preparation for a possible ground invasion. hours after the air force struck a mosque they say was hiding weapons belonging to hamas. john huddy has the latest. >> reporter: israel's defense forces are urging people to evacuate homes saying the air strikes and artillery strikes upon hamas targets will only increase. over the last 15 minutes there was another heavy air strike in close proximity to our location, one of three now within the past hour. you can hear the f-16 roaring in and the missile when it hits the impact is so strong it shakes the building. the concussion so strong it kind of almost knocks you off your feet. this is one of many air strikes

over the past since all of this started on monday. and these strikes in particular in this location i can tell you this there have been rockets launched from the area here. so presumably these strikes are targeting hamas locations. we don't know that for sure but that is what we believe based on what we have seen and heard on the ground here. as you mentioned, the death toll continues to rise. the last count was 135. more than 1,000 palestinians injured. i bet as we speak that number continues to increase. earlier today we went to the main hospital here in gaza city to see the conditions. take a look at what we saw. we are outside here in gaza city. as you can imagine it has been extremely busy here. people are being brought in from an air strike. it is absolute chaos. cars have been flying in here. you can see just how chaotic it

is. what do you want people who are watching to know about what is going on here? >> we want people to stop attacking the civilians in gaza. >> reporter: there is a shortage of supplies and you lose electricity for hours at a time. are you able to do your jobs at this point? well, israel's military says it is targeting these locations because they are being used by hamas. having said that, again, we are expecting these air strikes to continue to increase, to intensify over the next couple hours. i can tell you every now and again we hear fighter jets ask the hum, the constant hum of drones overhead. >> john huddy giving us a clear look right from the center of

the chaos. john huddy, thanks a lot. >> of course, weary after more than a decade of war u.s. policy has been turning away from intervention actions. how will this affect the crisis as the death toll rises? we will take a look later in the show. officials in eastern ukraine say at least four civilians were killed by government artillery fire damaging several apartment buildings. this comes a day after 19 ukrainian troops were killed by pro-russian forces in the region. the ukrainian government claims its air strikes have killed about 1,000 rebels. meantime, vice president joe biden spoke with the ukrainian president by phone expressing support for his efforts to convene a meeting to discuss a possible cease fire. the iraqi government said about 4,000 volunteers are being sent to the city to bolester

troops. this video showing the town being attacked by i.s.i.s. fighters earlier this year. the vast majority of volunteers are shiite who answered a call from the top cleric to defend the country from sunni militants. ramadi is the capital. secretary of state john kerry says afghanistan's two presidential candidates will honor the results of an audit of the election runoff ballot. secretary kerry meeting with the candidates today in kabul, both contesting the election results. next kerry travels for talks on ir iran's nuclear program with the foreign ministers from britain, france and germany. the decisions to skip the talks could jeopardize their success. president obama is back in d.c. from his trip to texas.

while there he did not visit the border or any of the overflowing detention centers but the president is asking for nearly $4 billion from congress in emergency funding to deal with the crisis as tensions rise and border communities forced to deal with an influx of illegal immigrants from central america. molly is live in washington with the latest. molly, do you know the president was going to be able to get congress to sign on to the spending package for the border that he is asking for? >> probably not with $3.7 billion price tag for things like more immigration judges and more detention centers. some republicans say that is too much money to spend without securing the border first. the white house acknowledges the president's spending package faces a tough battle in congress. >> we are open to working with democrats and republicans in congress to get this done. the thing that i would point out, though, is that the president has moved quickly.

to be very clear about what specifically needs to be funded. and we would like to see republicans back up their rhetoric with the kind of urgent action that this situation merits. >> kentucky republican congressman hal rogers says his committee may approve some money for immediate needs on the border but doubts the president's spending package would pass as is. >> let's talk about governor rick perry, texas, saying that there is something the president can do right now. so what is it that governor perry is talking about? >> send in the national guard to stop waves of illegal immigrants coming across the border and filling up the detention centers. texas republican governor rick perry says the president has the ability to stop this, quote, humanitarian crisis by calling the pentagon. >> the president of the united states can pick up the phone to

the d.o.d. and direct them to send the 1,000 national guard troops because that will send the quickest message that this border is secure. if we start securing the border all of these issues that are facing us begin to dwinding and begin to diminish. >> the white house contends it would be a more sustainable solution to send 20,000 additional border patrol agents rather than 1,000 national guard troops. >> thanks for that report. a lightning strike killing one woman and injuring seven others while hiking in rocky mountain national park in colorado. >> lightning tends to be one of the major killers. it's sad because it seems like most summers somebody is struck by lightning. even experienced hikers who are near the end of the hike can be caught up by how fast the storms

form in the mountains. >> strong to severe storms are expected to develop across the midwest today. forecasters say damaging winds, hail and isolated tornadoes are possible across the region. the repeat sexual offender known as the pillow case rapist is out free after nearly two decades behind bars. and the rural california community where he is living is scared. christopher hubbard admitted to attacking dozens of women being closely monitored after his release from a state mental hospital. that is not enough for many neighbors. dominic joining us with the latest. >> reporter: a very vocal protest from local residents. a group of women called the ladies of the lake because this is in an area called lake los angeles about 80 miles north of los angeles they put together a protest where they have been revving motorcycles to try to

distract him and have been on bull horns shouting insults and trying to haze him and intimidate him to get him to leave. they say as long as he is there they are not leaving. listen. >> we are making him very uncomfortable. we are going to keep putting pressure. the more people out here the more uncomfortable he is feeling. if it is a week, two weeks, a month i will be here every day. >> the county prosecutors want him sent away. they are appealing a ruling by the santa clara superior court that decided he should live in los angeles county. they put him there because he was born and raised. the locals think that is no reason why he should go back there. he has lived in the area, he is a repeat offender. he has two guards on 12 hour shifts who are looking after him around the clock. they are actually protecting him.

the suggestions are that from some locals that harm could come if they are not careful. >> him being here places the whole community in danger. we don't want to hurt him. we don't want to see him get hurt. we don't want him to be here. we feel like we have been dutmpd on. this type of person should never be released. he has hurt many, many women. >> at least 44 women over 18 years is where his criminal record currently stands. officials say he is staying inside his house for the time being apparently cleaning walls and floor. he won't be leaving the property anytime soon. food is being delivered in because they are worried that should he go on the streets or go shopping nearby that he may get attacked. it is starting to get tense there and certainly locals are

far the u.s. has been signaling limited support by reiterating concerns about the growing violence there. with more on u.s. foreign policy and its influence on the escalating crisis in gaza, let's bring in jamie weinstein. hi. >> how are you? >> i'm well. thank you. if you think the u.s. policy is turning away from interventionist actions and if you think so, how would this affect the way the u.s. is handling the current crisis or brink of war circumstances between the israelis and palestinians? >> there is no question that after 13 years of war in iraq and afghanistan, there is some war weariness in the united states. we should remember that we still have soldiers fighting in afghanistan. but i don't think it's going to affect what's going on in israel in any way. israel has historically never asked american soldiers to fight its wars, so they're not asking for american boots on the ground in any way. congress historically has been very pro israel and last week

passed the house of representatives by a voice vote, resolution strongly supporting israel. i don't see that any nonintervention that may or may not be within the american political scene right now affecting what's happening in israel. >> president obama says that he's willing to negotiate a cease fire between the two sides and also, all 15 members of the u.n. city council today responding to this crisis for the first time calling for a cease fire as well. we had ambassador talking to eric shaun earlier saying, in effect, israel won't stop until hamas is anilated. do you have any idea or speculation how or when this current conflict ends? >> i have no idea when it ends. one would imagine that if israel thought they had a chance to really deliver a big blow to hamas, that would really cripple it, they would go for that because frankly, that is actually a plan for peace.

you can't imagine a peace deal between israelis and palestinians as long as hamas, who has a charter, that not only calls fort destruction of israel, but murder of jews generally, then i encourage the viewers to read their charter. it's pretty chilling. that as long as they are a major player in the palestinian political scene, and at this moment they control gaza, you can't imagine a peace deal happening because hamas is -- they believe it's a religious mandate, that there be no peace. that there be no israel. >> judy miller brought up yesterday and pointed out that listen, if you're talking about a negotiation on one side, you have the israeli government, an official administration, and then you have hamas, which is a terrorist org disrupting the other side, palestinians, how do you play by different sets of rules? >> completely different sets of rules. i think had is a very important point to make. there is a big moral difference here. on one side you have israel and the idf that is calling some of

the targets where they are about to take out to warn the civilian population around there. they find their cell phone, call them and tell them to leave. on the other hand you have hamas which not only indiscriminately seeks to kill israeli civilians, but as of earlier last week, was on tv, a spokesman, and told its own civilian population to ignore those warnings. why? because the more civilian casualties within gaza of their own population, the more propaganda value they get from that. to an american audience, to those who believe in kind of civilized discourse and civilized warfare, that's a chilling thing to say, that you are hoping that your civilian population will actually run and be killed by bombs instead of run away when they have an opportunity. >> look, i don't care what side you think is right or wrong. you just don't want to see people, civilians, being killed. that's the really unfortunate part. i think you agree on that, too,
