>> hill would he and well dom to a special two-hour head i gos of "justice." northern california rocked by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake. governor brown declaring an emergency for the wine country. >> we have new numbers that have come in the last hour. there's a press conference in downtown napa 6 miles or so from where we are located. latest numbers 200 people went to the hospital from injuries as a result of the earthquake. there are a lot of buildings you don't see the damage. there's a lot of buildings you do see the damage. behind me you can see a mobile
6:01 pm
home park a nicer mobile home park mostly a retirement community. most of this is destroyed. a local reporter is in the shot you will see some damage back behind her. there are six other buildings also damaged. ten all told had some sort of damage or are completely destroyed. you see downtown napa some of the buildings crumbled from the earthquake. you see a lot of smaller damage when you drive by a house built on the corner you will see the foundation tweak. they haven't had a chance to see those locations. which are talking about potentially hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. the good news only 3 serious injuries. if it had been 4 or 5 hours later i was walking with my wife sunday getting coffee normally there would be people sitting in chairs and tables. thankfully at 3:30 in the morning you don't have that happen. a lot of injuries and damage in
6:02 pm
the area. very shaken up the largest quake in this area in 25 years. >> adam, my family, we lost our home in a flood, but it really didn't look that bad until some of the contractors came through and they said, you know what, the foundation is no good. you can't go in the house. i image there are a lot of homes there people don't even know how dangerous it is and might risk going back. >> yeah, that's part of the problem. in fact even mobile home parks, it's a nice mobile home park. retired community. i have seen several red tagged. there are several all twisted. the downtown part of the problem earlier today some of the video we were showing on fox there are buildings that are collapsed or partially collapsed. the ones next door there's a coffee shop you can't go inside a coffee shop they are could fall down on top of kids. almost every restaurant lost a lot of dishes and food a lot of
6:03 pm
things came off the shelf. there is no power in some places. food spoils. this is the height of tourism here. more than 200 went to the hospital. a lot of these business owners almost all of them don't have earthquake insurance. 35,000 a year in some places. >> we will return with you later. thank you. fox meteorologist janice dean has information on the quake itself and possible after shocks. >> i study meteorology, judd, so a lot of times when you have a hurricane or tornado there's a lot of lead up time and warning. with earthquakes we don't have this. people literally had seconds before this earthquake hit in the middle of the night. but there's the what we have right now magnitude 6.0 as adam and yourself mentioned around 3:20 a.m. last evening and there's the location southwest of the napa area.
6:04 pm
we are concerned about after shocks. 54 percent chance of a large aftershock. that is 5.0 or higher in the next couple days. that could potentially cause more damage. they are still vulnerable in those areas. we could see 30-70 small after shocks. i have heard in the area 20 to 30 already reported after shocks in some cases above 3.0 and there's three different categories of after shocks. there's a fore shock before hand there's the main shock the 6.0 and the aftershock that we are going to experience really within the next couple days the next week even the next month or so. when we talk about magnitude we had a strong -- this is a strong classification of earthquake 6 could 6.9. the one 25 years ago was 6.9. that is 30 times greater than the one we felt today. major 7 to 7.9 and great would be 8 or greater than that the sumatra earthquake of 2004 off
6:05 pm
the coast of sumatra was 9.1 a devastating earthquake. how often do we see earthquakes across the world around 134 per year. 7 to 7.9, 15. it is rare to see higher than an 8. here are the earthquakes. we are not even in the top 10 from what we saw in napa. california no stranger to earthquakes. the great earthquake of san francisco in 1906 was 7.8 magnitude. thousands of people died. hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. judge, back to you. >> janice. one question about the fact that there may be these after shocks that could be extremely serious, a lot of people have to, you know, judge whether or not they should go back to their homes. are there a lot of people without a place to go? how many people is this affecting? do we know? >> i think we are dealing with hundreds of thousands of people that could be affected and of course the numbers are coming in from the injuries.
6:06 pm
as adam reported i am thankful that it did happen and people weren't walking around. as you mentioned people have to go out and assess the damage. what i am afraid of is people going out and not taking this seriously enough. i saw on twitter earlier on people skate boarding over the damage in the roadways. you have got that buckle and people are skate boarding over it. stuff like that, people need to be cautious. we are still going to be dealing with the after shocks in the next couple days. there is a possibility of more earthquakes in this area. >> janice dean, thanks so much. with me the public information officer from the city of napa, barry martin. what are you hearing about the number of injuries, earlier it was 93 now we are talking 200. what are you hearing? >> i don't have a confirmed number of 200. the confirmed number i have is 125 treated at queen of the
6:07 pm
valley hospital and 8 at saint lena hospital. that's all i can confirm. >> we heard from janice dean talking about the possibility of after shocks. are you prepared there to house the people that are affected and might be even more affected if there are after shocks? ? >> we have one shelter that is kurr lint open and we have the capacity to open more. napa has a history of flooding of earthquakes. over many decades we dealt with floods and had to house people who were displaced. we have a variety of shelter locations predetermined. we could open more if we need to. i think what we are finding with this particular incident is most people are finding an alternate place to go with friends or family. we are not seeing a huge influx to a shelter. >> you talk about familiar with flooding but not this, is this the first earthquake you can
6:08 pm
remember in this area? >> actually not. we had one in the year 2000. it was september of that year. it was also along what it appears to be the same fault the west napa fault in that vicinity. it was the epicenter of that quake was more in the city of napa directly. >> barry martin, thanks so much for being with us. >> you are welcome. >> with me now the director of the size taw logical laboratory from berkeley. your reaction to the quake that hit california today? >> this is a reminder for us we have to be ready for big earthquakes. as pointed out it was not a big earthquake it is 30 percent less earthquake from the other information released back in 1989. it is a wake-up call. it caused significant damage in
6:09 pm
napa but we have to be ready for bigger earthquakes than this one. >> waudz there anyway to predict this? >> no, we cannot predict earthquakes. however what we can now do is provide a warning prior to c earthquakes the warning of 10's of seconds. in california about a minute worth of warning. the demonstration early warning system we have been running statewide across california they did issue an alert. at the lab which is a little ways south of napa we had 10 seconds worth of warning. >> i understand, richard you were a part of the team that developed the actual 10 seconds warning system. how effective is it? 10 seconds? >> so this is something we have been working for for a number of years. it is a statewide effort in fact a west coast he have court to build a public earthquake early warning system. what you can do is individuals can take cover in a safe zone so
6:10 pm
we heard about the 200 injuries. many of those are goino.ñ,ó.f?* from fallen debris, mason ry, things like that. a few seconds of warning means you can get out of the way and reduce the new jersey of injurie -- numb of injur/* numb injuries.r they automatically stop their trainsl? whenever there's a earthquake. eye surgeons can separate away frtj,1÷óñ elevators can open their doors. we need to move forward taking advantage of the new technologies we have. we need the funding to implemen% this public warning system on the west coast. >> how concerned are you that there could be an even bigger earthquake ttsq,'he)ñcoming? >> we know that09 there is a á#rh$óskcrae(pfy:aámw3
6:11 pm
advantages of new technologies as they become available. >> interesting the aftershock earthquake would be greater than the original. >> that is always a possibility. what happens is when you have a rupture you change it on the assault. it is possible it causes a larger magnitude earthquake. >> coming up more of our continuing coverage in the largest earthquake to hit the bay area in 25 years.

there are bricks down on the sidewalk. this is a sidewalk that would be packed with tourists on a normal sunday. you can see it has been shut down. the awning is completely destroyed. let me show you why. as you go off this is a three story building. this earthquake ended up shaking the brick walls and they ended
6:16 pm
up falling down on to the sidewalks. authorities pushed everybody back 20 or 30 feet because they are worried it could come crashing down. as we have gone through napa we have seen a number of buildings, homes, businesses that have sustained serious damage to the point that they have hundreds of dollars of loss -- hundreds of thousands of]z losses and peopl are telling me they don't have earthquake]b insurance and deductibles are incredibly high. they are going to have to pay those out of pocket hundreds of thousands of dollars. while they are trying to pick it up they are thinking about that and it will be a very long process. >> will, even beyond the people who are immediately affected, i understand that tens of thousands are without power. is that still the case? >> well, at its peak 70,000 people through out the area have lost power.
6:17 pm
they have been doing a good job. the latest number as we have been told is 600 people in the area don't have power. there are a number of shelters open for people. there is one shelter that i believe is open. we are told they can go there. a lot of people have friends and family in the area so they are going in with them while they continue to see how much damage there is. a lot of people don't know how to get into their homes and businesses. they are not sure how that will play out in the coming days. >> especially with the possibility of after shocks, and as i look at part of the roof it seems angled down. i am not only worried about you, but they say the after shocks might even be greater than the original earthquake. take care of yourself. will, thank you for being with us. go ahead, will, finish. >> well i was going to say we have already had 50 after shocks, and there are supposed to be even more in the next
