>> fox news urgent, terrorist fighters are carving a horrific path across iraq. all along the way the al qaeda spin-off group are posting graphic pictures as they round up people for executions. they were just a few miles outside the city of baghdad. and remembering casey case kay sem tonight. this is the fox report. i'm harris faulkner. we begin tonight with our top story that is breaking this hour with what could be a tipping point in iraq. we are getting new reports now, yet another town has fallen into

the hands of brutal terrorist fighters and may sound familiar to you. tal afar. that battle went on for 2000 days -- two two days. iraq's mill has launched a counteroffensive with air strikes as they try to stop the group of sunni islamic militants, isis. it controls a large swath of territory, spanning from eastern syria all the way to baghdad. some brutal images are now emerging from that area. some of those images are graphic. terrorist fighters are lining up

personnel and executing them. fueling all of this, sectarian tensions of generations. there's military checkpoints throughout the city there and the u.s. state department is announcing security is being stepped up and some staff are being moved out of our u.s. embassy there in baghdad to other cities in the country and maybing -- maybe -- neighboring jordan. that diplomatic is still open. president obama was briefed again by the national security adviser susan rice as he considers his options how best to consider his crisis. which could include air strikes. illinois congressman adam kingsington served in iraq. >> we've got in there, work with a political solution with iraq

but push back this very evil organization isis and give the iraqi government breathing room to do what it needs to do. >> what are lawmakers saying about the situation? >> reporter: well, as you heard adam kinsinger. they say the united states needs to take urgent action. and iran's president said his troops would be ready to help if requested. senator graham also said pulling u.s. troops out of iraq left a dangerous vacuum and the stakes right now are extremely high. >> according to our only national director of national intelligence, fbi director, the next 9/11 is coming from here. what they say and i agree with them. >> you think that wedge have

another 9/11? >> i think it's inevitable. the seeds are being planted all over iraq and syria. this is what they are telling you they are going to do. they are not hiding their agenda. >> u.s. air strikes might be necessary. >> those are some very chilling words and i have to ask how this might break politically inside the beltway, are the democrats saying anything differently at this point? >> that's a little bit mixed. opinions are all over the place on both sides of aisle. at least one democrat is critical of the obama administration for failing to see this crisis coming. >> i think our intelligence has failed us miserably for not being aware and the threat that we face scpd how this could unfold as quickly as it has. this has been plan for quite some time. my first thing is get your intelligence group back on track. >> manchin said air strikes might be the only way to get

iraq back on track. >> we're getting so many details at this hour that are coming in about what they are doing, these insurgents as they move from town to town to town. i'm curious to know what is the update about this very moment about what we're doing. >> the white house keeping an eye on it. u.s. considering all its options. meantime, security is being beefed up at the u.s. embassy in baghdad and some personnel are being transferred out o harms way but the state department says the embassy remains open for business and the u.s. aircraft carrier, the george h.w. bush is in the arabian sea to provide more flexibility if military intervention is ordered. >> thank you very much. so as lawmakers pressure the president to take action, what does he have at his disposal when it comes to the military? we saw a map similar to what you

have seen here. it shows roughly 35,000 military personnel currently stationed across the middle east at bases in turkey, jordan, kuwait and qatar. you've got fighter planes, drones can move in quickly in ickirlik. you don't remember can, we have 2000 troops. if 16 fighter jets. not that far away. here's the biggest forms, 10,000 ground rules, especially forces and more drones in kuwait. as we move across, uss george hmple w. bush just pulled into port. we've got b 1 bombers station thrd in qatar that are nearby as well. we've got a lot of forces that can move in very quickly depending on what the president would decide to do right now, that in conjunction with giving the support that it would take to get all those people out of baghdad, thousands of them

between the embassy and other diplomatic facilities there as well. joining that carrier are a guided missile cruiser and destroyer as well pulling into position. meanwhile, in iraq, stunning images are emerging showing the horrific blood shed. ice isis gun men killing scores. these are some we thought we could show you. connor powell continues. >> the fighting in iraq today harris escalating into becoming more brutal as the sunni militants try to consolidate their gains before moving on to baghdad. pictures show mass fighters of islamic state of iraq in syria murdering hundreds of people in the cities insurgents now control. in some cases they are beheading people. these images will only sharpen the sectarian tensions in iraq.

meanwhile in basra and baghdad, hundreds answering the call by iraq's political leaders to take up arms. they are trying to dig in and protect the capital. iraq is splitting up along religious and ethnic lines and iran is threatening to jump into the conflict, pledging to help the government of prime minister maliki who is a shiite muslim. as iraq desends into chaos, the aircraft carrier uss george h.w. bush moves into the golf. we're going to continue into

sergeant bowe bergdahl. he begins the reintegration process and the u.s. army is now investigating what led to his capture. army officials are appointing a two-star general to find out how and why bergdahl left his base in afghanistan. after he disappeared that night, he became a p.o.w. for five years. now he's settling into a routine at brooke army medical center in san antonio, texas and army officials say he's working with doctors to gain physical and emotional stability. meanwhile, the controversial trade to free bergdahl for those five guantanamo bay detainees is raising a question about the future of gitmo. >> reporter: we had a news conference here at guantanamo bay with the chief prosecutor with the military commission. we've got some new pretrial hearing in the 9/11 case. those five defendants were faris arraigned here two years ago and

there's still no trial schedule and they are also up against the president's promise to close the guantanamo camp. >> i have two choices as a leader in this process. one is grim determination. the other is tempered optimism and i stay between those two in a very narrow band. >> reporter: we arrived here at guantanamo bay yesterday along with about 100 staff of the military commission. right now, at the camp, 149 detainees are left. 80 are cleared tor transfer. the rest are subject to indefinite detention. that means there's not enough evidence to prosecute them in the military courts but there is enough evidence to make the case that the men remain a threat to the u.s. national security interests. most of the prisoners are in camp six. that's the same where the former taliban prisoners were released.

on the boem administration to help mexico secure its northern border. hundreds of children have been coming to the united states through mexico. they are now being placed in facilities in the southwest. representative henry sellier says securing the u.s.-mexican border is not enough. the united states should also find financial assistance to help mexico to secure its border. meanwhile, two planefuls of undocumented citizens to san antonio this weekend. why did house majority leader eric cantor lose to a tea party candidate in virginia. he is now speaking out about it

this week. the memory is still fresh in our minds from president obama on friday talking about where we are with this crisis and moving ahead, but i remember back in 2011, he pretty much forecast that this wopt be happening. let's take a look at what he said then and what he said on friday. can we? >> we're leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant iraq with a representative government that was elected by its people. >> any action that we may take to provide assistance to iraqi security forces has to be joined by a serious and sincere effort by iraq's leaders to set aside sectarian differences. we can't do it for them. and in the absee of this type of political effort, short term military action, including any assistance we might provide, won't succeed. >> that's a case of that was then and this is now. >> but we are supposed to be the political insiders so we have mid term elections in five months here in the united

states. does this impact it and i think the way it does is, a, the american people, i will bet you, 70% in polling will say let's not get involved militarily anymore in iraq and b buzz it's all going to held in a hand basket, it's going to help the republicans because they are the out party, the passion is on the right, and the feeling that obama is just a failed president is sort of a growing feeling in the country, will help the republicans this fall. >> yeah. >> pat. >> yeah. i think, you know, he look at the president's numbers as doug said, john pointed out, the president's numbers from being trustworthy in gallop past the people saying he's not trustworthy as president. all the polls are showing his personal character sticks are at the lowest level. i think we're at the tipping point where there's no return

for the president and actually for his -- could be for his party this november. but i have to tell you the leadership vacuum, the shock of seeing that comment, i listened to tom donlin, the true author of the benghazi talking points, on tv this morning, and he was saying, oh, it was a status of forces agreement. we couldn't get one. they abandoned iraq. they abandoned getting a better deal, forcing the government and now by the way when we're at the what we call the helicopter moment when soon we will have helicopters taking american personnel out of baghdad trying desperately while people are being murdered everywhere, this is going to be an unmitigated disaster and the establishment of this super islamic radical state that even al qaeda thinks has gone too far is a disaster

for american interests and for the whole world. >> hey, doug, before we go to break, secretary of state john kerry according to our sources at the state department has said to have made calls to the jordan foreign minister, the saudi foreign minister, the qatari foreign ministers. what goes on inside the white house in a memo like this? >> my sense is frankly panic. the only way what you can do what the president spoke of friday which is to reconcile the sun nie and the shiite politicians is if you offer leadership and to date we do not have a strategy for dealing with the iraqi crisis. we have running isis. a guy who was in detention who was released and on leaving detention he said see you in new york. so, harris, the rest of the world sees this. they panic because there is no
