it was calm to scope things out. we're starting to see a little bit of the storm surge now. the ocean is about as high -- as close, rather, to the real estate here on the beaches. we've seen it all day. we're supposed to be at low tide within about a half an hour. so that is not good. you see here there's just really powerful sandblasts that come in at whatever the wind gusts are right now. >> you weren't expecting that this morning. >> we are seeing some reports that a little bit farther down the way near hatteras highway 12 has been washed out or at least a few inches of water. we're also hearing officials, some reports that officials don't believe that many of the 57,000 or so permanent residents here left. so everybody stayed, is waking up on the 4th of

july to this. back to you in new york. >> peter, have you seen people on the beach? i know there's always crazy surfers at this time when they're told to evacuate and they go down there even though they're not supposed to. >> not today. if you look out here, the waves are so bad. it's really getting stirred up. as you see, the surf comes this way. but the wind, the 100 miles-per-hour gusts are coming from the other direction. it's very choppy. right now the water does appear to be surging. it's not really a rain problem right now. it's all wind and we've got debris so i'm going to go inside. >> stay safe. he mentioned a lot of residents did not evacuate. category 2 storm, it's not something to play around with. at the same time they have

dealt with this in the past. i saw a lot of pictures from friends who used to live in wilmington, north carolina. they are bringing in the patio furniture, taping up the windows. they've done it before. >> they've gone to the grocery store, got the supplies. janice dean is in the weather center. >> we're almost done. by the end of "fox & friends," peter doocy should be seeing clear skies. we did have a landfall category 2. this is the strongest storm that has made landfall across the u.s. since 2008. so it's been some time. this was a formidable storm, and you can see the eye making its path over cape lookout around 11:15 last night. the storm is exiting, so let's zoom in to where our own peter doocy is. i saw her in the 5 a.m. hour and he experienced the

eye of the storm, the very calm. then you get the backside of the storm which is what he is seeing now with the rain, wind and battering waves. in the next hour hoos going to see -- in the next hour he's going to see improving conditions. wind gusts in excess of 40 to 50 miles an hour. the eye is out to the atlantic. the storm is accelerating. a new advisory in the next hour or so. still a hurricane. by friday afternoon look how fast this thing moves. we'll still be watching cape cod and the islands where we have a tropical storm warning in effect. that's the one area we're going to keep an eye on as we head into friday and saturday. east coast looks good. barbecues can be moved to saturday and everybody will be having fun. >> janice tracking this for us. let's head out west to where things are getting heated along the border. did you see the protests

out in murrieta, california, where there were bus loads of illegal immigrants who had been flown in from texas because they weren't processed in texas. they got on airplanes that cost the taxpayers astronomical, put them on airplanes, fly them into california to be processed at this center but local residents weren't having any of it so they had to be rerouted. >> it was like a human shield. this paints a picture of how desperate these folks are starting to feel. they're thinking about their bottom line, thinking about their wallet, also thinking about their safety with these illegal immigrants coming in, very often comes fears of crime and also disease. we have been assured by the border patrol that they are being screened as these illegal immigrants are coming through. but we've had doctors on the channel who said these are diseases sometimes that they're bringing in that our doctors are not used to seeing, things they read about in textbooks and are not used to seeing them at home.

things like leprosy and scabies. >> it is a catastrophe. we want immigration in this country, want it to be a melting pot. but as americans you want to be able to control what's in the pot, control the ingredients, the temperature, make sure the pot doesn't overflow. that is our right as american citizens. if you have people that are homeless, have diseases, invading neighborhoods and you weren't made aware they were coming, that is a big problem. they were sending these kids to the hamptons, i think there would be protests there too. >> another set of buses are expected to be arriving today and another set of protests set to be unfolding this afternoon there in murrieta, california. now president obama, we know he's heading down to texas for a fund-raiser to help out democrats who are running for reelection in the fall and also running for new election in the fall. governor rick perry and others down there saying, mr. president, get down here. this situation is only

getting worse. listen to the governor. >> nobody's doing any of these children the slightest favor by delaying a rapid return to their countries of origin which in many cases is not mexico. allowing them to remain here will only encourage the next group of individuals to undertake this very, very dangerous and life-they thening journey -- and life-threatening journey. and those who come must be sent back to demonstrate in no uncertain terms that risking your lives on the top of those trains and the ways that they are coming here, it's not worth that. >> what is the issue here? they're coming on tops of trains from honduras, el salvador, quawt mall low. not really coming from mexico. they are being ferried through crisis. we heard nancy pelosi say this isn't a crisis, it is

an opportunity. don't expect democrats to cut off the seive. sheila jackson said why don't you just bring lollipops. listen. >> the children should be given the basic coverage of the law that is in existence today that will allow us to treat them in a humane way. these are the most orderly, based children who simply want an opportunity to be free from the murderous conditions of which they flee. i took lollipops along with mile colleagues in to those detention centers with children were. i wasn't armed. i wasn't fearful for my life. this is not a national security crisis. this is a humanitarian crisis. >> nice prop there. i wonder what flavor she brought. one of the four major food groups she brought along. >> these kids are malnourished by the way, so bring them sugar. look, why are they coming here? this idea that suddenly all of these kids are coming here is because parents are

being threatened by the cartels in these different countries to make money. they're basically getting money from the united states government. you're being used and held as ransom. send our kids back but we're going to have to pay you to send our kids back. it's not like mexico where we can bring these individuals back to their country. el salvador, guatamala, honduras. we won't take these kids back unless you pay. >> i don't understand one thing. why don't we put the g.p.s. system in the lollipops. that way we can track these kids. i think that is a good idea. i don't understand what she's thinking. if you're a marine in the united states and you accidentally cross over the border into mexico, they will throw you in jail. but if you illegally cross into our country, we'll give you a lollipop. >> most of these kids are babies, so i don't know they'll be crawling too far. we should be taking care of these kids as best we can. but we've got to stop the flow of these people coming across the border.

>> lollipops do not encourage that. >> either way you look at it, this is a crisis. and it is unbelievable the president is going to be there for a fund-raiser and doesn't plan on checking out what's going on on the border. some of the stories making headlines, a trailer loaded with fireworks explodes near a texas high school killing one person. it happened as a local club was setting up for a 4th of july show. three other people were hurt. that show now canceled. the father accused of intentionally leaving his son to die in a hot car was allegedly sexting at the time. police say he was sending messages and pictures to six different women while his 22-month-old son was locked in a car. prosecutors saying harris wanted a child-free life. harris being held without bail and could face the death penalty. a seven-year-old boy has been given an honor less than 100 people in the united states received.

andrew starr who suffers from a rare genetic disorder has been made an honorary marine. three generations of the starr family has been in the marines and his father wanted to make sure he is able to follow the tradition. >> when i was getting ready to retire, they said what would you like as part of your retirement ceremony. i said i want my son to be an honorary marine. >> andrew had the honor bestowed upon him and was given a special coin from a lieutenant general. the starr's marine tradition continues. >> as we celebrate america's birthday, we have to honor the men and women protecting our freedom. we're live from baghram in afghanistan next. >> remember those photos that enraged animal rights activists of a cheerleader turned big game hunter. facebook responding to the controversy and you're not going to like what they did.

on the holidays. today, independence day, we started off with a barbecue. we've got sporting events, volleyball, a three-point competition. as you can see behind me, we're getting ready to set up for the festivities for tonight. that kicks off with 100 personnel from all branches reaffirming their oath. there will be one lucky winner, a 2015 ford mustang or f-150. that's followed up with the band vertical horizon that will perform a concert. hopefully we'll make it through the evening with no fireworks. >> good. i hope everybody stays safe and enjoys themselves. i know the enemy is probably not taking the day off. the campaign in afghanistan right now, i guess it's winding down. the president wants to withdraw troops by 2016. we're seeing what's happening in iraq.

we were talking about great baseball history in this area. this speech is so amazing. i remember seeing this as a kid thinking that may be one of the greatest speeches of all time and yet he was not a speech giver. >> there is probably only a couple of recordings of lou gehrig's voice. when do you ever hear lou gehrig. there was no post-game radio interviews. people in the stands that day were really, many of them were hearing lou gehrig for the first time. he could have hired the best speech writers of his time or of our time and they could not have done better than that speech. >> why do you think it was so powerful? >> it was one man who knew -- if he didn't know he was going to die, he might have been hopeful he knew what the prognosis of a.l.s. was and that it was going to be a debilitating disease for which there was no cure and yet he stood in front of 62,000 people behind those microphones, which was a rare thing for him, and basically said he was the luckiest man on the

this table on its side so it wouldn't blow away in fear of more wind happening here since they are about 100 miles per hour still. over here, this is the sand dunes. on the opposite side the beach. just a while ago we saw some people try to go up and take a look at the waves there. i asked them what did they think. they came back down and said that was a stupid idea. exactly what north carolina governor pat mccrory people do not put your stupid hat on and take the storm seriously and be safe. what's going to happen when that back end of the hurricane starts whipping through, it's going to post a lot of concern on the opposite side of the island barrier here. on the other side, that is where there is going to be a lot of storm surge, possible flooding and already yesterday in hatteras island county, that's where they did the mandatory evacuation order. but people are here, are confident that the storm is going to move fast and by the end of the day they're going to be able to enjoy the 4th of july.

marva. by 10:00, by the end of "fox & friends" this will be offshore. however we're still looking at coastal massachusetts for effects. they could get tropical storm force winds. there is elizabeth city right there. we had our own peter doocy still getting the potential for very strong winds and battering waves as well as heavy rainfall. there is your forecast radar. there is virginia beach. there is the eye right now. it's going to move really quickly. there is cape cod, that's 2 p.m. it's offshore. long island you can still see rain and gusty winds. a blustery day along the northeast shoreline. that is 7 p.m. friday. tropical storm warnings as they could get tropical force winds and heavier rain bands and moving into coastal canada, eastern canada where they could get a very strong tropical

still getting wind gusts from 30 to 40 miles an hour offshore. the worst of it is really almost over. we are going to watch cape cod and the islands throughout the day, this afternoon, into the evening as we think this storm could sort of brush the coast of eastern massachusetts as it transitions into an extra tropical storm. so there is the track a. brand-new track at 5:00. we'll bring you the very latest. moving very quickly. by friday afternoon, it's offshore. still keeping an eye on cape cod, the islands including nantucket and moving into eastern canada, friday night into saturday. we have tropical storm advisories, tropical storm warnings for cape cod and the islands here where we could have gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour, as well as the outer bands with heavy rainfall potential and all along the east coast, you're probably best to stay out of the water until this storm is well offshore. the weekend going to be blustery across portions of the northeast. otherwise we can have some barbecue this weekend. that's the good news.

they're being checked in and so forth and then where are they going to go? they might be taken to pennsylvania where they'll be housed and cared for because we don't have the resources to care for those humanitarian crisis. >> we've seen these angry, angry town hall meetings. people packing in trying to talk to lawmakers and hoping that the word gets to the president. we have to do something to change these policies you put in place. they put these illegal immigrants under the impression they can come here and once they get here, they can stay here. democrats, what are we going to hear from them? is the problems that they're starting to see, is it going to be making them defeat the president? they're starting to say this is just a humanitarian crisis. they're trying to flee from their home countries, from honduras and guatemala and just being filtered through mexico because they're scared for their lives. are they simply looking for a free pass? here is what charles krauthammer has to say. >> the administration says it's a result of the crime and the poverty in central america, as if crime and poverty have not

good morning. fox news alert now. hurricane arthur moving offshore and away from north carolina after pounding the coast overnight with heavy rain and 100 mile-an-hour winds. now there is a new threat, flooding. >> michelle has been in kill devil's hills all morning long. how are condition there is this morning? >> reporter: good morning. conditions have gotten a lot better over the last couple hours. the rain has let up. the wind is dying down a little bit as hurricane arthur continues to move its way out into the east coast, and it's continuing to move up the east seaboard. a lot of concerns for when this -- the hotel decided to put this down on the ground because they were worried that it was going to blow over in the winds. a lot of residents decide to go ride out the storm because they didn't think this was going to be that big of a storm. category 2, though, 100 miles per hour winds, a big deal. authorities here were battleing

with trying to make sure people were abiding by these warnings. lots of people decided to ride it out. about 1,000 people did flee because they were worried about their fourth of july weekend plans getting ruined today. hatteras island, another area of especially flooding and concern there. there is only one road in and out of that region. the highway 12. that's why they issued everyone to get out of there. but thankfully people, now that arthur is moving out of this region, people are going to try and enjoy the fourth of july later today. guys? >> we hope so. michelle live for us this morning. now let's get up to janis dean in the weather center track the latest on this storm. >> i just want to point out we're really early into the hurricane season. when you look at tropical activity, usually you see the peak around august, september. here we are in the beginning of july and we're already talking about a category 2 hurricane. so perhaps this will give folks a heads up. this is the strongest hurricane that we've had make landfall across the u.s. since 2008.

so where is the storm right now? the bulk of the hurricane is moving offshore. you can still see that developing eye, or the developed eye that's really starting -- looks a little bit of deterioration. we are going to get a new advisory at 8:00 o'clock. as of now, it's still 100 miles per hour storm. so category 2. let's take a look at the forecast radar. there is virginia beach and there is the storm offshore. still going to see those outer bands, potential for rain. certainly heavy surf and rip currents will be a problem all up and down the east coast. then as we head into this afternoon, watching it very carefully just south of cape cod, the islands, long island, you could also see some outer bands and then we have tropical storm warnings in effect. we could see winds gusts of up to 50 miles an hour. those heavy rain bands moving in towards eastern canada overnight tonight and into tomorrow. but for the most part, we'll have an improving weekend as we get into saturday and sunday, which is great news for the folks up and down the east

back from shooting some video in a residential neighborhood on the sound side. not too far from here, about 3 miles away from here. there are some homes, there is a neighborhood now that weigh found without any trouble. but is threatened by water. you look at the water, it's not puddles. there is a lot of water there. so we are keeping an eye on that right now. again, this area took a direct hit from arthur last night. the eye of the storm actually passed directly over us. now that the sun has started to come out, emergency officials are out. they're telling people not to go out unless they absolutely need to. but kind of a sign of the times since this is the first hurricane of the 2014 season, emergency officials tweeted out a link to a bunch of north carolina department of transportation cameras and they're saying, if you've got to go out somewhere, click on the link first, check the intersection that you need, check the road that you need to

still a category 2. most of the storm is now offshore, which is great news. let's zoom in to where peter doocy is right now. still going to see blustery conditions, 40, 50 miles per hour gusts, as well as some of these outer rain bands. so there is kill devil hills, nags head there. you're out of the rain, still seeing the winds. it looks like we have another rain band that's going to push in over the next couple of minutes. we will watch for that. but really the worst of the storm is over. people can assess what the damage brought overnight last night. there is your forecast wind gusts. the bulk of the winds staying offshore until we get towards the afternoon hours and into the evening. south of cape cod, the islands, we still have the potential for tropical storm force winds. there is your track. still category 2. it's going to accelerate rapidly northeastward. still going to get a punch across eastern canada and watching cape cod and the

part of the outer banks. about 21,000 people without power this morning and flooding is certainly a concern in the southern part of the outer banks here. especially in hatteras island county down there. and they decided to issue a mandatory evacuation from that region because that was one of the problems where they thought it was going to be a lot of flooding, storm surge. there is only one highway in and out of that region, that's highway 12. so local officials here wanted to make sure people were out of there. back here, we expect the clouds to leave us in a couple hours, which is good news for those who want to try and salvage the rest of their fourth of july weekend. a lot of residents just decided to ride it out. we talked to a few today and they didn't even think the storm was too bad. although it's stale category 2 storm making its way up the eastern coast. guys? >> thank you, michelle. we saw some of those roadways that are now impassable.

we're starting to see some of those images. janis dean has been tracking the storm. with power outages, they're not able to upload images. it looks pretty bad. >> it was a category 2 storm. we haven't had a storm of this strength in many years, since 2008. making landfall. so this is what it looked like around 11:15 p.m. last night. sustained winds, 100 miles per hour. still a category 2 storm. the landfall was around the cape lookout area. this storm is moving quickly. it's now offshore. we do have gusty winds. we're going to see those outer bands all along the mid-atlantic, up toward the northeast throughout the day today. but this is moving quickly, which is great news. it's not going to be a prolonged event. looking at some of the wind gusts, 30, 40, 50 miles per hour offshore. that's where you have the higher sustained winds, but we're still going to see those blustery conditions throughout the day today. stay out of the water, all the way up the east coast. it will be very dangerous with rough surf, as well as rip

currents. so the track will bring this storm very close to a brush, cape cod, the islands. that's where we have tropical storm warnings. we could see those outer bands. heavy rain possible. then toward eastern canada. they have advisories up there from environment canada. the forecast rainfall, most of the rain remaining offshore. all up and down the northeast coast, we'll have a chance of showers throughout the afternoon and evening. but by the weekend, things are going to really improve. so we'll get those barbecues in, maybe a day later. >> that means so much to these beach town communities. very often they depend on the fourth of july weekend. that's their bread and butter. >> that's right. they'll hold those fireworks for one more day. >> thanks. as the v.a. touts improved access for veterans, a disturbing new story is out about the albuquerque v.a. one veteran died feet from the emergency waiting room. he was waiting for an ambulance. he collapsed in the hospital

cafeteria just 500 yards from the e.r. it took 30 minutes for an ambulance to arrive to take him from one building to the other, which is just about a five-minute walk. imagine driving down the road when all of a sudden, your car dives right into a sink hole. that's exactly what happened to one woman and her son in rural illinois. heavy rains opened up massive sinkhole in the middle of the roadway, causing her car to plummet inside. she frantically called 911. >> i am underneath the ground. >> you are underneath the ground at this time? >> then things took a turn when another driver hit the ink sinkhole and get this, that driver went right over her car. >> oh, god no! another car! >> on top of you? >> yes, went over me. >> oh, my god. oh, my god. >> my son, i need help. my son.

good morning. hurricane arthur brings new fears about what beach goers can expect this holiday weekend. the hurricane is bring dangerous rip currents. >> what happens if you're caught in one? they are scary. our own maria molina live in centerville, ohio, where you don't have to worry about ocean currents. but maria recent will he hit the beach to explain all this to us. >> that's right. with hurricane arthur, a big concern are rip currents this weekend. we want to make sure you and your family know how to stay safe if you head to parts of the east coast over the weekend. here are a few tips. across america's beaches last year, almost 30 drownings occurred because swimmers getting caught up in rip currents. while it may seem like a scary statistic, it shouldn't stop you from having fun in the sun this summer. >> rip current is from the shore line into the ocean, past the breaking waves and out past the breaking sea. >> there are ways you can spot a rip current with the naked eye. the first thing, surveying the

beach from an elevated level. >> this white foam on the top of the ocean right here leading out is somewhat of a rip current. you can visually see the difference in the coloration of the water. >> reporter: just to give you a better visual, when scientists study the movement of the ocean, they often pour a harmless dye into it to trace the patterns of rip currents. spotting a rip current is half the battle. just in case you get caught in one, we're going to show awe few tips. right? >> yep. ready to get in the water? >> let's go. now, getting into the water was a little tough on the strong surf day. once we got out there, i learned the three top picks for surviving the rip. >> the first tip and the most important is you always want to remain calm. do not panic when you're in this situation. a rip current will not pull you under. it will only pull you out further into the ocean. remain calm so you can swim back in. >> two, keep your eye out for those flags. >> glean, swim between the green

flags and the red flags, no swimming. also signified by this symbol on the flag. within an area of 80 yards of green flag you can swim between. >> finally, to break free from the rip, swim parallel to the shore. >> she's in over her head and in a rip current. she should be moving parallel to the rip current. you see they're swimming parallel to the ocean to get out of that rip current area and get into calmer water. now they're out of the rip current area. they can start to work their way in toward the shore line. >> it does take a little practice. how did i do? am i going to be a lifeguard? >> maybe not today. you might need some work. >> with a little know how, surviving the rip can be as easy as a day at the beach. >> looks like you had some fun. >> the first time we went into the ocean was actually a little dangerous. i had to redo that part. we hope everybody has a safe and
