back of the book segment tonight, if president obama losing the national media, his administration is over. indications are, that might be happening. >> whether it was v.a., whether it was the healthcare debacle. whether it was isis in iraq. which is -- boy, this all came up on us faster than we have expected examine. we have had our eye on this. but, boy, we didn't expect

it to be this bad. >> the border patrol holds the immigrants only long enough it process them. then as we saw firsthand, releases them at local greyhound stations where they are free to go anywhere. >> i know that, you know, your unfortunate job is to say what has >> your unfortunate job is to say what has been done, but what has been done so far has not stemmed the far. the white house can say it all they want, but at some point, people are going to ask, and right now, your own democrats on the hill are asking why it was permitted to happen, to get to this stage. >> joining us, lauren ashburn and howard kurtz. you think the national media is turning on the president now? >> i been saying for months the mainstream media are turning against the president, and even the folks at msnbc not getting the thrill anymore. this is the third or fourth problem in a row. and the liberal commentators are disillusions, bummed, they need

medication. this is their guy. when it comes to managing the government and crises, it's hard for them to defend them. >> i haven't seen that on msnbc, they still either avoid the issue or throw out rank propaganda, but i have seen in the straight news precincts, they are starting to really come down on the president. what have you seen, lauren? >> well, just this evening on msnbc, chris matthews actually said that the president was conflicted. he looked conflicted. and other guests said, it really looked tired and he looked unhappy. >> conflicted about what? not that i care about what happens over there, but what was the point? conflicted about what? >> the point is he's conflicted as he's standing there in texas, not going to the border, that he doesn't know quite what to do. >> he's not conflicted about going to the border. it's erroneous. he didn't want to go to the border. it was never debated. he was going to play pool and go

down and give a speech in denver. because, howard, if he goes to the border, it brings more attention to the failure of the border. it's very simple, is it not? >> yes, but optics matter. the president doesn't want to be seen in texas because then he owns the problem, but at the same time, it looks like he's avoiding it. >> he is avoiding it, howard. >> i know. >> it doesn't look like it. he is avoiding it. it's the house of representatives' fault. they did it. >> he is doing the blinking. >> we also saw this with the v.a. scandal and the missing irs e-mails. the president seems to be behind the curve, and the regular reporters, people who try to be fair, they have largely written barack obama off, they think he's a lame duck. >> here's the reason, one of the reasons that this is happening against him now. is that believe it or not, bill, maybe your viewers wouldn't even
5:53 pm
believe this, but mainstream media, reporters are actual human beings first. and this crisis is too big for them to ignore. when you see those poor children lying on the ground, covered in a paper blanket, how can that not affect how you cover this issue? >> well, it can't. but you're very misguided if you think reporters are human beings. i'm sorry. i have been in the business for 38 years and they aren't. anyway, we appreciate you guys coming on. back with tip of the day. a television show tonight that may shed light on mexican corruption. the tip, moments away.

all real problems. bill from california, your fact-based talking points on immigration were the best i have heard. we spend $25 billion on illegal immigrants. mr. o'reilly, i love the factor but i'm confused by your call to put the national guard on the border. what would they do? they would control the flash points like the rio grande valley, and they would prevent folks from physically setting foot on u.s. soil. you couldn't drive a jet ski up and get off because there would be two guardsmen going, back there. if they have to push you in the water, they push you in the water. they would turn around the intruders and take into custody anyone guiding them. jim in san francisco, who wrote your talking points yesterday? as you know, i did. i write everything i say on the factor, which i believe is unique in tv journalism for an anchor. we don't even have a writeren staff.
