peshmerga, will make them more evenly matched against the militants who already have american weapons. weapons the islamic state is using came from the iraqi forces when they were abandoned. the decision to arm the kurd is an about-face for the united states which previously gave weapons only to the iraqi government. official says the weapon is will help the peshmerga take advantage of the american airstrikes. we have video from the cockpit of an f-18 fighter. officials say the fighter jets took out more militant targets over the weekend to a campaign the president says will that be over soon. video shows how precise the strikes can be. this is pentagon video. is it representative? we have no way to know. the bombs blew up militants convoys, incinerated vehicles and clearly killed anybody who was inside them.
12:02 pm
the strikes helped clear the path for the kurds to move in to the islamic state controlled territory. we'll show you the kurdish gains as described to us by the pentagon, over here on the pal. the peshmerga, the kurdish fighting force, report they have taken control of two northern villages that the militants captured. just a short distance from the capital of that region, irbil. this is irbil. the regional capital and these are ethe two continues. curbed fish official chaise say have happened religious minorities climb down from the mountain where they were trapped but reporters on the ground say tens of thousands of refugees are still up there. jennifer griffin is live from the pentagon. welcome become. what do we know about the weapons the united states is sending to the kurdish fighters. >> weapons coming knock different directions, sources tell is thecry and intelligence agencies are overseeing the shipment of weapons directly to

corridor for these yazidis, these tens of thousands thousanf refugees. the targeted airstrikes are limited. there have been 14 humanitarian missions so far, and an average of 60 reconnaissance missions a day. >> we assess that u.s. airstrikes in northern iraq have flowed missile -- slowed isles temp pore and their advances toward irbil. however, these strikes are unlikely to affect isil's overall capabilities or its operations in other areas of iraq and syria. >> so far the only weapons the u.s. government has provided the kurds, shep, are ammunition and automatic rifles. >> jennifer griffin at the pentagon. thank you. let break in jessie jane duff, retired u.s. marine gunnery sergeant. a lot of work to be done here.
12:05 pm
you wonder how long it's really going to be. >> absolutely. this is such a disaster going on right now. but the kurds have actually proven to be the only people that have supported the minorities and helped give them a safe haven. the person ma have been absolutely out there trying to aggressively overrule this isis, and i think it's in our best interests. otherwise we'll see the yazidis and christians and all those being pushed out, basically decimated. isis is a very die instructive force and if we think otherwise, without helping the kurd, we'll watch the collapse and slater and assassination of many more people. >> how can you sit and i watch a genocide happen. but you wonder what it is that's going to stop this move toward helping? where can we draw the line? if the genocide doesn't end without boots on the ground, we draw the line, but our thinking is the same -- i just don't understand what stops it. >> well, absolutely. i agree with you. what we can do is unmanned
12:06 pm
cruise missiles and attack isis forces spreading from syria into iraq. we must do something because without this we're going to see also problems throughout the region. isis is not limited to this area. their goal is to control the entire region, and other areas of east asia, which will become a threat to the united states. we also have the oil in turkey. those kurd are pumping oil into turkey that affects the rest of the world so we need to ensure the oil fly is not interrupted because we will watch markets collapse as a result of skyrocketing oil prices again. >> it would be nice to be able to help the iraqis here but we have a problem, gunny, i want to explain it. our problem is that you can take this back to the american invasion of iraq if you want to assign plame, but more recently, the problem has been with nouri al-maliki. the sunni minority did not feel in any way represented by this government in iraq, and nouri al-maliki, the prime minister, refused to bring them in.
12:07 pm
therefore what he has is many of the people who were affiliated we isis now, they don't want to be part of any islamic extremists but they need a way forward and isis is the only way they saw to get that way forward. gunny, the question now is, can you in any way support iraq, and if you do are you saying, al-maliki, you don't have to do anything right, we got your back? >> no. no. no. absolutely not. the sunni -- basically stood forward already and decided that maliki must go, and he must leave. we need to demand that he abide -- in order to get our support they get new leader palestine there that is cluessive to the shiites, brings in the kurds and the sunnies. otherwise the method he used create third civil war. he can no longer get our support and we need to make it clear if we are going to send in special forces, cia, operations to assays the iraqi army, which we probably more than likely want to do along with helicopters and weapons, maliki must get out of
12:08 pm
the way and ensure that the stability is brought back. bring the kurds to the table again. bring the shiites that are moderate and bring the sunnies back together. many people do not like seeing this destruction. >> marine corps gunnery sergeant retired. good to see you. thank you. >> trying to get nouri al-maliki to do the right thing for a long time. some lawmakers are warning that airstrikes may not be enough, and clearly they may not be enough to keep the islamic state from carrying out attacks on northwestern soil, but american soil is later. today is genocide. still, the republican senator

america? >> well, we went to the front lines recently and met peshmerga forces fighting there, and they are reinforcing they have -- they got new shipments of weapons and new artillery shells being pile up nearby. they have been able to take back two small towns that were taken from them. however, i don't think there are plans to take anymore right now. they did lose another town overnight, two nights ago, and they told us they do not have the capacity to con front american weapons. that's what they are confronting here. they're confronting american weapons in the hands of isis and they do not have -- they're very lightly armed force. they can't match that. >> the hope would be that the central government would be of more assistance here, but we all know that the myriad of problems with nouri al-maliki. what's the police -- political situation there given the actions of the president. >> we don't really know how much that situation in baghdad is going to complicate the situation in kurd stan.
12:34 pm
kurdistan is drifting away from iraq stead live by the day, and -- steadily by the day and this crisis in baghdad seems to only push it further away. there's now a buffer of isis forces between kurdistan and the shia government in baghdad. so they don't share a common border anymore. now nouri al-maliki is attacking the kurdish president, that is only going to make them alienate them even more. however we have seen the iraqi government giving in military aid to the kurds in the past few days. we know that new supplies have been reaching the kurds. the u.s. officials tell us that those supplies have been reaching them with the approval of the baghdad government and that some of those supplies have been coming via baghdad. so it's not clear whether this crisis in baghdad is going to actually cut those supplies or stop that cooperation or whether it will continue for independently of the crisis. >> based on your reporting, liz, do you see a way forward with a reunification of the regions
12:35 pm
there or does the future most likely look like something very different? >> i don't see how iraq is going to be put back together again anytime soon. it has split apart. de facto into three regions, shia in the south, sunni in the center, and a kurdish in the north. there ain't no force in the region in the country or the region at the moment capable of bringing those three segments together militarily or politically. i don't see when iraq is going to be put back together again. >> liz sly, the veteran reporter for the "washington post," the beirut bureau chief. thank you. >> thank you. >> security forces loyal to iraq's embattled prime minister, nouri al-maliki, stood guard in the streets streets of baghdad s the prime minister said no, i will not step down. this all happened after leaders of his own party decided to nominate somebody else to take over as prime minister. maliki gave a speech last night, a rousing speech, accusing
