hot dogs, sausages, even pate. researchers in this study felt you shouldn't eat any processed meat. i think that's a little harsh. you go out to a nice restaurant and you see the salamis -- but it should be a once in a while treat. it's better to eat meats like a steak or something like that, a piece of veal. but you can't eat a lot of red meat if you're worried about your heart. >> it's a double-edged sword? >> it is. but i don't think you should alter your lifestyle dramatically unless you're one of those men who eats deli meats every single day. i would reduce it to once a week, maybe twice a week. >> disturbing news about diabetes. 29 million americans apparently have the disease. one in four don't know it, according to the centers for

disease control and prevention. how is that possible? what are the signs? >> one of the signs of diabetes is that you're urinating too frequently, you're drinking too much water. if you feel something is different or as changed in that respect, you should see your doctor. but you should be getting blood tests more frequently. you shouldn't have to wait for the signs of diabetes before you find out that there's a problem. so see your internist on a regular basis. if he or she says that you're becoming pre-diabetic, then he or she is going to give you guidelines. and the most important thing, though, is to keep a healthy lifestyle. what does that mean? eat right, exercise, okay? that doesn't mean that you'll prevent diabetes 100% because there are so many genetic factors. but it will help. >> the fact that one in four -- that's quite a number in this society. and the fact that so many people don't even know it is a real concern. >> it is a concern. but what you have to realize, the numbers are so high for a couple of reasons.

one reason is that our treatments for diabetics are vastly improved. so as diabetics, as any of us live longer, that increases the number. the second is one of the biggest causes of diabetes that we're worried about now is obesity. so if you're an individual and you know that your bmi is too high, one thing you can do is just reduce it or keep your body weight the same. and i don't think you need to worry greatly about it as long as you are seeing your doctor regularly, as long as you have made a commitment to healthier eating and more exercise. i don't think as bad as the numbers sound that it's going to be as dreadful. >> let's hope so. let's move forward in positive ways and see the doctor regularly if you have any inkling there might be some changes happening in your body like that. great advice, doctor. great to see you. thank you. >> you're welcome. i guess you could say our next report is from the fox

extreme weather center because this storm is high above the earth. some solar flares could come into contact with our planet today. the radiation isn't strong enough to harm humans but it can affect our digital devices. >> i spoke with a weather forecaster with noaa who says that if there is any impact, it will occur at higher latitudes, the northern lights may extend a little into canada today. and high frequency communications with airlines over remote areas could possibly be affected. but safety will not be an issue. nasa releasing these breathtaking images from space this week showing off the powerful bursts of radiation that look like fiery volcanic eruptions. a spokesperson with noaa says they work with the airline industry on a continual basis to
