iirs commissioner sent a letter today saying irs should be able to turn over the lois lerner e mails by the end of the week and says he was hoping to provide a full response today but critical information is being collected and verified. many still pushing for a special prosecutor to investigate and some say there should be a financial incentive. >> we know the e mails can be found we just need people to help find them they'll forget the other, not just carrot, but the stick we reduce everybody's salary in the irs by 20% until they are produced >> they expect to have a report

on the missing e mail hz in weeks and late today, david camp from ways and means and subcommittee chair charles bustani asked how they learned of the hard drive crash. who told them, and more. the committees requesting all communications between five other irs employees with hard-drive crashes and white house, justice, epa, federal election commission and osha. yet, the president has gone back to calling this a phony scandal. >> sometimes news are just washington fights. they're fabricated issues. they're phony scandals that are generated. >> if the commissioner is connect and they will be turning over lois lerner e mails issue is the 4th of july holiday. that would be one of the best times to dump bad news, when
9:03 pm
americans are enjoying fire works and family and not focused on the irs mess. >> thank you, mike. >> thank you. >> joining us now, mark chasen, former chief speech writer for president bush. sounds like two scandals for the price of one? >> yes. that is what's happening. first a scandal of the improper targeting of conservative groups now we have a new scandal of the cover up of the first scandal, congress is now expanding the investigation of. look. it's been like pulling teeth to get information on this. in february, irs claims it knew the e mails had been lost two. years had been lost. in may they were still telling congress they're going to produce them in, june, they fessed up e mails had been lost. they did it on page 15 of a letter dumped to congress on a friday afternoon.
9:04 pm
like they're hoping nobody would notice two years of the e mails had disappeared so they're not being up front. that is why congress is going to investigate to find out what they knew, when they knew it. >> okay. back in may, 2013 we may remember the president came out and said he was angry, saying it was inexcusable. and he said he would work hand in hand with congress to get to the bottom of that. that is not happening. you mow he told our own bill o'reilly that there wasn't a smidgen of corruption this year. so let's take a look at the polling. how does the american public feel about it? were these accidentally destroyed? deliberately destroyed? it's not close. 76% say deliberately. only 12% think accidental. 12% say unsure. mark, do you think there will be enough public pressure at this point the white house is going to have to acknowledge this is
9:05 pm
legit, and do something about it? >> i think there is. you have to keep this in context of everything else going on. this is in the wake of the president you can keep your health care plan everybody believes he lied to the country. more than half think the president lies on matters of importance. so it's no surprise now, when you have this kind of cover up and this kind of drips and drabs of information coming out, that it look like they're covering up it's the president working with congress, i'd hate to see what obstruction looks like. >> all right. so now, the head of the irs has been behaving badly on capitol hill a couple times in the last year or so. he said we're doing everything we can we're going to get things as soon as we can and that is a hold holiday do you think that means we might get something they want to release on a friday?
9:06 pm
holiday 4th of july? what do you think we're going to get? >> we're have been put on notice there would be news that day. the democrats are upset with him. and one of the reasons why democrats are upset is him is because he lied to them, too. in the monday after those factor the lois lerner e mails being destroyed came out he met with the democratic chairman of the finance committee and failed to mention six other employees also had hard drives mysteriously crashed the irs is telling them he didn't mention to the democrats. owe democrats are getting lied to as well this, is something we've got to get to the bottom of. there is a scandal here the american people have a right to know whether their government was targeting the president's political opponents and whether the irs is trying to cover it up. >> a number of lawsuits on that
