9:00 am
next sunday morning, 11:00 and 5:00 eastern, much earlier here in the west with the latest buzz. we start with the fox news alert, a fourth round of u.s. air strikes have now been launched against the islamic terrorists in iraq. it's an effort to try to protect the kurds from the rampaging isis terrorist group. but some lawmakers are charging the administration's actions will not be enough and come too late. president obama ordering the new strikes and drones and warplanes in north iraq. that's where isis continues to make gains, killing christians and other religious minorities in what is considered now a genocide, and warning christians to convert to islam or die.
9:01 am
this is america's news headquarters, the u.s. operation also serving as a humanitarian mission, airplanes developing food and water or for the estimated 40,000 yisidis. it comes as president obama warned the u.s. the response there in that country would be, quote, a long-term project. doug mcelway is live in washington with more. >> president obama said in 2011 that iraq was sovereign, stable. today he's offering air strikes there. the strikes happened at 9:00 this morning eastern time. the president is catching it from all sides, from his war weary base that wants nothing to do with his military actions, to his hawkish critics who says he's doing too little too late.
9:02 am
>> it's clearly very ineffective to say the least, the president made it clear that this was to avert the humanitarian crisis that they were taking these actions and to protect american military personnel, that is simply a very narrow and focused approach to a problem which is metastasizing as we speak. >> the president's supporters also took to the sunday talk shows today to defend his decision. >> we cannot send the troops, we must not send to the troops. how many times has this happened in history? when the united states with the best military in the world goes in and fights a war, leaves behind equipment and ordinance and then finds it being used, perhaps even against it in the next conflict. this is not new. it reflects the reality of war today. >> the president told reporters before departing for vacation yesterday that his decision not to stop isis earlier was based on the need for an inclusive iraqi government.e
9:03 am
he's pointing the finger to -- that rationale too is coming under attack. >> there's no political reconciliation in baghdad going to protect the american homeland. that has to be a commander in chief with a strategy and a vision, this commander in chief has no strategy, he has no vision. >> so far all u.s. aircraft p t participating in the air strikes. >> doug mcelway, thank you so much, doug, so as this question floats out there, that question being is the u.s. air strikes in iraq too little too late? here going to ask peter king when he joins a little bit later in this half hour. charges in genocide, right now happening on this sunday, the killing of christians and helpless yisidis.
9:04 am
fox's contributor and senior fellow at the american enterprise institute, ambassador, we have the sickening and shocking results of christian children being beheaded, their heads being put on sticks in mosul by these islamic terrorists and they even are burying women and children alive. why did it get this unspeakable point and can the obama administration do anything to end it? >> well, i think we can end it effectively, i think if the president were to declare that our objective is not the limited objectives doug mcelway just described but the destruction of isis which is a strategic threat to the united states and it's allies not just in iraq, but it's western allies as well. i think the president had not adequately explained, look, we knew isis had reached into iraq as far back as december, if it
9:05 am
took if only briefly falluja and ramadi, and they captured mosul over two months ago, sending hundreds of thousands of christians fleeing as refugees. this has been building a long time, and i think the president's been asleep at the switch. >> you mentioned mosul, that was captured by isis a month ago today. and the president said he didn't want to seem like he was helping maliki if he ordered american air strikes, does that hold water and what's your position now? >> he's hemmld contradictory opinions for a while. he said no air strikes until a true national government is formed in baghdad, that's not going to happen and i certainly don't think we should do anything militarily that helps al maliki, but the kurds,
9:06 am
peshmerga have been pleading for two months for american help and are only just getting it now. the tribal militias in iraq, even some former baathists have been fighting against isis, i think they're willing to do more. and obviously we have the syrian opposition inside syria, look, if isis can establish a state, if it can control territory, across that syrian-iraqi border, what it's doing to the christians and yisidis and maybe to the kurds right there in the area is simply a precursor of what it's prepared to do around the world. this is a group that's more radical than al qaeda, it puts the lie to the whole argument that we have heard the past several years that terrorism is on the road to being finished, this war goes on, right now the main front is in iraq and syria and we are losing. >> talk about losing, the reports that isis put those red
9:07 am
marks of doors of christians ordering them to pay the tax, convert or die. and you've got the kurds that we have protected for years with the no fly zone. look at that mark that's apparently used by isis. it's like the nazis. >> it's absolutely chilling and we just had a reuters report that it's being announced that over 500 yisidi women have been killed. this is only going to get much, much worse. we had a model of how to provide at least humanitarian assistance after the first persian gulf war, the bush administration, george h.w. bush administration, getting authorization to defend the kurds against saddam hussein, we ought to be trying to do the same again today, and we ought to be asem blg an
9:08 am
international coalition to help. >> finally ambassador, isis has these threats, they issued that tape, they want to see as they say the flag of allah raised own the white house. at the united nations, there was a group saying the very same thing, it's now 13 years later, just a few months after that 13 years ago, we had 911, they're not stopping. >> the war on terror is not over, islam islosama bin laden be dead, but james clapper said the threat is at least as great as it was before 9/11. isis has rised the these four months. >> john bolton, we always appreciate your inside analysis on these chilling issues that we are facing today. and eric, we have news out of gaza, palestinian negotiators accepting an egyptian proposal for a new 72-hour truce with
9:09 am
israel. the proposal could open the door for more talks in the long-term cease-fire in gaza, but only if israel accepts it as well. and so far, it has not responded to the news of this potential truce. connor powell is live from our jerusalem bureau, what is it about 7:08 there, any activity at this point? what's the latest. >> the international both the short-term and long-term cease-fire continue today, but a final agreement remains elusive, there are unconfirmed reports that the palestinis and the israels are now agreeing to a 72-hour short-term cease-fire. as we talk right now, we're getting reports that there are rockets being fired into gaza. at least six people were killed. israeli defense ministry said today they closed the main crossing into gaza for
9:10 am
humanitarian goods after a hamas rocket landed in the main building there, though we're still seeing exchange of fire from both sides, the intensity of the conflict has really lessened in recent days, we have seen a small track fraction of the lighting we have seen in the last weeks or so. it's not to say there's heavy fighting, but nothing like what we see even a week ago. they have accepted a cease-fire truce with the sort of guide lines of the egyptian proposal, the israelis have said nothing officially, but we hear that they may be willing to accept this. israel has said it's not going to negotiate with the palestinians until the rockets are stopped completely. while hamas has said they're not going to stop firing any rockets until the blockade that is enforced by israel and egypt is lifted around gaza. this five-week long conflict has really taken a toll on both sides, but particularly the civilians on gaza, 2/3 of the
9:11 am
1,900 palestinians killed were women and children. 64 troops have also been killed. the cease-fire talks are actually being negotiated and carried out by egypt. the u.s. is monitoring the situation, but they're not part of the overall discussions, this is really being carried out between the egyptians, hamas and the realities. >> we'll wait and see when the israelis will respond and when this prosoezed truce might again. thank you, connor for that update. >> nascar driver tony stewart is bu pulling of the of the race today. stewart's car accidentally struck and killed fellow driver kevin ware jr., he had gotten out of his car and was struck on the racetrack. >> his team said he would be
9:12 am
rationing today and just a couple of hours before race time reversed their decision and now the nascar sar is silting out. the crash occurred on a dirt track in upstate new york. this is the event which we cannot independently confirm. however it shows what appears to be stewart's car colliding with a car driven by kevin ward jr. ward's car spins out, then ward gets out of the kerry and starts walking along the track when tony stewart's car comes around and tries to confront stewart, he was truck by stewart's car. >> it's a shock. it's tough for track officials to keep things safe, but accidents do happen. >> any death investigation we are going to sit down with the district attorney, his staff and
9:13 am
review when the investigation is complete. people that witnessed it were horrified. they were extremely shocked by what they saw. >> now the rest of the race was immediately cancelled. nascar issued a statement saying in part, our thoughts and pra s prayers go out to the family and friends of kevin ward jr., we support tony stewart's decision to miss today's race. stewart cooperated with the investigation last night. but so far there haven't been any reports issued. the investigation so far isn't a criminal one. >> so sad. okay a deadly plane crash near the center of a major capital city, we're going to tell you where it happened and why some are now pointing the finger at the country's crumbling airline industry. >> and as we told you, there are more u.s. air strikes against those islamic militants in iraq this morning. but are those strikes enough to counter the attacks on

9:18 am
going to have almost no impact on isis. isis has a land mass on syria and iraq. for these air strikes to really be effective, they should be carried out in a massive way, we should be giving arms to the kurds, training the kurds. i think the president makes a big mistake when he tell them what he's not going to do. >> starting with this, general jack keane told maria bartiromo that the u.s. should target the banks in the middle east where isis does business. why hasn't that happened yet and do you know if this is part of the plan? >> i have no idea what the president's plan is, and i don't think the president knows what his overall plan is. and general keane, i have the utmost respect for him. i think he's told me right about the banks and why it doesn't
9:19 am
happen up until now, i think the president and his administration have been a state of almost denial. the president keeps talking about how he ended the war in i rack and tries to block iraq out of his mind and only now he's taking his last-ditch efforts in kurdistan. but i fully agree with general keane because the money they are getting, that's going to isis is for instance, the attacks cost maybe a couple thousand dollars, out of mosul alone, isis was able to grab over 400 million. we believe their assets are over a billion dollars right now. >> i want to go to this u now, in an article posted today on the atlantic. hillary clinton suggests that she finds president obama's approach to foreign policy oa y overly cautious. >> i certainly agree with
9:20 am
secretary clinton on this, i think the president's not only oafly cautious, he's in denial and he has this belief that his goal is to always tell the american people what he's not going to do, tell the enemy what he's not going to do and almost seems embarrassed to use american power. i wish secretary clinton could have said these over the last four years and not waited until she got out of office. if you're secretary of state, that's a serious issue, and there's only so long you can stay behind the scenes. as to the other pavt of your question, i'm sorry. >> i just asked if the president's sort of reluctance that his approach on foreign policy is overly cautious, whether that's hamstrung your agency in a way. >> isis is a serious threat to the united states.
9:21 am
they are more powerful than al qaeda was on 9/11. we have known for months that isis was going to make these advances. general flynn, he announced months ago what isis was going to do. this is the greatest threat to the u.s., they have thousands of foreign fighters. yet we are virtually doing nothing about it. the president is going to take no action against isis. >> and of course, americans want to know, are we -- what you guys are doing in your committee, in your department, sir, to make sure that you're protected here on the home front. chairman mike mccall, he's chairman of the foreign committee, we're working closely with jay johnson, who's the secretary of homeland security. the fact is we can only do so much, if the president does not take aggressive action overseas to stop isis, it's almost like he's putting out one fire after another. it's like he's coming up with an
