7:00 pm
the full hour. we'll do tonight's show tomorrow. we'll just deliver it tomorrow evening. i'll leave that with the viewers. the grassroots are in revolt and marching and marched right on with hannity tonight. thanks for watching. i'm megyn kelly. this is a fox news alert. welcome to hannity tonight. a stunning upset in the virginia republican primary race. eric cantor has been defeated by tea party challenger dave brat and economics professor. eric cantor is the second most powerful representative in the house of representatives and seen by some as a possible successor to house speaker john boehner. tonight we'll be joined by ann coulter, mark levin and many more but first joining me now on the phone is the man of the hour, virginia gop primary winner dave brat. welcome to the program. >> hey sean, thanks for having me on. >> what do you attribute this
7:01 pm
big win to? >> well, it's pretty much been in my stump speech and basically just lays out -- if you go door-to-door knocking the american people know the country is headed in the wrong direction. the deficit. the economic growth is terrible. the regulatory burden is terrible. and the representation in d.c. won't address those major issues. and so i think the people are just ready for some major changes in this country. and i was blessed. it's a miracle. what do i attribute it to? first i attribute it to god. i'm thankful and humble, i'm a believer and humbled that god gave us this win. right with that god acts through people, and god acted through the people on my behalf. i had volunteers working just tirelessly across the counties. i tried to communicate that to the news media what was going on and it's hard to communicate
7:02 pm
that. it was real and it turn out we were celebrating like crazy. an unbelievable miracle. >> i've been listening a lot to the analysis all night, dave, and i think you touched on something that i was thinking about that i think a lot of people have missed and that is i think this is maybe a little bit bigger than tea party versus conservative. i think the country is fed up with the fact we have record debt, error deficits, 50 million people in poverty, 50 million people on food stamps. we have a va that's not working. obamacare is an absolute mess. to what extent do you think these national issues have impacted this race in particular? >> well, yeah, tremendously. i agree with that. and just so you know, i mean the press in my own region in the introduction tonight i'm not holding anybody's feet to the fire it wasn't a contest between the tea party and the republicans and all this. although i got tremendous tea party support in just wonderful
7:03 pm
people in the tea party, grassroots helping me out and they are clearly responsible for the win but i ran on the republican principles. and we have this republican creed in virginia and the only problem with the republican principles is no one is following them. first one is commitment to free markets. we don't have any free markets in this country any more. equal treatment under the law and fiscal responsibility, constitutional adherence. peace through strong defense. faith in god. and strong moral fiber. that's what i ran on. the republican creed -- but the press is always out to have these exciting stories to sell pap papers, and people do care about policy. when you're serious i give 30 minute stump speeches on policy and the press made fun of me. these are not fun much stump speeches you are talking about serious issues. >> it's interesting you say all that. i have been making a point as a
7:04 pm
conservative commentator both on radio and tv i make a clear distinction between conservative governors like rick perry and bobby jindal and kasich and rick scott and i've been comparing them and using words like timid and afraid and lacking vision when talking about washington republicans. is that a factor in all of this? >> yeah. right. the vision thing, and i expand on that, even. some of this goes back to constitutional principles, and everybody wants the federal government to solve every problem in their life. and so part of the issue is, some of these issues we got to look in the mirror. the cultural issues, that's not due to politicians. our educational system, everyone thinks it can be solved spending in finite money interest. a lot of it comes down personal responsibility and discipline. and our test scores, you know,
7:05 pm
we're at the bottom on math and science scores. we're competing with the rest of the world. so we have to do better and our kids test scores right now that's our future economy in 20 years. so fundamentals matter and everybody knows we're off track so this country has got to turn around and, you know, with reagan i'm optimistic always what the american people can do but we got to take the shackles off the regulatory burden something like $2 trillion out of the $17 trillion economy and get rid of that you can unleash the american people and they are ready to roll. >> i brought up and i've been a little bit frustrated because i feel like there are five specific issues that the alternative governing party ought to offer and these were on your list. fiscal responsibility. i like the penny plan. i think we should balance the budget. choice in education. there's no consensus, four years into the obamacare, snoqualme pass ing of obamacare there's no republican consensus plan.
7:06 pm
securing the borders. and simple things. and we haven't gotten that. do you think this is frustration more towards washington in general or the republican party as an alternative governing party? >> well, in virginia the republican party has been kind of taken it to the grassroots and the grassroots is rightly upset because the grassroots is mocked routinely in the press. i don't understand it happen the outpouring alone from these folks that have supported me and worked tirelessly for me and so in virginia we've had some problem with this technical issue called slating, the republicans have been taking conservatives out of their own district democratic processes. and so there is some anonimosity but the republican party has been paying too much attention
7:07 pm
to wall street and not enough to main street. the american people want to take the country back and what motivated the race for me was after the financial cry circumstance we had fannie and freddie collapse. i thought surely our political leaders, we're on our knees economically, we'll learn some lessons and get it right and they didn't. we're still roughly in the same mess. >> a lot of people, reagan is beloved within the republican ranks. people for get reagan challenged the sitting president in 1976 and nearly won. dave, i ask you this. you took on, in this particular case, a job that nobody thought the house majority leader, i can remember a time in history where this has happened before and i've been looking all night and what you said while he has an eye on the speaker's job he turn his back on his constituents and the big issue was the issue of immigration especially in the
7:08 pm
final days of this campaign. you said the amnesty issue is symbolic powerful expression about the difference between eric cantor and i on jobs. cantor is saying we should bring more folks to the country n-crease the labor supply and by doing so lower wage rates for the working person. his policies make no sense. how big an issue do you think the immigration issue was in this campaign? >> well, i think it's big. it's the most symbolic issue that captures the differences between myself and eric cantor in this race, but it also captures that fissure between main street and wall street. you ask yourself why are the republicans doing this? why are they so intent on this immigration reform and there's no answer that really makes logical sense. right? it's clear they are doing it for the chamber of commerce and they want cheap labor and expanded workforce and whatever. that's going to lower wages for
7:09 pm
everybody else. and, you know, i teach third world economic development and, you know, my intent -- if you really want to help these folks, were wants to come to this country because we're rich and the reason we're rich is because we have a very firm rule of law. and protection of property rights. if you want to help the rest of the world you need to encourage free markets, private property rights and strong rule of law and get rid of the dictators in a lot of these countries. if we do that -- those are just fundamental simple ideas and, we did that after world war ii with japan and germany, we built them up, we trade together and everybody is rich. it works out well. it's a win-yuan. clearly we cannot import 7 billion people on the planet into the united states u.n. it's a nonstarter. >> dave i've been watching the reaction and the analysis of people like steve israel and debbie wasserman-schultz and
7:10 pm
chuck schumer was quoted. it's interesting, and democratic commentators try to make this or paint this as a party moving right. and as i have gone over your platform and followed this particular race, can you think of one issue where you are against the republican platform and what the republican party has historically stood for? >> no. no. that's exactly -- if that's what they are saying i haven't seen any comments. that's just pure politics and it's bad ethics. it's unethical because it's not true. it's not about right or left. free markets are indisputably the cause of our wealth. china is the perfect case in point. they are feeding 1.2 billion people for the first time in world history due to one thing, free market. we as republicans that's the number one issue in our creed, and that is a compassionate position. we're feeding 1.2 billion and
7:11 pm
india is 1.2 billion people also. no i'm running 100% on mainstream republican issues, and the republicans need to do a better job of following these and then we'll get the country out of the ditch. >> i would agree with you it's in a ditch. leapt me ask you this. there's a report this week about ted cruz. every republican i know ran on the idea of replacing obamacare. but when it came down to a moment where they could have an impacts ted cruz angered the establishment in washington by actually forcing the issue of the promise that they all made, the last report this week that said after the mid-terms that the reestablishment would go after ted cruz. so we have an issue where yeshic cantor went to the sea coast earlier this year and was going to battle the tea party. what is your take on the relationship and what it needs to be between the tea party and the establishment?
7:12 pm
>> well, the grassroots, the tea party, and be the republican party all share almost identical principles. and, you know, i went to seminary, i think you did also. >> i did. they kicked me out. thenned to. >> yeah. principles matter, right. so every ethic before us, great philosophers that paid attention to first principles and if you pay attention to those you can lead a better life and your country does better. the founders were political philosophers. i don't see much of that in the republican party and i don't see any of that in the democratic party. we need to quit playing politics every day. everything is about crass politics. democrats are making statements about me moving to the right. there's nothing right or left about free markets. there's nothing right or left about rule of law. >> well said.
7:13 pm
>> they are framing it incorrectly. >> what i have been saying is that i think the country right now with 50 million americans in poverty and 50 million americans on food stamps and our veterans being put on fraudulent waiting lists and issue after issue, national security issues we're dealing with, for me i was there the night that newt gingrich became the speaker of the house. i love the contract with america. if i had five items it would be balance the budget. stop robbing our kids opinion i like the penny plan. control our board serious another one. we can duplicate the job success with energy in north dakota. we need a consensus alternative that the country can rally on for obamacare. and we got to get kid out of our failing schools and that's where school choice would come in. do you think that maybe this might be a moment where the republican party can pivot alibi be kind of unite and say hey we can make the country better. here's our vision. elect us and we'll do those things opinion >> i like all five of those
7:14 pm
things. instead some of the republicans are at the federal level putting together policies that the federal government, i think they call making life work. these catchy little phrases to compete with democrats for votes. they are catchy but the strategy doesn't sound good to me. i don't think the federal government should be involved in making life work. the enew mr. rated powers at the state level is fine, local level is fine but i don't want the federal government trying to make my life work. so, those five you just mentioned, i'm in agreement with all five and with a caveat i want everything delegated from the federal level back down to the state tloefl run those programs. >> let me ask you one thing in terms of technicality. you were up against a $5.5 million machine and you had $200,000? >> yeah. >> that's a pretty significant disadvantage wouldn't you say? >> yeah. so, you just do the math with
7:15 pm
the numbers. the good news is dollars don't vote and so people do. so i just paid attention to people. and people love to be involved in the political process. they love the ideas. and i just cannot thank the folks who helped me out enough. tremendous support across the entire district. >> how would you identify yourself? this is my last question. thank you for a lot of your time tonight. two last questions. what do you want to say to eric cantor tonight and as the democrats now are going to work very hard to position you as an primist. how would you identify yourself. >> to eric cantor throughout the entire race i always said i'm not running against eric cantor as a person, he's a fine person but i just ran against him on the principles i enumerated on my webpage and i went through them methodically.
7:16 pm
the republican leadership were off course on those fundamental principles that i said are on the republican creed. i encourage people to go to my webpage. i need funds to compete against the democrats. it's davebratforcongress.com. second question is how do i position myself against the democrats who want to call me far right. i just recommend people like i do the piece that the piece never took me up on this, they never report opened the facts. i wish they would do their jobs and report the news. just look at my biography. i've been a conservative my whole life. there's nothing hard right or far right about anything. i just believe in ideas and ideas matter in history and that's my background and that's the way i would like to be portrayed. i highly doubt the press will take my counsel but that's the way i would like to be portrayed. >> if you google me if it's any
7:17 pm
consequence, not the most flattering things you read but this was a political earthquake tonight and i think we'll have you back on hopefully tomorrow night. dave if you can stay on the line. congratulations on what's a huge political earthquake and joining me now with analysis we have special report host bret baier and carl cameron. carl, what's your reaction? >> he's making a good case this is not a tea party versus establishment win. in a lot of cases those terms really doesn't cut it. what was really going on here, seems to be the grassroots rising up against the washington establishmen and the gop leadership. the frustration across washington is bipartisan in the republican party, the party, and long standing conservative, the base of the party. folks like bret bosell is arguing it's not a question of
7:18 pm
labels but a question of leadership. eric cantor went to florida, went to a big conference for a group called republican main street partnership which is specifically a group that runs ads against tea party candidates who are challenging incumbents. that was a real in your face to the tea party and to the grassroots, essentially saying we don't want to hear from you any more. mitch mcconnell said we'll crush the tea party at every election. that rhetoric ticks off the base of the party. they want to have responsive leadership. they want leadership that shares their principles. more than anything they want leadership that doesn't buckle at the 11th hour and american people have seen republicans and democrats alike dead of christmas night passing legislation nobody wants. >> i listened very closely to what he was saying tonight. i want to get your take. i listened to a lot of the analysis. i thought some of it was a little off. because i think the country
7:19 pm
realizes we're on the wrong track and from my own experience and talking to people on the radio three hours a day, women want solutions. they want answers. they want a better -- they want the country in better shape. in that want sense i think both parties ought to look at this and say hey maybe this isn't good, maybe this is a wake up call to all of us. >> sean, listening to that interviews dave brat laid it all out. he said that he was a republican through and through and not identifying himself one way or another as tea party or far right. i will say a couple of things. one is the tea party groups, the big ones they didn't really support dave brat. in fact they didn't provide him anything. i loved his line when he said to you that in the money situation he only had about $100,000 a little bit north of that against eric cantor's $2.5 million. he said dollars don't vote. he ran a campaign that was broader than just immigration
7:20 pm
reform and obviously immigration played a big issue and that's where he got talk show host laura ingrahm engaged in this race. you just heard him on spending. it was more anti-establishment. on washington not getting things done. and that's broader. i think there was a lot of focus in our first hour about immigration which is a key issue. but maybe too much focus because you look across the board, for example, lindsey graham in south carolina who should face a real conservative backlash, he is on the bill. he's a co-sponsor of immigration reform and yet he got above 50% against his challenger in south carolina. >> bret, he reached out to the tea party. he said there might be some issues we disagree on but where we agree i'll be your greatest advocate than a different tact than eric cantor. we got to take our first break. mash levin was a very early supporter of dave brat.

eric cantor. joining me now with analysis, nationally syndicated talk show radio host mark levin. mark, you were probably the most prominent public figure supporting this guy, he was on your show last night, he was on your show a number of times before. we had him on for a good 15 minutes tonight. gave very, very coherent solutions to the problems this country is facing. talks about a lot of things you talk about. the constitution. what is your analysis. what happened here tonight? why did he win? >> first of all, you just heard him for 15 minutes. does he sound like a kook to you the problem is every conservative candidate you can call tea party candidate whatever you want is dismissed, i hate to say it, is dismissed by one or two or three of your prominent commentators because they are pushing different candidates and so forth. i think what's happening is people are sick and tired of centralized government and the impact it has on their life whether it's obamacare, whether
7:25 pm
it's the chamber of commerce and the afl-cio pushing amnesty. it is amnesty until we secure the border it's amnesty. they are tired of being pushed around and bullied by mitch mcconnell and others who rub their noses in it. we'll crush you. when he says tea party, the tea party is bigger than any particular tea party group. the tea party is americans who rose up and gave john bone terrify speakership and then to be talked to that way. you know, the analysis has been so wrong the last several months. i looked at boehner's numbers. boehner got 69% in the republican primary against a 30-year-old adjunct prove swhor had $100,000. that's a disaster showing for a man who has been there for 24 hours. i look at mcconnell. the republican leader in the senate been elected five, six times. he got 60% against a citizen candidate that's never run for office before? cornyn in texas ran against for our five candidates.
7:26 pm
he got 59%. folks keep bringing up lindsey graham. lindsey graham had six opponents who were fighting with each other. they couldn't get behind a single cane. if he had a guy like brat or mcdaniels or somebody else he would have had a tougher night. mississippi, a republican who has been there forever, thad cochran and there's no reason to back cochran. his days are over. everybody knows it. he was beaten in the republican primary by mcdaniels. what's happening? haley barber and these other lobbyists are going after him. look that. the republican party leadership better look up. people want a new republican party with fresh faces, vigorous leadership and they are not getting it and they want it because the republican party is the only organization that can challenge obama and schumer and all the others and start to defeat them. >> mark, you served in the reagan administration, you were ed neese's chief of staff.
7:27 pm
brit hume gave a good envelopes that somebody like yourself getting behind a candidate can have a powerful impact. in this race indict. reagan, people forget challenged the sitting president in '76. nearly beat that sitting president. now he's viewed, everyone loves ronald reagan at this point but at the time he was taking on the establishment. he said is it a third-party we need? no. it's a revitalized second party with no pale pastels but bold color differences. do you see an analogy between this time and that time? >> i do. the people are yearning for a leader. they don't like the status quo whether it's democrats or republicans. they don't like mitch mcconnell getting up and saying we'll crush you or boehner making his jokes and so forth and this
7:28 pm
isn't a joke to the american people. this is their future. and we see the country slipping away at least the kind of country that we want and why is it so hard for these guys to articulate our principles? they talk about reagan but they are rockefeller republicans. what's ironic about this is the main opponent to reagan in 1980 was george h.w. bush and now it's jeb bush his son who seems to be main opponent to conservatives who are trying to rally behind a candidate in order to take this country back and when i say take this country back, i mean from a president who is an imperial president who every day says he'll act unilaterally and does across the board. we wake up the morning and we don't know the next outrageous thing he's going to do and congress acts like it has no power. it has power. it has power of the purse. it has power to do other things and needs to do it and they are afraid of obama, afraid to take these steps and you can see there's a percolating anger and
7:29 pm
frustration among many of the american people not justin republican party. i'll tell you one other thing. you look at this election in 2012 of obama. obama should have been beaten by a halfway competent presidential candidate in the republican party that could articulate the principles of the party and expose obama's weakness. we didn't do it. millions of people stayed home. who are those million of people? those were reagan democrats. those are blue collar democrats. stop chasing ethnic groups. talk to the american people. talk about liberty, opportunity, explain to them that obama is wrong and that we need to unleash the american people and the economy. >> you might be making news with that genitalia remark. isn't it also, you talk about the country slipping away. in one of your books you said we're living in a post-constitutional america. mark, 50 million americans are out of work. you see what's happening with kbarm. they can't put up a website.
7:30 pm
you see was twhapg irs and va. look what our government is doing is flying people into tucson, and americans are saying secure the border. how important is that? how much impact did all of this have on this race? >> we have an obama-made refugee problem and it's growing on our southern border. it's like we're the third world. people are pouring over our border. it's the president's responsibility to secure it. he went all the way to the supreme court to fight arizona and texas and georgia and south carolina and other states and said no i'm in charge of immigration. i'm in charge of it. what has he done? he's unleashed criminals into this country. he won't secure the borer. this is what people want. they want that border secure. they want that e-verify enforced and then talk about the other subjects. since 1986 the american people have been told that border would be secure and now we have people coming across here. we don't know who they are.

dave, good to see you now. >> good to be with you now. . >> i want to go back and this as you know is a political earthquake what's happened here tonight and being viewed as such. what message should this send not only to the gop, but democrats as well. democrats think oh, this shows the tea party controls the republican party. is it that or is it that maybe the country is looking for jobs and websites built by the federal government correctly and a va that supports our vets. which side do you think this is? >> yeah. that's right. the american people are very interested in real ideas and moving beyond the sound bites and so right now our political dialogue in the nation is just concerned with this right and left versus debate and my entire campaign was built along a stump speech that took 20 minutes or so full of serious ideas and people resonated with that and they love that. so i had volunteers working
7:35 pm
endless hours for me and they paid attention and the american people want to pay attention to serious ideas again. our founding was built by people who were political philosophers and we need to get back to that and away from this cheep political rhetoric of right and left. i ran on free markets. i don't know those are right or left. i ran on rule of law, property rights. i ran on immigration. i don't think those are right and left issues. i think those are just free market constitutional issues. >> you now will replace the house majority leader. walk us through if you can guide the republican party and i think you'll have a pretty bigamy crow phone and a loud voice when you finally get to washington, assuming you win the race and i would think you have a very good chance. let me ask this, what would you say? to go in that do you want this would help solve the country's
7:36 pm
problems? >> right. right. i don't think a lot of folks in d.c. understand what free markets are. that's the most important piece. fannie and freddie made two-thirds of all subprime mortgages. that's not a free market institution. that entity along with the fed printing too much money back in '03 and '04 caused the housing collapse. we need to take free market seriously. we have to put an to end all these tax credits and tax deductions anticipate loopholes. dave camp had a good bill in which simply electrified the tax code. that made sense. it was going to be pro growth. produce 1% more economic growth. so that will help us restore jobs. and closing the border is very important. i ran hard on that issue. first you got to get your own house in order before you can help others and we're out of control right now. on fiscal discipline our debt is

listening to him lay out his platform is pretty instructive for people who maybe didn't follow this campaign. it wasn't just immigration reform but he did use that issue towards the end to really hit eric cantor hard on a number of different talk shows including as we talked about laura ingrahm and mark levin, glenn beck and used that effectively because he only had about $150,000 against $2.5 million in eric cantor's coffers. there's other issues. the overall anti-establishment feel here that washington isn't working. there was the nsa issue that brat used in this campaign to say what nsa is doing on some level is a violation of fourth amendment. there were a whole host of issues beyond immigration reform but clearly that fired everybody up in the final days and i'll just say this. i think, sean, there's a real

question here whether house majority leader cantor is going to stay on. as you know, that job is about influencing members and influencing votes and counting heads. it's actually the majority whip that whips the votes but the majority leader leads them to them and if you don't have the backing of your own district it's tough to imagine you have a backing of a caucus you have to move one way or another. >> great observation. our own dana perino made the same suggestion and we'll know inhe days and weeks ahead. i went over all of the campaign issues here, bret and you were following this on special report especially in the final days leading up to this vote tonight. but, the one thing that's happening that i feel around the country as a conservative, as a registered conservative is people that call my radio show, people that e-mail me, people that write, people that watch fox, people that i talk to they are all saying the same thing

they feel the country is headed in the wrong direction. every poll shows they are not happy with washington. and the one thing that they are looking for, and they repeat over and over again they want solutions. as i look over all that he ran on in this race, he ran on providing an alternative solution, a different vision for the country, is there a model there that maybe people, analysts are missing? >> yeah. listen. you listen to him and he lays out policy position, and he lays them out in detail. which sometimes is rare for a candidate in a campaign and in a house race especially to go on like that. he's an economics professor at randolph macon north of richmond and he's going to face another professor, a democrat from the same college which is quite an interesting story in and of itself. i think that this race is really indicative as you say of this kind of angst around the country that congress isn't working,

incumbents aren't getting it done republicans or democrats and there's a wish to shake things up. there could be this, this element of cantor that we aren't factoring in about how he presented himself, hour his staff dealt with people. if you talk to people on the hill there was a sense of arrogance they got from the office that they were untouchable and they weren't paying attention to this race. now he's lost. >> one of the lines that brat used in the campaign about cantor while he has an eye on the speaker job he turn his back on the constituents. if you're thad cochran tonight what your thinking, bret baier? >> i think you're thinking you have a real uphill climb because this, i think, all would argue that this energizes a tea party that perhaps wasn't -- they were energized but not to this extent. to be able to take out a house majority leader i think thad cochran who is now in a run off

nationwide tea party bull's eye on his back because they saw it as an affront he was flaunting the republican leadership disdain for the tea party. not cool not smart. i spoke with some cantor people this afternoon and this evening asking them how they felt about this and when they saw it coming and they argued convincingly they had a little bit of an itch about a week ago because they saw mr. brat getting a bit of traction.pratt getting traction. as late as this afternoon, they said they had no idea it was coming. this has pro found impolitics for republican house leadership. in an owed way it may fortify john boehner. with cantor and office below the speaker, it may strengthen boehner, raising questions about

are created i have been labeling the g.o.p. in washington, timid and afraid to outline an agenda like these governors are doing. am i right or wrong here? >> i think you're right. also, unable to connect with the middle class if you look at what brat was saying he wasn't making the case against amnesty, his point is look. you import immigrants, you've got a labor shortage. we have persistent high unemployment. this will depress wages for middle class workers. making that case connects with the group of voters that are really hurting in the recession. the guy spent $250,000 to cantor's $5 million and crushed him. what does that tell you? that the message is what is resonating. that is what he wanted. a middle class message. >> take a guy like scott walker,
