9:00 am
jon: patty ann and i will see you in one hour with our updated edition of "happening now." "outnumbered" starts right now. >> this is "outnumbered." today's hashtag one lucky guy, he did come back. geraldo rivera. he's officially outnumbered. >> i love being outnumbered. >> yes. another monday with you is a joy. >> andrea, i really mean that this is the most pleasure as a news man sitting on this chair. >> how sweet is that? >> it's delightful. >> flattery will get you everywhere on this show. >> all of this love. i feel like i'm still on vacation. >> you're glowing from vacation. >> you are. >> i the makeup. >> you look like you had a great time. >> i did. very blessed. >> very well rested. so glad to have you back.
9:01 am
well, it may be a case of bad timing. right now the white house welcoming a group of nearly african-american leaders for a summit in washington but the headline here is ebola as fears are growing that the deadly virus will soon spread beyond west africa where it's claimed more than 800 lives. president obama himself saying some african guests will undergo additional screenings to ensure safety. all of this as the second of two known american missionaries with ebola is sent to be flown back to the u.s. tomorrow. and that second american with the deadly virus will receive treatment at the same atlanta hospital where an american doctor arrived on friday. in the meantime, c.d.c. chief doctor saying the deadly virus can be contained and has this to say when asked whether the african summit should have been cancelled. >> absolutely not. we're dependent and part of the world. there are 50 million travellers from around the world that come to the u.s. each year. they're essential to our economy, to our families, to our
9:02 am
communities. we're not going to seal this country. what we can do is put in place sensible screening procedures but the single most important thing we can do to protect americans is to stop spread of disease around the world. >> okay. a lot of fears spreading in the united states. if you talk to people, i know we get here at the fox news channel busy covering international affairs, ebola but you talk about people and they're legitimately scared. are their fears unfounded that this could be spreading in the united states? >> did you ever see the news show "the last ship?" >> oh, yeah. >> and then the walking dead? we've been raised on this story of virus, outbreaking, claiming 85% of the world's population. it is bad backdrop. it's the absolute fear you have and now this awful timing. president obama can't buy a break. here he wanted to cement his legacy, first african-american
9:03 am
president bringing 50 african leaders here. anyone -- all anyone is talking about is that we brought two people infected back to the united states. there's never been an ebola virus in the united states, in the whole person hemisphere and now we brought one back, one in route. it's a tough situation now but fear now is outpacing reality. but the fear is so extreme. >> i would agree with that. >> it is more difficult than the common cold to spread. it has to spread through bodily fluids but in the "wall street journal" today there was an editorial that talked about the danger of travel and how, you know, millions of people are coming to j.f.k. every year. what if someone does get on a plane? >> that's true. >> and vomits on the plane and then it spreads or they spread it to the family and all of a sudden, you have a case that spreads and it could be a possible problem? so are their fears -- >> it's really.
9:04 am
>> i have some fear. is containment even realistic? when you loyou look at modern d travel, they say the symptoms have to be severe. you can't be a carrier in another sense. but these things mutate. like you said, we do have all of these films to sort of think of so at times are we living in reality or an alternate universe but i think it's scary when people are hopping on trains and planes. >> but there's nothing new about people travelling and i do respect the medical professionals that have been on a cross box, fox news basis and we hear from them that we should not be concerned and this can be contained. my problem is the casual reaction that we've had to it. the situation in liberia, particularly, is dire. they're limiting the amount of people they can put in taxi cabs. they're selling out of buckets because people are filling them with chlorine to clean their hands. there's bodies in the street there.
9:05 am
people are contaminating this by the dead bodies at funerals and now mandating that the bodies get cremated. it's reached a serious tipping point. the united states just needs to be a little bit more, i think, reacting a little bit more seriously here than we are. the screening they're providing at the white house, not everybody is going to get that kind of screening before these people enter the united states. >> there are a couple of things z. liberia is not even at this summit. it's one of the country suffering from ebola. they have not been invited today to the white house. couldn't they at least skype with them and have a discussion? ebola is not even on the agenda. >> i don't know that i want to cast dispersions on that part of it yet because i don't know yet what they're dealing with there. having been there, i can tell you that this is not the first outbreak of ebola these countries have dealt with. nigeria is really the country to watch right now. they have just come on the map in the last two hours now and
9:06 am
that's serious because the second person who has it has connections to minnesota. now we have a person in tennessee after a canadian doctor had put himself in self quarantine. now we have a person in tennessee whose daughter picked him up at the airport last week who is self quarantined and watching for the symptoms the symptoms don't have to be dire to spread this. they just have to be present. so there are some common ways where people can protect themselves and travelling is the issue. the airlines already know now. you have to do chlorine. you heard. this is tougher than hand sanitizer. >> which people won't do. >> so two things to know. the airlines know now that they have to look out for this so the airlines are already the flight attendants, everybody at these airlines that are flying back and forth now -- >> give a cloor even bath? >> we're seeing the c.d.c. issue the highest travel warning ever, level three. that means that the people who
9:07 am
come in contact with those who would come into our country have to be ready for this. they're the first line of defense and as long as they're doing their jobs, we have a fighting chance. now, this guy in tennessee presents a different question and problem. are there others who have come from that part of the world who have self watching right now? and we have to wait for them to become symptomatic to know about them. >> we also have a porous border and a lot of other issues to deal with. >> don't get me going about illegals bringing in diseases. >> if america can do anything, we can -- >> come on. it hasn't happened. it's a good way to gen up hysteria. >> probably the story for tomorrow's show. we'll continue this conversation. it is a developing story. it's a serious one at that. we wanted to give it proper attention. now move to this. new developments in the conflict between israel and hamas. the fighting is slowing in gaza after an israeli declared cease fire and troop withdrawals.
9:08 am
israeli official also telling fox israel is considering pulling out of gaza without a cease fire agreement. the temporary calm making it possible for trucks carrying supplies to cross the border. most of them bringing food for the palestinians. all this just a day after the united states criticized israel for a deadly air strike just outside of a u.n. school and shelter in gaza. the state department calling it disgracef disgraceful. the strongest language to date. there are reports that john kerry's calls during peace talks last year, is the u.s. backing away from israel? >> i think israel has only itself to blame. i think the force used has been so grossly disproportionate, they have inflicted civilian casualties in a way that the united states and the u.n. secretary general are correct to call a po pauling. i've covered war for over 40
9:09 am
years. if you want to use a hell fire missile directed by a drone, put it in the window of a building you want to. when you're using a tank shell in this case, the firing that they were receiving was 200 yards, two football fields away from where the tank shells landed. taking these 10 lives, this is a travesty. it is hurting israel on the world stage and it's undermining support of the jewish state. >> hold on a second, though. they've obeyed humanitarian windows, warned civilians. they've done a lot to make sure that civilians in gaza have been protected. if you have fire incoming from a school or from a location and israel fires back on the people who are firing them, are we really holding israel accountable for that or are we saying this is your fault? you can't defend yourself? >> do you remember when bloomberg said the airport is safe, open it up. we have these missiles, you know, we've got them wiped out with the iron dome and so fort? three israeli civilians have
9:10 am
been killed in the current round. one was an arab farmer by rand am and the other two were somehow engaged with the military. 60 soldiers, over 1,800 palestinians, most of them women and children, come on. it is -- >> where are they firing rockets them if they're not fighting into israel? >> what has changed? it used to be that israel could fire and in three to six days, because it's called the three-day war or six-day war, they could do things but there's asymmetrical warfare now. now it becomes a month long conflict. now it's an unending conflict and you are going to -- you are going to have to hit certain targets that you pray you don't have to. >> can i get in here? what are kids doing in schools in the first place in a war? what are they doing in schools? >> these are safe houses. >> let me finish, please. geraldo, let me please speak.
9:11 am
they put these kids in a school, put weapons deliberately in a school, then israel strikes and people like you get up and call the organization. >> what is a person like me? you should be ashamed of yourself for saying that to me of all people. jewish star tattooed on my hand. i would die for israel. >> when they were 1,800 dead civilians and women and children are bleeding on camera and you're not moved by that? >> whose fault is that? they warned them to move the kids. >> these palestinian missiles are absolutely laughable in their military effect. they -- israel now is about to declare a unilateral cease fire. >> it's unbelievable to defend hamas. >> israel is alone in the world. and attitudes like yours will make it isolated more and more. >> what about the arab nations who sit around? what about saudi arabia? what abo these other
9:12 am
arab nations? orred an, that could stand up and get involved in this? they're being silent. they may know hamas is in the wrong in this but we're not hearing from them. why not? >> i don't speak for the so-called moderate arab states. i think that their moderation is opportunistic. i'm concerned about israel. there is only one solution to this mess. there has to be a two state solution as every united states president, including george w. bush and president obama, the two state solution, these two people living side by side with walls separating them with american gi's -- >> he's hard hl a similar position than george w. bush. >> what happens? >> i say we get out of the way and let them defend themselves without making excuses for hamas. >> and the palestinians continue for another century? 1,800 deaths become 18,000?
9:13 am
>> we do not allow them to defend themselves. >> i'm going to turn the wheel a little bit here. obviously this is a heated debate, heated conversation. i want to keep this going. the conversation is not just here at fox news. it's across the country. even hollywood has been getting involved and john voigt is the latest attack liberals for coming out and speaking about israel. you've been able to become famous and have your monetary gains because you're in a democratic country, america. do you think you would have been able to accomplish this in iran, syria, lebanon? sits? you had a great opportunity to use your celebrity for good and instead you degamed the only democratic country of good will in the middle east, israel. you should hang your heads in shame. we got this in because everyone is opinion ated on the subject. hollywood has been speaking out against it. penelope cruz was one of those.
9:14 am
>> good for john voigt. it's a free country. he's become more conservative as he's gotten older. all of us have. that's a natural reaction. i think that i've heard people say his chances for the emmy are undermined by this stance in favor of israel. i think that if you are up for the golden globe and there was world voting, he would be -- his chances of winning the golden gleb would be hurt. i don't think anyone -- i don't think it takes any political courage in this country to be for israel. >> i think it takes huge political courage in hollywood. we just saw a punch of celebrities, penelope cruz signing a letter. >> as far as i know, they're residents -- >> what does that have to do with it? >> they're world actors who
9:15 am
signed a letter. i don't sign letters. i'm talking from geraldo rivera's point of view, israel must stop this disproportionate war that it is waging. israel is undermining its credibility. >> but israel wants peace. so if you want the fighting to stop, you have to talk to the terrorist organization. >> you're going to solve the problem, you have to settle this. we have to end the occupation. >> if hamas was not firing -- >> maybe you need more occupation. maybe what you're calling for is what is not needed. maybe we need a situation where there's a demilitarized zone where you keep some israeli troops in gaza to keep the peace. >> so the palestinians will never have a country, right? so israel will continue to colonize the west bank, which it is and no one can deny that. >> have you been to the palestinian part of the world as well?
9:16 am
>> you're all under 40 years old here. that means if you were -- >> not everybody but thank you. >> if you were all palestinian, your entire lives would have been spent under israeli occupation. you would be ticked off, too. let's face it. >> but they have tunnels they're utilizing. it's all of that stuff. >> ma and pop palestinians aren't using tunnels. >> i want to say this, though. hamas is not actually fighting for the palestinian people. they're fighting for their own terrorist organization. >> hamas is a terrorist organization of the same as isis and the same as the other sunni extremist groups that is true. however, there is only this wrinkle. that they were voted and won a majority like the arab spring nations. >> one lucky guy got the word there. >> i don't know how lucky i am today. >> congress is on summer break and still no resolution to the border crisis. texas governor rick perry saying he has much bigger concerns than
9:17 am
just the migrant children. one restaurant offering a 15% discount. did you see this one? there's a catch and it's stirring up what you might call a holy controversy. >> there's an atmosphere here of an open heartedness. >> i think it's a reflection on the ownership and what they feel and value is important. h. heart. did someone say burn? try alka seltzer reliefchews. they work just as fast and are proven to taste better than tums smoothies assorted fruit. mmm. amazing. yeah, i get that a lot. alka seltzer heartburn reliefchews. enjoy the relief. you pay your auto insurance premium every month on the dot. you're like the poster child for paying on time.

we'll give you $150. comcast business. built for business. >> this has been a heated conversation. twitter is on fire. you can tweet us and let us know your thoughts and we'll continue the conversation. welcome back to "outnumbered." it's monday. a restaurant in north carolina is giving customers a nice discount if they do one thing, pray before you eat. 15% off for saying grace. the praying in public discount did not get any attention, really, until one of the customers' receipts went up on facebook and showed the discounts. the owner says she's been offering the price cut for the past four years but it's not set in stone, kind of random. >> we don't tell the people they're getting a discount. we've never promoted it. we just present the ticket.
9:22 am
a lot of people on the internet right now have a lot of negative things to say about it. it's just an attitude of gratitude. >> one of those critics wrote, quote, hello. this is discrimination. god is certainly not with you on that, end quote. not all the comments were negative. a supporter of the discount wrote, i wish more businesses would have the guts to do this regardless, we pray anyway, end quote. andrea, which side do you pick on whether or not this is fair to the atheists who go into the restaurant or it shouldn't matter? >> if atheists don't like it, eat somewhere else. who cares? these restaurant owners can do whatever they want. i'm the daughter of restaurant owners and they had bible verses on their menus and think mom as attitude was, if you don't like it, march down the street and go somewhere else. i think this is lovely.
9:23 am
i love this woman is encouraging attitude of gratitude. i love it's done randomly so it's not a policy that you can manipulate. if you want to go in there and fake pray to get a discount, you can deal with the big guy after that. >> so mary's gourmet diner is what it's called. she has something in common with you. her ties were her parents and her dad was a preacher and a missionary and that's why she feels that attitude of gratitude is so important. >> how often do we hear about hollywood celebrities getting 50% discounts because they are showing up at restaurants and they are who they are. show up at a restaurant across the street in new york and i guarantee they're going to take something off the bill. i don't look at it as discrimination at all. i look at it as you could like somebody and take something off their bill. you could like something about them but i don't think this is any different and actually a very positive influence on society. >> what about the idea of fake pray sner
9:24 am
>> i think that people will make it obvious that they're praying but there are going to be people that go in there and actually do pray. if she wants to reward them for that, they can. she says you don't have to be christian. she doesn't care what religion you are. if you're taking a moment to be spiritual and that's important to her and she's the establish -- own of the establishment, more power to her. >> you're the attorney and they say, look. i was just in this restaurant. it made me uncomfortable. my kids were there. i didn't want the people next table getting a prayer discount because they were praying. what do you say as the attorney? >> their discomfort is not an issue because people can be uncomfortable in a restaurant for various reasons. whether or not the restaurant is legal is an interesting question. it is discriminatory. you charge you one price and you another price. let the lawyer finish his legal
9:25 am
analysis. >> all right. >> please. >> there have been discriminatory pricing on all kinds of reasons over the years, some of which are specifically illegal under the constitution of the united states and under the statutes of the various states so it would be an interesting legal question. now, i don't care. i think that the attitude toward public prayer is way too hyper ventilating in this country. i have no problem with people praying. they can pray anywhere else they want. whether or not the discount is legal is not an issue. >> how many times can you give discounts at people at restaurants who wear red, white and blue? that happens all the time. wear your flag shirt and get a discount. you bring your parents in and you get a discount. >> race, age, gender are specific areas where they -- the discrimination based on any of
9:26 am
those things is -- >> i mentioned this to my husband and he said, given his restaurant background and maybe you can say this, too, andrea, with some of the stuff they do to the food, you might want to pray over it. >> that is true. >> it was all delicious. >> definitely. a possible new trend emerging on the campaign trail. have you seen it? who candidates want on the trail with them and who they are telling, thanks but, yeah, we can do without it. no thanks. when it comes to good nutrition...i'm no expert. that would be my daughter -- hi dad. she's a dietitian. and back when i wasn't eating right, she got me drinking boost. it's got a great taste, and it helps give me the nutrition i was missing. helping me stay more like me. former president. democrats don't want to be associated with barack obama right now but republicans are dying to be associated with mitt romney. candidates, campaigns donors and competitive races are calling, saying can we get mitt here? aids say romney will lend a hand to candidates in west virginia, and other places. let's talk about mitt romney right out of the gate. you see people saying they wish they would have voted for mitt romney. is this good to get mitt romney in? people are talking about -- >> bring the conversation back to the economy. people care about the most and that's getting people back to work. that's addressing making this country more business friendly again. that was mitt romney's message and we want that back right now, especially during the tough times we're currently in. everybody has looked at the unemployment rate last week and thinks it's a great thing. it doesn't really represent the
9:32 am
double digit unemployment we still have in this country. meanwhile, what are democrats going out there and raising money on? what are they running on? the idea of comboechment and trying to like make the republicans look silly, that's what they're going after. they're not even using that word. i think they want mitt romney to bring that message back. they want people to prosper. >> i don't think they have a lot to run on, democrats. while you were talking, i heard her go, oh, he asked about mitt romney. why? >> not a third run. he already lost a couple of times. i think he has a great message. i don't think there's a messenger. i don't think he inspired voters. amid horrific times, he was not able to beat barack obama last time. i think there's a role here to play in terms of other country. i think when people look at him as the candidate, i think they're increasingly uninspired so i want new blood running for president this time. i want fresh blood, someone new.
9:33 am
>> i think mitt romney we have to be -- he wasn't good at running for president. is it because he's unscathed? we know that presidents in their second terms get unpopular and president obama is facing what others do, the candidates don't want to be near him. how should republicans approach this cycle? what should they talk about? >> you asked me whether or not it appears because romney is unscathed next to the president. maybe it's because he appeared to be unwise next to the president when it came to certain issues we're dealing with right now, like russia. when you look at the juks ka position between what mitt romney said about the growing threat with russia and what barack obama candidate said and the debates about russia, the two are completely opposite and one is clearly right and one was clearly wrong. but i think sandra is on to something with the economy,
9:34 am
whether it's mitt romney or whomever for the republicans. on vacation recently, my husband and i were sitting in a small restaurant and one of the servers said i'm sorry you had to wait but our bosses cut us back because all the workers are part time. you're here in between shifts. and i kept hearing over and over about the job numbers last week. i'm like, what? i'm on vacation. but it was because there are no full time jobs. only part time. republicans could maybe run on that. >> geraldo, does it point to a lack of other talent? the g.o.p. that republicans are turning to mitt romney? i like mitt romney but i'm thinking, is there anyone else that they can bring on the stump? >> if i was mitt romney, i wouldn't campaign for anyone that didn't aggressively and enthusiastically campaign for me so i would use that as a great limiter. forget about them. not going to be there. secondly, i'm not sure that sandra is right anymore. i think if the president was speaking the truth when he said we've added 200,000 more jobs
9:35 am
last month, first time since 1997 this length of time we've added this many jobs so it may be that the economy has an issue that's fading. i think harris in the global picture is correct when she says romney had the russian threat more accurately than the president of the united states. but then now to your larger point, you have no christie, is it going to be jeb bush? in between jeb bush and mitt romney? i don't see him -- >> you think people care that many about the bridge situation or idaho where they need jobs? >> those little things mean a lot. >> that's a very interesting subject. we do not have enough time for that. >> all right. new twist in the search for a mom lasting 11 days ago. what police are saying about a possible new lead plus texas governor rick perry says the overflow of young children is a side issue and not the real story. what he says is the state's biggest threat and right after the show, don't forget to head to the web for overtime.
9:36 am
9:40 am
>> congress now on summer break and the president about to turn his attention to the africa summit starting today. but still no resolution to the crisis on our southern border. texas governor rick perry saying the issue of thousands of migrant children still in limbo is just a, quote, side issue. republicans citing the number of illegals charged with violent crimes since 2008. >> what we are substantially more concerned about in the state of texas, and i will suggest to you across it country, are the 80% plus individuals who don't get talked about enough who are coming into the yat illegally and committing substantial crimes.
9:41 am
these individuals are responsible for over 3,000 homicides and almost 8,000 sexual assaults. i wish the president would respect that desire of texans and citizens of this country to secure the border. that is the real issue here. >> meantime, the president saying he's prepared to act alone on the border crisis with or without congress. amid reports that the white house plans to defer the deportations of millions of illegal immigrants. >> i think congress has to sit down and have a serious look at the rest of this constitution and that is that we don't want to say, and i only say that on this program because i want to encourage the president, please don't put america into a constitutional crisis. please don't do that. there's too much at stake in this country to be deciding that you can take over the constitution and write it that well. >> what do you make of the fact that of governor perry pointing out that the unaccompanied
9:42 am
children we're talking about every day, this is just a side issue compared to the illegal immigrants who are coming into the country and committing crimes? >> i think he's absolutely right. and i think everyone is afraid to point out this impeachment issue when it comes to president obama because it's totally unrealistic. we have a president not enforcing the law. he's getting up every day and deciding which components of this law he thinks should be enforced and which ones shouldn't. you're talking about executive amnesty to millions of people. so if you're going to talk about who is forcing the impeachment issue, this president is forcing that issue. he's forcing us to bring that up because he refuses to enforce the law as they stand. >> do you think without president obama that anything would get done premidterm right now? just take him out of the picture. i've not seen any lawmaker who particularly embraces this as much as rick perry, the governor of texas. if you're running in november, people don't want to touch this. >> if rick perry just said that
9:43 am
80% of the undocumented immigrants are criminals that are going to commit violent crime, he doesn't know what he's talking about. i challenge him absolutely. >> the governor of texas -- >> the governor in the same state of the state mentioned how terrorists were sneaking across the southern border frm as far as i know, there's not a single documented case and i've done documentaries on the southern border about that and steve king, the iowa coiningman -- congressman who is talking about impeachment, that's the best way to give democrats what they want. i will remind everybody he's the congressman who said that the mexicans are all coming across, they are built, they have melons -- calves the size of melons because they're carrying all the dope as if every immigrant is a dope smuggler. they're going to vote against the republicans, vote against the steven kings and the rick perry. >> there are illegal immigrants coming to this country and that's a fact. they are committing crimes.
9:44 am
>> there's no question, there's no question that they're committing crimes. >> they commit crimes at a lower rate than citizens of america. >> i cannot believe it's 80% of those coming across the boarder. the bill that the democrats and republicans worked on in the senate allowed for illegals to commit a number of crimes and still get amnesty. i will say this, though. i do agree with the geraldo on the impeachment issue. steve king talking about it is not the way to go. when you think about impeachment, you're talking high crimes and misdemeanors. if i were the g.o.p., you have to wait and see what president obama does. then i say you take it to the courts. then you let a court decide whether this is the right thing to do. if they want to hold the president in contempt of court, president obama will likely say, forget it and ignore the courts. then we'll have a constitution crisis on other hands. >> we're already seeing democrats fundraise on this issue z. and steven king is a
9:45 am
radical. we play him and i know because i've been to him many times. he's unreasonable. but when hes things like impeachment, this is not a president who committed treason, who lied under oath. this is not a president who committed a high crime or miss demeanor. >> there we go, andrea has the last word on that. mayor of an american city lifting a water ban that cut off tap water to nearly a half million people. we'll tell you what water tests are now revealing. plus new research that if you're a nice guy on a first date, you may not get that second one. but a womanizer, however, you've got a better chance of a next date? we'll see. there's a gap out there.
9:46 am
that's keeping you from the healthcare you deserve. at humana, we believe the gap will close when healthcare gets simpler. when frustration and paperwork decrease. when grandparents get to live at home instead of in a home. so let's do it. let's simplify healthcare. let's close the gap between people and care. ugh. heartburn. did someone say burn? try alka seltzer reliefchews. they work just as fast and are proven to taste better than tums smoothies assorted fruit. mmm. amazing. yeah, i get that a lot. alka seltzer heartburn reliefchews. enjoy the relief.
