"fox & friends" starts right now. >> bye. good morning. today is wednesday, june 11. i'm elisabeth hasselbeck. we begin with a fox news alert. a shocking political defeat that no one saw coming. congressman eric cantor ousted, becoming the first house majority leader in history to lose his primary defeated by this washington outsider and tea party candidate, dave brat. >> we believe in god gave us this miracle today, and we believe that that tpaeupgt -- faith and strong moral fiber is necessary for the continuation of the republic as it stands. and i truly believe that. >> who is dave brat and how his victory affects the balance of power in washington? that straight ahead.

3:02 am
house majority leader eric cantor losing the virginia primary in his district to the tea party challenger dave brat. no house majority leader has lost his seat since 1899. >> historic and pivotal moment there. doug luzader is followg this from washington. doug, certainly a late night for many. good for some, not so good for others. what do you have for us this morning? >> reporter: good morning, guys. in any election year there are some races you watch very closely and some races where you assume what the outcome is going to be. this was definitely a part of that latter group. a stunning upset. eric cantor, i suppose very few would blame him if he hadn't even thought about what he would say in a concession speech, but he found himself in that situation last night. >> i know there's a lot of long faces here tonight, and it's disappointing, sure. but i believe in this country. i believe there's opportunity around the next corner for all of us. so i look forward to

continuing to fight with all of you for the things that we believe in, for the conservative cause, because those solutions of ours are the answer to the problems that so many people are facing today. thank you all very, very much. >> and the guy who is considered a giant killer today, david brat, is a university economics professor. he pulled this off on a shoestring. he was massively outspent but he did happen into some anger, g.o.p. anger towards the establishment especially towards immigration reform. here is brat last night in his surprising victory speech. >> we believe in god who gave us this miracle today and we believe in the faith of the founders and we believe that that faith and that strong moral fiber is necessary for the continuation of our republic as it stands. and i truly believe that. >> a couple of things to consider here. brat still has to face the general election.
3:04 am
he will face a democratic challenger even though this is a solidly republican district. interesting little side note, his democratic challenger is also a professor at randolph macon college. democrats wasted very little time last night sending out this fund-raising e-mail based on cantor's loss. they think this bodes well for them. one thing you have to look at, massive, surprising turnout in virginia yesterday. if that's the sort of thing we see come november, that could bode very well for republicans. back to you, guys. >> there was a big turnout. almost everyone was surprised. it happened to be one of those nights where i was watching all the shows prior to when the election came in and nobody had eric cantor winning but many said it was a surprising -- >> losing. >> it was surprising he was getting a real challenge. and even the challenge by dave brat, getting close would have sent a significant message. but other people said he spent $100,000.
3:05 am
this is all the professor spent. eric cantor wasn't caught by surprise. he spent about five million bucks. by going after brat, he also evidently, a lot of analysts say gave him a stage and a lot of attention and that resulted in a very tough fight, a fight he would lose by about 11 points. one thing to keep in mind, and i don't know the significance of this. but democrats could vote in this. >> it was an open primary. >> if democrats voted in big numbers to shock republicans that could have played a role. >> this could be an injection of strength, as some are saying. dave brat said if you do the math, do the numbers. dollars don't vote people do. in 2007, nearly 18,000 more republicans -- >> in the seventh district. >> in 2014 this primary right here, more people voted than before. the answer is they're turning out. they're turning out because they're frustrated and they feel as though the republican leaders aren't leading on the principles that defined them from the start.
3:06 am
>> the big question is who is this guy? who is dave brat? we heard from doug luzader. he is a professor who is going to face another professor from the university there in the richmond area. what is interesting is eric cantor spent $2 million. what he was trying to do was brand him as a liberal professor and what it wound up giving him was about $1 million of name i.d. >> it backfired. >> it did backfire in some ways and as it turns out he was not really a liberal professor. to many what it became was a referendum either on the washington establishment. you know, washington is not listening to me. i can do something about it with my one single vote. and it also became a referendum on cantor because eric cantor hadn't been pushing some form of amnesty for the dreamers. nonetheless mr. brat did win. it was stunning. here he is last night. he's a happy guy. >> the american people wanted to pay attention to

that have been coming through, like the border thing flooded by undocumented individuals there. >> just this week. >> could not have been more up front to bring. when people placed their vote, and this is the key issue, they were strong on it, they want more security in all these areas. >> one of the local papers there, the "wall street journal" has an interview with a former president of the tea party in richmond. that person was there around the polls and sensed a huge amount of discon at no time amongst the constituents. i'm sure there is the issue of amnesty. a lot of people felt mr. cantorb spending so much time in washington worrying about g.o.p. politics, he said people started to feel cantor was more worried about fortune 500 companies than people in his district. this person goes on to say we would have loved to have had more town halls about what is going on here and instead we saw him on television. >> it looks like he was a

shoe-in to be the next speaker because there was strong rumors that john boehner was going to say i'm going to retire. and eric cantor, who i met a few times on camera, off camera, in the real world as opposed to his professional world is a really nice guy but they say his staff isn't that nice -- arrogant, using a lot of their political muscle on capitol hill, and it turned a lot of conservatives off. having said that look at the margin of victory. this isn't 49-48. >> it's 11 points. mr. brat was outspent by mr. eric cantor, 14 to 1. mr. brat's campaign manager is 23 years old. he had two people running his campaign off of a flip phone. >> a flip phone. >> this goes to show you this is a political earthquake. you know, and a lot of it
3:10 am
is perhaps, given the fact that there's so much talk about what's going on on our southern border with this humanitarian crisis and all these people streaming across, that did hit mr. cantor at the wrong time given the fact that cantor has had some interest in some sort of dream amnesty and you couple that, was it a referendum on amnesty? was it a referendum on our congressman isn't spending enough time on us? was it because of the weather? was it because democrats crossed over and voted in an open primary? right now we don't know. all we know is it is a political earthquake. down in virginia seventh district. >> we'll talk with steve forbes coming up with his reaction. what's going to happen economically? we've got this economic brain moving in here in primary season, now moving
