fire following a major mishap in three of its facilities after 80 workers were reportedly exposed to anthrax. how much do you know about this and how does something like this happen? >> it's shocking new that cdc announced this week that on june 13th, a mishap happened which should have never happened. this is a very sophisticated lab in thereabout. they deal with ebola and small pox. they deal with anthrax. they have a lot of protocol and unfortunately it failed this time. one big lab sent a live anthrax to another lab. they thought it was dead, but they found out a few days after it was live and a lot of people were exposed to this. they are all being treated. nobody is getting sick at this point. it can take two months before the symptoms would start. you would ask what exactly people should be looking for. they would see painless ulcers
1:32 pm
and lesions. more importantly, since it became aerosolized. if you inhale, you can get fever, chills, short of breath. the concern you may have is, it cannot be transmitted from one person to another person. i would not be able to get it because it has to be in the air, not contagious like that. but it's lethal, very dangerous. they're being treat sfwld another important point you raised, we don't want to alarm everybody. 80 is a lot of people. but it's not like it's spreading across the city of atlanta or something, right? >> no. and as david just mentioned and i wrote about this in my book, the biggest problem is fear here because anthrax is not contagious. it cannot spread beyond the people already exposed. the cdc has a bioterror rapid
1:33 pm
response unit. they're trying to figure out what would happen if god for bid there is another terrorist attack. so they're studying anthrax. they have it in a spore form most likely and they wear respiratory devices. they're protected. instead of keeping it there, they decided let's try killing it with chemicals and then if it's dead, we can send it to another lab that has less of the lung production. >> sure. >> but this was the first time they ever tried that chemical out. they should never have let it out -- >> the chemicals didn't work and didn't kill it. >> didn't work. the chemical didn't work. it was still growing. we have a statement from the cdc. >> eric, why don't you -- >> this is the statement, quote, why this happened is a million-dollar question. these incidents can't happen. the safety of our employees is priority one and once this incident was realized, we moved
1:34 pm
swiftly to protect our workers. you mentioned the 2001 incidents. they basically were unsolved, i imagine. there was a hospital worker in new york died. they thought maybe she got it from mailing or from a subway or something. >> that's exactly what the level two lab does and why -- it's important once they kill the anthrax. they're trying to figure out a way to identify anthrax. if you get a white appoint der in an envelope, how do you know it's anthrax. that's what the level two lab is trying to figure out. >> so that chemical didn't work. >> it did work for 24 hours. it did work for 24 hours. just to give credit to cdc. it wasn't completely a huge mistake. it worked for 24 hours. they clean up everything. and then one of those ended up in the incubator. a week after they find out, wait a second. many things we find, now there's live and it actually grew.
1:35 pm
so they're making progress using chemicals to kill anthrax as opposed to radiation. now they're going to be treated with cipro and one of the questions -- >> those are antibiotics right? >> they have to take it for about two months. the public should not be panicking. they should not go out there and get piles of cipro. they are treating everybody with vaccine. >> what about their families that they're in touch with? >> again, there's no transmission from person to person. shop nobody should worry. for u.s. army and people in the lab, they can get a vaccine, six of them in about 18 months and prevent from getting anthrax. they probably be give them a boost in the next three months in order to control this. it's a very lethal drug. it killed about five people in 2001 and we just have to wait and see what happens here. >> the key here is the issue of aerosolizing it.
1:36 pm
they make it so it can fly through the air. of those 84 people, very unlikely anyone's going to get sick here, especially since they're on antibiotics. if they got sick, the kind that you kwet in the lungs is by far the worst. >> it's contained. they have it under control. >> absolutely. >> what marc is talking about spore is the bacteria that has a shell around it and that's why it's hard -- >> stay in the environment for a long time. stays there for a long time. >> okay. dr. oz, sitting on the hot seat this past week. coming up, why he was forced to publicly apologize and what you need to know about all the medical advice you hear on television. stick around for that.
