time for sunday house call. >> welcome and joining us is the chairman of professor of urology. >> and the author of "unlocking the code of sickness and health." >> we want to talk about earthquake preparedness, it's something that really all of us should know about. what are some of the tips you can share with us.
9:31 am
>> this is one of the strongest earthquakes since 1989. at that time when it was 6.9. they had about 60 people who died. fortunately today we haven't had any deaths yet. over 70 admissions to the hospital so far, so a lot of them have been bruises and lacerations and cuts and things like that. there's a case of hip fracture that they're fixing and a case of heart attacks. so what i want people to know is that a lot of times what happens in a crisis like this, we all get calls from the hospital immediately. all the beepers and phones go off. we all move over there, they have a triage tent outside the hospital where a lot of these simple lacerations, simple fractures go over there and we can divide which ones are serious. now if someone comes in with internal bleeding, someone comes in with complex hip fractures or other heart attacks, those go to the operating room immediately and we have enough staff. so all the hospitals in that
9:32 am
area, within a few miles of that area are all on an emergency crisis basis and they're more than capable of handling this. >> they seem incredibly lucky, because in 1989 the earthquake killed 63 people. >> i want to give you an eye view into the queen of the valley hospital which is the number one hospital in the area. they currently how 89 people in the er. the majority were treated for cuts and bruises and lacerations. two very serious injuries, one was pediatric, all three cases were air lifted to the university of california at davis. they are a level three trauma center, the valley hospital, uc davis is a legal one trauma. so if it's more life threatening looking like emergency surgery,
9:33 am
or neurosurgery, they would then air lift the patient. >> there are obviously plans in place to deal with this. >> they will be asking for a lot of units of blood, in case there's any kind of bleeding going on if you have to go to the operating room. one of the best things about this earthquake was that it was 3 3:20 a.m. there's about a 50% chance within the next few hours or few days, there's going to be aftershocks of 5 magnitude or higher. so make sure you listen to what police have to say, there's also risk of gas leak, there's going to be some fire there they have to see, as you can see on these images. there's also contamination of the water that you have to be careful. make sure you use bottledled water. >> and the american red cross
9:34 am
has a couple of recommendatiore, if you are in bed, drop cover and hold on. it's an inclination to run out into the middle of the street, when something like this happens the american red cross recommends staying put until the shaking stops. >> get something that can cover your spine and your head and neck. if you injure your head and neck or your spine, that's when you can become paralyzed or have a lethal injury. >> it is so surprising, so shocking as a new yorker, coming to california, you don't know what's going on. go under a door frame, you're disoriented, you don't know what's going on. it's kind of a frightening, disorienting experience. >> actually there's also the risk of stress occurring here. stress, anxiety,
9:35 am
because they're worried. imagine that, you're sitting there in the middle of the night sleeping and the next thing you know the whole house is shaking. there's post-traumatic stress from this. >> how do you reduce that? >> at this point, this is happening so fast, so quick, that right now nobody's worried about post-traumatic stress, this is like in the coming days is when you will come back to your home and you see the whole house is collapsed, that's when depression or anxiety will kick in. right now this earthquake, you know, we haven't been there, we have like ten months of winter in new york city, those guys are used to this kind of earthquake. but it's so fast, you're talking
9:36 am
about 20 seconds of jolt and shaking the whole building. all you can do is get under a very secure frame or go under a desk or something that's strong enough that in case something collapses you won't hurt your head and neck. >> the house is rocking, what's going on. >> don't go outside. >> the key is tree jaj yaj, in terms of this hospital center, if the hospital gets clogged with all of the bruises and cuts and everything. anyone on the scene cha has injured a head or a neck or something like that, they get immobilized. you take them to the hospital, they've got to get air lifted. as is happening here t cuts and bruises you try to get them out of the way, send them home. a lot of stress and a lot of anxiety is the biggest problem. and fires, by the way you showed fires before, a lot of smoke inhalation you see, and
9:37 am
sometimes burns. >> and those tips can work not just ifz you're work in a tornado zone. >> it's and different kind of tragedy, this is all about like bruises, if something for example hits you on your head and you have a headache and you're dizzy. you want to make sure that you don't ignore this. the first day you might be okay, but make sure that you get it checked out. most emergency rooms are prepared, they have enough staff and they're going to take care of them. most of the injuries they're able to manage it. >> there's going to be a press conference at the hospital at 3:00 p.m. eastern time, 12:00 noon pacific time. >> and by the way, this is when you know the real american soul, when you see everyone come together and work together to save the town. i hope the price of the wine doesn't go up, that's the only thing i'm concerned about. >> a lot of damage there. >> and the nation's thoughts and prayers are focused there.

if it comes in a can. >> i don't think this is ekwif call. i think this is a definitely statement and i like it because the epa has said in the past, and we're talking mercury which is in tuna. they said in the past, you can have up to 12 ounces a week if you're pregnant. four micrograms of mercury is found in a -- and 170 micrograms is found in a portion of sword fish. so in other words, salmon is a heck of a lot safer than tuna. and considering the fact that infants, when they're born, there are studies that have shown that if you're exposed to a lot of mercury when you're in the womb, you can end up with developmental issues, you're going to ask me, eric, how much? we don't know how much, but it seems to be pretty prudent in my opinion to just stay away from
9:43 am
canned tuna when you're pregnant. but you can have salmon and you can have taliapia and you can have card fish. when you're deep in the ocean, the big fish are eating the smaller fish, which are eating the plants that are loaded with mercury, so the bigger up the food chain you go, the more mercury, you see. >> it's not just women who are pregnant, it's women who are trying to get pregnant, and for breast feeding women as well? >> all of those seem to be risky business at this point. this comes from a report from the epa and the fda. when you take about 12 ounces a week of tuna, you're fine, it doesn't really hurt you. consumer reports say stay away from tuna. about 20% or 1 out of 5 had too much mushercury in it. how does mercury get into our fish. power plants and -- mercury
9:44 am
becomes methyl mercury that can get absorbed into our fish, small fish, such as taliapiaor salmon, but the big fish, more like tuna, especially albacore tuna is the problem. where does the mercury go after you take the fish, it tends to go to your blood and you're 100% right, it goes through the umbilical cord and mercury is a tox toxin, it causes brain damage. so my advice to a lot of pregnant women, breast feeding stay away from tune in for those nine months, you're getting enough prenatal vitamins to carry you. >> could it be beyond tuna, for every day, i go to the u.n. and i'm eating the same thing every day for a year.
9:45 am
the vietnamese summer levels. then i get a call from the health department saying that my mercury levels were high. >> it may be that your mercury levels were up but shell fish is safer than tuna is. to laura's point, women trying to get pregnant, women that are pregnant and babies once they're born, but having scared everyone out there, if you just had a tuna sandwich and you're pregnant, you're okay. >> shell fish and other types of fish? >> those seem to be much better because they sit at the bottom of the ocean, and they're not absorbing as much mercury. when you go to your doctor, a lot of times the level is .5 milligrams of mercury. so you can actually check your blood test and your doctor can tell you how much mercury you had. i wonder how they got your mercury levels. >> i think a blood test. >> it may not have been to the shell fish.
