back to you. >> january,000,000 thank you. thank you for being with us. don't forget to join bret baier and me tomorrow night for interview with hillary clinton. up next the o'reilly factor. good night. the roirlg factor is on. tonight: >> happening extremely difficult for all of us. >> does it mean it was all for nothing? >> well, it really seems to be that way today. >> a general who served in iraq apparently believing america blood and treasure was weationed -- wasted there. now al qaeda army is threatening to take over. what should president obama do? we'll tell you tonight. >> are you concerned about what will happen to the iraqis if we leave? >> i'm concerned about what is happening to the iraqis right now. >> if the president does bomb the al qaeda army, can you expect some on the far left to object because it's always america's fault. is it not? we'll have a report.
5:01 pm
>> what about hillary is so impressive to you? >> that she is, you know, taking a licking and kept on ticking. >> do you like to take a licking and keep on ticking? >> what's going on here? >> also ahead, watters world, the hillary clinton edition. >> what do you think her biggest accomplishment was as secretary of state? >> yikes. >> caution, you are about to enter the no spin zone. the factor begins right now. ♪ ♪ hi, i'm bill o'reilly. thanks for watchings tonight. were americans' lives wasted in iraq? that is the subject of this evening's talking points memo. we have received a number of letters from military families who saw their loved ones killed or severely wounded in iraq. some of the letters are heart-breaking and all of them ask this question: hy did our people sacrifice so
5:02 pm
much if now iraq is going to become a terror state? yesterday, on abc, a general who served in iraq addressed that question. >> i don't really know what you say to those families. this has got to be so difficult for them. it's difficult for the almost 4500 survivors who have lost loved ones in iraq. it's difficult for all the wounded. it's difficult for all those folks who spent much longer than i did, much longer than two years, four, five, six tours over there and put their lives on hold to see this happening is extremely difficult for all of us. >> i mean, does it mean it was all for nothing? >> well,. >> it really seems to be that way today. >> with all due respect, i disagree with general chiarelli. part of a world wild unit. these people are hell bent on opposing fanatical strain
5:03 pm
of islam on the world. president obama pulled out troops our initial sacrifice was not in vain. in fact, it was noble. i am addressing the following comments directly to the brave men and women who served in afghanistan, vietnam, korea and iraq. you guys defeated a killer saddam hussein, a man who oppressed millions of people and was the embodiment of evil. we are doing the same thing now in afghanistan, trying to give the afghan people a chance to throw off the brutal oppression of the taliban. likewise in vietnam armed forces fought against communist totalitarians who once we left southeast asia murdered millions of people. millions. the truth is that america has always fought on the side of freedom. giving people the chance to decide what their country should be. the south seems did
5:04 pm
vietnamese did not fight hard enough for their freedom dom they lost it they want to settle scores, shias vs. sunni, that kind of thing. all you guys can do in the military is give people a chance. and you have done that at great sacrifice time after time after time. you saved the south koreas. can you imagine those people living today under the north korean tyrant. let's stop the nonsense. the u.s. protects the rights of people all over the world. period. the abu ghraib other embarrassments have a very small part of the picture. by the men and women of the u.s. military. now for the current iraq mess. president obama understands take over the use as safe haven launch attacks all over the place including on america itself. >> we have enormous interests there and obviously our troops and the american people and a the american taxpayers made huge investments and sacrifices
5:05 pm
in order to give iraqis the opportunity to chart a better course, a better destiny. but ultimately they are going to have to seize it. as i said before, we are not going to be able to do it for them. >> and that's true. we are not going to be be able to solve the internal problems of the iraqis. that being said, i fully expect president obama to begin bombing the al qaeda army very soon. if he does not do that, it was be an enormous dereliction of duty. he is the commander and chief. al qaeda wants to kill us. so he must send a message to them and to the largely cowardly world. we will not allow savages to disseminate the world. that is the message that must be sent. let me ask all you you bleeding hearts this question. what's wrong with destroying an al qaeda army anywhere on
5:06 pm
earth? what's wrong with that? these people want to destroy civilization, they want to impose sharia law. the army murdered nearly 2,000 people. executing anyone suspected of being in the iraqi army or police force. putting them in ditches, shooting them while they lay prone. beheading them. setting them on fire you name it while that was going on. president obama was playing golf in california. again, i expect the commander and chief to begin bombing the al qaeda army in iraq and syria forth with. he has already announced a few u.s. troops will be sent to baghdad to protect americans there. but that's purely a defensive action. of course, once you go on offense, you are going to get some people protesting. some libertarians don't want any foreign involvement, and a number of far left people
5:07 pm
simply oppose everything the u.s.a. does. a few years ago, before the u.s. pulled out of iraq, we put this question to it jane fonda. >> what do you think might happen to the iraqis? are you concerned about what will happen to the iraqis if we leave? >> i'm concerned about what's happening to the iraqis right now. >> what do you think about what happened to the 3 million vietnamese in cambodia after the u.s. troops left vietnam. >> it's too bad that we caused it to happen by going in there in the first place. >> that's right, ms. fonda. we caused all the murders in southeast, asia. don't blame the communist. it was our fault. what a loon: talking points well understands history will reflect that the united states made a mistake attacking iraq after 9/11 it was not worth the trillion dollars spent and all the blood of our military. but, again, our intent was noble. we took out a mass murderer who oppressed millions of
5:08 pm
people. unfortunately, many of the iraqi people did not appreciate it and are now fighting among themselves, giving advantage to al qaeda. but make no mistake. by attacking al qaeda from the air, the u.s.a. may be helping the government in baghdad. but we are real fighting to it defend ourselves. these savages will kill us if they get the chance. even jane fonda. and that's the memo. next on the rundown, karl rove will react. remember, he was in the bush white house when we launched the attack in 2000 2003. mr. rove moments away. thit's not the "limit yoursh hard earned cash back" card . it's not the "confused by rotating categories" card. it's the no-category-gaming, no-look-passing, clear-the-lane-i'm- going-up-strong, backboard-breaking, cash back card.

giants stood tall and the good queen showed the boy it could all be real avo: whatever you can imagine, all in one place expedia, find yours would marker fight al qaeda in iraq. today is he meeting with his national security council and we expect the president to commence action shortly. karl rove advising president bush u.s. invaded in iraq. do you believe with me that bombing should happen? let's recognize there are tactical restraints how tactical it can be. look, we are best at this if we are hitting concentrations of forces on the ground or we have large
5:13 pm
forces in movement and what we have seen here says we are facing a relatively modest number of fighters who emerge in urban environment and then move on to the next target. they may be content to remain where they are, consolidate their gains and not provide a high profile that could be dealt with by air power projected off of the u.s. george h.w. bush or off of bases in kuwait or saudi arabia. >> just quick as would send message around the world and stiffen the backs. we are not expecting al qaeda to surrender. you are right they will behind behind the civilians as they always do. inaction, no action i think would be a disaster for this country. >> total disaster. >> i do think we have to avoid becoming the air force. presence guide iraqis on the ground. if we had a residual force
5:14 pm
there a stay behind force of advisors, they could be helping the -- stiffen the iraqi fines, help them coordinate and plan their efforts. provide vital intelligence. and maybe even some special operators take on a couple of vital important tanks. but, we can't just simply do this from the air. that was the joe biden strategy from afghanistan and iraq. and we will find that if that's all we do. >> you are saying the united states should inject ground forces in now is that what you are saying? >> no. i want to be careful. look, we have got -- the president announced 275. >> 275. >> right. 275. i'm not a military expert so i can't tell you the magic number. look, we have the ability to help provide intelligence and help plan and coordinate and provide logistical support and close in air support. we are better off if we have somebody who is helping guide these planes in and
5:15 pm
guide. >> i don't think anybody opposes. >> than if we are doing a standoff. >> i shouldn't say that most people would not oppose that i don't think you are going to get a mass force. we have should have left 10,000 behind but we didn't. we have to deal with reality now. kuds force is already in there that's iran's elite units. >> revolutionary guard, yes. >> they're going to fight on the side of the she a and basically have this sphere of influence where they do fight and that's why. >> well, that's why we have got to have a strong enough u.s. presence so that the iraqis have to choose between the kuds force and the united states. >> all right. i will tell you right now the kuds force wins because we are not going to have that on the ground. our pals at msnbc are blaming you and bush, you know that never should have gone there, you know, if we didn't do it, we wouldn't have. this. >> i noticed that msnbc
5:16 pm
crowd are not critical of the secretary of state who served president obama, both secretary kerry voted for use of force against iraq. >> that's because you and president bush fooled the world by consciously saying there were no weapons of mass destruction. look, you have to understand what this is. the far left says that you and bush and everybody involved with it did it on mures. you knew there were no weapons of mass destruction. >> that's an old argument that really we waste time on. >> we waste time. >> people on the other side who looked at this same intelligence came to the same conclusion including people like al gore, bill clinton, hillary clinton, john kerry. >> and bill o'reilly. >> bill o'reilly as well. here is why it's important. because president obama is going to use that at some point to justify his inaction. and that's where it brings us up to where we are now.
5:17 pm
you know that's going to happen. >> you know, look, president obama has made a the will of mistakes in handling iraq. he did not establish a relationship with maliki that allowed him to use u.s. influence to keep. remember, when obama comes into office, the number two and number three slots in iraq are held by sunni and kurds. so we have all of the religious elements. the cabinet included christians. we had influence there. and when that influence diminished as the president got less and less engaged. i don't just mean the absence of u.s. troops. i mean almost from the beginning he did not remain engaged to influence the iraqi leadership to move in the direction of modernization and remofl of these second tarren feuds. and we are reaping the whirlwind. >> it's his mess now. >> yeah. >> it's his mess now and we will see what he does. mr. rove, thank you. juan and mary katharine on president obama's leadership. later, take you down to the

5:22 pm
like want to try to slow down any attacks on those oil fields that could disrupt the international economy. >> you have got to tell the audience how. >> i was listening to president o'reilly a minute ago and i thought he had a good idea a minute ago. even as symbolic gesture i think bombing to set a clear line is important. >> absolutely. >> i like what the president said today is he going to send in forces to protect our embassy folks and secondly that he is considering in forces special on guys who could try to prop that up unbelievably weak iraqi military. that's maliki's fault. maliki is the one that took away the generals and he is the one that disseminated the force even though they have a 25 to 1 advantage they have folded. >> okay. those are legitimate points. what would do you mary katharine if you were the first woman president of the united states? >> watch out glass ceilings. first of a all i think i agree with both of you.
5:23 pm
air strikes in some capacity could be hopeful. my fear is and i would have grave concern as the president that that alone is not going to help because you don't have the institutional knowledge that you need on the ground. when it comes to these middle eastern conflicts our problem has been the last couple of years is knowing the good guys from the bad. when we had a residual force on the ground in iraq. we had many years figuring out. building up in treasure and friends who lost life and limb to make sure that we could build up those good folks now we don't have a -- >> theoretical world. >> no not theoretical past. past. i don't have to hear the suggestion that was inevitable. that is gut referring wrenching to the people who lost life and limb making these gains. >> if they had a 10,000 man residual force i think most sane people would say it wouldn't happen that's important point to make to honor the gains that were made and not as if to act
5:24 pm
inevitable because the iraqi in 2011 we would prefer over anything in the middle east right now. >> listen to me. i want to go forward now, okay. >> i'm very capable of listening to you and i think it's important to address other things as well. >> i think everybody knows that let's go forward. now, juan, on friday, i did talking points memo that said on a variety of issues that president obama has been caught by surprise. putin and crimea. surprise. auto thousand kids crossing the border in the last 8 months. surprise. >> i heard you. >> and now the al qaeda army coming down from syria. surprise what do you think is going on, juan? why is he so surprised all the time. >> wait a minute. we live in a an unstable world. i thought that when you said it friday. i don't think this is the doings of one president. >> don't we have cia and intelligence apparatus to spend billions of dollars on? why are we surprised every two minutes on huge things.
5:25 pm
>> i think we do have intelligence. it's not to say you can stop it because you know it's coming. >> why is it surprise? why don't we anticipate anything? >> what are you going to do with crimea. once you anticipate it you can stop it. >> he didn't even know about it until they did it? >> i think they have a very clear idea. the cia director was on the ground in the ukraine with the next week. we know what's going on. >> i don't think you can blame our intelligence. >> you can say juan doesn't surprised. >> i just want to drive home a quick point which is this should be a crisis not a long term military commitment. i don't think republicans want it or democrats want that. >> juan, juan. my question is a simple one. i'm a simple man. why is he surprised every two minutes? mary katharine? >> to juan's point you do not have to have a perfect solution to each of these crises but to not be surprised about them woutep oney there was plenty of information that you didn't need to be surprised. >> yeah.
5:26 pm
we are surprised about the v.a. we are surprised that the irs deletes lois lerner's emails. surprise, we are surprised again. i'm getting a little worried about being surprised. mary katharine, why is it the intelligence agency's fault? why? why are we surprised all the time? >> i think there is an issue of competence and management in all of these federal agencies and there is the idea that the federal government is so gigantic that it becomes unwieldy and hard to management that's not an excuse for president obama. but it is a problem with the federal government. >> aren't you guys worried that he is surprised by everything? doesn't it worry you? >> yeah. >> wait, wait. bill, are you blaming obama? >> i'm saying that there is something. >> does he not take responsibility for anything, juan? >> we can't anticipate any of these problems. last word mary katharine, go. >> look, i think when it comes to iraq and various problems. when it comes it iraq you could have anticipated this as you are pointing out, bill. you could have left a residual group and made sure

grande. what you are looking at now is pictures taken by border patrol agents of two facilities in mcallen, texas in rio grande is city. the border pa trillion agents are taking these pictures because they want to get the word out what the situation is people sleeping on insulated foil mats in these facilities. what's happening. we saw two women from guatemala this morning as we were making our way down to the rio grand. they were standing very calmly on top of the levy waiting fort border patrol to pick them up because the word has gotten out far and wide in central america that you are a woman with a child or pregnant woman you will be able to stay in the united states for at least a time. and unaccompanied children as well. they will be able to stay in the united states for at lease for a time while remofl proceedings are underway. i talked with democratic congressman henry, he is an ally of the president's, but he is very much at odds with the the president over what's going on in the border. and he says that these people are being given what are called notices to appear

coming across the river. walking across the border. you said the border is a sive. that anybody can get across it. >> there literally bill is no impediment to central american immigrants to get across the border into the united states. if you are a drug runner, if you are running guns. there have been impediments to that because the border patrol is down there and they're looking for those people. they have all of that high tech surveillance equipment looking for people crossing the border. when you are a person who wants to get caught, there is no way to stop them. >> there is no electrified fence. >> no, there is nothing. >> there is no barrier? >> no. >> there is none of that. >> we were displaced in the riverside club. it's this little grass roots place owned by a lovely couple. we spent some time there today watching. they is a little property down the street they are clearing to try to build another facility there every night people come across the river. every morning people come across the river in a raft inflatable boat. they walk up on the shore and levy about 100 yards

5:42 pm
i have got no objection to a guy playing golf and there are times when it is useful for the president to seem not overly bothered by things. i don't think this particular weekend in iraq is one of them so here is a guy brilliant enough to get elected president, twice. all right? and head to harvard law review and he doesn't understand that when he is out on the golf course being gunned down by invading al qaeda army that it looks bad? he doesn't get it? >> it certainly looks bad. the problem is it is bad. we have got it understand. >> presidency is a job that shows you the difference between being smart and being wise. this president is smart enough he is not wise enough for the job in my judgment and is he continually now because of mistakes made in the past, issues neglected, the chickens are coming home to roost and they are coming home in droves. >> okay. so all the foreign policy
5:43 pm
