mishap in three of its facilities after 80 workers were reportedly exposed to anthrax. how does something like this happen? >> this is shocking news, as cdc announced this week, on june 13th, a mistake, a mishap happened that should never happen. this is a very sophisticated lab in atlanta. they deal with e boly, small box, and anthrax. the protocol failed this time. and this is what happened. one big lab sent live anthrax to another lab. they realized it was live later and they were exposed to this. they're not getting sick at this point, they're all getting treated. it can take up to two months or 60 days before the symptoms would start. you would ask whether exactly people should be looking for. if they have cutaneous anthrax, they would see painful ulcers or
9:32 am
lesions. if you inhale, then you can get fever, chills, short of breath, all that stuff. the big thing is the concern that it cannot be transmitted from one person to another person. if somebody has it, i would not be able to get it, because it has to be in the air, not contagious like that. but it is lethal, very dangerous. they're being treated and we'll wait to see what happens with this. >> the important points you raised. dr. siegel, i ask you, we don't want to alarm anybody, 80 is a lot of people. this is a large number. but it's not like it's going to be spreading across the city of atlanta or something, right? >> as david just mentioned, i wrote about this in my book "false alarm" after the 2001 anthrax mailings, the biggest thing is fear. anthrax is not contagious. it cannot spread beyond the people that are already exposed. the problem is the cdc has a buy ore terror rapid response unit. that's where this was. basically they're trying to
9:33 am
figure out what would happen if god forbid there is another terrorist attack. how do we defend ourselves. they're studying anthrax. they have it in a spore form most likely and everybody gets vaccinated and they wear a suit, and they're protected. instead of keeping it there, they decided let's try killing it with chemicals, and then if it's dead, we can send it to another lab that's got has lung protection. this was the first time they ever tried the chemical out. they should never have let it out to another lab. >> the chemical didn't work. >> didn't work. radiation will kill it. but this chemical didn't work. it was still growing. we have a statement from the cdc. >> in fact, eric, why don't you tell us. >> the cdc responding to this. this is the statement. quote, why this happened is a million-dollar question. we're getting to the bottom of this. these incidents can happen. the safety of our employees is priority one, and once this incident was realized, we moved

swiftly to protect our workers. marc, you said the 2001 incidents, there was a woman, a hospital worker in new york, died. they thought maybe she got it from mailing or subway or something. >> eric, that's exactly what the level two lab does, and why it's important once they kill the anthrax, because they're trying to figure out how to identify anthrax. if you get a white powder in an envelope, how do you know that's anthrax? that's what the level two lab is trying to figure out, so health authorities can look quickly and say, that's not anthrax, don't worry about it. >> so the chemical didn't work. >> it worked for 24 hours. it did work for 24 hours. just to give credit to cdc. it wasn't completely a huge mistake. it worked for 24 hours. they cleaned up everything. and then one of those ended up being in the incubator after they found out, wait a second, look inside that we found -- the way penicillin was discovered, they found out that it's live
9:35 am
and actually grew. they're making progress to kill anthrax as opposed to radiation. now they're going to be treated with cipro, or docks i psych clean. >> antibiotics. >> antibiotics, right. they have to take it for about two months. the public should not be panicking. there's no threat out there. they're treating everybody with vaccine. there is a vaccine for this. >> what about their families? >> again -- >> there's no transmission -- >> there's no transmission person to person. nobody should worry. for the u.s. army, these people in the lab, they can get a vaccine, six of them in about 18 months and they can prevent from getting anthrax. now that they have it, they probably will give them a boost of three vaccines over the next few months in order to control this. you're right, it's a lethal bioterror drug. it killed about five people in 2001. we just have to wait to see what happens here. >> the key is the issue of aerosolizing it. they make it so it can fly
9:36 am
through the air. it's in a spore form which is less likely to infect anyone. of those 84 people, unlikely anyone will get sick here. but if they got sick, the one in your lungs is the worst obvious obviously. >> it's contained and they have it under control. >> absolutely. >> what mark is talking about spore, the bacteria that has a shell around it. that's why it's hard to -- >> can stay in the environment for a long time. >> that's good news. okay. dr. oz, sitting on the hot seat this past week, coming up, why he was forced to publicly apologize, and what you need to know about all the medical advice you hear on television. stick around for that. it says here that a won's sex drive

it was a tough week for one television doctor, dr. oz. he was getting grilled in front of the senate panel and forced to apologize over his claims that certain weight loss products are miracle also. dr. siegel, what did he say and what did he apologize for? >> he basically said he's a cheerleader for his audience. he sees people out there who are overweight. he thinks, i've got to help these people. david and i take this very seriously, you've got to stay within your expertise, what do you know about and what don't you know about. he's a cardiovascular surgeon, and has a great reputation as a surgeon. but when he starts talking about weight loss products, he's getting into the weeds there. a lot of nutritionists told me they don't see a lot of evidence for these particular items that say is a miracle pill. we talked about one here on the show here. we don't think that it works. also, he says green tea extract.
9:41 am
it's got an active chemical in it that's not been shown to work. here's the thing, eric. i want to make sure to say this. we have an extra responsibility as physicians on tv, we're not just reporters, we're not just guests, we're not just co-hosts, we are responsible to educate the public accurately on medical information. if we go and make speculations, even if we could be right, we're doing a disservice. i think, and david and i both have said, exercise, mediterranean diet we promote on this show, fruits and vegetables, fibers, lifestyle alterations, not magic pills which actually if you have underlying heart disease or other medical problems, can make problems worse. >> if i may jump in, eric, you know, the two of you, you'll leave monday through friday, you'll go and practice. you're in the operating room, doing your thing. dr. oz, he does surgery once a month or something. i'm not quite sure. a little bit limited because he has the pressures of doing a
9:42 am
television talk show. >> i know him actually quite well. because we used to practice together at columbia presbyterian years ago. i think since he's sincere about what he's trying to tell people out there, he sees obesity as a major risk factor, an epidemic. as a cardiac surgeon he wants to make a big difference. he's obviously articulate. but he got into trouble when he let his passion get ahead of him. when you start talking about here's a magic pill, you have this extract, raspberry, and we know that none of them have really good studies to back it up. we know they're not magic pills. my problem is that sometimes the patients, they really listen, and they follow. and when they don't get the results, it's kind of creating a false hope. but i think deep inside, he really wants to make a difference. it's under scrutiny of the producers for the ratings.
9:43 am
one thing i will tell you, a compliment of fox news, really, nobody tells me what to say and what to do. >> nobody could do that anyway. nobody. >> and that's what i love about it, because there's good research. >> you dashed some of these exact diet names in a show we did here in march. >> you're absolutely right. i made it very clear that there's no research to back it up. there's no long-term data. that's a problem. one more thing. fda, and it's time for fda to get involved with the alternative medicines, vitamins and supplements. if it's not going to be regulated, then we're going to have eric's vitamins and maybe come up with the magic pill. that's what it is. i think that he got into this circle of this whole -- >> it's over the counter. nobody's looking at this. if i decide i want to put

someone on a form of speed, i'm watching carefully their weight, blood pressure. i don't like doing that. i like the lifestyle i talk about. no one's monitoring. green coffee extract, people have gotten into trouble with that as a result. one last point. we've had dr. oz on fox and "friends" many times. he's very sincere and very informed and he's usually excellent at articulating things. but he gets into the weeds with the products -- >> there's no magic pills, no magic secret. even if they work, they would be short term. exercise, diet, you cannot be lazy about this. >> you've got to exercise, diet. >> what's wrong with that? >> exercise is a magic pill. if you exercise, change the hunger hormones in your brain. we've talked about it. your hunger goes down. start exercising first thing in the morning. do cardiovascular.
9:45 am
i love the elliptical, bike, walking, first thing in the morning. >> the hollywood and producers pushed him and he should have stopped. but that comes with this strv stuff. as a doctor, you're responsible to be honest, do the good research. i've said it many times, if something doesn't work, i'll tell you right out there. if i feel coffee is healthy for you, i'll tell you. i think marc agrees with me. >> we have to be fair and balanced and that's what we are. >> dr. oz comes from kind of, you know -- >> we have a problem with the weight loss program. >> it can be a scary sign, ever had blood in your urine? what steps do you need to take to deal with it? it's our should i worry segment today. what it means if you find blood in your urine.

if you're asking, i'm seeing blood in my urine, should i worry. dr. samadi, does it make a difference if you're a man or a woman? >> it doesn't make much of a difference. this is a bread-and-butter urology work. could be microscopic where you don't see it, but your doctor can test in the office and see it, or in this particular case the patient sees the blood. you wake up in the morning, you see the blood. it's anxiety induced.

kidney, ureter, bladder. it could be some sort of a kidney infection, or bladder infection. both in men and women. or it could be a kidney stone or bladder stone. those are the different diagnoses. as a cancer doctor, that i worry about, it could be kidney cancer or bladder cancer. this patient will come in, we check the urine for urinalysis, for urine culture to make sure there's no infection. you send in for cytology. more important, with a camera, i can look in the bladder and find is there any stone in the bladder, is there any bladder cancer. you want to know that, because we can clean this up and also for kidney stone, what we use in noncontrast cat scan, to find out if there's a kidney stone. we need to go through the gamut of urine tests and x-rays. a lot of times it may be nothing. it could be just from vigorous exercise you may see this. >> when you go see -- when you're a patient, as part of the

blood, urine samples, they test for blood? >> this is exactly what i was going to get to first, eric. that an internist should be checking urine, not only blood on everyone. we often forget that. we should not forget that. if there's blood in the urine, what do i do about it? >> he calls me. >> well, i may. here's when i call him, here's when i don't. if it's vigorous exercise and it goes away, i might not call him. if it's a bladder infection and i can clear it with antibiotics, and i prove to myself over months that it ain't coming back, i might not call him. if you ate beets the night before and turns your urine red and i check it and i don't find red blood cells in it, i might not call him. but if it persists, i worry about kidney stones, kidney, bladder cancer, anything that persists in medicine that you're not used to seeing, you start calling in specialists like david here. >> what about cranberry juice? >> that's for urinary infection. cranberry juice does actually

help urinary infection. >> does it keep it at bay if you regularly drink it? >> a lot of fluids to wash out the system. it's not like antibiotics, not the same thing, but some studies have shown some effect. >> cranberry, you know, again, it's one of those things that there's no major science behind this. it's more of like a diuretic, we give it to the patient to wash out any kind of gravel or anything like that. let me say one other thing. in men, we see also blood in the urine. that could be because of the enlarged prostate. a lot of times as we get older, the prostate can get larger, and the bladder has to work harder and you'll have blood. that's why men get bladder stones, because they don't empty their urine, and the urine can stay there and become a bladder stone. >> women can sometimes feel a urinary tract infection coming on, and they drink more fluid, cranberry juice, diuretics can prevent it from actual hi

>> if you go to china, you will. >> this is from johns hopkins. it's kind of an ingenius study. they looked at 300 people in china living near high pollution. they checked the urine and found they were producing more carcinogens in their urine, getting rid of the bad stuff, because of broccoli. i love broccoli. it's a great, great vegetable. two, when you think of detox, though, i don't think of it in terms of this. i think of it in terms of drinking more water, sweating, getting those toxins out, exercising more, drinking more tea and coffee, as david says. fruit and vegetables. eating right, exercising a lot, sweating, maybe going for one of those massages with the herbal scrubs, but that's about it. and if you start overdoing these detoxifying things, not just broccoli, you end up with these fad diets and upsetting what's going on in your colon. it's not good for you.

>> i don't know where he gets his massage in chinatown or wherever he goes, but this is about 50 miles from shanghai. the pollution over there is horrendous. what i like about this is there is some science behind it. it was published in the clinical cancer prevention. they looked at about 300 patients. some looked at this broccoli and sprouts and some didn't. after they checked the urine in blood, they found out there was 60% more excretion of benzine and 20% more discretion offal l offalkaline, so there is something to it. air pollution in new york city is getting worse. we're not quite there yet, but there is some truth to this detox. a lot of detox that you read, you have to be careful. they want you to fast for many days, they want you to go only on fruit juice and vegetable juice for many days. i think you're going to go through a lot of glycemic roller coasters.
