of 7 feet as well as dangerous rip currents as millions of americans head to the beach for the fourth of july holiday. we are live in nags head with the latest. >> reporter: you're right. we're literally in the middle of the storm. there is the end of the calm that comes with the eye. it's been calm now here for almost one hour. most of the rain, as you can see, has symptstopped. the wind is starting to pick up. so much so our satellite dish might have to come down. the wind is so strong right now that even though it has rained for the last six or seven hours, looking out at the beach, it is pushing and we're protected bay building. you look at the beach and sand is flying in every direction. the wind is coming in right now, if you can look at the map, from the northwest. we think that the calm that came along with the eye of the storm is not going to be here for much

longer. we know the tide is going out and the waves don't look horrible right now behind us. because it's dark. as the lights come on, it's starting to lighten up a little bit here. we can see waves flashing by a nearby pier and they flash up what looks like about 100 feet in the area. a large wave makes a huge flash when it gets close. we look down the beach, it appears power is on in beach houses. it's on at the hotel even though it has been flickering. in the room where we've been doing our work, a lot of water damage already. now we're bracing more. >> there goes the shot there. >> when you report in the middle of a hurricane. it happens. we appreciate peter doing that. thank you. our coverage does continue now with kill devil hills.

are you live? >> reporter: good morning, heather. >> what is the latest? it looks like things are pretty calm there. >> reporter: right. what peter was saying. it's calm now. we're kind of in the eye of the storm here. we're going get hit shortly. it's going to -- as the hurricane whips around we're going to get the back end of the hurricane. the back end of the hurricane is one of the stronger points of the hurricane. even though it calmed down, with the wind is starting to pick a bit up. as it starts coming, since we're on the island barrier of the outer banks we're going to start getting large amounts of water and flooding coming from the other end of where we are. the beaches here, and that of this island, but on the other side of where we are. that's we're going get a lot of flooding and water and wind when the hurricane starts to whip back around. now, of course, they had at the

tip of the outer banks they had a mandatory evacuation order in case the flooding will happen, which it looks like it's coming pretty soon. >> michelle, thank you very much. janice just got the brand new 5:00 a.m. weather update. breaking news right now. what is arthur doing now? >> still 100 miles per hour sustained winds. so category 2. we still have a very well-defined eye here. so not much has changed within the 5:00 p.m. advisory. the storm is exiting quickly. it is moving to the northeast. there's is kill devil hills where the reporter was and peter experienced the eye of the storm, the calm weather as the backside now approaches. he's going to get a lot of rain and wind and even a little bit of storm surge on the backside. there's nags head and kill devil hills. they're done with the eye. there is the eye now over on open water across the atlantic and the worst of the storm in the next hour or so, enand then

it's out of here. here is the latest advisory as of 5:00 p.m. 100 miles per hour winds moving northeast at 23 miles per hour. at friday by 2:00 p.m. it's offshore. there's new jersey. we're going to see rough surf along the beaches across the northeast, the red flags will be flying over the beaches. make sure you are out of the water. it's going to be dangerous, essential with rip currents. and it's going to continue to move northeast by saturday around 2:00 a.m. watching cape cod, the islands here. tropical storm warning here. we could feel tropical storm force winds as well as rain, battering waves and moving into canada a strong tropical storm. there rot edare the advisories. gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour. we're not out of the woodsiest for coastal massachusetts and toward eastern dan. for the most part, we're going have a good looking weekend

is how much sand is being kicked up off the top of the beach. essentially because it rained pretty much all night. right now the wind gusts are strong enough that they will take your breath away. right now where we are in nags head, not a lot of rain. you can see that the tide has gone out. but the wind is just nasty. so far we are lucky to have power at our hotel, even though the lights have been flickering a little bit. and there has been a lot of water damage coming down through the ceiling at our hotel. i look down the beach and i see a few houses with lights on in each direction. we are now getting the rest of arthur. you can see -- wind really

rip currents. it shouldn't stop you from having fun in the show. >> it's a blow of the water from the shoreline out into the ocean past the breaking waves and seas. >> reporter: there are way the you can spot it. surfing the beach from the elevated level. >> the water leading out is somewhat of a rip current. you can see the difference in the color ration of the water. >> when scientists study the movement of the ocean, they pour a dye into it to trace the pattern of rip current. just in case you get one. we're going to show you a few tips. >> yep. ready for the water? >> yep. sounds good. let's go. now getting into the water was a little tough on the strong surf day. once we got out there. i learned three top tips for

surviving. >> you want to remain calm. do not panic when you're in a situation. the rip current will not pull you underwater. it'll only pull you out further. you need to remain calm. >> green you swim between them. red means no swimming. there's an an area of 80 yards of green yards you swim tree. >> swim parallel to the shore. maria is over her head. she's in a rip current right now. she should be moving parallel to the rip current. swimming b inming parallel to t and getting out of the rip current. >> now they're out of the rip current area and can work their way in. >> it takes a little bit of practice. how did i do? >> you might need some work. >> with a little bit of know how, surviving the risk can be as easy as a day at the beach.

there's nags head. our own peter just about an hour ago experiencing the calm of the eye of the storm. which is incredible, but then you get the backside, where we have the heavier rain bands moving in. you see the yellow and orange. it's about to move into nags head over the next 10 to 15 minutes. peter needs to be taking shelter. we'll check in with him in a few minutes. there are the wind gusts. easily 30, 40, 50 miles off the coast. and getting category 2 winds. there's the eye as it makes the way thwa toward the atlantic. one model showing the worst of the storm is almost over. as we head into friday evening cape cod and the islands will get the brunt of tropical storm force winds. heavier rain bands as well as the storm continues to accelerate to the north and east. we have storm advisories here

and going to become extra tropical. it's going to lose the tropicaler characteristic and become a nor'easter and move into canada. they are on alert for a strong extra tropical storm. as we go through time, gusts of 50 miles plus into the afternoon hours and overnight and moving into eastern canada as we head into saturday. there's the track of 5:00 a.m. we get a new report every hour now. we'll update you at the top of the hour. it's still a category 2 storm. it will continue to move north and eastward very quickly. look at the category one storm by 2:00 p.m. mainly offshore. keeping an eye out for coastal massachusetts and losing the tropical characteristics and becoming extra tropical and barrelling into eastern canada. forecast wind gusts we'll see the hurricane force winds across eastern north carolina. and again, as we make that approach to the eastern shores

the island. this bank here, one of the sand dunes is protecting a lot of that storm surge in wave from coming up and flooding out the area where the hotel and the residents are. what the concern is on the opposite side of the island as the hurricane begins to whip around. there's going to be a lot more concerns about flooding, storm surge, winds, and property damage. that is what we're going to be watching out soon for. hundred 1 miles per hour wind are going to be coming. right now they're calm. they issued the mandatory evacuation order on the southern end of the island. everyone was forced to flee that part. a lot of people are riding out the storm here. they're going to hang out until this thing is over. north carolina governor is saying, please, be careful. take the storm seriously. do not wear your stupid hat like
