
12:08 pm
>> i wonder where that came from. there was some specifics about that that casualties were limited because of this practice drill but you don't know anything about it either? >> no. >> what's the mood around there? it was described as panic. is that fair? >> it was kind of like panic and then once we found out that there was a student that had actually died, it was more like grieving because we didn't know anything. i never thought it would happen in my school. >> carmen, a student, with us. she was there as it went down. astoundingly, this is the 74th school shooting in the united states since the shooting that happened in newtown. 74 since that one in 2012. kyla is a senior at the school where this happened today. she was walking to school to get her graduation tickets and saw

gabrielle. close air support. we get the gist of it. how does it work? >> when my squadron was in afghanistan, we spent a lot of time circling overhead just in case troops on the ground needed some sort of help. typically what happens is a person on the ground from the unit that needs help will call the unit in the air on the radio and there's often a number of aircraft that will be within reach that have either bombs or guns to support them. there's a brief that the person on the ground briefs the aircrew in standard format. we are showing you some of that information. he gives the target location and description. the time that they need bombs to hit and location of friendly forces to watch out for. essentially all of the information that the aircrew must know to get bombs on target on time and to help the troops on the ground. >> anything, no matter what you do anywhere in the world, mistakes are going to happen. something like this is just heartbreaking. i can't even imagine what those few folks in the air are going through now. >> it really is tragic. you want to be there to help the people on the ground. when things go wrong, they go

really wrong. a lot of things that can happen like human error from the person on the ground to the people in the air putting in those coordinates and there could also be something that's less likely but a malfunction of the bomb itself. according to the department of defense, it was a b-1 bomber strike and not a tactical jet like i flew. not an aircraft suited for this time of work. the b-1 will drop gps guided bombs and they put coordinates of the target into their system and then the bomb essentially flies to it. just as i mentioned before, you have someone on the ground in the heat of battle calling in coordinates to someone who is in the air so the person on the ground could accidentally put in their own coordinates or person in the area could accidentally butt in the wrong coordinates. another thing that has tour considered, you weapon bombs for certain missions. some situations where troops on the ground are too close to drop a bomb because of the blast. >> thanks very much. i'm sure most of you have
