urbo. avo: get a $1,000 turbocharged reward card on new 2014 turbo models or lease a 2014 passat s for $189 a month after a $1,000 bonus. on this very busy news sunday, we are now in expanded two-hour of fox. let 'begin in northern california. we're waiting for this news conference to happen with city officials. where they had the 6.0 earthquake. earlier today a lot of damage. the scene imwine country is under a state of emergency. we'll bring it to you live. meanwhile, the quake hit at 3:20 a.m. local time. thank goodness it wasn't later in the day when people are walking around, but still destructive force hit that part of the country. dazed people ran from their
5:01 pm
homes from their sleep. they woke up, got out as fast as they could. we're told at least 120 people have gone to hospitals. fires broke out immediately, and it was tough fighting them, because some of the water lines had broken, and now the worry as we go into the late hours is with the rolling aftershocks they could see more more. the stronger quake to hit the bay area in a quarter century. >> relative calm in the community because of -- i think a lot of that had to deal with the overwhelming response that we had from our 911 staff, our police officers and our firefighters who live here in town who came in without having to be called in. working on security on the downtown area, some of the shopping centers. we will have for several days a
5:02 pm
high police presence, and that's to provide service to -- and assistance to the citizens of town as well as the business owners. >> so here's the latest from utility officials. they're still trying to assess the damage. they've had in actual success. there's still thousands of people without electricity, but they've been able to restore many of them. homes and businesses, some of them uninhabitable. adam housely joins us. that's his home area, he knows it well. he's been able to all day long give us pictures that no one else had. what's happening right snow. the latest number is more than 200 people have gone to hospital for injuries. we're told only three are told to be very serious.
5:03 pm
others are serious enough for treatment, but not to put anybody in critical condition. this is a retirement mobile home park, a nice mobile home park this morning that erupted in flames. there was no water. the water main busted, some of the gas lines bursted as well. they had to bring in a fire crew with a water tender to even fight some of the flames. destroyed four homes here, damaged six others. part of that press conference, we expect an estimate of how many businesses and homes have been red-tagged. some of the older buildings downtown that may look okay, you see walls that look bowed, a couple business owners i spoke with said they can't even get in their coffee shop, because the building next door might collapse according to authorities. a lot of money has been lost all the dishes are down, all the
5:04 pm
mementoes have come off the wall. >> you know what? you just doubled almost or number of injured people. i want to go back to the human element, because that was brand-new information you got as you were walking up to the microphone. >> right. >> why the jump? >> i think authorities were so focused that they got into places that they were still -- we've offered so many of these situations that those numbers are always fluid, but good point. we went to more than 200 went to

local hospitals. >> adam, i've got to cut in. let's go. then we'll be happy to answer any questions that you might have when we are done. why don't i bring up rick. rick is our community development director. for those of you talking about the status that have been damaged, we've handed out a list with addresses, and the names of the building with specific information. >> thanks, mike. >> as mike mentioned, there are -- there's a list that
5:06 pm
contains the addresses of the red tags that the city has issued to date. there are approximately 33 red tags. because of partial collapse, or separation of the roof as an example. they're split between commercial and residential. we've issued quite a number of -- we don't have the number of yellow tags. these are areas that they can only go into to, that once the property are cleared you of the materials, they are safe to occupy. the rest of the buildings that aren't yellow or red tagged, there can be a presumption that those are accessible. we asked the people to be smart about it.
5:07 pm
they should contact us. we put up a number of contact city of napa.org, so there's information that you can get up to date. tomorrow, just really quickly, we will be convening a group of between 20 and 30 building inspectors and engineers working with city teams to go out and inspect the remaining areas in the city we have not seen in a great level of detail. we hope by tomorrow we will have done an entire canvass. the summaries of the building-related issues. it's hard to know. we started in the center and worked outward. in? areas we've got to the edge and others we haven't. just to hazard a broad guess, i would say that we've done about 35% of the city's jurisdictional boundaries. >> reporter: would you characterize the types of damage
5:08 pm
you are seeing, especially in the buildings that are red tagged? >> the list that we provided for you, and i have copies here will show that in the right-hand columns. the range goes from materials that are falling off, where the ribbons are back to the parking area. we suggest people stay back. if we do have another trembler that material can fall off. others are full collapse where you've seen for example a carport that literally dropped to the vehicles below it. staircases that have separated from the building so you can't get into the building. we've had some structural fires as well. so it really -- the range is pretty broad. >> reporter: did the date of the buildings' construction factor? >> really that hasn't been the case. we've seen buildings that were constructed more recently, as an example the hotel downtown that was built in 2006, had materials
5:09 pm
fall from it, from the facade. and then, of course there are older buildings that have fallen off their foundation, which are several decades old. >> reporter: what about in terms of the retrofit, how does that play out? any retrofitted buildings that fareed better or not necessarily? >> the urms, as we call them, we have had i think there were 18 unreinforced main street buildings over the last 7 or 10 years that we've identified. 12 of those have been reinforced, six haven't, but we are working proactively with the property owners of three of those, and three of them we weren't. those are the ones on brown street where you saw pretty substantial damage. as i mentioned before, some of the buildings that were retrofitted didn't fare as well as you might expect. >> what about the location with sort of a.
5:10 pm
>> the location of where the buildings have had problems have varied. they've been downtown, they've got out to the edge of town. away from the buildings into the roofs of the billing. that said, the more visual damage on the larger buildings downtown. are some of -- it's far too early to tell whether or not these buildings are going to be salvaged off not. so we can see, get it properly tagged, make certain people can get into the buildings as ned, and stay away as necessary. but it isn't until we get
5:11 pm
engineers after kind of we've settled here a bit before we can determine the reasoning some of these buildings have had problems and what to do with them from there. >> reporter: the plan for tomorrow right here in napa, or bringing in people from elsewhere? >> it's a combination of both. oes is providing us with inspectors, between 10 and 20, and we have our internal crews as well. and others who will help guide. >> has been there been anything done since that earthquake for private owners to reinforce. >> it's a broad question. those improvements of a
5:12 pm
comprehensive program of all the chimneys and towns. i can't say that has or hasn't been done. >> can you speak to the old courthouse? >> the courts house, which is a county building, the courthouse has two sides to it that have damage. the west side has been yellow tagged. that means folks can get in there to do cleanup. the intent is to get in quickly and get out quickly. so it's an interesting building for a block that really has two different circumstances. we have been watching, as you can see, the city of napa that was so hard hit by that earthquake, that 6.0 today the epicenter about six miles away and about 6 to 7 miles deep in the earth, so rather shallow, which is why you say so many

damage. and people felt it so far away. adam, you are there at the scene in downtown napa. a couple things stood out to me. one had to do with moum inspectors are coming in, and how they're seeing more damage than expected in terms of the retrofitted buildings. >> yeah, two important points in that press conference so far. first of all, some of the buildings that weren't yet retrofitted, they came down and crumbled, and some that had been -- everything had been changed around, they came down as well, just as bad. of course, that would be determined why. the other thing is despite those pictures of the buildings that came down in downtown napa, as you drive through the town, there's a lot of smaller damage. you'll see a home maybe built in the '50s or '60s and the foundation is tweaked. eek mobile hams that weren't damaged by fire, some of them
5:14 pm
are red-tagged. we're talking about millions and millions of dollars in damage. that iconic block-long courthouse that the city manager was just speaking of, too, one end of it is red tagged, the other end is yellow tagged, they're trying to clean it up, but looking out carefully. adam, we'll come back as the news warrants. thank you very much. we'll be right back in about six seconds. get ready to crack, dunk, dip... it's crabfest at red lobster! the year's largest variety of crab! like new! crab lover's trio! or try new! jumbo lump crab over wood-grilled salmon. crabfest is now... but ends soon! so hurry in and sea food differently! i take prilosec otc each morning for my frequent heartburn. because it gives me zero heartburn...
