president. joining me with now is fox news analyst lieutenant colonel ralph peters we don't know where the president was the night americans died in benghazi. yesterday, 300 people killed, shot down by a surface to air missile, then, our closest ally begins a ground encouragement against hamas the president is in new york, fund raising. what is going on here? why isn't he in the situation room? >> sean, as you know, i share your anger. we ought to be feeling a great deal of sorrow because of the missed opportunity. one of the many tranl dis here is had our first mixed-race president been less arrogant, more capable, and an after rinl president, a taft or coolidge, would it have been great for the

country. he could have brought people together. instead we've got a man that lacks courage to make basic decisions and to lead. lacks courage to fulfill duties of the president. certainly lacks courage to stand up to someone like vladimir putin. you've hit something else. that is when you tie together the fact he just so he didn't react initially in this shoot down, and it doesn't connect with people. he doesn't care about clicking. he's the most self absorbed president we've ever had. that is saying something all presidents are to a degree but this man, sean, i don't think we could have elected a worse man in these times to be our president i can't say our leader but our president. >> i have to tell you listening to you i have great respect for

this a fox news alert, one day after 298 innocent civilians lost their lives after a surface-to-air missile shot a malaysian airlines plane out of the sky, there are still many

unanswered questions tonight. and fox ease own steve harrigan is in kiev in ukraine with the very latest on the investigation of flight 17. steve. >> reporter: sean, one of the real challenges in finding out exactly what happened from this site of the tragedy about 25 miles from the border with russia in eastern ukraine is it's still a hot war zone. there's still gunfire going off, the sound of russian-made grad missiles as well. this has gotten in the way of some european crash site experts from making their way to the scene. they're saying they're not being allowed to do their job to carry out an independent investigation because they're being hindered by the russian-backed rebel fighters. of course this investigation is what multiple world leaders are really calling for at this point. the problem is it's a war zone there. the real problem here too in the capital of ukraine is a white hot anger. and there's no doubt here as to where that anger is directed,

squarely at russia. you have ukrainian leadership pointing to russia saying this has been an act of terrorism by the russian government sponsoring these rebels. and among people on the street too you really get a sense of outrage, a push for their government to take action, to do something. one man told me, we have to shoot those russian bandits in our eastern part of our country. the real question is, will those tempers be able to cool what's next after this tragedy? you have president obama and president putin of russia both pushing for a cease-fire. but some of these pro-russian rebels in the east may not fall into line. there are different groups with their own ambitions. so simply turning off the faucet of violence may not be that easy. sean, back to you. >> all right, steve. thank you. joining us now with comments regarding who could have been responsible for shooting that airplane, fox's own jennifer griffin standing by tonight in washington with the very latest. jennifer, what's going on?

>> reporter: sean, we now know and it's confirmed there was only one american on board flight 17. it was a dual dutch u.s. citizen traveling on a dutch passport quinn lucas schansman. u.s. officials repeatedly hinted at russian involvement in the attack. the pentagon confirmed it was a russian-made sa-11 missile that brought down the malaysian flight fired from inside ukraine adding that separatists could not have done it by themselves. >> there's no hint that russian support for the separatists has ceased. in fact, we believe that russia continues to provide them with heavy weapons and other military equipment, financing as well. and they continue to allow these russian fighters to enter ukraine freely. >> this war can be ended. russia can end this war. russia must end this war. >> reporter: just 20 minutes after the plane went down this man, igor bezler, the self-proclaimed minister of

defense for the russian separatists, is heard talking to a russian military intelligence officer according to telephone intercepts released by the ukraine government. [ speaking in a foreign language ] >> reporter: ukrainian officials say this is the smoking gun. these telephone intercepts of the separatists reporting back ton intelligence, sean. >> all right. thank you, jennifer griffin, thanks so much. we're going to be following all the breaking news out of ukraine in this hour, but first we turn to the ongoing crisis in the middle east. israel ramped up its ground offensive. john huddy, the man who never sleeps, the man smack in the middle of the action in gaza city. watch this. >> reporter: okay.

[ bleep ] whoa! whoa! whoa! >> john huddy now joins us from gaza. john. >> reporter: yeah, well, sean, during the past 24 hours the fighting has really accelerated here in gaza. that's because as we know now israeli ground forces have crossed the border and they're pushing in deeper into gaza. so that -- what you saw at that air strike was one of probably about four or five of our count in this area. there was actually two behind us here targeting a location early. yeah, right, earlier. and then several others as well over the course of the last couple hours. along with that we've had artillery fire. we've had incoming artillery fire as well that was hitting a location from offshore naval vessel hitting just across the road here. so while we have seen action in this area before, sean, we haven't seen it with such frequency as we have tonight. and at this point more than 70,000 israeli troops are amassed along the border both to the north, to the east and now

to the south as this operation continues. we're in day 11 of operation protective edge, and the ground operations -- there was just a loud explosion in the background. bear with me. can't see it. ground operation could last anywhere from a week to two weeks or even longer. >> this has pretty much gone on 24/7. i know you haven't been sleeping a lot the last number of days. and it's very close to your location at times. how -- does it just not stop? i also heard hamas fired about a hundred rockets into israel today, is that right? >> reporter: yeah, that's correct. the rocket fire continues. it really -- it's -- really it increases when the sun goes down. that seems to be the pattern, sean. is at right after sunset that's when things really intensify. that's when the fighting accelerates. and so far it's been mostly to

the north. but then today throughout the course of the evening we've seen that fighting really comes much closer to our location here. but in terms of the air strike, that's a constant. some days it's every 20 minutes, other days it's every couple hours. but within the last 24 hours it has definitely increased and accelerated quite a bit, sean. >> as we can see the sun rising now in israel behind john. john, get some sleep. thanks for being with us. we appreciate you staying with us tonight. we're going to turn our attention back to washington for details. how is the administration, if they are, going to respond to these international crises? fox's own ed henry standing by tonight at the white house. ed has the very latest. ed. >> reporter: shawn, good to see you. what the president is doing tonight is working the phones calling leaders in uk, germany, australia, all with a coherent message to try and convince them to stand with the u.s. and

demanding that international investigators get inside ukraine. you heard steve harrigan reporting there that these pro-russian separatists are still armed and are blocking international investigators from getting in there and getting the evidence. the fear tonight at the white house is that the russian president vladimir putin is going to lead a cover-up and that the evidence is disappearing from the ukrainian side of the border. and there was an interesting difference in tone today in terms of standing up to putin. president obama seemed to strike a very cautious tone here at the white house news conference while his ambassador to the united nations samantha power was much more aggressive in pointing the finger directly at putin. interesting because republicans on capitol hill are suggesting that the president has not been showing enough leadership. listen. >> if mr. putin makes a decision that we are not going to allow heavy armaments and the flow of fighters into ukraine across the ukrainian/russian border, then

it will stop. >> far more important than what he says is actually what he does. and there is no substitute for a strong united states military and intelligence presence around the world. people see us receding around the world while the crisis just gets inflamed. >> reporter: now, at this news conference today the president basically took the u.s. military option, any option to deal with the crisis in ukraine off the table saying he would only work with nato allies in case one of them was struck. and according to nato charter, defend them. but no offensive military action. talked about getting european allies to go along with sanctions. so far the europeans won't do that. they're worried about their own economies being hurt if they go after the russian economy. and as we've seen, u.s. sanctions have hit the russian economy. there's been some positive impact there, but overall it hasn't changed putin's behavior. >> ed, one follow-up on that. jennifer griffin played that phone call, that phone

intercept, which i think issin controvertible evidence of who's responsible for taking out the commercial airliner, isn't western europe in a horrible position here? their hands are tied because of the dependence on energy coming out of the ukraine? >> reporter: sure. that's why the president when i was with him in europe a couple recent trips was urging angela merkel in germany and other european allies diversify your economies because you can't be so dependent upon russia. that's a long-term issue. in the short-term that's why the europeans are pressing americans for more leadership. what we've heard from the president is, look, the europeans have to stand up and show more leadership and sanction russia. but as you suggest because of those energy concerns, other concerns, the europeans haven't gone along. and that's why putin has been able to get away with this. >> be nice if the president thought we were an exceptional nation. but that's a commentary i will have later in the program. ed henry at the white house tonight. thank you, sir. more on the breaking developments out of ukraine and israel as we get them here at the fox news channel.

it. it seemed like it wasn't kind of a definite thing when i had first found out yesterday afternoon. and kind of i stayed up late last night and kind of early this morning. it just, you know, didn't seem real. >> and how long were you friends for? >> we had met during my junior year at indiana university, so that was maybe three or four years ago now. >> right. and she was, what, 25 years old? >> yep, uh-huh. >> and she had a boyfriend and she was studying, i understand, some medicine issues or medical-related issues? >> yeah. she was very passionate about chemistry and very, very bright. and it was something that she always expressed she loved doing. even though i know it kept her busy, but she always spoke very highly of it. >> yeah. you're in our thoughts and prayers tonight. we apologize for your loss.

this is a fox news alert. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is warning of an expanded ground assault in gaza. joining me now with reaction, former u.s. ambassador to the u.n. bolton. good to see you. they can't say it, but this is the least supportive president of israel in our lifetime, am i right? >> absolutely. i think president obama is really almost hostile to the interests of israel. and i think it's being demonstrated now by the way he's treating israel's exercise of its legitimate right of self-defense to go after hamas for its terrorist activities against israel. and i think ultimately more importantly strategically going after the missile capabilities that iran has supplied hamas in order to protect its own nuclear weapons program. >> what is he expecting to do with 1600 rockets fired into their cities? what does he expect them to do?

why are we standing side by side with them? i don't understand it. >> well, i think it follows a pattern of the obama presidency rhetorically you know he's right there with israel, i've got israel's back, unbreakable bond between the united states and israel all designed for domestic u.s. political consumption. but behind the scenes he's putting enormous pressure on israel to cut back this particular offensive and to try and get a cease-fire in place. john kerry's not even being subtle about it. so the israelis faced with a threat of annihilation from an iran when it gets nuclear weapons trying to deal with the lesser threat of hamas getting no help from the united states politically or otherwise. >> you know, he sends kerry out there every day to show restraint, show restraint in the pressure behind the scenes according to my sources in israel is fierce from the competition. what do you make of what is now

incontrovertible evidence of this shooting down of malaysian flight 17. seems like the president is going to stretch this out, putin will deny and seems to me he's going to end up getting away wit. i hope i'm wrong. >> i'm afraid that's the best prediction i would make as well is that putin has gauged this president to be weak and inattentive. let's face it, the shooting down of this malaysian airliner tragedy for the people involved obviously but a catastrophic mistake from putin's point of view. and yet every hour that goes by you're seeing obama fritter away the possibility of taking strong measures, not just in defense of ukraine but against the whole thrust of putin's foreign policy. counting on the europeans n not to be able to take the lead themselves. and he's counting on obama to turn away from the issue. >> ambassador bolton, thank you. >> thank you. and joining me now with more reaction to israel's ongoing

ground offensive in gaza is israel's ambassador to the united states ron durmer with us. ambassador, thank you for being with us. >> thank you for having me, sean. >> as this is happening i'm a little shocked at secretary of state kerry's admonition for israel to constantly show restraint. what is your reaction to that considering what now 1600 rockets have been fired into israel? >> i think the secretary supports israel's right to defend itself. i know the president does as well. i personally spoke to the secretary. and i know he supports israel's right to defend itself. i think the facts are, sean, is that israel has exercised an enormous amount of restraint. just imagine what the situation would be if you had over 200 million americans in bomb shelters as a thousand rockets were being fired at you from contiguous territory from a terror organization. does anyone seriously believe that america would use less force than israel is using now to protect its population? we are acting in a very surgical way to strike at the missile

batteries that hamas has placed in civilian centers next to schools, next to mosques, next to hospitals. they are not only targeting our civilians but using their civilians as human shields. but we're acting with enormous restraint considering our people are under constant rocket attack. >> ambassador, i would suggest to you that just one rocket in any american city would result in massive overwhelming use of force. 1600 and on average thousands a year is the situation that your fellow country men have been living under now for a long time. is it true -- and i think this is important to put context and texture to what's going on in gaza, is it true that when you would discover a home or a central location where hamas is hiding their rockets that you would give them eight minutes notice before you bomb that home that they could leave it? and is it also true that you gave a week's notice by dropping leaflets in the areas where people should leave and where

they should go in the lead-up to this? yeah. >> well, what we do is we drop fliers and we make phone calls and we send text messages and sometimes even when we're bombing a specific target we will use a dummy bomb to try to get civilians out of harm's way. we take such great care to get civilians out of harm's way. it doesn't mean that we're perfect. there's been over 2,000 targeted operations in gaza. it's a really big built up area because there are so many missile batteries spread, as i said civilians homes, mosques, schools, hospitals. we just had a school yesterday a u.n. organization that's supposed to help palestinian refugees, one of their schools had 20 rockets in it. you know what they did with those rockets? they apparently contacted the authorities to pick them up. you know who the authorities are in gaza? hamas. so that's what israel's dealing with. and we do everything to keep their civilians out of harm's way. but even if we get it right 99%

of the time, if 1% of those 2,000 targets are off and 20 missiles go in the wrong place, that's when you have civilian casualties. we regret loss of every civilian life, but the ones who should be responsible for this are hamas for putting their civilians in the way. even egypt blamed hamas for israel having to defend themselves here. look, i understand the mission here is to break up hamas' infrastructure and break up their tunnel system that they have where they're hiding these rockets, et cetera. but for the iron dome, all of those 1600 rockets would have landed in civilian areas within israel. where's the source of this weaponry? is it syria? is it iran? and what do you do about the ultimate source here? do you not have to go to the source to prevent this from happening in the future? >> well, you raise a very good point. the source of a lot of those rockets that have been smuggled into gaza do come from syria and iran. iran, you may remember, a few months ago tried to smuggle
