4:15 pm
>> reporter: good morning, jouleiet we are hearing more action to the north. we saw flares coming down and that indicates a battle that is starting to happen or an opening salvo. i will keep my eyes out and eyes and ears open. we'll talk about what happened overnight and this morning so far. the main accountive is rooting out hamas' network of tunnels and that was the primary goal last night as the ground offensive continued. we are in day three and israel soldiers dug in the tunnels with the d9 bulldozer ands moving it over the israeli and gaza border. three militants were killed and
4:16 pm
two israelis were killed and two were dressed as you mentioned in israeli soldier uniform to infilt rate and a thifrd one had hand cuff ands tranquilizers obviously as an attempt to abduct israelis. and this is a concern. these tunnels stretch in israel and 13 tunnels have been destroyed. but the israeli military expect there are many, many more. and this also as the air strikes continue. there are numerous air strikes over the course of last 13 days. 150 targets were hit including several in our location. we saw a wall that was blown out and perhaps it was targeted for a tunnel and it is why it was struck and property in and around us that was hit while we have been here.
4:17 pm
and death toll as you mentioned. two israeli soldiers were killed last night. and i am hearing gun four in the distance. and more than 350 palestinians have been killed and 1600 injured. and the fifth of the death toll are children. and coming back to us. there is a flare to the north artillery fire and seeing the explosions. that is several miles north. we have so tremendous amount of fighting in the last three days offensive and artillery fire and air strikes in and around our location. and i will listen for one second. it sounds like helicopters in the area andev now and again we hear a jet as well.
4:18 pm
and we'll keep an eye on this, as i said around now things start to hot up and that's what we are starting to see. it was quiet because hundred tons of medical supplies were brought across the border for gaza hospitals including the hospital in gaza city. doctors are over womened because they are running out of medical splois and hopefully that is changing. and you can hear the explosion and the war and battle on the ground with the ground offensive >> jowly. >> it just doesn't slow down. and excellent reporting as always. >> and new hope and time in curving a nuclear program. deadline for negotiations was to have expired tomorrow. teheran agreed it remain in the

4:35 pm
back to you. >> and so every since we learned about flight 17 going down, so many people were surprised to learn that commercial airlines were flying over a volatile region of the world. and it happens more often than you might think and it happens in iraq every day. will this tragedy change the way the world flies? kim kirstenson and aviation analyst joins me now. it is it a fact that iraq in a war- torn country commercial airlines are flying in the air space, right? >> yes, and many regions even in africa. and some regions have more robust systems to it shoot down airlines that are flying over their regions and that was the case two days ago. >> flight 17 was flying a air traffic routing that is issued by dozens of jets a day in of ae by federal aviation authorities.
4:36 pm
and this raises a lot of questions whether the plane is flying over war- torn eastern ukraine and if policies need to change and if commercial airlines carrying innocent civilians should enter the territories. >> that's correct, julie. and the euro control who is responsible for filing a flight plane of the malaysian jet flying over the remmingion and the reason they were avoiding, and when they got shot down, they were outside of that region. and that is caught up in the web. and that is surface to air missiles and what dot airlines need to do. and should they be to avoid troubled spots. and it is safe as it was.
4:37 pm
and that is the aviation authority look bo the enteleigence on daily briefs. and avoid that area altogether. >> and clearly those who shot it down didn't think a commercial airline should be flying through the region can when they assumed caring civilians. could this has consequences for air travel do you believe? >> i think it is an innocent where policy will be changed. israel deals on it on a daily basis. they have to fly over regions that are not friendly to them. but it was a rather large airliner and the only bigger is 747 and 380. they have to look at the regions. and clearly people on the ground semitrained and not fully
4:38 pm
trained because they did not identify the aircraft as friend or foe with the iff- system and shot down a airliner. >> i want to explain to the viewers why is a plane near a war- torn country like iraq and ucan't. a lot of it is economic. flight times are extended and that is more fuel and pilots et cetera. and what is the alternative and if you can't cancel flights all over the world and that would drive the airline industries in to bankruptcy essentially with the amount of money it costs and what do you do? do you fit airliners with missile defense technology and that is something that hasn't been done? >> some business jets that fly in high threat regions do that. but the pilots go through
4:39 pm
training. >> but the commercial airliners don't have that. but we should have that in war torn regions. you have to pay the price somewhere instead of lives. >> that's correct, julie. but counter measures with a large aircraft. it can't manoufer very fast and sometimes you have to have counsellor movers and they are not trained for that. and you have to have military pilots train for. that >> absolutely. when they take out of iraq they do cork screw techniques. you will not so a commercial cork screws through ukraine. thank you for talking to us. >> my pleasure. >> earlier we asked if there is a fair investigation in the downed malaysian airliner. >> and jrv, too late for a fair
