was ready to take the next step in his reintegration process and so he's back on soil at brook army medical center in san antonio, texas. he is not expected to make any kind of public statement today and possibly not for the remainder of his treatment there. we expect bowe bergdahl will be reunited with his family in san antonio for the first time since he was captured by the taliban in june 2009. the obama administration swapped bergdahl for five taliban prisoners from gitmo on may 31 and bergdahl has been recuperating since june 1. bergdahl's back pay as a soldier on hold until the army determines why and how he was captured by the taliban. back to you all in new york. >> thank you very much. now he's back, he's going to get better and if there is music to be faced, he'll face the music. >> details are surfacing about why bergdahl did leave his platoon. we see this letter he allegedly sent to his

parents obtained by the daily beast. he says, quote, leadership was lacking. it was nonexistent. conditions were bad and looked to be getting worse for the ones actually risking their lives. if this letter makes it to the u.s.a., tell those involved in the investigation that there are more sides to the situation. please tell d.c. to wait for all evidence to come in. >> it's alleged that he wrote that. he was in captivity. >> he was in prison writing it. it is believed to be true. >> it is believed to be true. "daily beast" has it. we're sharing it with you. you know about the circumstances before, how angry a. people were who served with him, because they had to sacrifice so much to try to get him back. one of those weighed in last night after hearing about the letter. >> now we know that he deserted for a fact. he just admitted in these letters that he deserted. as far as his excuses go,

they still do not excuse his actions. it was all rough on everybody there. the rest of us were still in the same conditions he was, and we decided to uphold our oath and still fight for our fellow americans and not desert. >> now these two letters have been leaked to the "daily beast." clearly one is from his family. the other is addressed to father bob bergdahl. the other was addressed to the geneva red cross. clearly the family wants, before people make up their minds -- although most people have -- there is another side of the story. mr. bergdahl's side of the story is i had lousy leadership when i was over there. that may be the case, but there are a lot of people who have bad bosses but they don't walk off the job. keep in mind we know of at least six people who died. although on this program earlier this week we heard perhaps as many as 100 men and women died looking for mr. bergdahl who it is alleged deserted his post. >> i don't recall any

wording or even unsaid, okay nod in army code, in military code, in our national code where you can walk off and leave base and leave your fellow men and women behind. would this letter be true or not? those reasons are not indicated by our service men and women, not indicated to them, not indicated from them as valid reasons to leave your men and women behind. >> i just hope that the white house doesn't choreograph any testimony and any investigation. i just hope the army gets to do it themselves. therefore, i know justice will be served, and maybe he's going to be totally exonerated once he tells his side of the story. maybe he already has and hasn't shared it. have to update you on what else is happening in the middle east. iraq on the brink of collapse. >> it's crazy. we all thought that would happen once we left. we figured it would happen but not this sudden. >> the white house says there is no possibility of american troops on the ground despite the president saying he's not ruling anything out. brian, elisabeth, steve, back to you. >> our former navy pilot now working for fox news, we thank you very much. it is the big story. it is on the cover of all three of the new york papers today. iraq in ruin: u.s. eevacuates as key cities fall to al qaeda. hell is back. and even on the cover of the "gray lady" "the new york times" today, u.s. scrambles to help iraq fight off militants. isn't this curious, remember over the last couple of years we've been told by the president who made a campaign promise i'm going to pull everybody out of iraq, it looks like he did it prematurely. he didn't live up to his promise of more arms and a diplomatic surge.

now despite celebrating for years things like this, things are screwed up. here's a montage. >> we've ended combat missions. we are on track to remove the rest of the troops, bring them home by the rest of this year. in iraq we succeeded in our strategy to end the war. we're leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self--reliant mistake. who said ending the war was a mistake? i disagree. the war in iraq is over and we welcomed our troops home. we have removed our troops from iraq. we are winding down our war in afghanistan. >> perhaps blinded by his own happy dance there about success without following through, i mean everyone from officers to generals saying obviously we have a responsibility to build a governing system as we left it behind. those challenges are there. but they can't be accomplished in a matter of two or three years. >> there needs to be diplomatic pressure as well as a security presence for the u.s.

comparison? >> my reaction to this kpar spohn is that it's all -- comparison is it is all about presidential priorities. in this case the influx of illegal immigration seems to be planned at military bases. while at the same time, and they do a lot of that through the infamous pen and the phone. the v.a., we've heard scandal after scandal after scandal. where's the pen and phone with the v.a.? where is the priority of the president to say i'm going to move heaven and earth to make sure veterans aren't waiting 90 days. 57,000 waiting 90 days. that's hundreds and hundreds of thousands of veterans who earned care and can't get it. yet all the president does is hold a press conference, say he's going to look into it, doesn't take decisive action. >> in congress senator sanders and senator mccain are coming

together that will have a private element for the v.a. coming forward. are you optimistic? >> i am. that bill includes accountability so leaders can be fired and choice, a choice for a veteran who can't get timely care to go to a physician. the house has even better language. we hope it will improve the mccain-sanders bill more to make sure it is a pure choice bill but it will be an important thing for vets going forward. >> pete, you served a year in iraq. you understand the same reports we're getting. these terrorists are now 50 miles from baghdad. they've taken about seven major cities. what's your reaction? >> it's infewer -- infuriating to watch all we fought so hard for to build to be given away by a commander in chief who, frankly, brian, i don't think cares about the fact that these things are happening. we care. i care. the guys who serve there care.

that is the plane arriving from germany that contains bowe bergdahl. the sergeant is now back after rehabbing to a degree emotionally and physically after almost five years in captivity. he is now in san antonio, texas, where there are currently no plans for him to meet with the press. but he'll be at the brook army medical center. >> arriving by ambulance there and expected to be reunited with his family for the first time since he was captured five years ago. >> you know, a couple of days ago during one of those hearings up on capitol hill, the question was why hasn't -- why is he still in germany? medical personnel in germany determined bergdahl was now ready to take the first steps in his

radio todd starnes joins us here. good morning. fantastic book. when you see the cases that are increasing here where christian groups are being discriminated against on college campuses just seems like this could not be happening but in fact they are. you're going to take us through three examples. >> the first, sonoma state university in california where a young lady audrey jarviv whom i write about in my book, audrey wore a cross around her neck, she is a catholic student. she was told by her supervisor, she was a student worker on campus and the supervisor said you can't wear that cross necklace because it might offend other students. you have to take that off. when she refused she was threatened with her job at the university. attacks on her became so severe she ended up leaving the school. she is now at a catholic school in the san diego area where she is allowed to wear the cross. >> university of michigan,

another example. >> there is a christian ministry called inner varsity fellowship. there are groups all across the country on many, many college campuses. know what? you have to sign our antidiscrimination policy. here's what the antidiscrimination policy said. you cannot require people to be christian leaders of your organization. in other words, if an atheist wants to be the leader of your group, you have to at least consider that individual or else you're going to be discriminating against atheists. intervarsity said we're not going to do it so the school said you cannot be an officially recognized group, got kicked off campus. >> they are no longer an official group. unbelievable. vanderbilt. >> a private school again, private schools can do whatever they want to do but they have a deep religious history at that school. again, they have an antidiscrimination policy and that policy very similar to the university of michigan, more than a dozen student groups had to leave the campus, including

evidence to come in. what do you think about this? >> first of all, i don't know whether it's true or not. doesn't seem to be anybody else deserted. you have a lot of soldiers testifying against him saying he deserted. he certainly was at least awol if not a deserter. nobody else seems to have done it and they were in the same unit. so i don't know how much of a defense that's going to be. and is isn't a defense at all. you can't say, i'm going to desert because i don't like the conditions of my unit. >> my boss stinks. i'm leaving. >> but how about in the time of war? first of all, conditions in units in times of war are always stressful. if you allowed this as a defense, half the unit could walk out. >> benefit of the doubt has been given to him, but not those who have given their testimony of being there right with him in the platoon. why? >> i'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but at a minimum, he walked away, which he's awol. maximum he's a desert. somebody has to figure that out. he's got to be put on trial of some sort. he's got to have a court-martial

of some sort to figure out why he left. if it's awol, that's one punishment. >> as we see iraq, all our hard work and incredible war effort and the surge go to pieces, as we think about those five taliban that are going to be taking back -- trying to take back afghanistan, is america okay with giving -- to figure out what the president was think to go give these five people back knowing afghanistan will be under tremendous stress and some kind of internal conflict. >> he wants to close gitmo one guy at time. >> it should be a lesson for him. he put his political objectives ahead of national security in deciding to run away in iraq. basically he snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. biden was unable to negotiate the status of forces agreement, which was a tremendous failure. no one focuses on. probably the key to this all falling apart. >> only talked to them twice in nine months. >> we left nobody behind. we were proposing too small a force anyway. it was obvious the president

wanted to cut and run in iraq and now is this is what happened. if he does the same thing in afghanistan, we're going to be back to pre-september 11 situation in afghanistan with the taliban controlling or at least having a lot of control. >> is it too late for the president to make up his mind and do something? >> it's never too late. you've got two candidates for president in afghanistan, both who fought the taliban. imagine what they're thinking when they fought the taliban and the guys they were fighting have now been released and within one year, they can be back fighting them again. >> no one talks about the right hand man to massood -- >> it isn't as if he gave -- >> he gave them the war council. >> yeah. according to mukasey, who oversaw guantanamo bay, they're the five worst people there. everybody else is downhill after this. >> have you heard that the guy who is leading this terrorist army, the isis leader, the united states had him. he was at camp buka in iraq. the obama administration released all the prisoners.

he's back and now he's back in the terror group. that's what happens to these guy. >> releasing these five people, don't discount the fact that this increased the morale of these people. the reality is they now realize that some of their key people will be back to help them, assuming qatar is able to keep them there for the next year. they could be back faster. >> why would hillary clinton say, not a big deal. they're only dangerous in afghanistan, pakistan. not here, not the globe. why would she say that? >> afghanistan is where they plotted the september 11 attack against us. something dangerous in afghanistan and pakistan can be very, very dangerous for us. i don't know why she's saying that. it reminds me of her statement about benghazi, you know, what does it matter? what does it matter that four americans are dead? it always matters. >> the president has been wrong. he told us it was okay to leave that country, iraq, because everything was safe. he told us over and over. it was wrong. he's on tape saying it a lot.

>> we've removed 100,000 troops from iraq. we've ended combat missions. we are on track to remove the rest of the troops. bring them home by the end of this year. in iraq, we've succeeded in our strategy to end the war. we're leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant iraq. ending the war was a mistake, i disagree. bring our troops home was the right thing to do. the war in iraq is over and we welcomed our troops home. we have removed our troops from iraq. we are winding down our war in afghanistan. >> what do you think? >> to me, this was predictable in what he was saying. all of this pointed out, this is putting your political objectives ahead of national security, ahead of what is in the best interest of the united states, what's in the best interest of keeping the world secure. i think in terms of the president's legacy is going to be one of the blackest marks against him. he was handed in iraq that was finally moving in the right direction, he turned it all the

way around. >> by his own estimate, he said that, here is what i find unbelievable. in sports you have a final score. if you go back to that debate, mitt romney nailed him on this. he should have left the 10,000 men force. he said no, we're not going to get bogged down with 10,000 troops in iraq. mitt romney nailed him. >> but the mistake happened before that. first of all, 10,000 wasn't enough. it should have been 25, 30,000 left hyped. after we secured iraq, we should have kept it secure. by doing that, we delivered maliki to iran. you have these rebels against maliki and you have maliki who basically is working for iran. so there is no good situation there. all of this caused by his inability to understand why we should remain there. >> the heartbreaking thing is all of the bloodshed and all of the treasure we invested in iraq and all the war games now gone. >> and all of it could have been avoided by the right decisions at the right time by a president who was putting national security ahead of his own political objectives. >> it's all great to have you join us on the curvy couch.

what do military and how do you feel about him being back in the united states. >> i have to look at it aside from all of these things that we've been hearing about bergdahl. i just have to kind of look at him as an american soldier. over the past five years i've been watching him, seeing these videos that we're getting of him, not knowing all the circumstances. we still don't know all the circumstances. i can't help but feel like he's an american soldier. let's bring him back and then let's figure out what happened. >> sure. >> what about the patient-doctor confidentiality when it comes to physicians but not any sort of psychologist or psychiatrist that someone may see? what are your feeling on that if he's revealing something that he may not be able to share and they may actually relate to why he left in the first place, do you think there should be that confidentiality? >> that's a good question. you mentioned i was a pilot, i was has human intelligence officer serving in afghanistan. so i can't help but look at this from an intelligence

perspective. so in this reintegration process, he'll be speaking with doctors, psychologists, whole group of different people and he'll be speaking with intelligence officers. so if people in the military can't speak to a psychologist and feel that is between them, i think there would be a lot of problems. people with ptsd being afraid to get help. but what he says to the doctors, that's going to be fair game. i think hopefully we'll get intelligence value out of the debriefing process. >> whatever he says to his doctors is fair game, but whatever he says to a psychiatrist or psychologist, that's just between him and the doctor? >> right. and like i was saying, there are people in the military now who need help and i think if people think that everything they said would be fair game legally, they wouldn't get the help they needed. >> one of those things is that it seemed he could not finish boot camp with the coast guard and went into the army and into the infantry, one of the most stressful things. i'm curious about that area. how did that take place? >> that's a very good question. i think a lot of people will be

looking into that right now. there is that military investigation that has already taken place that's been closed book that we don't know what is said. i'm hoping some of the information will come out and we'll be able to learn more about his background and how he came to where he was when this all happened. >> based on your own experience, is there ever a reason someone would leave base that would be okay with their platoon? >> there is never a good reason. in my perspective, it's my opinion, i cannot think of a good reason why you would leave base. we don't know what was in his head. the only person who knows what was in bowe bergdahl's head when he left was him and i'm hoping that at some point we'll find out what that was. >> plus his family. >> the story out this morning is the daily beast got their hands on a couple of letters that he reportedly wrote while in captivity, while he was at the hands of the taliban or haqqani network and says it was just rough. bad leadership. not a good excuse. >> no, it's not a good excuse. but i will tell think again from an intelligence perspective, anything that's sent from him while he was in captivity is something that could be

the kurds have taken action. when is the president going to do something, do you think? >> i don't know. and the fact that he's talking about deliberating now indicates how flat footed he and the administration were caught by this. there was also a spokesman for the pentagon talking about arm sales of f-16s to iraq next fall. my gosh, this terrible group, and we have to put it in context. two violent -- too violent for al-qaeda, iraq and syria. again, too violent for al-qaeda, and you saw on that map you showed at the beginning, that swath of northern and western iraq that they have taken, how close they are now to the capitol of baghdad. again, look at that map. that's all under the control of this group, isis. what a foothold that is in the center of the middle east for the worst of the worst and the potential safe haven for people who could not only cause violence through the middle east, but also could be hatching plots against the u.s. homeland.

fox news alert. sergeant bowe bergdahl back on american soil, landing overnight in texas. kriv reporter andrea watkins is live at brook army medical center in san antonio where bergdahl is now and we don't know when we're going to see him. what is the latest? i hear there might be a presser. >> reporter: well, we're hoping so because there has been absolutely nothing so far today. we have been out here at least one of the main entrances to army medical center and we haven't seen any indication that he did get into the hospital. we do know, though, that they landed at lackland air force base probably we know 1 and 2 this morning, had to wait for bad thunderstorm to pass. after he landed at lackland, photographers were able to get a little bit of a glimpse of that.

he was driven then to brook army medical center. this is where he's going to probably spend weeks reintegrating from the war zone to life in the united states here. this is a special team of experts here at brook army medical center. they are specially trained to treat mental health issues that the soldiers have coming back from battlefields. also from the taliban captors and the ordeal he's gone through just being in captivity. the same psychologist that he has been working with all along ever since his release traveled with him here to san antonio to continue his care. his care is really all the military wants to focus on. they don't want to discuss whether or not there is going to be any investigation or when the investigation is going to happen or if there is going to be a court-martial. they said it's just time right now to focus on his care and healing. they did say one thing about his legal status, brian. and they said that he would have
