6:00 am
>> they are unbelievable umbrella fans. they were rock out to your song. we see your album up there. >> she'll do songs in the after the show show. have a great weekend. see you back here monday. bill: a fox news alert. bowe bergdahl is back in the u.s. and we expect press conference today. questions remain about the circumstances surrounding his capture. we have a lot of questions and wonder if we'll see him today. happy friday. >> reporter: after landing bergdahl was quickly escorted into an ambulance and taken into the brooks army medical center in and antonio.
6:01 am
bill: casey, why was he brought there to this facility? report there ara -- >> reporter: this is a specialized unit. it stands for personal recovery coordination cell. we understand that team is specifically trained in helping soldiers reintegrate back into civilian life. this is one of the most high profile cases they worked with, but they do this all the time. the staff is comprised of medical doctors, counselors and psychologists. we are told the prcc has been rehearsing this very moment since sergeant bergdahl went missing five years ago. every 6 months or so they have been brushing up their skills for the time they got the call he had been released. now that has happened and they
6:02 am
have sprung into action. he's being evaluated off my shoulder inside the building. the psychologist who has been treating him from the beginning traveling with him on that flight from germany to texas overnight. bill: has he spoke on his family? has he met with his family? what do we know about senate. >> reporter: we don't know if he has spoke on his families. if his parents are already here, the military is being very mum about that. they are emphasizing that is no time line set. everything is based on the patient's needs. the patient here, sergeant bowe bergdahl, every one moves at different speeds. there is a family component this phase of the reintegration. that would be a reunion with his parents. at what point that will happen
6:03 am
remains to be seen. another big question on the mind of an awful lot of americans. how will an investigation play out now that he's stateside into these possible desertion allegations. all of that information is still unclear at this hour. it could come out at this press conference and likely we won't go that for quite some time. >> reporter: some of bergdahl's former platoon members are reacting to a letter he reportedly sent to his family while in captivity where he cited booed leadership and poor living conditions as to why he deserted his post. >> he just admitted he deserted. it was rough on everybody there. the rest of us were tblt same conditions he was and we decided to uphold our oath and fight for
6:04 am
our fellow americans and not desert. can. bill: at the bottom of this hour rob whit man who sits on the house armed services committee. he will answer these questions, too. a bit later what the up s. army has learned about reintegration based on the vietnam war and how they are applying it to bergdahl. >> reporter: iraq under siege. islamic militants capturing two more towns east of baghdad and now sitting on the steps of the capital. the exodus from the northern city of mosul is in full swing.
6:05 am
and half a million iraqis are fleeing. the terrorists vow to create a new islamic state in the heart of the arab world. are the militants unstoppable at this point? >> reporter: the militants are beginning to try to and promising to push into baghdad while the iraqi military is vowing to defend the city. we are seeing fighters from isis consolidate outside of baghdad. there is a martial law being instituted there. people are beginning to flee out of fever an upcoming assault. leaders are calling on volunteer to the defend the country. reportedly thousands of shiite muslims have answered the call but they are untrained and likely ill equipped. the iraqi army is literally fleeing.
6:06 am
they are leaving equipment to be taken by the militants. the country is literally collapsing before our eyes. >> reporter: is iraq splitting apart among ethnic and religious lines? >> reporter: the sunni muslims in the western part of the country have been welcoming with open arms the militants coming in from syria while the iraqi government which is dominated by the shiite population has been calling on supporters to defend baghdad. we are also seeing the pro american kurds in the north take advantage of all this chaos and they have taken control of kirkuk which is an important oil city. we are hearing reports a top iranian general was in baghdad meeting with nouri al-maliki. iran and the shiite government in iraq have ties.
6:07 am
if we see iran get involved in this this country may split even further. bill: house speaker john boehner had words blasting the president and the administration who hailed iraq as a foreign policy success but has been ignoring the problems. >> it am not like we haven't seen the problem coming for the last year and we haven't seen the last five or six months these terrorists moving in taking control of western iraq. now they have taken control of mosul. they are 100 mile from baghdad. what's the president doing? taking a nap. bill: boehner says what's napping iraq is more evidence of the president's famed policies that are endangering our troops and citizens. >> reporter: the islamic state of iraq and syria was formed in april of last year.
6:08 am
it grew out of iraq's affiliate organization. al qaeda's affiliate organization in iraq but was considered too extreme even for al qaeda. its leader is considered by many analysts to be one of the most dangerous terrorists in the the world. he's known as the new bin laden. the syrian civil war has been a gift to many terror groups helping them recover from recent setbacks. the islamic hold of the state of iraq and syria are in northern and eastern syria and northern iraq. the group is active in recruitment, paying $200 a month to militants to join their cause. bill: tough questions for the white house as the situation there deteriorates. press secretary jay carney asked about the white house claim that al qaeda was december made it. >> it has unquestionably been
6:09 am
severely come pro mietds and decimated. >> reporter: equally dangerous or even more dangerous to have an al qaeda-linked group in control of major cities than have them in the mountains of pakistan? >> the most severe military attack on the united states in our lifetime occurred -- was organized and ordered out of afghanistan and pakistan by core al qaeda. bill: byron york, good morning to you. the question was about the two signature achievements iraq and afghanistan. how do they answer that? >> the jay carney statement show the white house is stuck in 2008. you have to look at the campaign in which president obama became president. his whole point on that part of the world is the united states took its eye off the ball by
6:10 am
invading iraq and should have concentrated on afghanistan and pakistan and if elected president he would get us out of iraq and concentrate on afghanistan and pakistan. what you saw yesterday with the president expressing frustration with sending u.s. troops to play whack-a-mo. bill: chris wallace made the point they were caught flat footed with little or no preparation for something like this. but you make the point that al qaeda morphs. they are like cockroaches and go where vat accumulation is. the administration did not have a plan to deal with that he involving scenario. >> that's right. al qaeda is like an opportunist
6:11 am
infection. it doesn't have to stay in afghanistan as the administration apparently hoped. it can move and certainly in the unrest in iraq and sirrate seized that opportunity. so this is something the president is understandable he doesn't want to face this but it's just a reality that it has spread. when you attack it in one place it will spread to a didn't place. bill: it's remarkable how quickly this is moving. this is like come knows. a lot more analysis throughout the day. >> reporter: it's moving quickly. as iraq spierls out of control one retired general saying the country was in jeopardy the second we left. >> it's like a house and it looks good but the fact of the matter is if you push on it hard it will collapse. >> reporter: general jack keane is here and why he he we
6:12 am
created a vacuum in iraq that led to the chaos today. bill: hillary clinton on a book tour but rush limbaugh slamming her for what she said about the taliban five. why he says those words from her could come back to haunts her. >> reporter: the problem of illegal immigrants pouring across our southern border is at an all-out crisis. thousands of women and children and no place to put them. >> reporter: the word is spreading rapidly it's pretty much a free pats wait system is set up at this time. woman: this is not exactly what i expected. captain obvious: this is a creepy room. man: oh hey, captain obvious. captain obvious: you should have used hotels.com. their genuine guest reviews are written by guests who have genuinely stayed there. instead of people who lie on the internet.
6:13 am
captain: here's a review, it's worse in person.

6:17 am
ring our hand now we'll fight them later. explain. >> we have the regional stillover war from syria that's predicted. isis owns territory in syria and now significant territory in iraq. a radical islamic caliphate forming in the middle east. if we don't stop their advance and try to initiate a counter offensive to purchase them back while we have the opportunity, while we c the foothold in truck to do that now and apply military force now, we'll have to fight them later. why? this will cause regional instability to the middle east for certain. number two, it will threaten security in europe and threaten security in the united states. i'm not talking about indirect security. this is radical islamists who have clear designs on destroying
6:18 am
our way of life and these people want to kill us. and we have to clearly understand what this threat is all about. bill: i want to show our viewers a map. i know you know this all too well from syria in damascus. there is a city called aleppo. if you start in the northwest corner of syria down through mosul that fell wednesday and tikrit that fell the following day and you have fallujah and baghdad and you fill that in where the terrorists, the isis is in control, that's an enormous piece of territory. our saying is if you don't do something now to stop this, what looking do is turn to iran. because the leader in iraq is shiia and he will go to iraq for support and help. what happens then? >> the fact of the matter is, the iranians look at syria as their client state.
6:19 am
they have done much to prop up syria and help assad hold on to power. they will pull out all the stops to keep the shiia part of iraq in iraqi hand. and that means well pour in their quds force. general saohany. and i think that portends ill for the stability of the middle east to have iraq become a client state of iran. the fact of the matter is that iran will not do much about isis holding territory and land in syria obviously and also in iraq. they will pretty much leave that alone. they will push back on the sunnies and conduct some cleansing operations. cleanse can is a euphemism for
6:20 am
killing people. it will enlarge the conflict toward a civil war and sectarian conflict for sure. but the fact of the matter is, there are two danger points in front of us. one is this radical islamist caliphate and iraq becoming a client state of iran. bill: the viewers are asking a lot of questions. why should the u.s. intervene in iraq's civil war between sunnis, shiites and kurds. i think you pretty much answered that. what does the president do? >> the fact of the matter is, there need to be a sense of urgency here. put aside what caused this problem and just deal with what's in front of us. maliki need a set of eyes he doesn't have, that's intelligence. we need to give him that
6:21 am
capability. that means technological capability so he can help see. that's satellite wnsa seefs dropping, surveillance and dropping drones. he also need coordinated air power to conduct operations with his ground forces. we provided air power to help the libyans push against qaddafi. this is iraq, this writes we had a stake for 8 years. this is a country of strategic consequence. he also need some people to help him think through the problem. i would put general petraeus on an airplane, let him gets over there and provide some advice to al-maliki and provide some advice. otherwise you will have solomoni in there.
6:22 am
billarthel: disturbing informatn about the five taliban detainees released in exchange for for army sergeant bowe bergdahl. we are learning one of them may have played a lead in the 911 attacks.

6:25 am
bill: hans solo needs some help from the force. he suffered an injury while filming. it involved a door slamming down on his ankle. arthel: a man hunt in phoenix after a deadly attack inside a catholic church. a priest shot and killed and another badly injured. do the police have any suspects?
6:26 am
>> reporter: not yet, arthel. one of the priests, the on survivor of the attack was able to indicate was an unknown white male. that priest beaten so badly in the attack he's been have much in critical condition since wednesday night. we understand his condition is now stable. however, the police calling for witnesses to come forward because they have no information on who might have perpetrated this. the two priests who shot the mother of mercy mission, one of the priests who was 29 years old died at the scene. we understand his colleague was able to administer the last -- the last rites. arthel: you have got to wonder how the community is holding up. this has to have an effect on them. reporter: a combination of horror and disbelief.
6:27 am
these were two popular priests. it was 29-year-old kenneth walker and 56-year-old father joseph terra. it was terra who was able to administer the last rights to walker. weep believe this was terra's typical sort of character in helping people. this is how one of the fathers at the mercy mission describes him. >> reporter: father terra is a strong man and he's not afraid of anybody. if somebody came and asked him for something he would give it to him, the shirt off his back. >> reporter: a vigil held thursday night. arthel: thanks were dominic. bill: in the dark of night sergeant bowe bergdahl flew back into texas. how soon will we get answers? we expect a press conference on
6:28 am
behalf of the u.s. military today. >> reporter: the growing crisis on our southern bored as thousands of immigrant children even enter the country with no place to go. >> it created a perception around the world that we are wide open that children can just come and they will be permitted to stay. crestor lowered bad cholesterol in it's a fact. high-risk patients more than lipitor. bad cholesterol... you're going down!
6:29 am
yeah! lowering cholesterol is a big deal, especially if you have high cholesterol plus any of these risk factors, because you could be at increased risk for plaque buildup in your arteries over time. so, when diet and exercise aren't enough to lower cholesterol, adding crestor can help. i'm down with crestor! crestor is not right for everyone, like people with liver disease or women who are nursing, pregnant, or may become pregnant. tell your doctor about other medicines you're taking. call your doctor right away if you have muscle pain or weakness, feel unusually tired; have loss of appetite, upper belly pain, dark urine or yellowing of skin or eyes. these could be signs of rare but serious side effects. are you down with crestor!? ask your doctor if crestor could help you. if you can't afford your medication, astrazeneca may be able to help.

bill: in the southwest tens of thousands of illegals many of them children crossing tint u.s. with no adults. the federal government packing them into crowded facilities in places like phoenix, arizona. the surge of children expected to get worse. are border authorities able to get a handle on the problem yet, will, or not. >> reporter: authorities tell us this is getting worse and worse every day. these immigrants from flooding into the united states from central america and they really overwhelmed the border patrol in the rio grande valley part of texas. then they are sent to arizona where we have new video from the post that show you have the conditions that these kids are in right now. through may 47,000 children have crossed the border. that's double as many that crossed all of last year. many border authorities say the immigrants believe if they can get into the u.s., they won't be
6:33 am
deported. >> the word is spreading rapidly it's unchecked and it's pretty much a free pass the wait system is set up at this time. >> reporter: arizona governor jan brewer calling on lawmakers and president obama to do something about this problem immediately. bill: what is the administration saying and doing? >> home landlord secretary jeh johnson says he has reached out to the countries in central america. he's trying to figure out how to return these kid quickly. but he admits if a child's parents are already in the united states legally it's his top priority reunite that family on this side of the borderer. >> hhs acts in the best interests of the child which often means reuniting that child with a parent. that's what the law requires.
6:34 am
arthel: bow berg cas -- bowe bergdahl is back in the u.s. emface questions from investigators and lawmakers. what exactly do they want to know? republican congressman rob whitman from virginia is a member of the house armed services committee. good morning. i want to start with what do your congressional colleagues want to know? >> we are anxious to have the army do the analysis of what led to sergeant bergdahl's capture. what happened prior to that. we are concerned about making sure we understand what led up
6:35 am
to that. we want to make sure we get the information so we understand the full con next which they made a decision to exchange sergeant bergdahl for these five high value taliban detainees. we want to do everything we can to get our members of the military back and we want to understand how the decisions are made with the risk associated with these detainees potentially returning back to the battlefield and even dane dangering afghans and americans. arthel: what do you think he could tell authorities in terms of what happened and in terms of negotiations to get him back on american soil ultimately. >> hopefully there will be intelligence he could share about his time there, intelligence that would be valuable to the united states. that's part of their process in debriefing sergeant bergdahl to make sure we are continuing our effort to decrease the taliban's ability to perpetrate violence
6:36 am
and destruction against americans and those forces out there that are sympathetic to america. arthel: there will be a psych evaluation. how much should that determine how quickly they begin to grill bergdahl? >> it's a fragile situation. we want to make sure we get him back to a state where he can communicate with us about the things he has gone through. that's a careful process they will go through to make sure they evaluate his full manhattannal health state so we can be most productive in understanding the circumstances surrounding his capture. what happened during this time of deception and potentially now what he can divulge to us from that time in captivity. arthel: what if sergeant bergdahl is determined mentally unstable? >> that's something that we'll have to determine once that point is reached. i think it's premature to
6:37 am
determine what might happen from that particular standpoint. it would impact what information we might be able to obtain from him. to be most productive in getting useful information from him. >> reporter: after the questions are answered what's the next step? >> the next step is to make sure we determine how this decision was made in the full context of the risk associated with the united states. one of the concerns i have is why did they determine that these five taliban prisoners were the ones they were going to exchange for sergeant bergdahl. about it administrations own evaluation they said these five detainees should not be released and the conditions under which they should be released were not clear. we know the country they were released to in 2008, a detainee was sent to qatar and qatar was
6:38 am
asked to detain them under certain conditions and they didn't follow those conditions. arthel: i want to jump in with this final point and ask you. i see where you are going with the information you are trying to glean from what sergeant bergdahl may tell them. does he have access to what happened in negotiations? i wonder if he will have those answers. >> i don't know. i'm certain he doesn't at this particular point. but we want to make sure from our standpoint in how we evaluate the decisions that went into this why this was in the up s. best long term interest and why we weren't endangering americans elsewhere by releasing these five taliban leaders we know have associations with the haqqani network and al qaeda. that's the important thing to understand how that determination was made. that i think is the crux of the issue. arthel: understood. thank you so much for your time.
6:39 am
bill: hillary clinton saying those five detainees are not threat to the united states. that got rush limbaugh all fired up. arthel: islamic militants pushing toward baghdad as city after city falls in iraq. is the white house running out of options? >> it's alarming how quickly things are changing out there. book any flight or hotel and if you find it for less, we'll match it and give you 50 dollars off your next trip expedia, find yours so i can reach ally bank 24/7 but there are24/7branches? i'm sorry- i'm just really reluctant to try new things. really? what's wrong with trying new things?

arthel: donald sterling is apparently not going down without a fight. the attorneys for the clippers have hired investigators to look into the background of the form and current commissioners of the nba. the nba banned stirling after he was caught on tape making racist remarks. bill: rush limbaugh with some harsh words for hillary clinton after the remarks she made regarding the five taliban gitmo detainees that were released that they aren't a threat to the united states. >> to me this will come back to haunt her. to me it's proof this woman is neither smart nor competent. bill: juan williams has reaction
6:44 am
to that and mary katharine ham. how the two of you doing? come back to haunt hillary clinton. i know a lot of people are making a big deal out of the senator lincoln comments. but this little thing right here about these five taliban commanders goes to policy and how you interpret decisions made by the administration. mk, what do you think about this? >> i think on substance when you are asked are neese these guys a threat, as a politician is it smart to say something that's not definitively no? something could be a threat and come back to haunt you as rush limbaugh suggests. i want to make a separate point stylistically. people have to be careful how they talk about hillary clinton. if you go too far in criticizing her as a woman candidate and the media gets mad about that you will nullify all of the actual real criticisms of her. so i think you have to have a
6:45 am
light touch. this week showed she ain't all that good pat politics. -- not that good at politics. bill: juan, what do you think of this? >> it comes in a week when she said they were dead broke when they left the white house and that set off conservative blowings. blowing -- conservative blogs. i think what he's trying to do is deflate a balloon. what he said later in that monologue was hillary clinton is supposed on the brightest woman ever, the most competent woman therefore she can be president and he wants to take down that whole structure right now. that's what this is about. bill: let's listen to the comment from hillary clinton. today the show, nbc with cynthia mcfadden. >> these five guys are not a
6:46 am
threat to the united states. they are a threat to the safety and security of afghanistan and pakistan. it's up to those two countries to make the decision once and for all that these are threats to them. bill: i want to hang on these word. this is important. the taliban harbored al qaeda. that's where usama bin laden went. these five guys are not a threat to the united states, they are a threat to the safety and security of afghanistan and pakistan, it's up to those two countries to make the decision these have threats to them. who tops say with all this movement across iraq and the future for afghanistan being so much up in the air mk at these guys don't go back, make they are commanders of the next taliban army. >> nobody is capable as far as i can tell of predicting exactly what might happen in the middle east at any given moment, including our national security team which is very concerning.
6:47 am
but as a political decision, it's not smart to rule out that these guys might be dangerous as a policy decision. it's not smart to rule out the possibility that these guys might be dangerous. as far as hillary goes, i don't think we can fault her for the wealth question. she has had almost 8 years to get ready for this. shunned she be ready with this stuff? guan i thinstuff? >> i think this is a start. i think the darts are coming from almost every direction. bill: do you think she had a good week? >> i think she had a good week in terms of exposure and getting out there and people are asking tough questions and guess what? that leads to usth have this segment and have more attention for hillary clinton. bill: mary katharine do you
6:48 am
think she has had a good week these interviews? >> i'm not sure electorally it will matter in the end. i hope that's not the case. bill: why do you say that? >> i think she'll ride the wave of identity politics and she'll be treated well by the media after she gets through initial questioning. bill: what's the identity politics, being a woman? >> the messaging will be i'm the first woman and you better want to break this glass ceiling with me or else you hate women. anybody who discusses her or criticized her much like in the form of our criticisms of obama will be called sexist instead of racist. >> limbaugh said nobody is going to want to watch a woman age on tv if she's elected president. i think we already started it.
6:49 am
>> you already started it. >> when it comes to identity politics the roughest moment she may have had was on npr where they were asking about her lack [inaudible] bill: terry gross of npr is asking the questions and hillary clinton is answering the questions. listen. >> so that's one for you changed your mind. >> i have to say i think you are very persistent but you are playing with my word and playing with what is such an important issue. >> i'm frying to clarify. >> i don't think you are trying to clarify. i think you are saying i used to be opposed and now i'm in favor and i did it for political reasons and that's just flat wrong. let me state what you feel like you are implying and repudiate it. bill: juan, you brought it up.
6:50 am
>> there you can see her having to back pedal. a liberal asking her that question. that's not coming from the right. now you have the left going after hillary clinton and ultimately that's where she is vulnerable. if you get an elizabeth warren ... bill: okay. i have got to run. 5 seconds, mk. >> i hope we see more of it. way to go, carrie gross. arthel: how do you plan on celebrating your 90th birthday? if you are the former president george hw bush he jumps from an airplane. bill: a surprising plan on how to keep it from tumbling into the water. >> it could go tonight. we just don't know. nothing we can do.
