>> kelly wright is here with the latest. it looks like a war zone. >> you are correct. they did say it looks that way. more than half of the town is gone. that's how the county commissioner described the devastation in the tiny town of pilger. the governor declaring a state of emergency there. twin tornadoes about a mile apart touching down as they zero in killing a 5-year-old child and another person in a nearby town. at least 19 people are hurt in the town some of them critically. homes and businesses ripped apart. authorities say half of the town was destroyed in just seconds. some places even ripped from their foundation. josh watched in horror as the storm demolished his home. >> started going through my yard. i watched my hot tubs fly and

everything clifted off. the heater smashed over me and my buddy. >> rescue crews are sifting through the diabetes and rubble for more victims or survivors. about 350 people live in the tiny town of pill ger. they will need help on the long road to recovery. the national guard is being brought in with local police and the community and to help them clean up. >> amazing footage of those double twisters. . kelly wright, thank you. there's a new weather threat today and for that we turn to maria molina in our extreme weather center. >> that's right. we are looking at the possibility for more severe storms today including more tornadoes more damaging winds and reports of large hail across areas in the plains and treching much further east today. this will be a widespread area from the eastern parts of montana to the dakotas and

northeastern nebraska that saw the twisters produce the damage out there through eye yaw the great lakes and the interior portions of the great lakes. i think the greatest risk today will be yet again across parts of the northern plains for some of the longer track storms that could produce significant damage. coming up tomorrow take a look at this map the same area could be seeing more severe weather out here minneapolis, omaha, chicago, you could be seeing the severe storms. by tomorrow the severe weather goes through new jersey and the new york city area. out here we will be looking at more isolated storms. otherwise one of the otherqjg?b concerns as far as the weather goes are one of the ingredients that helps fire up the storms is a contrast in temperatures. we are going to be seeing them ccli%ng into the 90s. it will be pot out there across the plains in the midwest. coming up at 5:15 a.m., reed timer who is in february

this morning the small town of pilgner completely torn apart. residents begin digging out. we are joined by meteorologist reed kimmer. he was chasing in the same area in nebraska. he has been chasing all night. read what have you seen? >> it was like something i had never seen in 16 years of storm chasing. there were two violent tornadoes on the ground at the same time within a mile apart. so they are rotating around like a merry go round. they were coming into down there that's why we had to drop everything. we saw the damage and dropped everything and helped out the search and rescue effort. every single house in that town was devastated. >> you mentioned you had never seen anything like it before.

how rare is it and how close were you able to get? >> we are armored vehicles so we can get there safely. when the tornado touched down it touched right on top of the vehicle. that happened extremely fast. that was another thing that was unique about it is they had no tornado on the ground and it happened in seconds. it had two violent tornadoes at the same time. >> let's bring in maria molina who has a question as well. >> i was watching the storms on radar yesterday at home and i saw them evolve so quickly. what could you see at the time how quickly did it happen? >> the first tornado was a tornado in the distance. it looked like this was going to be a few more minutes until the

next one touched down. it caught us by surprise. it was a prolific tornado producer and efficient. they can happen fast with little or mow warning. they had several minutes of warning. still it was that vie p lent. >> in studio or when we are looking it he storms on radar we can see them rotate and potentially produce them on the ground. but having them on the ground being able to verify they are on the ground and where they are headed is very valuable. stay safe as you chase there coming up later today and also into tomorrow. >> thank you very much. we will check back with you. amazing to see the footage
