until next time, i hope you're learning to be more of a healthy you. this is a fox news alert. civilians in baghdad bracing for a siege and joining militias to defend their city against the lightning advance of radical muslim insurgents from an al qaeda splinter group. hello, everyone. i'm arthel neville. so glad you could join us on this edition of "america's news headquarters." those militants are now closing in on baghdad. this is after taking over the northern cities of mosul and tikrit as well as nearly a third of the country earlier this week. meanwhile, kurdish fighters are now in complete control of a very strategic city, kirkuk, as a threat of all-out sectarian

war grows. conor powell has the latest. >> we're watching iraq splinter before our very guys as the country divides along ethnic and religious lines. and iran seems poised to jump into the conflict. today the iranian president says his country is ready to help. iraq's prime minister, nuri al maliki, is shiite and maintains strong ties with neighboring iran. many sunnis feel marginalized by the shiite-dominated government in baghdad. and a large sunni population in the western part of the country opening its arms to the isis group. they control fallujah, mosul, tikrit and only 60 miles outside of baghdad, their advance across iraq has slowed somewhat today. but baghdad is preparing for an assault. thousands of young iraqi shia

men in the capital lining up today to join the makeshift defense forces. but iraq's military is in shambles. they are fleeing instead of fighting and the government appears divided and somewhat inept. the rapid disintegration of the country of iraq, surprising not only everyone in the united states but around the entire middle east and the world. what comes next is anyone's guess. but things do not look like they're getting better anytime soon there. the country is rapidly disintegrated. >> conor, thanks so much for that update from our jerusalem bureau. president obama is in california this weekend, just wrapping up the commencement speech at the university of california at irvine. while the u.s. is not sending troops to bolster iraq's ' embattled government, they are considering intervening in the coming days. doug has more.

>> there are indications that iraqi forces made a strong defense of baghdad. young shiite men in the capital city have been flocking to military recruitment centers to join up. whether they can be mobilized into a fightliing force remainso be scene. they have been dropping your weapons and uniforms and fleeing. retired general jack keane says -- >> we're either going to deal with isis now or later given what they've done in iraq and in syria. we have to go after their sanctuaries and the lines of communications, the road networks that they're using to move their troops. all that is possible and very vulnerable to our air power in doing that. >> the president has said that the u.s.ip! must not allow isi gain another foothold in the

strategic region and says the option remains open with the exception of u.s. ground troops. >> my team is working around the clock to identify how we can r provide the most effective assistance to them. i don't rule out anything. >> secretary of state john kerry said on friday the u.s. is already providing enhanced aerial surveillance and has been ramping up shipments of military aid since the beginning of the year. today secretary of defense chuck hagel has ordered the george w. bush carrier battle group closer to iraq. it is in the arabian sea expected to arrive tonight. >> lawmakers are suggesting this was all preventable. tell us what they are saying. >> house speaker john boehner blasted the administration yesterday saying, quote, both the congress and the pentagon have been warning the white house about the worsening situation in iraq. but for months, it has done almost nothing.

president george w. bush who ordered the iraq invasion and later the surge has thus far remained silent about al qaeda's resurgence and the obama administration's response to it. >> doug, thanks so much. meanwhile, the united states could be getting an unlikely ally to combat terrorism in iraq. iran. both countries united by their common interest in repelling the advance of the sunni-aligned insurgents. iranian president hassan rouhani saying his government is ready to help the iraqi government saying it has no option but to confront terrorism. president rouhani saying he wants to reach a nuclear agreement with western powers by july 20th. this is another symbol of changing diplomacy are the u.s. in tehran. and government officials in yemen say a u.s. drone opened fire on a vehicle believed to be

carrying al qaeda militants killing all five passengers on board. officials say it happened in a mountainous area in the southern shabwah province. and a group of pro-russian separatists shooting down a ukraine military plane killing all 49 people on board. the plane was carrying equipment and food as well as personnel. the incident now underscoring questions about the rebels' access to military gear. the u.s. and ukraine have both accused russia of arming the separatists with tanks and rocket launchers. but russians deny it. the middle of the country now bracing for an outbreak of dangerous weather with the

threat of severe storms from west texas all the way to minnesota. the system is expected to bring large hail, damaging winds and possible tornadoes with a great risk for tornadoes occurring in the midwest. meanwhile, dry conditions could fuel new wildfires across the southwest with lightning storms expected to hit eastern new mexico. so be careful, guys. we are hearing the chilling 911 calls today made by the priest who survived a deadly shooting at a catholic church in phoenix. reverend joseph terra was critically injured in a suspected armed robbery. but police still aren't sure how many suspects were involved. another priest was shot and killed. dominic di-natale live with more. >> the reason they can't actually identify the perpetrator or perpetrators is that their one source of information about who actually did the attack is in a critical

condition in hospital. and that is indeed farther joseph terra. him a priest and also his assistant, it was father kenneth walker, aged 28 who was killed in that attack. it appears that the father terra received severe blows to the head in what appears to be some sort of bungled burglary. but as you can tell from the 911 call, this was a fatal attack happening. listen. >> my assistant priest here has been beaten. >> and right now he's beaten? >> yes. >> one person is unconscious? >> yes. >> is he breathing? >> no. >> and then in a frantic moment to save his life, father terra then performed cpr, given instructions by the 911 dispatcher on precisely how to do that. that didn't appear to help.

and so father terra administered the last rights to father walker. police say a manhunt is under way. >> we can say that this individual or individuals would be considered dangerous from the standpoint of how they brutally attacked father terra, the injuries that he sustained, the number of injuries he sustained almost to the point of death. >> looks like a brain injury there. and the motive at this time, absolutely unknown. possibly just a robbery. >> so senseless, dominic di-natale, thanks so much for that report. when we come back, we'll have a little bit of good news for you. we'll tell you where you have a shot at some free money. yeah, which city is hosting the hidden cash game this weekend and how you can get in on the action. plus, there's this, growing outrage after the irs telling

i know he spent three years at harvard law school. i would encourage and recommend to him that he sues harvard law school to get his tuition money back. i'm not sure what he learned while he was there. >> bergdahl was released on may 31st and he has since returned to the u.s. and is set to be reunited with his family when he sees fit. congressional investigators are now fuming over revelations that the irs has lost a vast number of e-mails tied to the agency's alleged targeting of conservative tea party groups. congressman darrell issa who is leading the investigation sent out this statement in response. here it is, quote, isn't it convenient for the obama administration that the irs now says it has suddenly realized it lost lois lerner's e-mails requested by congress and promised by commissioner john koskinen? do they really expect the american people to believe that

after having withheld these e-mails for a year. they're just now realizing the most critical time period is missing, end quote. betsy joins me now, hi. >> hey, there. >> it is hard for some people to grasp that it's possible to lose e-mails in this day of high technology. >> absolutely. and on top of that, the federal records act is in place. specifically so that federal records like this won't disappear, for example, if a computer crashes. there's law already on the books making it so that this isn't supposed to happen. and sources that i spoke with earlier said it's possible someone in the irs violated this law by failing to back up lois lerner's e-mails. >> is that it? is that the end of the story? or is there another avenue to get access to lois lerner's e-mails, maybe the suggestion of retrieving some of the recipient's e-mails? >> that certainly seems like

it's within the realm of possibility. and given the energy with which chairman issa and the committee have investigated this, it's safe to assume they'll go down every avenue possible to find these e-mails. but the fact that the irs has been so uncooperative has probably not helped their case very much. >> so then you have commissioner koskinen, will he come under fire for perhaps not being able to deliver the request that congress made? >> commissioner koskinen certainly has a credibility problem. he's not making any friends on the oversight and government reform committee. he's not making friends with any of the congressional committees investigating this. and i think it's very likely he'll be criticized much more in the future over the fact that these really important documents just vanished into thin air. >> you've got viewers watching this, people saying, wait a minute, the irs can't find information? they certainly can find information on me when they need to. so how is that possible? that's going to get the ire up of americans and i can't imagine

that congress and those trying to forge this investigation is going to say, okay, that's it. i don't know, criminal charges could follow? >> depending. it's certainly within the realm of possibility. and it definitely strains the credulity that the irs lost this information. and we learned a few days ago that the irs gave an enormous trove of confidential information to the fbi. so either the irs is losing information that's bad for it or it's giving other federal agencies confidential information that it's not authorized to turn over. it's bad news after bad news. >> betsy, i have to leave it there. but good to see you. >> thanks for having me. coming up, jetblue coming under fire with one mother saying the airline treated her and her children like animals. >> it wasn't about bad customer service at that point. it was just about bad human decency. she was sitting in a pool of urine and i couldn't do anything about it. as a mom, it just broke my
