tv Sunday Housecall FOX News July 13, 2014 1:30pm-2:01pm PDT
1:30 pm
to talk to me, facebook me and tweet me at the address below. that's it for today. i hope you enjoyed the show and are learning to be more of a healthy you. i'm arthel nevadaville time now for sunday house call. >> joining us as always dr. mark siegel and author of the inner pulse, unlocking the secret code of sickness and health. >> and dr. david samadi chairman and professor of you're rollgy. good to see you doctors. >> happy sunday. >> we're going to begin this week with the increasing concerns about what many are describing as a serious public health crisis along the u.s./mexico border. tens of thousands of illegal
1:31 pm
immigrants entering the country without undergoing medical screening. talk more about this for me. >> health and human services is calling this is humanitarian crisis right now. i spoke to hhs and they said we have an unaccompanied alien children program. what that means is that children are coming into the united states illegally. and believe me, david and i are practicing physicians. and we have compassion for these children. if we took care of them, we wouldn't differentiate for one second. if children are not screened, they can bring diseases in and some of these diseases are things we usually vaccinate for like measles and chicken pox. there's been skab byes outbreaks. you get really itchy, it's
1:32 pm
highly contagious. there's more tuberculosis being found in the areas of texas where these children are being sheltered. so i'm concerned that without the centers for disease control more actively involved. they are at a level three alert right now meaning they're on 24 hour alert. but hhs is taking the lead. i want cdc more involved to try and keep things more contained and get in there and get the children properly screened and cared for. >> i think it's a very difficult situation over here because there's the humanitarian part of it that we all really feel bad for these kids. the thought of parents really giving their kids to smugglers to bring them across the border not knowing if they're going to see them again, it's unimaginable. you have to keep that in mind. politics aside, they are still human beings.
1:33 pm
the issue now -- there are medical issues that we're talking about. that's what "sunday housecall" is about. they're bringing in certain diseases that transmittable easily to other people. whether it's sexually transmitted disease, drug-resistant at the burke low assist and measles and the fact that they're going to buss and airports and planes, they're going to give it to everybody else. that's a huge concern. >> do they get innoculated? let's say they have tuberculosis. do they get it at the processing site before they go somewhere? we're seeing reports of them going to illinois, okay okay, michigan. they're talking about new york state. so would the public health services actually let a young child who has tuberculosis get on a plane or a bus and go to another state. >> if they're aware of this.
1:34 pm
first of all, there's a shortage of doctors over there. since the beginning of the year, we have about 50,000 of these kids come across. by september, it's going to be about 90,000. that's a huge volume and we don't have enough people there. if they see someone with high fever and coughing signs, of course they're going to pull them aside. cdc as marc mentioned, there are guidelines as far as screening. whether you come legal or illegal, you have to go through a series of screening. these kids, they're not being screened to the point and that's why you could be missing. if they don't tell you whether they've had vaccinations, you would never know. >> if you're a 9-year-old american kid, you get the mmr. >> here's the deal, the problem is these kids are not getting screened. so let's say they go into one of these communities, right,
1:35 pm
bricking in tuberculosis or whatever that we're talking about, what are the people in the community, what can they be looking out for to make sure they may not be exposed? >> excellent question. i want to emphasize a point david made. if they're aware of it. in other words, hhs is not aware of it in time. they will screen accompanied children in a program they have, but if they're not aware in time, they bring it out into the community. in the areas, pediatricians should be looking for unexplained rashes. tuberculosis is hard to transmit. you're going to see more. and here's the most important thing. if you have kids that are going to be going to school and they haven't been vaccinated with that mmr/v vaccine, get it now. if you're near one of those camps, you have to be vaccinated. >> by problem with the whole thing is, the diseases we're
1:36 pm
talking about are so rare in this country because they're already e raduated. with all due respect, we just . so the first thing that comes to his mind is not going to be tuberculosis, it's going to be sko many other things that can be confusing with. they are putting these kids in almost like an army base. they're all in one room. even if half of them are doing well and have the vaccines, the other half are going to pass on the lica and tuberculosis. that's the key. >> the key, david just said, they're close together, they're crowded together, and that's how you spread disease. >> we need more doctors at the border to put in the screens and catch them there. and then whatever the politics pans out, that's a whole different story. >> certainly if they can get a handle on this. >> concern. >> very.
1:37 pm
>> it could be a problem. >> cdc more involved. speaking of back here at home and a trend among our young people, anybody like hookah smoking? we're going to hear what they say is so appealing about this trend. but doctors say huh-uh on "sunday housecall." a body at rest tends to stay at rest...cs... while a body in motion tends to stay in motion. staying active can actually ease arthritis symptoms. but if you have arthritis,
1:38 pm
staying active can be difficult. prescription celebrex can help relieve arthritis pain so your body can stay in motion. because just one 200mg celebrex a day can provide 24 hour relief for many with arthritis pain and inflammation. plus, in clinical studies, celebrex is proven to improve daily physical function so moving is easier. celebrex can be taken with or without food. and it's not a narcotic. you and your doctor should balance the benefits with the risks. all prescription nsaids, like celebrex, ibuprofen, naproxen and meloxicam test. blood pressure or when nsaids are taken for long periods. nsaids, like celebrex, increase the chance of serious skin or allergic reactions, or stomach and intestine problems, such as bleeding and ulcers, which can occur without warning and may cause death. patients also taking aspirin and the elderly are at increased risk for stomach bleeding and ulcers. don't take celebrex if you have bleeding
1:39 pm
in the stomach or intestine, or had an asthma attack, hives, other allergies to aspirin, nsaids or sulfonamides. get help right away if you have swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing. tell your doctor your medical history. and find an arthritis treatment for you. visit celebrex.com and ask your doctor about celebrex. for a body in motion.
1:40 pm
have you heard about this? new report showing an alarming increase in the number of young people smoking hookah. that's a device that's used to smoke flavored toe baa co-through a water pipe. they said one of the biggest misconceptions out there is that it's a safe alternative to cigarettes. >> it's also perceived as not being as addicting or as harmful
1:41 pm
as smoking greacigarettes. they think it's filtering out the contaminates, but that's not the case. >> what did this come from? you see the hookah bars. >> this is obviously a new fashion here in u.s. if you really read the history of hookah, it comes from a place that i'm very familiar with. it's called per shah. there's -- don't try to pronounce it. very good. that's actually -- it's the same thing as hookah that you have. and marc is going to talk about the whole tobacco and tar and that it's not good for you. so you have this glass and there's a long history of this. goes back to centuries ago. where even i grew up as a kid going to some of these small caves. you would see three or four people sit around with the pipe and they have the vapor.
1:42 pm
it was a great place for old-timers to talk about politics and make all the decisions in the city. now centuries later, it went onto india, found its way to egypt, vesheventually came to europe. now we have it in new york city and of course the whole u.s. this is also becoming a misconception. there's a myth behind this. people think, smoking is not good for you and e-cigarettes is not good for you. so it's cool to hang out in these places. it is really preventing the toxins and the nicotines to get to you. marc is going to tell you what the answer is, which is obviously no. >> i love that you said e-cigarettes are not good either. so dr. siegel, hookah vapor nicotine-free, does the pipe filter out toxic components and also do the flavors make the hookah smoke less toxic.
1:43 pm
>> people believe that myth. they think the water is filtering out the tobacco, not at all. plus, there's charcoal, so that adds more carcinogens. the flavor, that draws more people to it. so it makes it more and more addictive. that is another problem with it. now, if you went occasionally to one of these places, fine. one session of an hour probably gives you somewhere about ten times as much as tobacco smoke. >> so you're saying they're worse. >> that sentence alone, that when you smoke one cigar or cigarette, it's a short period, you get the nicotine and then you're done. the average time that you spend behind hookah is about 40 minutes to 60 minutes. that's about 200 cigarettes in one session. plus the fact -- forget about
1:44 pm
the risk of copd, heart disease and lung cancer, also a lot of people share this. >> that would stop me right there. >> they gave me a mouthpiece when i was there, but they don't change them in between people. addition, there's a risk of oral cancer. we talk to actual users there. you're going to see how happy they are. >> i think it's somewhere to go when there's nowhere else to go. something different to do because a lot of people don't really do it. >> it's relaxing. you hang out and you smoke it and you just relax. you don't get high or anything. there's no narcotics in it. it's just a hang out thing. >> they were actually aware a number of these kids, these are 18-year-olds. they said, we do it anyway because it's pleasurable and it's sociable.
1:45 pm
>> i wonder whether he tried to smoke it while he was there or not. >> no comment. >> final message is basically don't do it. >> there's no regulation. just like e-cigarettes are not being regulated, these are not being regulated. it could be tricky and endangering these teenagers. you're getting more nicotine, which is addictive. while it's really cool, it's not good for you. we report, you decide. >> okay. you know it seems something that only affects teenagers, acne can be a real problem for many adults as woel. so why is it happening and what can you do if you have it. don't go anyway. "sunday housecall" continues. starts with back pain... ...and a choice. take 4 advil in a day which is 2 aleve...

>> now, should i worry? this is a weekly segment about everything that worries us. someone asks: i am 30 and i still have acne. should i worry? doctor, if you could break down what it is and why would a 30-year-old have it? >> acne is your skins, the pores are clogged with blackheads which are like dirt. they are filled with dirt. they get inflamed and you get people poles and whiteholds form so you get bacteria. it is a perfect storm: bacteria, dirt, puss forming and you get what is called acne. >> i just lost my appetite. what do you do? what do you do?
1:50 pm
>> try to get the skin more dry because the oil is clogging the pores. use antibiotic creams and lotion. you try to get the skin less oily. why would people have it as they get older? one out of five women have it into adulthood because of hormones. hormones and stress and changes of any kind when you have a change in estrogen or a change in your insulin, any changes make your skin more oily. that is the problem. a lot of people around that age start to get desperate and they take something called acutane and i warn people: that has to be prescribed by a serious dermatologist because it causes severe depression and causes cas with your liver. i want you to understand that after a while this is going to wear out.
1:51 pm
acne wears off but you can scar your skin. >> i know people who have taken it and their skin is gorgeous but what is the alternative to not getting it? >> if you have oily skin you need to wash at least twice a day and get rid of the oil because when the pores are clogged, suddenly everything is backed up and you start touching it and you get it inflicted and the cycle goes on. sometimes it could be genes and some family members go on and on, father, kids, there is nothing you can do but use some of the benzoih medication to clear it up. hormones have a lot to do with it. a lot less but in women when there are changes, you go on oral contraceptive pills that could be a reason or if you stop it. women on menopause go through the same thing. stress changes the androgen
1:52 pm
which it affects the gander and you produce more oil. >> look for the oil-free product and there are a list of them on my facebook and you will see a lot of great products. i started having problems since i came to fox news. >> it is the makeup. i am always rushing. you have to wash the makeup off. ought makeup. >> the makeup will do it. >> some makeups are less likely to cause the problem. also, stress. seriously, if i had to put my finger on one thing, the hormones you cannot do anything about. and birth control pills play a role and changes in hormones but you can do something about stress. also, not eating dairy is another thing. you can have dark chocolate but
1:53 pm
milk chocolate can cause acne. >> sometimes you need an actual washcloth. >> but do not spread too hard you can make it worse. >> hydration helps. >> when you older do not overdo the skin drying products like benzoid is more for the we 13-year-olds. okay...you are out of control today. if you have questions we will air your questions and answers and keep you all confidential. these guys are out of control. >> but next, it is summertime and doctors call it a silent epidemic, lyme disease. what happens if you get those little ticks, what do you do? how do you prevent yourself from
1:57 pm
>> back to sunday house school that starts out with symptoms that resemble the flu, lyme disease. per is here, you will want to know treating is a challenge. first of all, doctor, you do the full body check and you look for the ticks that spread lyme disease. >> use a tweeter and in a steady fashion, remove the tick. make sure that you wash it with iodine and with alcohol. make sure you check your doctor. what you look for, also, if you have a cash, it is called bull's eye rash looks like a bull's eye. you could have flu symptoms and you want to be treated for two or four weeks. the problem with lyme disease,
1:58 pm
there could be possibly 300,000 case as percent it is always underreported. there is also a chronic lyme disease which we may or may not have enough time to talk about, but you can be paralyzed or get meningitis from this. common symptoms such as gluten sensitivity, like lyme disease, there are a lot of common symptoms that doctors can miss. get a second opinion if it goes on for a while. it can be really hamful. >> oftentimes, people do not know they have lyme disease or see the politic we are talking about. why? how does it precipitate other ailments? can it be sexually transmittible? >> everyone heard the last question and i will answer that first. >> yes it can. everyone is finding that out now.
1:59 pm
recently, studies have shown it can be transmitted through sexual intercourse. david mentioned the blood test, he mentioned the rash. the rash is only present in 60 percent of the cases, a big red bull's eye. you don't have it you could still have lyme disease. i test everyone with a blood present but that also is only present 60 or 70 percent of the time. i look for fatigue. in certain areas like eastern long island or connecticut, the northeast, i always am criticized for saying this every state in the union can have lyme disease but it is most often the northeast and upper mid-west. if i see fatigue or the rash or joint ache i treat early. if i see a tick on there, i will treat with antibiotics early. >> have light colors, clothing, not dark. stay away from damp and wood areas.
2:00 pm
duck in your pants in your socks. it may not look good but it protects you. >> and deer fencing. >> thank you. >> on the buzz beater, president obama facing credited civil over the mushrooming crisis overrun by waves of immigrant children even on msnbc. >> the reality on the ground, the administration did not stay ahead of it. the reality is the white house has been slow to react. what took the press so long? why are liberal journalists turning on the president? >> sarah palin is pushing for obama's impeachment. >> a great awakeening is due in the country and this message will be sent he is not an imperial
