9:01 am
islamic militants. two f/a-18 jets dropped 500-pound laser guided bombs inside targets in iraq. let me tell you what is in that area of northern iraq. we have u.s. military trainers stationed there. military action, the deepest engagement since our troops left in late 2011 after nearly a decade of war. i don't have to tell you that. you know. the pentagon is delivering food and water to thousands ever families trapped on a mountaintop after they escaped from islamic state extremists targeting christians and other minority groups. chief white house correspondent ed henry live from the south lawn of the white house now. ed, i want to ask you about the scope of this mission in iraq? >> reporter: harris, we may see more airstrikes in the hours ahead because one of president's top national security aides, ben rhodes, told us a short time ago, that the u.s. military has green light from the president. it gives the military a green light to launch more airstrikes on two scenarios.
9:02 am
one, if they believe the refugees, 40,000 christians, others being persecuted in northern iraq on a mountain without food and water, if they're any danger the u.s. military can move forward with us air strikes. if there is any sign isis is moving towards irbil, any key cities that could give them more territory and power inside of iraq after they already gobbled up a lot of territory in syria as well the u.s. air force can move forward with airstrikes as well. in terms of scope, the president made it clear last night and made it for years, obviously that he wanted to get out of iraq. they're making it very straightforward and up front at the beginning, they want this to be limited, targeting mission, no boots on the grounds, et cetera, at least in early hours here. that is what we're being told. >> to make it clear he ran on that. >> exactly. >> going to end the war in iraq. i'm curious. i know journalists in the press corps, we're always trying to put our thumb exactly on the

president's foreign policy strategy here. how does this play in. >> that is interesting. you raise a good question. yesterday we were pressing press secretary josh earnest and he will have a briefing 45 minutes or so, what will it take tore deeper u.s. military action in iraq or maybe even elsewhere? he kept saying only in the core u.s. interests. then the president will move forward with military action. i asked him the direct question several times, does preventing genocide qualify, he wouldn't directly answer. the president gave us more insight last night, saying if there is mass killings that are about to happen or going on the u.s., in his words can't turn a blind eye. when you ask about a strategy, harris, he will talk about iraq but what about syria? you had the u.n. and others say well over 150,000 already been killed by assad? so if you start applying the principle in other places around the world, a president who doesn't want to get deeply involved in military engagement, might sudden if he applies the principle, might find himself

and goes into quite a lost detail about the yazidis, never gets into specifics about christians. unbelievable. he has no right to invoke humanitarianism because he is not a humanitarian president. humanitarian president does not sit quietly by while hundreds of thousands of christians in iraq, forget about the rest of the middle east what is going on, doesn't say a word. not a word. >> interesting to get your viewpoint on that. speaker boehner echoed the same sentiment. i backed airstrikes that president obama has announced but they're still no strategy for these islamic militants. what is the long-term strategy? dean, he makes the point this is still a president and white house that is disengaged in what is going on over there. >> i don't think he has a long-term strategy at this point in time. i don't think he foresaw this happening although people have been screaming about a long time. i can't imagine what his long-term policy is. i know he wanted to get out of iraq. every place we fought a war, world war ii, germany, japan, we
