one strand of my lego hair out of place back then. we weren't oblivious. we were on to this. but that was then. we wouldn't be so stupid to fall for this nonsense now. or would we? it . hello, everyone. i'm andrea tantaros. it's 5:00 in new york city, and this is "the five". well, america, have you heard? the world is safer than ever. >> the world is less violent than it has ever been. it is healthier than it has ever been. it is more tolerant than it has ever been. >> and of course the president and his vp have also told us that al qaeda is on the run. >> there should be no doubt, today america is stronger and al qaeda is on the path to we decimated altd ald's leadership. al qaeda is on the path to

defeat and bin laden is dead. >> we decimated al qaeda central, eliminated osama bin laden. al qaeda is much weaker than it was when i came into office. >> al qaeda is hardly on the path to defeat. the terror network has just retaken two major cities in iraq and is on the march to boog dad. remember when joe biden said iraq would be one of this administration's greatest achievements? >> i'm stvery optimistic about iraq. i think it will be one of the great achievements of this a administrati administration. >> but today obama was forced to acknowledge this. >> iraq is going to need more help. going to need more help from us and more help from the international community. i don't rule out anything because we do have a staking in making sure that these jihadists are not getting a permanent foothold in either iraq or syria. >> too late.
2:02 pm
iraq is getting some help but not much from us. iran has deployed members of its revolutionary guard to iraq to try to conquer al qaeda. dana, i go to you first on this one. the president says that we're going to be getting involved. this is after he's telegraphed our time table of when we're leaving, ignored military advice of how many troops to keep in the country, told us al qaeda is on the run. falling apart at the seams. number of cities. what should the u.s. do? what can he do? >> well, one of the things we could do is to fulfill the -- one of the promises president obama made which was for air cover. that is something that the prime minister of iraq asked for. everything that i come to in terms of a solution at this point feels too little, too late. in 2011 deny us mcdonough said iraq was ready. that they were ready to take over, everything was going to be
2:03 pm
fine. the thing about the global war on terror is i understand wanting to get out, but not leaving behind a residual force it that was large enough in order to help them transitioning an iraq that could keep terrorists at bay, now we have a situation that is actually worse than the status quo before 2003. and i'm dismayed. i'm upset for the iraqis. i'm worried for the united states and for all of the innocent people who are there who are are having to flee because of this morphing of al qaeda. a lot of this goes back to the decisions in syria and our decisions as a country, president obama decided not to enforce his red line. and i think that all of these things can be traced right back to that decision. >> dana makes a great point. we took iraq from the baathists. we now lost thousands of lives, thousands of people are maimed and disabled, greg, and we turned it over to al qaeda. >> this past month is amazing.
2:04 pm
president obama's got the opposite of a midas touch. everything he touches turns to poop. it can't get much worse. he doesn't rule out anything but action. he realizes that radical islam can be house trained. there's one thing we can do. it is time for us to batten down the houses, frac the hell out of this place. we need to make our country as impenetrable as obama's skull. right now chaos is all over the world. we're the only stain people left. it's time to look out for us, and it's time to make our borders a national defense issue. kevin williamson wrote a great piece about this, it's the only thing that separates us from the hordes at this point, making sure they can't get in. >> the president has said al qaeda is on the run. he seems to think because we've gotten osama bin laden everything is fine and dandy. he telegraphed the time line.
2:05 pm
today breaking news a number of americans are air lifted out of iraq. colonel ralph peters said, the jihadis are officially winning. >> in the middle east, the united states is now 0 in its weakest position since 1945. and the birth of the modern middle east. jihadis are winning because they are willing to it die for their 50 nat cal cause. we are facing a problem if not caused as i believe if not exacerbated by obama's dilatory init competence. >> president obama making it worse. >> it that's a great line. couple of observations. i'm profoundly saddened by what's going on in iraq. we lost a lot of bodies, a lot of american kids there. we spent a ton of money there. and now it feels like it's all going away very quickly. i'm going to agree with greg with the oil. i think what we really need to do is it become self-sufficient on oil. look what happened today with just what's going on so far oil pric
2:06 pm
prices spiked and will continue if they take the southern port, where the oil exportation happens. i'm going to disagree a little with dana. i think we did what we were suppose 0ed to in syria because, again, this isis group is a rebel group, not very much unlike the soc group which we backed. so there's a group that we actually said, john mccain said, yes, we should let the rebels in syria, we should back them with some military support, with some money, with some weaponry. and then this isis group, do you realize these two groups are fighting arm in arm together against ba similshar al assad. my point is, don't get involved with these confrontations, don't loan money, give bodies, sacrifice human beings, americans for some of these things until we know exactly who we're fighting for and who we're fighting with. in one sense i think we made some good moves and some

mistakes. >> dana? >> i'll pass on that. bob is huffing and puffing. >> i don't know. you're both making face for different reasons. i'll let bob's look of disgust take it away. >> there's so much revisionism going on here. first of all, there never were islamic radicals in -- they came in after the baathists. saddam hussein kept that country in pretty good shape. he was our ally remember against the iranians. i'm going to draw on the fact i was opposed to this war in the beginning or a lot of this was priktded a long time ago. the iranians were the ones who rose up and the iranians are where these people are coming from and the iranians themselves. the idea that the revolutionary guard would be in iraq, saddam hussein would have mowed them all down. but we made a run iniran into a country. this isn't something the president lost. what are we going to do, stay there 40 years? >> we did that with korea. >> that was --

>> we did it with japan. >> that was by treaty. that there hasn't been a fight over there. >> look what we did for japan. look what we did for korea. >> do you want us to -- >> that's what we used to do 0. >> for what? >> that's what we use 0ed to do. we don't anymore. fine. >> that was a world war. this is not a world war. >> what is it, then? >> it's not a global war on terror? talk about revisionist history. everybody forgets that on 9/11 one of the keys was to try to prevent a place where terrorists would have a safe haven to plot and plan. they're not going to stay within one border. they don't even think there is a border now. that's what this group declared today, that the border between iraq and syria no longer exists. going back to the auto man emtire. i think we're foolish to think that we pretend nothing is happening, just focus here. where they have a safe haven to plot and plan, you can't drone that out of a state like that. >> the idea that the united

2:10 pm
>> there's a good shot. >> president obama -- >> you take shots constantly, bob. you sit there and act like everything from 1978 is still relevant today after 9/11. >> i think you're suggesting 9/11 seem tobz the rationale for everything we do. >> so afghanistan. president obama is now declared that by 2015-2016 we will be completely out ofafghanistan. by your own admission it's a mistake. >> i don't think we should be there at all. >> let's talk reality. >> too late. >> the reality is we're there. why do you keep putting hillary clinton back in the spotlight? >> i like the word. >> this doesn't have anything to do with her at all. >> why are we in afghanistan? >> we're there. so the question is, do you turn it over to the afghanis and risk what's going on in iraq? or do you stay? >> do you stay for 50 year oz? >> i'm asking you, bob? >> it's time to leave special

power he had to disband the iraqi military was just the most ridiculous -- >> i agree. >> all he did was turn them into radicals. the country is lost and so 0 is afghanistan. >> the country is lost. it's the united states. we have vets dying in hospitals. we've got children amassing on the borders. we have an entire region imploding. we have terrorists being released like 0 doves. can we create a golden parachute for president obama, just early retirement? he's got two more year oz, bob. what he is going to do next? >> the things you talk about are domestic u.s. issues and they should be dealt with. what are we going to do with afghanistan? why do we care? they beat the russians, the british. come on. >> you look to our border. that's what i'm saying. >> do you realize what today is? the 27th anniversary of ronald reagan's tear down the wall speech. look at it that way, tear down the wall making the world a safer place.

on the other hand, chuck hagel and president obama, i don't know what to do. >> you know what they did? they went on twitter to register their disapproval. the only strikes they approve of are on a keyboard. >> why do we have the responsibility to 0 take care of iraq and afghanistan in the first place? >> why do we have the responsibility to take care of anybody. >> except for ourselves. that's a better point. >> i think everybody is missing the point. the reason that you're there is to help protect america. that's my opinion. the fact that we have spent this segment talking about something that happened 12 years agoed totally gives president obama a pass on what he is responsible for in the last two years and what he is going to do four. that's what i think the discussion should be held and ho hopefully they will be held. >> i think the way the country is falling it will be continued. >> his incompetence has become his expertise. a skydiver made this pledge in 20 it 12. >> do you think you're done with

i tried to quit. along with support, chantix (varenicline) is proven to help people quit smoking. it's a non-nicotine pill. chantix reduced my urge to smoke. that helped me quit smoking. some people had changes in behavior, thinking or mood, hostility, agitation, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts or actions while taking or after stopping chantix. if you notice any of these, stop chantix and call your doctor right away. tell your doctor about any history of mental health problems, which could get worse while taking chantix. don't take chantix if you've had a serious allergic or skin reaction to it. if you develop these, stop chantix and see your doctor right away as some can be life-threatening. tell your doctor if you have a history of heart or blood vessel problems, or if you develop new or worse symptoms. get medical help right away if you have symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. use caution when driving or operating machinery. common side effects include nausea, trouble sleeping and unusual dreams. my quit date was my son's birthday. and that was my gift for him and me. ask your doctor if chantix is right for you.

paul, ted cruz in a second. but hillary clinton turned some heads by going tougher on illegals than you'd expect from a liberal. >> eric cantor the second ranking republican in the houses who was defeated by a candidate who basically ran against immigrants. his argument was this, there are americans out of work so why should we allow immigrants into our country to take those jobs? and i think that's a fair question. >>rhea? surprising. >> at first i thought, what is she saying? earlier this week she was dead broke, then she couldn't remember who abe lincoln was, then she thought the five terrorists aren't going to be a threat. maybe she's out to lunch. but then i thought, this is classic clinton. she is planning to outflank everybody, even republicans on this. and this is the one thing she learned from her husband, and they do it very well. they're very skilled at this, especially in the '90s.
2:20 pm
they come up with an idea. they get republicans to come out in favor of it. then they go after the republicans, like well fare are reform. then when republicans pass it, they sign it and take credit for it. with immigration reform, i think what she's doing is looking at the polls, talking with her husband, and she is abandoning losing arguments. majority of the country a little nervous about this immigration reform bill. and they co-opt winning one. that's what the clintons are doing. they're very good at it. >> bob, you seem surprised she said that. do you think there's anything -- maybe karl rove. no. anyway, your thoughts on her comments. >> it's staggering to say that cantor lost because of immigration when every piece of data we have had nothing to do with immigration. how she could go out there and say that. i mean, maybe she wanted to flank people on immigration. >> how about where she stands on immigration, saying he may have been right on some of the --

>> i assume she's -- andrea is right. she's trying to move to the center. but the point is, you don't do that by citing wrong facts. i mean, that cantor example is just plain dumb. >> they've been citing wrong facts for decades. >> well, you know who she has advising her during the book tour. dude. remember dude? i don't know if the analysis is that sharp and being passed on to her. eric, i think she is repeating something that is poll tested and that they have realized that the american people on immigration are are looking at what is happening at the border and saying, we're not for that. i think they've got a little bit of nibble of what they thought might be something where she could get some support on a broad basis. that's why she said it. >> you want hillary? ted cruz? >> go ahead. let's do ted cruz who knows who

to blame, el presidente. listen. >> this is a humanitarian crisis, and it is the direct result of president obama's lawlessness and unwillingness to enforce the law. and president obama union laterally and illegally granting amnesty to 800,000 people here illegally who came as children. what it's prompted is parents throughout central and south america giving their young children, handing them over to the smugglers. it is horrific and it's because the president won't enforce the law. our hearts should be breaking and the answer is to start enforcing the law. >> greg? >> typical canadian. actually, it's interest gt. if you think about it that people who are fleeing here aren't coming from canada. they're coming -- they're leaving their home, which is hard to do because their homes are horrible. the good news is obama is going to make this country so bad that they're going to stop coming. i don't think this is a jobs

issue. i think -- to cite kevin williamson. it's not job. it's jihad. the border and baghdad are the same issue. and i think that's what's going to unite democrat and republican voters. when they're seeing this horrible thing unfold, these poor people en mass down there, this gives visualization to illegal immigration people didn't have before. this is telling people, damn, obama doesn't know what he's doing. >> can i just ask, this is important, bob. how did this all of a sudden happen? how do we have 50,000 or 60,000 kids coming across the border in buses? i spend a lot of time reading. this kind of snuck up on me what's going on? >> first of all -- it. >> they've been sent over to military bases. >> they think they're going to get amnesty, right? there's all this talk of giving amnesty to anchor babies. jay carney says the border is
2:24 pm
secure, again getting it wrong. that's why hillary is a genius. she hasn't weighed in on the debate so all she has to say is, no, we must secure the borders, then do some kind of piecemeal smart immigration reform 0 and she's outmaneuvered i would argue a lot of republicans. >> i make a point to ted cruz. when he said obama did not obey the law, not a single employer in his state, which is the largest employer of illegal, undocumented workers, has ever been tried under the reagan bill of immigration in '86. for ted cruz to stand there and blame obama, take care of your own people. i would bet you have contributors who hire imlegals all the time. you probably hire illegals and i like you teddy. >> can i read the tweet? i promised it in the tease. senator pushed back via twitter, my position is what it always has been -- real border security necessary before any reform.
2:25 pm
i will not let sloppy journalists reflect my position as amnesty. it is untrue. >> the reason this is happening is the world knows our flaw. we have a president wlo believes that borders are bilgotry, that having locks on your window is rude. >> they know! >> most of these 11 million or 12 million people got here in the last 30 years. can somebody explain to me why not one, as far as i know, employer who hires these people goes to jail? >> bob, you have admitted that immigration reform is a good way to secure the base of the democratic party. maybe that's another reason the doors aren't locked? >> we've got to go. birthday boy, george h.w. bush celebrates his 90th in one of the coolest ways possible, the former president has no fear and was out skydiving again today. you'll see it coming up. co: sometimes you don't know you need a hotel room
