>> any number of psychiatrists worth anything are probably saying that to themselves now because those of us who relish the fight because it is a fight, you have to declare war on depression if you're going to win. of course you want somebody on your side who believes there are a lot of arrows in his or her quiver of arrows to do battle. >> it is tough to see people suffer in silence, they don't want to be a burden to their family. open tomorrow or next week is better, they can climb out of it but imagine the dark despair when your brain goes black. >> there is this question of our comedians specifically more played by depression and other people or other stars. >> have treated comedians. anything that offers you the opportunity to dodge and weave around pain can be an asset and

a liability. money can do that because you can get further down a dark path before you cope with your demons you are distracted by a lot of luxuries, so can comedy. he had so many ways, robin williams, to avoid grappling perhaps with the early trauma, loss, et cetera, it would take a skilled person to coax him to say don't get distracted, don't go down that path. stay here with your pain. >> depression overwhelmingly strikes women. a lot of women suffer in silence because they have to take care of their family and finances and often times we are the last ones to take care of our own mental health. you say he was suffering from this debilitating depression disorder, so how easy is it to slip from a mild depression to something like that where you

feel the only alternative is suicide? >> that is a great and troubling question because this is a stealthy opponent, it creeps up on you, it is almost like it defeats your emotional immune system. it convinces you there is no hope and can do it while you are looking the other way. and then it is like i don't think i've done this good job with my business, now my business is crumbling. anybody are around, no, it is not, how did you come to that conclusion? the good news everybody should here is psychiatrists have never been better equipped to defeat depression. everybody can handle it if the weapons are deployed adequately. if it is a real wrestling match to the ground.

bridges spanning tens of millions to catch people. wouldn't it be more sensible to say let's rebuild the mental health system rather than build a net under the bridge. >> a lot of people have been so desperately hit by economic problems, the great recession, and people find even when they lose everything, it is difficult almost impossible but they don't lean toward suicide. the fact his career wasn't thriving, he had financial difficulties as well, is there something about being in the spotlight, is there a narcissistic element or something like that pushing people over the edge? >> those of us make any part of our living through on camera activities or performance may be more vulnerable beatin meeting k from the audience, that narcissism. it is like withdrawing a drug for some people provoking for
