dangerous thunderstorms. i am jon scott. >> i am patty brown in for jenna lee. one person is dead after mud slides slam california. several people were rescued from cars and debris from the mud slides is block off two towns and leaving thousands of people in shelters. >> we have meteorologist janice dean. we have adam houseley on the scene in california. adam? >> reporter: yeah, jon, the wall of mud and water that came down late yesterday afternoon gave the people 80 miles east of los angeles, no warning at all. we have a view from the air one of the major mud slides cut off several thousands of people in from the main road. in and out only now on foot.
10:02 am
they are trying to reopen the road. it was a wall of mud that shut it down. a number of people stranded on either side. many kids in a camp ground. they are okay. but they will not get out until the mud is moved. residents here say heavy rain and no one expected anything. and they were moving the cars and the water came down. two others mangled under the mud. the owner said he got out just in the nick of time. >> it was a eight foot wall suddenly off of the mountain. and rocks the size of cars in it. and it was incredible power. it was incredible. >> reporter: some of the rocks and mud is massive. the piles from the road way,
10:03 am
they haven't given us a time but one of the boulders is four feet around and buried by the sand. it is sandy soil and comes down quickly and came down from areas that are not normally a wash. some of these other washes are narrow creek sides 3 or 4 feet wide. residents here say they never saw anything like it and goes back to the fact that they had major weather from the south. we'll talk to our meteorologist about that. and combined with the humidity that caused the thunderstorms. >> weather unusual for this time of year, adam housely, thank you. >> a pair of wildfires burning in northeast california quad rupling. eight homes ketried. a long- term care hospital evacuated and resident move to
10:04 am
redding. and now crews are battling 14 fires in california. firefighters are making progress fighting a wild wild burning near the oregon and california border. it took three homes and threatening nearly 300 buildings in all. lightning sparked a new round of fires in oregon. >> can crews expect relief? also watching a big storm in the atlantic that was upgraded to a hurricane. meteorologist janice dean is live in the fox extreme weather center. >> it is active in the northwest. they are going to get thunderstorm activity and bringing much needed rainfall. dry storms could spark wildfires danger. it is fire weather watches from parts of northern california and oregon. you can see over two dozen
10:05 am
wildfires burning in the west. we'll get moisture in here, however it is so dry and the moisture might evaporate before it hits the ground and spark the potential wildfires with lightning. there is where we will get the rainfall. much needed and too much of the same thing can give us flash flooding conditions. >> and even though the moisture is a good thing, it is going to be bad if we get flash flooding and lightning. we'll talk about bertha and it is not going to affect the u.s. we'll get rough surf and it moves north and eastward. and eastern canada needs to monitor this. and in pacific, a category storm, and a tropical storm is making a bee line toward hawaii. this is gisselle, and watch as
10:06 am
we go through the next couple of days going through the big island of hawaii, as a tropical storm, they don't typically get strong hurricanes or tropical storms in this region and hurricane hunters are out investigating the situation. we'll keep an eye on it. patty, back to you. >> thank you. >> and new numbers out. and highlighting how fed up voters are with the congress. and the marist college poll, most people think that members of congress are not doing their job. three percent said congress is productive. and that is congress' favorably slightly up from the record low of nine percent in 2013. what is going on here? we'll talk to bob cusack editor and chief for the hill. i think the three percent that think congress is very
10:07 am
productive is not paying attention. why do people hate congress so much? >> they haven't solved border crisis or immigration reform in general. the house, no one owns congress. the republicans control the house, democrats control the senate. and so when people blame the congress. republicans blame the senate and democrat blame the house. i have never seen this much hatred for congress. >> the president blames congress for a lot of his problems, too. he especially points to the republican- led house. >> he lastly called it mean, the congress. and he's portraying the congress as republican. and it is a divided congress. and until one party owns this, we'll see these numbers be very low and maybe lower.
10:08 am
one of the interesting thing. house members running for the senate and if you are a congressman trying to get a promotion, that can hurt you. three republican congressman tried to win a primary senate seat they all lost. democrats trying to get a promotion in iowa or michigan. the washington insider tag will be used by both parties. >> maybe each party owns one house of congress. and people of all political stripes, seem to be fed up. and if you look at the numbers, 74 percent of the democrats disapprove of the job that congress is doing. and republicans, 83 percent say it is doing a bad job. and 82 percent of the independents. really disgust crosses political boundaries. >> and that's what president obama has to tap into. his numbers are low.
10:09 am
and congressional numbers are historically low. and now president obama has to go after the republican- led house to save the september from republicans getting it. it will be interesting challenge for the white house. >> bob, from the hill, good to have you on. >> thank you. >>y w >> we want to hear from you. do you approve or disapprove of the job that congress is doing? click on fox news.com and click on america's asking. fox news alert israel considering pulling out of gaza without a ceasefire agreement from hamas. a seven- hour humanitarian ceasefire managed to hold up. israel allowed much- needed supplies and now the israel

old ban of drinking his town's water. why people may still have a difficult time getting clean water. and was a missing mom in oregon spotted to getting on a ferry. what investigators say about the mysterious disappearance of jennifer houston. >> it is serious enough to look at it and make sure that everything pans out. --i don't know my credit score. that's really important. i mean-- i don't know my credit score. don't you ever want to buy a house...like, ever? you should probably check out credit karma, it's free. credit? karma? free? credit karma. really free credit scores why let erectile dysfunction get in your way? this is the age of knowing what you're made of. talk to your doctor about viagra.

10:16 am
>> a missing oregon mom. filling up nor a gas station and vanished. a couple said they thought they saw her boarding a ferry in washington state. dan? >> yeah, jon, police are taking the sighting seriously. they saw her in the dark green lexus on a ferry to friday harbor which is washington state. they described the cracked windshield and said she had a band-aid on her left cheek. since then, the san juan sheriff's department hasn't been able to see the tape because it has to be cleared by the homeland security department. >> she disappeared from dunndee, oregon.
10:17 am
and went to run errands and withdrew less than a hundred bucks in cash and brought snacks and then her phone went down and no activity on her credit card. she and her husband had been planning a vacation on san juan and had to cancel. she is familiar with the area. it is a tourist area and the words out with the local businesses. but so far no second sighting reporting. >> travel upwards of 300 miles to take a week to do that and not be sighted or spotted through any traffic cams or surveillance just seems a little far fetched. >> they are not giving up hope. police in oregon call would off all ground searches and the trail has gone cold. he passed the polygraph test and there is still no evidence that

the coast guard is celebrating 224 years of saving lives on the high seas and yes, they were at it again. first washington state, where crews rescued a severely hypothermic man after his boat caught fire and he had to abandon ship and jump on the water. he had been on a life ra ft. >> and in hawaii, the coast guard rescued eight people after their boat sank yesterday. the helicopter crew swooping in to help them. no injuries were reported. a u.s. marine jailed in mexo after taking a wrong turn in the the border in court today. they are expected to call two
10:23 am
mexican custom agents who questioned the marine. thank you both for joining us. as you mentioned, the two custom agents searched his car and questioned him and two mexican soldiers that were present that night. the lawyer said they violated his rights under mexican law and all of that evidence from that time period should be thrown out. but you say in mexico you are guilty until proven innocent. >> yes, that is the difference between united states and them. we are innocent until proven guilty. it is opposite in mexico. this hearing is encouraging. the second half of a 1, 2 punch on behalf of the sergeant. and that is because originally, factually you don't have the goods on me because i made a mistake and there was no in malicious intent.
10:24 am
today's is procedural and similar to what we are doing in the united states if we are making a fourth amendment due possess. you can't use that evidence. and so this is an opportunity for the sergeant perhaps to be sprung loose today. >> tanya. you said the facts support the charges against the marine? >> the facts when you look at them objectively. clearly his position is that he made a mistake. legally, in fact, he crossed into mexico with illegal guns and that happen and so that is against the law and he is appropriately charged with that. mexico has every right to regulate their borders just like we do and there are many, signs before you cross in mexico you are about to go in mexico.
10:25 am
and we do not allow weapons in our country. the fact he did those makes the charges appropriate. whether or not he will be convicted we have yet to get there. >> jana we showed before and of pictures. clear now, and maybe not all clear back then. it was a little a rrow. and a now it is it a neon. he mussed the turn to stay in the u.s. and there was a lie when he said he never been to mexico. couldn't he miss the turn. i have gotten lost. >> you were not the only one and a lot of people have. if the judge buys the fact that there was no malicious intent and he made a mistake coming in mexico. he sang like a cainary. i got it all. but i didn't mean to be here. that supports his defense.
10:26 am
and i don't care, if you are a defense attorney your goal is one thing. give the judge a reason to do what you want him to do. today is another attornopportunr the judge to do. that it is another chance for him to go home and that's what we want here. >> and what that shows. that is a good point. we say he will not get a fair trial in mexico. they have given him several hearings and an opportunity to change lawyers and he's on the third or fourth lawyer of his choosing and an opportunity to be heard and call witnesses and cross examine those witnesses. i think it is premature to say he is not going to get justice in mexico. when you are lying, when a defendant starts to lie to law
10:27 am
enforcement. he can sing like a cainary. but innocent people don't lie to law enforcement. >> thank you both for joining us. >> thank its, patty ann. >> terrorist advance in iraq to seize for towns and isis captures the country largest dam and given the militants the ability to flood large cities. >> it is harder. 836 a month. i have flour and water i can eat. you got to eat something. k yo your sacrifice and thank you for your bravery. thank you colonel. thank you daddy. military families are uniquely thankful for many things,

eating". is this a new problem or are we looking closer at it. >> it is more of a problem. we always had people with poverty and hunger in the u.s. and now three- quarters of them are working. it is taking on a new cast. >> what does it mean? >> usda came up with this. sometime in the last year you run out of food entirely. in europe it is one in six. >> and so in one in six have nothing to eat at some point? >> at some point during the ear, yeah. >> we have some of the pictures from the magazine. they are beautiful and poignant and sad at the same time. a father pushing his child in a stroller outside of houston. and houston is a wealthy city or
10:35 am
so you think and he's on the way to the food pantry. >> houston has a problem with hunger. we went to houston and the suburbs and they have highest concentrations of working families on food stamps in the country. >> and another photo, they are picking grapes out in the woods and using grapes and mushrooms to supplement. >> it is growing there. and it is going to be fresh and healthy. it is still sad. >> americans are self relint. and that family in iowa, they went to the food bank a lot. but the food you get there is processed and starch and sugar and so to get their kids fruits and vegetable they went foraging. >> and just the position of images. a woman sitting in the car and she has enough money to afford

a car, but the meal is fast-food. >> it is a contradiction of hunger. they are working and if you want to keep your job, you need a car and cell phone. and food being the one thing that they can play with in their budget and it means they are sticking with convenience food. she tracked around all day. and she can't cook a lot and she ended up getting the convenience that she can. >> it is bad enough that you are seeing it strike young families. but also the elderly, they are are on fixed incomes and don't have the option of going out. this is a 74-year-old retired school teacher who lived in a hotel rooming. >> she's living in a down in the ramadda inn that they converted

geographic. >> thank you, again. >> troubling new developments regarding the crisis in iraq. hundreds of people are trying to escape after islamic militants pushed further in the area. they have taken control of the country's biggest damn. leland viter is live in the pentagon with this. >> reporter: this is clearly a major gain for isis and continues the narrative of them crossing over iraq unimpeded by military force. keep in mind the dam and oil folds were guarded by kuredish troops and they were battle hardened fighter ares. and now, you have much of that area under the control of isis and consider this when you think about the dam in mosul.
10:39 am
but that dam feeds down in the ti gresz river. not only do they control that area but the valley. they can starve them or flood the entire area. isis is on the move and that is a threat to the united states national region and the security of the american people and that's what we should be focused on. and we should be using air strikes and advising the iraqi forces. and using air strikes and support their operations. >> as this continues by isis. they are instituting sharia law. they are are continuing to consolidate people and forcing people to flee the brutality in the city. there is pers kougz of christians and those kind cans of things. and here in the pentagon we
10:40 am
talked about the new gain and what if anything that the united states might do to help. as of now, there are no plans to change or expedite the current amount of help they are planning to give the iraqi military. >> a pivotal moment in gas a. israel is considering to pull forces out of gaza without a peace deal with hamas. we'll discuss it with a diplomat who has vast experience in the middle east. >> trying to make it across the cables of a bridge, did he get there? no, i'll get it! let me get it. ah uh, i don't want you to pay for this. it's not happening, honey. let her get it. she got her safe driving bonus check from allstate last week. and it's her treat. what about a tip? here's one...get an allstate agent. nice! switch today and get two safe driving bonus checks

possible unlateral ceasefire. >> i think the israelis have in mind, they don't want a agreement negotiated with egyptians and hamas, and they were worried that they would give hamas a gain. they don't trust agreements with hamas. they feel they can put pressure on hamas and the world would put pressure on hamas to stop. and palestinians, if israel is not firing and they said we will only fire if fired on, that may create leverage on hamas to stop. >> much is made of the lopsided casulty count. 64 israeli. and israel said they are using civilians as human shields and hiding the weapons in the schools. the state department came out
10:46 am
strongly on the latest attack. three hamas mill at that points were on motorcycles and israel struck and killed three militants and 40 others were hit with it. you don't strike when you cause collateral damage. >> there is a dilemma that the israelis face. if they are looking at particular targets to cause great destruction with israel. they have to weigh the consequences of not striking and including those islamic jihad leaders. israel pulls out and that is thinking, does it make sense for the target or not. they have to think of the consequences of doing it or not
10:47 am
doing it. one response is the casulties. and not just that hamas is using civilians as a shield, but they protect themselves and they protect their leaders and fighters and rockets. and they don't protect their people and israel uses an iron dome and civil defense means. and israel is trying to protect the public and win sympathy. and what they are going to do and they are countered by hamas. and what about the u.s. handling of the situation so far. what do you think? >> i think secretary kerry tried to produce a ceasefire and the ceasefire would have allowed israel to continue to destroy the tunnels. once that ceasefire came 72
10:48 am
hours, came to being, 90 minutes afterwards, hamas carried out an ambush and that led the israelis to conclude. do it unlaterally and no deal. and hamas doesn't gain and we take advantage of the new alignment where egypt and saudi arabia and jordan and palestinian authority. and israel all has the same interest that hamas and the brotherhood should not gain. >> john? >> well, this is not how most people spend the 21st birthday. we'll tell you why the guy was thrown in jail accused of a major student high over the american city. and the doctor with the ebola virus treated in a hospital in atlanta. are we at risk of ebola outbreak here on u.s. soil?

a fox news alert. sad news that the former press secretary to president ronald reagan, james brady, has died. you might recall that brady was shot and seriously injured in the assassination attempt on president ronald reagan back in march of 1981. he fought for years afterward are on behalf of efforts to control guns. president reagan's press secretary, james brady, who had been in failing health for some time, has died now at the age of 73. less than 24 hours from now, another ebola patient will be brought to the united states. dr. kent brantly is being
10:53 am
treated at a special unit of atlanta's emory university hospital. his co-worker, nancy writebol, is due to arrive tomorrow. this ebola outbreak ravaging three west african countries. the death toll rising dramatically. 887 people, so far, as liberia's government orders the bodies of victims cremated. dr. patricia salver is a board certified internist and emergency physician. a lot of people are wondering, doctor, is it safe to bring living ebola patients to this country? >> well, i would like to start out by re-assuring people that there is no danger to the general public to have dr. brantly and miss writebol brought here. they are being transported both in trprotective garments but al in specially constructed tents that will contain any bodily
10:54 am
fluids. what's different about ebola from, say, transmission of flu is that it is not airborne. you have to actually come in contact with the bodily fluids. then upon arrival, they will be taken to a special unit which is, again, specially constructed to be able to contain dangerous infections such as ebola. so there really is no risk to having both -- to the general public to having both of these victims of ebola transported here to the united states. >> i guess what has a lot of people concerned as well is that this ebola virus is supposed to be somewhat difficult to catch, although it's deadly and it's very bad if you get it, it is supposed to be difficult to catch. if that's the case, why are two trained medical professionals who knew all of the precautions are you supposed to take, why do they now have this disease? >> sure. well, i can't tell you exactly why they got it.
10:55 am
but remember, what they were doing was taking care of patients there. so they had a lot of contact. in fact, i recently read that miss writebol's job was to decontaminate people who had been with the patients. so they had pretty extraordinary exposure that you wouldn't really have as an individual in the general public, again. so if there is any risk in the u.s., it would be to the health care workers who are taking care of these two patients. but again, they are following infectious disease guidelines. it makes it highly unlikely. if i may, i think one of the problems we have in west africa is that they don't have the same kind of health and public health infrastructure that we have here. that's what's allowed this infection to become epidemic in those countries. >> the fact that these two americans were over there trying to help take care of those people who have been so badly afflicted by this terrible
10:56 am
disease, our hats are off to them. our hearts go out to them over this illness. doctor, thank you. >> absolutely. thank you. on a lighter note, it was supposed to be a letter saying sorry to an unhappy customer but united airlines is now accused of sending one of the worst apology letters, ever. that story coming up.
