joining us is professor of your -- >> unlocking the code of sickness and health. we start today with a new health alert about some of those breakfast cereals that your kids enjoy in the morning. research now suggesting that they may be getting more than
9:31 am
the recommend amount of vitamins that they need. how is this even possible and is there a particular type of serial that we're talking about? >> these are major cereals that are out there. so 45 foods has actually helped us tremendously. as kids we were not getting all the nutritions, we were not getting our vitamin ds and calcium, so these bone abnormalities are big-time, and you don't see them anymore because our food, we're adding o all the nutrients and vitamins and minerals. the labels on these cereals may not be correct. that we're getting actually too much of these vitamins, we're finding there's more violent minute, a, zinc and niacin. what does that mean? about 10 million children out there are getting too much vitamin a, and you can get liver
9:32 am
damage and toxicity and liver damage. we're getti ting too much zinc. same thing with niacin, that's why kids have rash, nausea and vomiting. now the cdc is looking into the labels because a lot of these labels haven't changed since is the 68 and we're looking into to see if this information is accurate. to parents out there, watch the amount of these cereals, these are kellogg's, raisin brand and others, unfortunately they haven't kept up with these labels. >> how do you know your kids aren't getting too much? they're getting vitamins in the cereals too. >> first problem is the boxes aren't labeled for kids. they'll say adult daily requirements are. they'll say this is fulfilling a
9:33 am
lot of it. you're also getting supplements in a lot of the foods that kids eat and they may get it in their regular diet. so vitamin a is a fat soluble vitamin, if you overdose on vitamin a, it's bad for your fingernails. the environmental working group that started this study says that 10 million americans have too much vitamin a. >> can you get that just by eating cereal? >> do you have a couple of times a day cereal, it may be all your kid is eating, are they taking flintstone vitamins? what are they doing? we really got to start watching this and relabel food. >> it's the added amount of vitamin d, so you're getting a lot of it from food, you're getting it from snack bars and
9:34 am
now you're adding vitamins. 13 million of our children are getting too much zinc and that can affect the red blood cells and white blood cells. what would i tell my kids? cut down on the amounts of these cereals or if you take those, don't overdo it on the vitamins. >> kids love cereal, so should you have cereal as a kid, every day for breakfast five times a week? >> it's okay to have it every day, but just a portion in the amount we're giving, based on the labels of these cereals are mostly for adults not for kids. so we're just giving too much of them to our kids. >> show me the size bowl. >> we think of zinc as a good thing, it fights the cold, get zinc, but too much zinc can give you a problem with your immune system, the last thing you need if you're a kid. hey, fortified is good, too
9:35 am
fortified in no good. if you have fruit and vegetables, not all kids will eat that unfortunately. but if you eat fruits and vegetables, u you get all the vitamins that you need. >> taets si the kid had some unknown rash out of the blue, or they have nausea or vomiting, we just want people to know that it's too much vitamins that they're getting. >> one-third of all kids also take dietary supplement, you don't need a dietary supplement if you're eating cereal every day. >> lucky charms taste great, but i don't need them.
9:36 am
>> all right. they say something kills more people than drugs combined. that's alcohol abuse. the doctors will talk about that and how we all can control the amount that we drink. best morning ever! [ hans ] warm, flaky, gooey. toaster strudel!

9:39 am
back now with sunday house call with ways that you can be healthier. there's news that shows just how deadly excessive drinking can be according to a new study. alcoholism remains the leading cause of premature death in our country, responsible for the death of one in ten adults. so if you enjoy beer or whine, how much is too much? >> a few weeks ago we talked about smoking, now we want to talk about alcohol. tell me the truth, how many drinks per week, how many drinks her day. it's problematic, 30,000 fatal car accidents from alcohol. over 25,000 deaths due to liver disease, that's not the mention the risk from cancer, increased risk from breast cancer, increased risk of colon cancer.
9:40 am
plus it combines with all the other big killers, problems with lifestyle, problems with smoking, problems with eating, people that drink don't tend to take care of themselves. be honest with your physician. >> so the binge drinking is what we're talking about, if you're having five hard liquor, five serious drinks in a short period of time that's too much and that's dangerous. premature death as a result of alcohol kills about 88,000 people, mostly men, 70% men, 30% women out there, it's a serious problem. $230 billion goes into this kind of thing. and yes, it's in all of our electronic records, but personally, a lot of doctors out there aren't paying attention. we ask the question, do you drink alcohol, and then we go on to the next one. as the doctor, you always double
9:41 am
the amount that the patient will tell you, that's the rule number one that we learned in medical school. but when it comes to smokings, we want to really make sure that they quit, but with alcohol, we haven't been effective. people are getting liver cirrhosis, and accidents. what the cdc found, was they used the questionnaires to look at age between 20 and 64, they found we're losing about 2.5 million great life years as a result of alcohol. >> the centers for disease control reports here, it's up 12,000 a year, patients that drink lie about it. they will not tell us the truth. hey, listen, i'm not criticizing you for that, but if you tell me how much you drink, i can help you. >> how do you know if you drink too much? >> also kind of on that same
9:42 am
note, eric, you said, doctor, how much is too much? and what is okay? >> that's changing. you know, we have study after study on this, everyone says, oh, a glass of wine a night may be good for your circulation. here's what i say about that today. i would say no drinking is good. i would say -- doctors do not advertise it's okay, it's okay. if someone has a drink before bed, it relaxes them, but maybe they're more likely to wake up in the middle of the night. >> first of all, every friday night, he has at least two glasses of red wine. >> i'm not a good example. >> on sunday after church, you're going to have some wine. social drinking, i think it's perfectly fine. we have spoken about red wine, i enjoy a great glass of red wine, if you're out there and you're drinking two glasses in an entire week, then it's okay. but two or three a day, it's a
9:43 am
liver problem, it's a behavioral problem. if you're having half a bottle of wine every day, eric, and i hope you're not doing that, then we're in trouble. >> two glasses is a half a bottle of wine. >> i want to say one final point, i agree with david that one or two glasses is fine a day. but i don't want any nondrinkers out there to have a glass of wine, i haven't been doing it. >> i'm a little confused because i'm not sure who said what, so are you saying two glasses a day is too much? or it's okay. >> i said two to three glasses of red wine a week is reasonable. by if you're doing it over and over again, i may go out one week and drink three glasses and go for another week and not do it. if there's an event, of course you do it. that's social drinking, but if you're having hard liquor, four or fife glasses of whisky, et cetera. >> women tolerate it less than
9:44 am
men. >> how about light beer, does that make a difference? >> the alcohol amount is still there. again, it's the number and the duration and the amount you put in during the period, if you put in a lot of alcohol in a short period, your liver has to wor r harder and over time, it will affect you. >> we only drink wine thursday, friday, saturday, just kind of do it in moderation. >> i know someone who doesn't do spirits, they'll stick with just wine. >> and don't mix your alcohol, that's another thing. >> watch the sugar, also. >> okay, well, some of you are writing us saying that you're feeling more winded than usual, do you just need to start hitting the gym more or is it a sign of a more serious issue. doctors weigh in on that next in should i worry? abfest at red lobster!

9:46 am
9:47 am
9:48 am
now for should i worry? it's our weekly session about everything that worries us. my chest feels really heavy and i have a hard time breathing, should i worry? i know you would have to get more information about this patient. not sure if it's a man or a woman, but just off the cuff, what does this say? >> this person sends this e-mail to us. i had a person that i operated on, comes in for a check up, as he walks in, he sits in the office, i see he's not acting like himself, he's having a little bit of problem breathing,
9:49 am
i asked him if he's having chest pain, at first he denied it. he was having a real heart attack right in front of my face and i called his daughter and said we're going to take him to the emergency room. guess what? he was having a heart attack and we were able to save him. the first thing that comes to mind, chest pain and -- we want to rule out pulmonary embolism, whether it's pneumonia, bronchitis, ulcer, es soft -- i think chest pain should be taken very seriously. time is off of the essence, as soon aser we get to the doctor, could be just pain, but before it becomes a real infarct, we
9:50 am
can -- >> someone says it feels like a truck on your chest, others say it's not that much. but you've got that radiated pain down the arm. you always wonder, gee, i don't know. >> how do you know if they you're having a heart attack? >> they think i have gas. >> chest pain, shortness of breath and fatigue are the three cardinal symptoms of a cardinal of an acute heart attack coming on, according to the american heart association. if you have any chest symptoms, and you made a great point there, eric, is it sharp, is it dull? you get on the phone right away with your doctor. he may have an answering machine that says call 911, which is of no use, but if you have chest pain, the sooner you get to the hospital, the better. we want to get a catheter in there and open up the blockage right away. that's what you want to make sure of, that it's not an acute
9:51 am
heart attack. if you have chest pain and shortness of breath, you get to the hospital. if it n if it's not your heart, it could also be your lungs. it could be fluid on your heart. you don't want to make that diagnosis at home, you want the emergency room to make that diagnosis. if it's shortness of breath, it could be bronchitis. don't look it up on the internet, get to the hospital. >> you feel silly, though. if your breathing is not the same, it's just a little heavier, you feel silly. >> it could be a panic attack, it could be anxiety. >> that's a good point. i'm glad you brought it up. >> it could be anxiety, it could be a panic attack, it could be fatigue from something totally unrelated. i don't want people to make that decision themselves. >> a lot of times, eric, this is probably nothing, but we don't want people to ignore it. yes, it could be pericarditis,
9:52 am
it could be in flams of the lini -- inflammation of the lining around the heart. or in older men and women it could be congestive heart failure meaning the heart it failing. the list of things that can affect you, chest pain, shortness of breath, it's bad news until proven otherwise. people may have hiatal hernias. get to the doctor, call 911, and the sooner you get -- >> can you walk into one of those emergency care clinics? >> the problem is we don't have the right cardiac care there. doctors say, what's the most likely thing and what's the worst thing we don't want to miss? that's why we put the heart at the top of the list, because even if chances are small, don't want to put the heart attack in action. >> what marc is saying, if guyo
9:53 am
go to one of those places and they diagnose you, they can't do much, where at the emergency room, they can wheel you right to an x-ray to see if they need to unblock an obstruction. >> names and addresses will be kept completely confidential and they still won't send you a bill. from a sip of afternoon tea to spending time with the family, we're breaking down the secrets and health benefits of living like a royal.

9:56 am
we're back now with "sunday housecall." queen elizabeth is celebrating her 88th birthday this year. her husband, for instance phillip, is 93 years old and the queen mother lived to be 101. what is their secret and what can we learn about the royals so we can live a longer, healthier life? dr. siegel, please don't tell me i need a castle and a horseman and lots of rooms and people to serve me. >> we need a vacation. we also need dogs, apparently, because those cute little dogs,
9:57 am
you pet them, they kiss you. >> they lower your blood pressure. >> sure, they lower your blood pressure. and eating a balanced diet here that we always talk about on the show, the mediterranean diet. tea also, it's very, very good for you. anti-cancer compounds. tea is very good for your heart as well. >> any kind of tea or green tea? >> any kind of tea, but green tea is good, too. >> so a spot of tea at 4:00 or any time is good for you. >> it's very interesting because they said they lived in london for about three years. you don't get hungry there. one thing she does all day long, small portions. she eats about four different kinds of meals so her sugar level is always constant as opposed to the american diet where we get a big portion of food, your sugar spikes and then drops suddenly and you're always starving and you have the crave.
9:58 am
tea is obviously a big part of the british culture and all the anti-oxidants can free the radicals and she does well. i like the fact she has a pet, because studies show dog owners have lower blood pressure, and she has a lot of dogs in the chateau. but you know what the secret to her is? she always laughs a lot. every picture you see on tv, she's very happy, she's smiling, i'm sure she gets enough sleep. all the things we talk about, not smoking, not drinking, and her diet is amazing. she sticks to great fruits and vegetables. one thing she should be doing which she's not, she should follow what president bush did. she needs to fall from some plane to be complete. >> we have the exercise role model and i don't get what queen elizabeth does for exercise, but i'm a big fan of morning exercise every day.
9:59 am
even if you can only walk. i love ethei elliptical. >> hiking and -- >> spending time with your family as well. >> i'm not going to be a horseman. >> many studies show skipping your vacation can lead to signs of heart disease and heart attack. so she takes a regular vacation, which is something all of us do. we work 52 weeks a year, so that's important. >> even a staycation? is that okay? >> what's that? >> you stay home. >> sure, if you have a house on the water. >> you just stay home. >> i think seeing her jumping out of a plane like george w. bush adds two more years to make it 90. there is a prince waiting in the wings there, but we want her to stay in great health as long as
10:00 am
possible. >> i like laughing. sounds good to me. that's going to do it for us. i'm marcel neville. >> thanks for watching fox newschannel. have a good day. the deadliest day yet in israel's ground offensive. israel's military pounds a neighborhood in the gauze a strip saying it's straking ham as where it hurts. st spokesman for israel's prime minister joins us live from tel aviv. three days after the crash of malaysia airlines mh 17, most painful for the families, where are the bodies being taken? the blacks boxes have been found, but where are they now? we'll have a live report from thera
