we'll see how that goes. after days of violent confrontations between police and protesters in ferguson, some level of calm is returning to the streets there as the justice department begins an investigation. there are still protests going on there in ferguson, but the violence that we have seen in recent days has begun to subside. some believe that is due in no small part to the state's decision to place a state patrol captain who grew up in the area in charge of the response. >> i grew up here, and this is currently my community and my home. therefore, it means a lot to me personally that we break this cycle of violence, defuse the tension and build trust showing the utmost respect for every interaction with every citizen. >> u.s. attorney general eric holder meantime has been tasked with investigating the shooting and looking into the initial police response to the protests which many

believe has been heavy-handed and there are lingering questions about the militarization of police departments in general and whether some have gone too far taking advantage of a glut of surplus military gear par seld out to local departments around the country. >> do i think if the police department needs to be demilitarized? i think the police response has become peaft -- part of the program. >> a lot of small police departments around the country are scooping up a lot of equipment that used to be used for the military. >> let's talk about what happened. as you know, the texture of the protests much better. it was calm. reporters at the scene said can't tell you, the day before i felt my life was in danger. last night during the protest i felt it was peaceful. the president comes out, the attorney general makes a call. i think it's important.

also important the president of the fraternal order of police said mr. president, back off with your conclusions and condemnations about the police force from your vacation in martha's vineyard. >> your party in martha's vineyard. photos were released showing the president dancing in martha's vineyard. you in martha's vineyard making comments about what is going on here is hypocritical now. >> seemingly taking the arm away from the security there. a big difference maker is this appointment of the highway patrol to oversee security there. the gentleman you saw made a strong statement particularly to the young black community there saying if you need me, i'm here. i'll give you my address. come to me, really connecting back to the community i think will be a difference maker moving forward. >> he said i grew up down the street from here. he said there is not going to be any looting, not going to have businesses going up in flames anymore. we're going to have order.

this came from the governors office to keep order and make sure these small protests will be winding down as they were overnight. >> gas masks are off the officers. there will be a different tone and it was. >> among the critics rand paul. a lot of libertarians say i have a problem with the way police are armed and protecting themselves. i wasn't there. none of us were. i don't see video of this incident. to say they overreacted or underreacted i think jumps to conclusions. if you want to talk about past history, go ahead. make that transparent and open. if you want to make the police department better, sure. but to say they've got to stop with the muscle with the police department, stop being overaggressive or blame the community, i don't think we're capable of doing that at 48th and 6th. i don't think we're capable of doing that with the protesters at times square yesterday either. >> there is a growing portion of the republican party, the libertarian wing being led by rand paul who are upset by this. they are saying the mill --

militarization of police departments. they are getting the equipment from war. rand paul joining up with democrats. it is like an unlikely group of bedfellows now. >> to side note, the family did meet with an arm of the department of justice. it is a peacekeeping unit there, community relations service. apparently the family of the victim felt way more comfortable after the meeting and after a phone call that took place with eric holder. >> seven minutes after the hour. we have a major story yesterday. change of leadership in iraq and the president feeling as though essentially almost declaring victory with these humanitarian efforts and his effort to deescalate the would-be crisis of that small religious sect in northern iraq. 5000 of these men, yazidis are captured, 200 women are captured possibly put no slavery or forced into

marriages and the president saying crisis averted. here he is yesterday. let's hear. >> the bottom line is the situation on the mountain has greatly improved and americans should be very proud of our efforts, because the skill and professionalism of our military and the generosity of our people, we broke the isil siege on mount sinjar. >> no one is discounting how brave these members of the military were having gone in there having to choose. the horrific images having to choose which people to take off the helicopter. husbands getting off the planes, the aircraft and saying my wife and daughter and kids, you guys go on. i don't know if i'll ever see you again. there are mixed reports this morning that there might be thousands of refugees trapped there on that mountain. >> based on the contingency operations so bravely carried out, they are saying no further action at this point will be undertaken, but not everyone is agreeing a

victory dance should be occurring right now from the president. colonel oliver north is one of them. he spoke last night. >> the golfer in chief is going to have to focus for a little while. one of the only good pieces of news in this is isis, whatever they call themselves, have captured so much abandoned u.s. materiel and equipment that they are now recruiting and advertising for mechanics and technicians to maintain the armored vehicles. if we don't do more like get another carrier battle group out there, we've made a serious mistake. >> if someone told you that al qaeda is gathering in this one area and selling the oil and establishing a government, we would bomb them. yet isis is established there and we're saying iraqis, get your government together and decide what's important. i'll tell you what's important, destroying them. it's also important to know on that mountain, people that live there have a different portrayal of what's happening there. the only representative of the yazidi community said

this about the crisis being over: no way. it is not true. it is better now but it is not true that we are safe especially on the south side of the mountain. the situation is terrible. she estimates there are many trapped on mount sinjar, between 70,000 and 80,000. that was from monday. i don't know where all those people got to safety but it is hard to believe in one day they're trying to get out of choppers and the next day they're fine. >> they didn't need these extra pallets of food we're dropping. some of them were left untouched according to the pentagon this morning. but you heard what colonel north said about isis posting images of the military equipment they've captured. horrible. they've taken to twitter and social media. you go through these images, they've got armored tanks, armored humvees, uniforms, guns, ammunition. on the side it says property of the u.s. government. >> seized from fleeing government soldiers in

iraq, posted wildly on twitter, taunting the united states. this is certainly not over. no victory dance here. >> i love what the president has done taking action. i just wish we would go the rest of the way and understand there is iraq and there is isis. one has nothing to do with iraq and the other has to do with us. because they say and they posted even though they're focused on establishing a caliphate their eyes are on us. if things start blowing up here, we're going to go right there. that should tell you how important they are. keep in mind, i think there is some kind of rift with the military. rear admiral kirby yesterday, the situation in iraq remains dangerous. the president has been clear about our limited military objectives in iraq. they weren't speaking like that eight years ago during operations. >> but yesterday the president said we're going to keep our eye very closely on them. there are minorities that need protecting. he mentioned every member of the iraqi government. he mentioned the kurds, the sunnis, the shia.

basically every person who lives in -- and christians he mentioned yesterday would all need protection, which sounds like chaos to me. >> it sounds like he was saying a couple of things at the same time leading to confusion. >> while you were sleeping two missing amish men are home safe after kidnappers snatched them off the street in broad daylight. ainsley, what do you have for us? >> a happy ending to this story. the young sisters waking up in their own beds this morning. about 24 hours after they were kidnapped from their family's food stand in upstate new york. the two who are 7 and 12 years old vanished after police say they were abducted by two people driving a white sedan. a witness claims one of the suspects got out and put something in the back seat and when the car drove off

those children were gone. the little girls were alone at the time and police say the suspects took them to a house about 30 miles away and ordered them to stay inside. instead the girls fled. eventually they found a man who recognized them from the police sketch and that person returned them back to their home. thankfully the girls were not injured. just a little cold and a little wet. police looking at sex offenders in that community as they're hunting for the suspects. back to you. meanwhile, from one great anchor to another, welcome heather nauert. >> good morning, guys. texas governor rick perry says he's protecting the people of texas and the united states and we have brand-new developments to bring you this morning from that state. the first national guard troops just arrived on the texas-mexico border and manning observation posts in the town of hildago. their mission is to report suspicious activity.

governor perry calling up a total of 1,000 troops. they will cost about an estimated $12 million a month. texas asking the feds to pick up the tab. no idea if they will do that just yet. nascar drivers will start their engines this sunday without tony stewart. he is sitting out the race at the michigan international speedway. this will be the third race he skipped since he hit and killed kevin ward jr. in new york. the announcement comes as ward was laid to rest in upstate new york. family and friends, some of them wearing his shirt saying a final farewell to the 20-year-old driver. a changing of the guard at the tv show "meet the press." white house correspondent chuck toad is -- chuck todd is taking over for david gregory. gregory says i leave humbled and grateful. i love journalism and serving as moderator of "meet the press" was the highest honor there is.

is known as government. we don't like it. it is stamping on private enterprise, stamping on america's natural entrepreneurial spirit and we don't like it. >> it's gotten bigger too. when you look at the amount the government is spending per household, can you break down these numbers? >> in 2011, spending, you add it up -- federal, state, local spending -- it was $50,000 per household. that was greater than the median household income. can you believe that? that's what we've gotten to. government spending, add it all up and it's higher than median household income per family. >> how is this sustainable? what are we paying down -- this isn't paying interest. >> it is not sustainable because we're growing the debt because we're spending so much. the debt is growing. we're now spending over $6 billion every week on interest payments on our federal government debt. >> meanwhile tax revenues

welcome back. quick headlines for you now. the f.b.i. may have spied on you not because of something you did wrong, but because of a typo. according to the department of justice the bureau mistakenly targeted americans for wiretapping because of wrongly touched e-mails and social security practices. they are reportedly improving practices in the wake of this report. the i.r.s. reportedly exposed more than a million taxpayers to increased riive of fraud and identity theft. the agency failed to do background checks on private contractors who handled confidential taxpayer information. chew on that this morning. clayton. >> in a shocking announcement, robin williams' wife revealing he had parkinson's. she wrote this.

robin's sobriety was intact and he was brave as he struggled with his depression, anxiety as well as early signs of parkinson's disease which he was not yet ready to share publicly. that is shocking. joining me now, dr. marc siegel. is it possible that parkinson's disease causes depression? >> definitely an association. as a matter of fact, there is a lot of evidence that over 60% of parkinson's sufferers also have depression and the hormones in the brain are the same. you need dopamine in your brain to be happy. parkinson's depletes dopamine. a lot of people get depression who have parkinson's disease before they get the symptoms of parkinson's. that may have worsened his depression. i think it probably did. he always suffered from depression. it's not surprising that it became more and more severe as he was developing parkinson's. i'll tell you something else. i spoke to a top parkinson's expert last night who said watching him on television in the last year or two, he could see

some of the symptoms in the face. it's called a mask-like face. he could see it developing. >> on his new show -- the crazy ones, and the reports that he started drinking during that period on the show as well, that may be exacerbated it. what causes parkinson's? how did this come on and how was he able to keep it under wraps? >> i don't know how much longer he would have been able to keep it under wraps because some of the symptoms would have afnghted him as a great actor. -- affected him as a great actor. the tremors, shaking, the facial expressions, what he made his livelyhood add being one of the best. it is a disease that affects fine motor function. serotonin is a hormone in the brain affected too. if you take antidepressants, a lot of times patients get better. there can be a dramatic improvement in the depression from taking

antidepressants. >> we know he was dealing with a lot. with these chemicals from parkinson's being limited, he's not getting those hormones he needs to live a happy life, we also heard reports with the heart surgery. and we know a number of people without a doubt can feel enormously depressed and that can cause depression. not only did he have the heart surgery. he was also dealing with parkinson's disease. just a peskt storm of depression. -- a perfect storm of depression. >> any time you have a chronic illness it can increase your depression. the substance abuse issues. there is a great increase in parkinson's and people that use cocaine. the cocaine and alcohol were in the remote past but had a long term effect on him. >> michael j. fox suffers from parkinson's disease. he tweeted this. stunned to learn robin had p.d. a true friend. i wish him peace.

the state department is spending more than $400,000 on razor wire to defend the borders between the ukraine and crimea, part of a multimillion-dollar aid package announced by the white house in april. what do you think about that? your tax dollars going to the dogs. no, really, it actually is. the government spending money meant for the less fortunate on doggy day care and that is just the geng. a new report from senator tom coburn says federal tax credits meant to help out low-income communities are also going to recording studios, breweries and $65,000 sculptures. this seems to be pretty loose rules on what would stimulate those areas. coburn say, quote, when the government picks winners and losers, the losers usually end up being the taxpayers. a fun day at the park is no fun for this veteran. this marine says that six flags, the amusement park, turned him away and his entire family because he was wearing this t-shirt.

absurd films. i love the over the top cheesy one-liner action movies. that is what the expendables captures. all the fly movies, arnold movies. that is what makes these movies fun. if you're not familiar with the franchise, it is a group of mercenaries hired to take down the baddest of the bad guys. this time around mel gibson plays the bad guy of the film. i wasn't a huge fan of expendables 1 but expendables 2 was amazing. my problem with this one is it is pg-13. it is one of the most violent pg-13 movies i have seen in my life. parents, do not let your kids see this. all they did was -- >> i love when you do that. >> exactly. the violence is still there. again, don't let the pg-13 fool you. trust me on this. this is not for kids whatsoever. i still gave it a 3 out of

>> well, right now everyone is safe, sound, reunited with their families. both girls were found yesterday just about 24 hours after they were first reported missing. after talking with police and investigators, they say it's not too often that we have such a happy ending so quickly after they were last seen and possibly abducted. so here is what we know about how they were found. apparently they were dropped off at a stranger's house by a car about 15 miles south of here in richville. they walked up to this person's house and they immediately knew who these girls were. they were still in their amish clothes, which included bonnet and dress. they were then taken from this house to their parents' place, which is just about 15 miles or just a mile from here. and they were reunited with their parents. they had been talking with police and investigators so far to try and get some details as to just who took them, what happened in the time between when they were taken and when they were reunited with their

family. we don't have a lot of details yet from police and investigators about what happened. but they are giving us just a little bit of information, saying that it could be more than one person involved at this point in time. also if you were watching our coverage from wednesday and into thursday, they were interested in a four-door, white sedan that was seen possibly taking these two young amish girls. now they're saying the car that dropped them off might not be the same color. they can't confirm anything for us yet. so a lot of questions still to be answered. it is a great, great feeling here that this family has their kids back together. a lot of relief. but now they want to focus on catching the people who took them. >> david, obviously the amish culture separate from the local culture there. has that hampered the investigation in any capacity? >> reporter: police say that the family has been nothing but gracious and working with them. they did say that there are a

issue of excessive force and with regard to the police being forceful. like a lot of americans, we expect the president to invoke the rule of law. to invoke reason. he did to some extent. if you look at the shadings in his statements, he's clearly made a statement that the police were acting in an excessive way, violating rights not only of protesters, bers on the scene. so when you do so, you set a scene and you set an atmosphere, unfortunately i think, for continued discord and possibly violence in such a community. >> so you may disagree with him. there are some republican senators, including rand paul, who came out saying that the militarization of our police force is troubling to him as a republican, as a libertarian and saying he's troubled by the news stories of reporters being thrown out of mcdonald's with swat teams coming in when he was a little kid, that you were expected to get in trouble -- >> i don't know the circumstances in terms of the reporters being asked to be moved from the mcdonald's.

so the police are wrong, then they should be held to account. but the greater issue that needs to be examined is is there respect for the rule of law? is there an equivalency between police and rioters in terms of their conduct? and can we accept the notion that you can hold peace hostage for the notion of selective justice? we don't know the truth as to what happened in ferguson. we don't know whether this was a racist assassinned police officer or whether this was an 18-year-old, 6' 4, 250-pound man that was trying to take the police officer's gun away. the president may have a good idea based upon what attorney general holder has told him. but we don't know as americans and people in ferguson don't know. but whatever the circumstances are, i expect and a lot of americans expect from the president a call for reason and a call for rule of law. he did to some extent. but we have to understand that there also has to be a strong

robust statement that you can not equate peace and justice and hold one hostage for the other. the other issue is this is a huge, huge distraction. the militarization of the police, police tactics, police conduct. the underlying problem in ferguson is that the president has failed to create employment for african-americans in this community. >> plaque youth -- black youth unemployment at an all time high. >> twice the right race. 24% in the black community. it's double the same in the larger adult community. the president needs to come to terms with his failure on creating jobs for the african-american community. this is a tragic circumstance. we grieve for the brown family. we grieve for the police officer involved in this conflict. but we do have to come together and we have to come together based on reason and the rule of law, but also let's create jobs

missouri, are going to release the name of the officer who shot michael brown. the community there have been asking for the name. the family have been asking for the name. attorney general eric holder apparently spoke with the michael brown family. what do you think about the releasing of the name this late? >> i think it was inevitable. it happens in all criminal proceedings. once security was in place and the officer and cops take care of their own magnificently, there is no doubt about that. i think they could have done it even earlier, maybe to quell some of the violence. although a lot of the violence i think at some point took on a life of its own. >> no kidding. >> and was largely being driven, i think, by looters and rioters and people disconnected from the initial outrage they had over the death of the young man, of michael brown. that is appalling. there is a lot of things to say about this case. >> what do you think about the appointment there of the highway patrol, captain johnson? >> fantastic. >> he seemed to have a real

control over the tone moving forward. your thoughts? >> it was a scene when i left iraq in 2011, when i saw fields of military vehicles. and i said to myself and i said to others, what's going to happen with all this surplus hardware? now you see that much of it has gone to these mid-size towns where the chances of them having to use one of these giant armored cars is really pretty scant. there has been a militarization of the cops. i think a is absolutely true. and the police took the occasion, the rioters are at fault and the people in the streets, the anarchists and those who wanted to steal sneakers and stuff like that, i mean, i blame them. but the cops overreacted in this military fashion with totally tricked out, as if they were going up against isis and not some civilians. >> when the floods happened two years ago, that's the thing that saved so many people out of their house. they had these huge humvees because of national catastrophe. so i like the fact we used some

the community. listen to him. >> the problem is it's our reaction. it's how we respond. it's how we respond. you understand? those two men, mike brown and his friend, challenged the police. he told you to move to the sidewalk. you said no. we're gonna wait 'til we get to our destination. that's our problem today as african-american males and african-americans. we just feel like we're constantly challenged, so it's an ego thing. it's just a competition and it doesn't help. someone has to humble themselves. >> he went on to say, we've got to stop blaming white people for our problems. we've got to stand up together as a black community and stop the black on black violence in this community. what do you say? >> i say that obviously there is a root cause here. it is the disintegration of the family, the lack of dads at home. put that aside just for a second, i have instructed my sons particularly, now they're ones in his 20s and the other in

his 30s. when they were teen-agers, when you're confronted by a cop, what do you do? you say yes, sir. no, sir. that's it. if you have a beef with the officer, you resolve that later on when there is no temperature, there is no possibility of something going disastrously wrong. there is nothing good that comes from confronting a cop. when two guys, two teen-agers, i don't know really about michael brown's background or this buddy of his. but if the police accounts are true, that the cop was wounded, you know, his face was swollen after getting hit. the kid trying to get his gun, whatever. i don't know that. that will be resolved in a court of law after due process is given both to the officer who is being named today and to the family of the poor teen-ager, of the unfortunate teen-ager who passed away. that will be resolved. but for goodness sake, if you're confronted by a cop. that's what you do. you say yes, sir. no, sir. even if you're steaming inside. and i've been in that situation a million times.

that guy is spot op. >> i want to bring up something else. the president made some comments about how the police acted as he ascertained and he came forward and made them yesterday and he got a response from jim pasco from the fraternal order of police. i will contend discussing the police tactics from martha's vineyard is not helpful to calming the situation. i think what he has to do as a president and as a constitutional lawyer is remember that there is a process in the united states. >> i think the minor issue is that martha's vineyard gets a bad rap because it's an upscale resort. if he had said the yacht club where you and i have been spotted before -- >> i would have been outraged. >> he was alluding to the president's notion that police shouldn't bully civilians. he made some sort of statement there. >> i think in fairness to the president, maybe i would have had the sentences rearranged. i thought he tried his best to do a measured presentation. he started with the urban violence and the fact there is no excuse for rioting and looting. i think that he could have added

a little more emphasis to that and then segwayed into his other important points and i do believe that -- give the president credit where credit is due -- i i that is what led to the appointment of the state trooper which is what led to the conciliation or the tone changing. i think now the people of ferguson, missouri would look askance at those trouble makers from out of the community who have come there to really make anarchy and to loot. >> let's talk about iraq. the president came out and he said, i sent some people up there. it looks like crisis averted. here is what he said yesterday from martha's vineyard. >> bottom line is that the situation on the mountain has greatly improved and americans should be very proud of our efforts because the skill and professionalism of our military and the generosity of our people. we broke the isil siege of mount sinjar. >> not everyone agrees with that, though. a lot of people saying there is still people trapped there,

thousands still trapped there. no one is discounting the brave men and women who went in to actually rescue these people. >> in fact, i have a quote. it says it's not true. it's better now, sure. especially in the south side of the mountain. the situation is very terrible. there is still people there not getting any aid at all. there are 80,000 trapped on the southern flank of mount sinjar. >> this coming from a member of parliament and the azidi leader who was hurt attempt to go rescue. >> the mountain is not really the issue right now. i think that the -- >> they -- >> the urgency of the mountain is what was the catalyst for this action, but i have been saying for weeks and months the enemy, isis, is an exist tension threat to the united states of america. we had to pound these people two months, three months ago. i appreciate the tactical nature of the offensive against those besieging these poor people on the mountain, but for goodness sake, why the united states

the big birthday party took place or did not take place to make amends before they would sit at the same table at that party? >> there were no amends and if there was a phone call, it certainly wasn't an apology. it wasn't an excuse because what hillary said about obama, that don't do stupid stuff is not a strategy and that if he had taken early action in syria, things wouldn't be in the condition it is today. she had absolutely no intention of retracting any of that. >> so at least the words came out that they made amends, cleared everything up. then they sat at the same table at the party. how did that go? >> my sources tell me that what happened there at the party is that instead of it being a hugathon, it became a freezeathon and the clintons and and -- the clintons essentially ignored the obamas and the obamas got up from the table and danced almost the entire night in order to avoid having to talk

rehab and grooming center in new orleans. coburn saying, quote, when government picks winners and losers, the losers usually end up being you, the taxpayer. a day at the park certainly no fun for this veteran. this marine says six flags turned him and his entire family away from the park because he was wearing this t-shirt. the shirt supports the marines and it has a red, white and blue rifle on it with the words, keep calm and return fire. the worker said it would offend people. what do you think of that? a major victory to tell you about for religious freedom in the united states. the navy now says that the bible is going back into every hotel room on its military bases. you may remember earlier this week we told you about this, atheists had complained that bibles were in these rooms, so they were able to get the bibles removed from those rooms on bases. but the navy says that decision to get rid of them was made without consulting senior leadership in the navy.

quick headlines now. the f.b.i. may have spied on you, not because you did something wrong, but because of a typo. that according to the doj, they mistakenly targeted americans for wire tapping because of wrongly typed phone numbers, e-mails, social security numbers. the f.b.i. says it's improving its practices in the wake of the report. >> you feel confident? >> i feel so much better now. the irs failed to vet contractors with access to taxpayers' private information and the information could be at risk. an internal audit showed 1.4 million taxpayers names, addresses and social security numbers are at risk of fraud and identity theft. uplifting story. brand-new developments this morning on the immigration battle. the first national guard troops just arrived on the texas-mexico border. >> this has republicans gear up

for the likelihood the president will use executive action on immigration in the next few weeks. >> elizabeth prann is all over this story and is in washington. do you expect big news to come out this weekend as the president comes back? >> reporter: the only note we've heard from the white house is that it would be before summer ends. there is no guarantee it will happen on monday when he's back at the white house. but like you said, the president is expected and he has said as much to enact policy to deal with the crisis of unaccompanied minors, flooding the southern border. would he propose a legally binding executive order to grant legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants who are already here? and how would that sit with voters? a new fox news poll shows a majority would rather see congress move on reform. 65% of those polled would pick immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship over no congressional action at all. that is if those were the only two options. critics call a massive change in policy by the president alone unfair and they call it amnesty. and some political experts say ahead of a midterm election,
